Fun!
I'm kinda torn because I prefer the 2D aesthetic of the base game, but the 3D version (Vestigial Princess) has a better combat and more polished gameplay (finally, a horror game with actual puzzles!). The death scenes are really creative and detailed and would put the modern Mortal Kombat to shame.
Another thing I really liked was how memorable Amber is. It's refreshing to see a female horror protagonist who is fun and charismatic. I hope she'll keep her personality for the remake.
I HIGHLY recommend you play House of Velez before buying this. It's essentially the same product yet far superior.
A nice little 1.5hr~ old-school horror experience, some janky combat and puzzles, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
Even after reading the other reviews, I wanted to give this game a try. But oh boy is it not worthy.
To start off with the good things:
-I love the setting. It feels very Silent Hilly but more mature themed.
-Death scenes. It's very gory and I'm all for it.
-Voice acting for the main character is pretty good (from the little I managed to catch) and the lip sync is impressive, better than an AAA-game.
The bad and only reason I can't recommend the game:
-The combat, it's inconsistant and very unsatisfying. The first enemy you come across is borderline cheating by teleporting behind you mid-hits. It causes frustration because you can't learn the fight with how random it is.
I also tried the Vestigial Princess DLC.
I was ready to recommend the DLC because it felt way better, but after reaching the first obstacle it quickly changed to Not Recommended due to frustration and how inconsistant that part was handled.
I've had less frustration in Souls-like games.
Unless you're a masochist, don't bother with this one.
I'm really sorry to give this a negative since I'm a big fan of the dev and I just started the game (about 30 minutes at the time of this review) but the balance in this game is out of control.
House of Velez was extremly harsh but if you died it was really your fault because you either f*cked up a puzzle or you didn't hide well from a monster because you got the timing wrong.
Grave Prosperity - part 1 is the representation of the *teleport behind you* ''nothing personnel kid'' meme.
The monster will teleport without cooldown behind you and attack before you even have time to react anytime it want, that's really bul*sh*t.
Health kits heal you only 50% of your health and you die in 4 hits on normal difficulty but the game will throw teleporting bullet sponges at you non stop.
Apart from that the controls are pretty nice and the animations are still pieces of art but I can't reccomend it just because of the teleportation mechanic.
The balance completely ruin the game.
I will change back to postitive once I play the remade version and see how good it is.
this game is interesting, but it is missing 2 very important things, be a longer game and have more nudity please add more nudes
Game can be a tad frustrating at first. But sooo worth the play!! Can't wait for the full game!!
If you like gory cutscenes, then this game is definetely worth attention. The combat system is difficult, but only for the first five minutes. Once you get the rhythm - it's okay.
If this game was created by just one dev - then I think it's a good one in the genre.
Over the top violence, and a persistent back story throughout all the author's games.
I really, really hate to down vote Grave Prosperity; it feels like I'm playing some sort of long lost, side scrolling, low budget PS1 horror game, which makes me stupid happy like the nerd that I am, but to echo the sentiments of other reviewers: the combat is impossible. Im-fucking-possible. Amber controls quite fine—that isn't the real issue—but the lack of enemy tells and invuln frames makes fending off any monster an effort in futility, and considering you're forced to fight (as opposed to say, Silent Hill, where avoiding combat is the key to survival) in most situations that I encountered, there's a high probability you'll cycle through what seems like every possible death animation within a 30 minute time span.
That said, I *am* super excited to see the UE4 update and possible improvements with a complete game rebuild. Something to keep an eye on at the very least?
Rating: ★★½
I wanted to like this game but playing it on the Normal difficulty, the game is punishing for the wrong reasons. The very first enemy is so badly made it's laughable. Your character's combat is responsive to a degree, everything does indeed work from her combo to countering, However the very first enemy has these options:
- Teleporting while being combo'd by you
- Teleporting while it's attacking you
- Teleporting after being parried, thus showing your counterattack doesn't even have iframes because it can smack you out of it
If the first enemy of the game has this bs, I can only imagine what the rest of the game has. I don't mind difficulty, but this isn't making the game difficult because you don't feel as though you lost through fault of your own, it's like fighting a Guilty Gear character using a vanilla Street Fighter II character, it's not enjoyable and I'm guessing there's some sort of way to exploit the enemy AI in order to beat it "easily" but that's not enjoyable either. I can't recommend this game until the developer looks into this issue. Age of Barbarian has more polish than this.
I like the oldschool style of this game, though not everyone will appreciate this. Worth the price.
Pros:
-Old school horror atmosphere
-Pretty good voice acting
-Excellent death scenes
-Leaves you wanting more
Cons:
-The controls feel super clunky. I had to play on "easy" just because I was having such a hard time with them. No rebinding of keys or buttons. Highly recommend a controller except where you need to mash a button; I needed to mash both the keyboard and controller to make any progress.
Closing thoughts:
Still enjoying this style of game that the developer puts out. It's a short experience but adequately priced and scratches that itch for old school survival horror. I'd love to see a full sized title from this dev at some point.

Have you ever tried fighting your little sister only using your big toe? Thats basicly how i feel when i play this game. The interface is the second worst i have encounterd only surpassed by Crimson Defence, thats an achivment in it self. Lets start with the Cons....
Cons: Menu consist of: New game, continue game and quit.... Changing volume of the sound, effects and keyboard layout is merely Sci-Fi, after all this is a remake of a game from 2012, you know... right before the dinosaurs died out.
I never played the original game, so i am unsure what is remade... it cant be the grapichs cause that is still kinda 1996 ish, the interface is pre-ww2 so it cant be that.... i mean.. caps lock to run????? what the hell, i would proberly have better luck defeating the enemies by banging my head on the keyboard. For a remade game witch the 2nd worst interface i have encountered, simple graphics and so forth it seems more like a retry to squeez some aditional cash out of outdated game or a simple re-launch. And for $4.99... haha it´s not worth more than a dollar.
If i dident know any better i would have tought this game was made in China: Tis is key yu use, deal wi it, no LEEFUND!
For me this game is a COMPLETE waste due to the interface basicly, enoyed me enough to quit playing after an hour.
Pros: Seems to be a 100 ways to die if you are a crappy gamer like me...
First of all, I think a lot of things were done right w/ this game.
As a horror fanatic, there are some great gore scenes. The game plays out ( to me ) like a side scrolling beat em up w/ exploration and adventure elements and it works.
My only beef is that even on easy mode, you die pretty quick. I would recommend better game balance...
This looks like a game I played on the BBC Micro computer in about 1985!
Ridiculous sliding sprites and crappy backgrounds - boring gameplay with a cliche-ridden 'girly' character.
Zero out of any number you like!
