MARS, IRL! (sort of)
When I was a kid, there was an unspoken assumption that when I grew up we would be living in space, working on the moon, and exploring Mars, etcetera etcetera..
Well, I grew up. Worked on some pretty cool feature film and game projects, but the space exploration part never quite took off.. So I figured it was time to create my own 'space program'.
Red Rover takes satellite and terrain data from NASA's HiRISE Mars orbiter and incorporates it into a driving simulator. I'm taking my decades of movie magic experience and putting it towards making something that lets me virtually experience the real planet Mars (subject to current technological and VR limitations, of course)
Red Rover started as a personal research project a few years ago - because I wanted to explore Mars. I'm now making this available on Steam so that like-minded explorers can get to explore Mars as well! No missions to do, no highscores to beat, just nine curated Mars datasets - roughly about 5km x 5km in size each - for you to explore. I hope to add more maps as time permits and new satellite data is released!
Red Rover supports Oculus Rift VR, but will also run in non-VR mode.

The only part of this game that's fun is bouncing planet balls around in the training area. The game does get honorable mention for making me VR-sick faster than anything else I've played. Re-release this, and let us roll the planet balls around on Mars, Rocket-League-style.
Broke game.
I bought this during the Steam Summer Sale. It's a truly great stress reliever. Better than benzodiazepines. Works fine with a monitor or my Oculus Rift S.
I like to roll out of bed in the morning, immediately plug in my Logitech F310, and go bounding across Mars, viciously abusing several million dollars worth of taxpayer-purchased NASA equipment.
I own just about every NASA and/or Mars-related title on Steam. This has excellent Mars maps. I just wish that Alan would eventually stitch them all together and create the entire planet for free roaming. No borders. The whole enchilada.
If you really want to drop your stress levels fast, like installing an NOS system on your big block Chevy, I recommend singing the theme song from, "The Patty Duke Show" at the top of your lungs while bounding about in your rover on Mars in Red Rover. It's cathartic.

Throw in an occasional, "Yee haw!" or "Oh, hell yeah!" and you'll save a fortune on therapy bills and prescription medications. It's better than zen meditation, yoga, any of that stuff.
Yes, better even than 2.0 mg of Lorazepam, and without the drowsiness. Ten minutes of that and you'll be completely over the morning existential crisis and ready to go on witnessing the human species losing their collective mind at breakneck speed. You won't even care anymore.
Red Rover is HIGHLY recommended. It will save your sanity, if you have any left to save. Buy it immediately, if not sooner.

Thoughts for additional or community content:
1. Add option to add/remove fictional content: e.g. remove crates.
2. More maps using HiRISE data.
3. Using the above, recreate Mark Watney's journey.
Would recommend, 10/10. Amazing graphics
A decent attempt at VR Mars, as a default not as good as Mars 2030. Then you add the horrific situation where the "recenter" button is completely ineffective. I had to play it with my head in between two bookshelves! Very poor development.
Mars 2030 is way better.
Like other reviewers say, keep your expectations low and you will be pleased. There really isn't much to do, besides driving around and sight-see. I was initially disappointed in the driving part as it doesn't feel very real at all. However, after seeing some of the terrain, I quickly realised that a more realistic driving experience will make you very sick in VR. You can also fly around, not very realistically, but it is easy and gets the job done.
The bottom line for me, is that for an extremely low price, you get to see Mars close-up. Not all of it, but enough to appreciate what the one-way trip volunteers will be seeing in 2024. That alone is worth the asking price. Driving/flying around awkwardly is just a bonus.

