Great to see classic iPhone games coming to steam. Works great, but would love to see Steam Deck support.
Messy, Frustrating, and a port of a game from the freemium era of games. its cute and has a lot of potential but the execution on steam is abysmal. nowhere near worth its current price buy it on a big sale if you must.
Being a port of an older mobile game, it's not terribly hard, nor is it very in depth, however the art style, music, and controls all work pretty well, and when the game runs well, it can be a blast to play.
The dilemma, however, is that after some time, the game simply stopped running properly, and as of now, attempting to open them game simply results in a white screen, and nothing happens.
I have not been able to find a solution as of September 8, 2023, so until this is rectified, I don't think I can recommend getting this game on steam, if only because there's a good chance the game flat out won't work.
That being said, Squids Odyssey has been released on several other platforms, and as far as I am aware, none of them have the issue. So, if you do find yourself interested, you may be able to check out the game there.
It's a top down turn based strategy RPG adventure from the same people that made Furi (This game was their first game) where you fling squids to navigate levels fighting other sea creatures, avoiding obstacles, and trying to stay on the map. This is a phone port of a game that came out so long ago that it isn't updated to play on any current OS, so I was stoked to see it on Steam. Too many games keep disappearing without having a way to play them anymore, and it's sad when they're good games like this, so I'm glad they made a good port for it.
Pros
I've ran into 0 bugs
The graphics are remastered in HD so it looks polished (it came out in 2011 not in HD)
It's a bundle of both the games that released put together with additional content so a lot to play through
The controls are adapted from the touchscreen to Mouse/Controller and they both work well
The Game Bakers is a good company (They only have 3 games on here, but they have another game Called Combo Crew, and every game they've made is solid with a large amount of interaction with their community. Any developer that tries to help their customers and shows they exist by taking feedback, fixing issues, and actually listening to their fans is a start in the right direction even if their stuff isn't perfect)
It's broken down into small missions so it's easy to play a bit at a time when you don't have a ton of time to invest, and super easy to come back to if you haven't played in a while
Cons
The map feels a bit uncomfortable at times; not being able to look around can cause you to waste your time searching in the wrong directions and there's no compass telling you were your missions are located. It's fairly small maps though so it's not a massive issue
It's very simplistic so it starts to get repetitive after playing for a while. This is definitely something you would leave and come back to in order to finish
I know a lot of people would complain about there not being a line for you character's shots, but that's part of the challenge of the game. I wouldn't want a game like this to tell me if I was over/undershooting my shots. It would be like them telling you if you're making a shot in pool (Which a lot of games do now and it makes the game so boring. What's the point in playing if you can predict every play?) With this game series being as big as it was on the phone, I'm surprised that it's not popular on here too seeing as they did a good job with it.
So if you were someone looking to get this from nostalgia and were worried about the game being ported off or wrong; it feels just like it used to before even though it's not touchscreen controls.
If you're thinking it looks good to try out for the first time; it's definitely a phone port so if you're expecting something advanced or complex, this isn't that game, but it is a great causal gaming experience.
The game is fun with a shockingly large amount of maps in the campaign, but runs into glitches and optimization issues. Zooming the camera while the games switching characters or activating a special move immediately crashes to desktop sometimes. I also don't appreciate being unable to rebind controls. Still, it's a good game. Especially if you can play on something portable and/or with a touch screen.
Bullsh** game. you can't even tell how far your squids are going to travel so they are most likely to go too far, fall over the edge and die.
The damage is also random it seems. the enemy is more likely to do more damage than you do to them.
completely frustrating and a waste of time.
I LOVE this game. LOVE it! The story is great, the characters are well-written, the turn-based combat is accessible (if you just wanna fling stuff around and meet objectives) AND challenging (if you wanna get every objective met). And with all the different additions there is a TON of content here. The first chapter is the best, but the rest are good as well.
Be aware though!
1) This is a port of a mobile game that was intended with touch controls in mind. It does not have outstanding graphics and some weird mobile-to-PC transitions, but do not let that turn you away.
2) Play with a CONTROLLER!!! I can not stress that enough. The mouse and keyboard controls SUCK. They are too finicky and easy to screw up and will make the game unpleasant. If you have a touchscreen and it works with this game (I don't know if that's possible here) then this would probably be the best way to play.
3) Just enjoy the ride and don't take it too seriously. It's intended to be light and a little bit silly.
Game good but it's sad it's experience is altered by various glitches and bugs

There are quite a lot of levels, around 20 hours of gameplay i would say?, add another 15 for completing pro mode .
The squids are cute
There are quite a lot of squids (around 10)
The levels look great
Can be very dynamic, especially with scout class squids

Can crash for multiple reaons, here's a list (also some bugs)
-Clicking pause just before losing a game (like, your character fall and you want to restart to get 1 sec faster because of the losing screen)
-Scrolling for dezoom at a new turn WITHOUT FIRST MOVING THE CAMERA BY HOLDING THE CURSOR
-Can just crash for no reason sometimes but only happened 1 or 2 times in my 35 hours of gameplay
Being pixel close to an enemy and charging at him doesn't deal damage, only push him
The bestiary isn't really big (4 enemies, they just get reskins for advanced difficulties)
The sushi power-up is great but can be fucked up with high stamina squids, it's hard to manage the synetic enery without falling into a pit or doing very slow mouse movements
Overall I think it's worth buying the game when it's on reductions (around 5 euros) because of the various glitches and bugs, but it looks nice, the charachters are charming and it's a good experience, also a nostalgia hit for previous IOS users.
Perhaps the best mobile game. A shame it was pulled off Steam the first time around. This expanded edition includes all content that was previously released separately, which makes this an even better deal.
The game is still the best on my old tablet. Clumsy and ugly on steam though.
