Some neat ideas, but it's hard to recommend. Between the early-game slog and the too-close copying of others in the genre, I'm not having a good time. Some of the writing is inspired, but it's buried under a lot of other stuff that's less-than-stellar.
yea
the game can be buggy at times, but im okay with that to an extent
This game is beyond buggy. Don't recommend in its current state, the performance is abysmal. It's a shame because it's very nostalgic, and the mechanics are there.
Great monster battler with a cool/intricate breeding system
Janky, poor performance, bugs.
So much potential squandered.
Feels super janky, def not a fan.
Really delightful monster collector game. Very neat customizing features - palettes and stats as well as the whole sprite are changed with breeding, resulting in a whole bunch of fun combos and room for min-maxing or simply looking for cool critters.
Some of my favorite mon designs in any game tbh!
Has had a few buggy rough patches, but is in a good spot now. Haven't had any problems for a long time.
haha wtf is this? I like pixel art, I like monster taming games... but this just seems
REALLY bad...
The game has been through many rough patches (heh), but the state of the game now is pretty excellent. I've had more fun in a recent run than I have in a lot of other games for a bit. Great work!
Monster crown is a very charming monster tamer. Tons of potential and a very cool monster breeding system that allows each of your creatures to have a personal touch, thanks to colour palettes being passed on. This level of variety to each of the same species is something I wished more games were capable of doing, but I'm more than happy that this one does.
I played during the time quite a few bugs were present but I haven't encountered those since the patch.
Enjoyed this game a lot! Like a darker, more mature pokemon. Story line is fantastic and original, and the battles are fun. A bit buggy when I played it earlier this year, though hopefully that's been fixed with the latest update. Looking forward to the sequel.
Very Buggy but fun, im not done with the game yet and have mostly been breeding to get as many cool looking mons as possible, that said at the end of the 2nd page after 4 hours of breeding/fusing mons its starts to act wonky for me, colors shifting and eggs not the right colors, but on the plus side i got a rainbow led mon so im happy.
A buggy, yet enjoyable game.
If you enjoy monster tamers, are willing to discover the system in the game yourself (instead of being outright told how everything works and how you should use it) and arent put off by (semi minor, yet common) bugs then this is a hidden gem.
(I played the game on the 1.2.5 version)
The roster of monsters is amazing design wise. ~200 monsters each with 6 (visual) forms
Furthermore you can combine each monster with the colour palette from another monster via breeding, allowing for a ton of customisation.
Combat is a mixed bag. Its good once you understand the system and get to use/combine the unique and fun moves, however it requires you to use the breeding system
Breeding is great. Its incredibly fast and simple, making it a core part of the game. However its very poorly documented and the UI is lacking, making it confusing at the start. It is also balanced in a way where you can use it late into the game, without your newly hatched monsters then being underpowered. Once you understand it its great (notice a theme?) and becomes a core and enjoyable part of the gameplay.
Overworld is meh. Its good in the way the overworld in modern p-mon games are good, yet boring in a very similar fashion. Not too much going on there. The game does have some side quests and lots of semi hidden areas with unique monsters, however its largely unexciting.
Story is underwhelming. Sorta just there during normal gameplay. If youre super interested theres a ton of lore in the game, but its just very bare-bones and feels badly paced when it comes to an average playthrough.
Now the bugs....
Good news is that I havent encountered any gamebreaking bugs
Bad news is that theres a lot of them still. Unresponsive UIs/npcs are the most common issue, accidental story skips (it doesnt break anything, but it will mention a part of the plot you havent done yet) happen and sadly the battle system struggles when swapping monsters in (making either you or your opponent lose a turn)
As said nothing gamebreaking, but I can see how this lack of polish might annoy some people.
Another big issue I mentioned above is the lack of documentation. The game has a ton of fun things going on, but explains them very poorly (or not at all). The wiki does exist, however its not in a good state atm with a lot of information being from before the "dlc" (just part of the steam version!) came out. Joining the discord is a good shout if you need help, since the community on there is still very active.
Overall I really enjoyed the game and hope other people can get past the slow start too, because it gets very good once you start understanding the game and its systems.
I don't want to compare 2 completely different beasts here, but despite the amount of polish that Temtem has, I've greatly enjoyed Monster Crown 10x more. It has its problems, with a little bit of bugs, but I can't help but notice that a lot of heart and soul has been added into this game despite the problems this game is facing. The dev is crazy for even attempting to make his own Monster Crown TCG. I will be buying the sequel when it releases. Please give this game a chance. 10/10.
Bought it a while ago, hated it. Refunded, do not bother
i wish i could leave a positive review, i really like the game-play but after several new game files and every one of them ending in a different save corrupting bug i just cant recommend someone spend money on it, i hope the devs focus on fixing the issues present and i can update this review someday
There are only a few negative reviews that have as many hours in this game as I do.
Trust me when I say this:
This game is a buggy, unfinished mess. Good ideas with awful implementation creating an even worse Pokeclone with shades of Monster Rancher but EDGY. It's also been completely abandoned by the devs, so don't expect it to be fixed any time soon. I've played better Early Access titles.
Buggy
The game itself is fine, sure there's few bugs in there but it's still playable somewhat. The monster design is cool and it is the only positive thing from this game. Story is meh, and little unclear, battle is straightforward from many monster taming genre. Not sure if I recommend this game but I round up.
Apo my beloved
I want to like this game. It has many things that I like. I'm a long time fan of the monster tamer genre. I have enjoyed Pokemon, Azure Dreams, Telefang, Robopon, Siralim, Dragon Quest Monsters, and others.
I enjoy the look and feel of the game. I really like the monster designs, the music, and many other aspects. I've been follow it since before it was playable, and I was really excited to combine monsters and have a really unique team.
The main problem is the bugs and glitches. I've been unable to even SEE me team for a long time in the status screen. entering and exiting buildings sometimes repositions the viewpoint. The balancing seems off. ( i call this a bug only because sometimes bosses one shot or two shot me, then other times it seems like they don't) and then the game crashes too.
Another thing that frustrates me is that it feels like the devs are moving on from this game. I'm thankful for the free updates and the free DLC, but with a sequel on the horizon, it's odd that this game is still like this. I like the parts I like, but I can't recommended it tbh because the bugs make it not fun.
At first I did not mind the bugs and technical issues that much. Then they became more frequent and I decided to look into this game more. This game released in its 1.0 state and has also gotten its "last DLC" since last february. What surprises me is the state this game is in and the developers consider it "finished". They even announced they are working on Monster Crown 2.
I do not want to come off as rude, but maybe finish up this game before working on a sequel?
Here I will list some bugs and issues that are still present:
- Move learning UI popping up randomly at moments it should not, like battles and talking to NPC's
- Sometimes when talking to a person that wants to trade, they accept a monster trade even though you do not even have the monster. You can seriously just select a monster that is not the one they want.
- Many graphical UI issues like text not properly aligning with text boxes, UI elements staying up if you press A too fast, or menus popping up that should not be there.
- The monster that follows you does not care about the rules of the terrain and just appears over bridges, arcs and various other structures that are "above" the player character.
These are just the few I could remember off the top of my head. The game is awfully janky and still feels like it's in early access, despite the developers saying it is finished.
