This is a VERY well-made Megaman-like. Not TOO difficult, not TOO easy, all special weapons are fun to use, OST is super catchy, would be GREAT as a beginner's Megaman game 100% I recommend.
It's a megaman game but more animal/tribal based, and it's a pretty good one at that! The control can be a bit finicky in some of the tighter spot, but nothing game-breaking and the game is quite generous with extra life and e-tank/Zon to compensate. Still not an easy game, but i had a very good time with it and the animal theme made it a nice change of scenery. The bosses are especially good and quite detailed with interesting pattern. The music is quite good too.
Long story short, it's a fun game easily worth a buy if you enjoy old school action platformers! ^^
I haven't been playing this game very long but I noticed a pretty bad input lag when playing the "Duma" stage. its exceptionally bad during the cloud jump section. The whole game does this. It wasn't noticeable at first, I thought it was my controller but alas its the game itself.
Not sure what is causing it but it makes the stages nearly impossible to beat due to the precise inputs required to play.
Really wanted to like this game but it is unplayable in this state. I would not recommend purchasing this game in this state.
Mega man, Cave man edition
This is classic Mega man goodness! More precisely, 4/5/6 from the Nes era, even the songs are in the right spot. Also, it's super cheap, you don't have to wait fo a sale. Grab it!
I enjoyed it, very fun Retro Game.
It's a fine Mega Man game, but there are some flaws.
Too many spike deaths, for one. An overreliance on insta-death does not make a game challenging, it makes it frustrating.
Also plenty of poor level design moments, like two different locations where slippery floor on a screen transition leads to your death if you don't immediately account for it by turning around or jumping. For example, there is a moment where the screen scrolls over, and as soon as it does, your character's momentum sends them sliding directly into a spike pit. Not cool.
There are some other small things, but the boss fights are fun, and you at least give an ample supply of extra lives and health replenishers to account for some of the cheaper moments.
I'd say anyone who likes Mega Man will probably get some enjoyment out of this, though probably best on sale.
Oh, and seriously, fix the broken English. You've had plenty of time.
As much as I love retro platformers and megaman games, I must say comment on a negative note on this one... it has terrible enemy design. Some enemies are activated too close to the player for the player to stand any chance against them, and the trajectories of some projectiles are unavoidable at best. A porcupine enemy in the ice stage shoots three projectiles that can't possibly be avoided. There is a huge spider enemy which once killed explodes releasing small projectiles which hit you every time. A few enemies even blend in the background, like the cactus enemy in the desert level which can't be distinguished from background props, or the flea monster in the same level, which is black like the background in which it appears. This may be remotely acceptable, but enemy energy drops is almost non-existent. In the game you're supposed to make use of a dog to help you in jumping and avoiding enemies etc, but in some instances the dog is useless because in the quicksand it doesn't even respond when you jump on it. I'd like to love this game also considering its budget and low cost, but gameplay is rage inducing.
As a lifelong Mega Man fan, I can safely say that TAYAL is one of the best fangames I have ever had the pleasure of playing. There is a lot to enjoy about this labor of love, and it deserves to be recognized as more than "just another Mega Man clone."
Something that quickly became apparent to me is that the developer clearly understands what makes the classic Mega Man games so enjoyable:
- The gameplay is tight and the controls are responsive.
- The level designs are distinct from each other and offer their own unique challenges.
- There are secrets cleverly hidden in each stage that greatly reward you for exploring and experimenting.
- The boss designs are detailed and charming, and each one has crazy attack patterns that will keep you moving and require unique strategies to overcome.
- The music is catchy and memorable. A few stage tunes will easily get stuck in your head.
There’s also a fun little twist on the boss rush that happens at the end of every classic Mega Man game.
TAYAL even offers some welcome quality of life improvements, such as being able to shoot while sliding and special weapons slowly refilling their energy over time (enemies don’t drop weapon refills). There are also some particularly creative uses for your Shiba Inu buddy (TAYAL’s version of Rush) and being able to summon him an unlimited number of times gives you a lot of freedom to experiment.
TAYAL’s story, art design, and overall style is based on Taiwanese mythology and folklore, and the bosses are based on real wildlife indigenous to Taiwan. As a result, the game has enough of its own feel and style that there were times where I forgot I was playing a Mega Man clone.
It’s also worth mentioning that shortly after releasing TAYAL, the developer was hired by Capcom as a game designer. Hopefully they can teach Capcom a thing or two about good retro game design.
At the moment there are only a couple negatives I can think of:
- From my experience, the special weapons aren’t particularly useful outside of boss battles, and most of them are just copy/pastes of preexisting Mega Man weapons. On the plus side you can charge them for more powerful attacks, and as mentioned earlier they slowly refill themselves over time.