I had some issues navigating the main menu when the tutorial was over but found using WASD keys let me get past that and into the simulation. I didn't find that step very intuitive. Once in though, the simulation is excellent and I plan on spending much time racing around the surface of mars!
This experience is stunning if you like exploring space in VR and I love flying around the real terrain, feels like I am there on Mars. I have waited for something like this for decades! Nice one Dev this has become my new favourite diddn't think anything would beat Lunar Flight so well done. If I could ask for a small request, could we have an untethered from vehicle roaming around EVA function so we can explore freely and an adjustment so we can calibrate our seat position in the rover up/down left/right for the viewpoint. I love it!
Thumbs up, with some caveats. I've been reading Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars" trilogy recently, and I picked this up because I thought it might be good way to better visualize some of the landscapes described in the book. On that level, as a kind of visual aid to my imagination, it's pretty good. It's worth $5 -- the price of a fancy coffee drink -- to get an accurate idea of what Mars more-or-less looks like from ground level.
As a game, however, it's ... well ... it's not one. It's not really even trying to be one. The controls are wonky and less than intuitive. (I'd pay another $1 for a DLC that just mapped the camera to the right analog stick on my Xbox controller). There are objective markers, but they don't really mean anything. There's no story. There's no skill involved in navigating the rover around, which could have been an interesting way to go. (There's a whole team at NASA that just tries to figure this stuff out for the real rovers.) You can't free roam the planet, only explore specific map areas, which is less than ideal.
If you meet Red Rover on its own terms, and don't it expect it to be something it isn't, it's neat enough for the price. I'd love to see some more development of the experience itself, perhaps like a bunch of randomly generated rocks of all sizes on the surface to give it the feel of the Martian landscape we've seen in photos. It would be cool to see dust storms and other weather, or to have the rover handle differently to different kinds of terrain. I'd like to be able to explore the whole planet without having to "teleport" from one box to another, even if that meant some areas were more accurately depicted than others. I wouldn't mind a more game-like experience, perhaps driving supplies from one outpost to another. Even a few things like this would make it feel more immersive.
Red Rover is like a very promising demo or alpha version of the Mars game that I'd like to play. if Alan Chan decides this is all he would like it to be, I'm OK with that. But it could be more.
If you are like me having sometimes this thought '' let's go somewhere where the hand of humanity never set a foot '', this application offers 2 interesting things :
- real terrain data 1:1 scale
- you can opt for real satellite photo instead of arranged texture.
I'm happy to see that Alan Chan DID sticked to reality, or what we got from the satellites .
for gravity idk if he sticked to the martian gravity (3.7G) .

just for what i said above i forgive him for the PC controls : The app sounds oriented VR / controller, and i can just tell for PC : you get used to the controls , but ... mouse pretty please ? =) ( just look at mmos 3d / 1st person ).
This is a very cool concept, but hold off until they provide a control scheme that makes sense. Keep my five dollars, though. Please use it to better the simulator.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
i do recommend this experience. Keep in mind it's not for everyone. At this time there's not so much a game and there isn't a whole lot to really do. It's mostly about exploring the terrain and enjoying the realistic sights on Mars. Unfortunately, it is not exactly the most polished experience at the moment.
It's not a simulation. There is no challenge in traversing Mars on your Red Rover. This is not the movie The Martian. You're not Matt Damon driving around on Mars. Your rover can go just about anywhere with little challenge except maybe flipping over if you go too fast over some hard angles. You can also fly around sort of. The views are mostly gorgeous if you're into Mars at all, but keep in mind this is replicated realistic terrain taken from satellite imagery. So don't expect aliens or really much to see other than the sheer awesomeness of Mars. If Mars doesn't interest you, you'll be bored to tears.
I was disappointed that the different areas of Mars are not that big and you will soon see the edges of the map you can't travel past. I thought this would be like a fully realized globe you could explore but instead it is several mapped areas you can teleport to, but each one has edges that would make flat-earthers happy (or is it flat-Marsers?).
There is a day and night cycle that you can manipulate. Mars looks absolutely stunning at sunset or sunrise. I hope this gets updated so that the controls are better on the rover, especially flying. I did enjoy the 1st person view, but it seemed like it was too dificult to fly when in first person for some odd reason. There are some surprises to find on Mars, I think all of them were ideas stolen from The Martian, but they are pretty neat nonetheless.
Rate 6.5/10. This is a must buy for any VR space geek junkee. But be warned, it's feels like Early Access even though this is the full release. So keep your expectations low.
p.s. Here are some lines from Total Recall which I think is an appropriate way to describe anybody who decides to buy this game in its current state and a ready response to any hater.