- The English translation is unfortunately very poor, which can make the story a bit hard to follow at times (especially the ending). The developer is still updating the game, however, so hopefully it will receive a better translation at some point in the future.
With all that said, if you are a Mega Man fan or even just a fan of challenging action-platformers, you owe it to yourself to purchase TAYAL and give it a whirl. At $6 it is an absolute steal for this level of quality and polish, and the OST is worth purchasing as well just to give the developer the extra support. TAYAL has a lot of heart and it deserves far more attention than it has currently received. It's the dictionary definition of a hidden gem. Please show it your support!
A pretty good Mega Man clone brought down by some lag and the inputs being delayed. The lag is no big deal, but the inputs are a real problem. Because of this, quick and precise jumps aren't trustworthy. Hopefully the devs will fix this issue. However, the game has been like this for over a year now, so I'm not expecting much.
The inspiration in here is well taken from the NES Megaman games.
I was originally frustrated that there were enemy moves that couldn't be dodged or avoided, but there is a stunning/timing system similar to Punchout that adds a new layer of technique to the classic formula. Definitely frustrating, but realizing that it's there is really exciting.
Really fun except:
It has a tendency to drop/eat inputs like jumping, a cardinal sin for platformers. If you're within probably a body length of a ledge, there is a very good chance your jump won't go off. Even though your speed doesn't increase, you'll effectively need a running start.
Another improvement would be to remove the 1 or 3 frames of standing still that happens when you want to move from a standstill. For example, facing right, if I press right, Tayal faces right but stands still for a few frames before then moving to full speed. Removing that delay or even substantially reducing it should make the controls feel so much better.
Extremely minor: a brief edit and spellcheck of the text in the game should make it far more easy to read.
Great project and execution. One small patch and this will be golden.
A Mega Man clone with a boy who looks like Mowgli and a Shiba Inu... what more could you want? It's brutally difficult to boot.
Beautiful game. 10/10 soundtrack. Pretty challenging but never impossible. Uniquely Charming. Plays like a Mega Man rom hack but that is a good thing.
Really Solid game that plays a lot like a good Mega Man game. I felt like every stage is well designed, the boss fights are well thought out, and the music rocks!
I love the story of this. I'm a huge Mega fan and this one pushed all the right buttons for me! I love how it has to do with hunters and I'm not too familiar with Taiwanese folklore but this made me interested. The animals are sweet I love the yeah talk after selecting a stage. Let's not forget trusty ol dog. Very little to no bugs I've encountered but other than that is say if you like Mega Man and Gunvolt this is a must play. At $6 you won't waste your money!

This game is PRETTY DANG HARD. That said, it's a mostly faithful recreation of an early Mega Man-style game. Graphics are spot on. Enemy difficulty could use some tweaking as it might be a LITTLE too unforgiving, especially with enemies endlessly spawning in if you get JUST out of range of their spawning point and then walk back towards it.
Overall, we dig it, and it's a wonderful effort by the dev who made it!
A good megaman game from Taiwan.
Totally classic megaman style.
However, its' difficulty is much harder.
If you are ready for challenge, this is the one.
Disclaimer: This is my second review of the game. When it launched I criticized some big bugs that have since been fixed. I still recommended the game back then and after replaying it I definitely recommend this for any fan of Mega Man or action platformers in general. I decided to do a new review rather than update since my previous one focused almost exclusively on the few bugs.
Gameplay:
Control is perfectly tight, level design is just about almost perfect. The ability to shoot while sliding was also added, a nice addition. All of the enemies have distinct patterns to memorize and they're all fun to fight. Difficulty wise it's pretty tough but there are enough lives and health items to find that balance it out. Like I said the control is pretty much perfect so there won't be any issues with input. There are secrets in every stage too and they're all easy to spot out unlike some games in the OG MM and X series and they're still satisfying to discover. The only legitimate flaw I would say is some horrid enemy placement that leads to cheap deaths. As good as the games that inspired it!
Audio:
The audio is as big as the gameplay for a MM game, from enemy impacts to weapon effects and the soundtrack. While the soundtrack isn't as good as most MMs it's better than 5 in my opinion and 5 was still extremely good. The weapon and impact effects are super satisfying though. Audio wise its great!
Graphics:
The game looks super charming. The sprite work and character designs all have personality and the color choices mix to make a game that's pleasing to the eye. Aside from the audio effects the explosions from enemy deaths is great. The weaopns all look good and the UI is super easy to navigate (an underrated feature when you're used to horrible menus). The game looks a lot more pleasing than other "retro" games that have an overly pixelized look that doesn't even represent the NES era well at all. Tayal is up there just beneath Shovel Knight and A Whole New World as far as look is concerned for the retro indie subgenre. A very good looking game!
Conclusion:
This is the best MM clone I've played hands down. It's honestly up there with some of the better games in the series with it's superb controls, charming graphics and great audio. The level and enemy design are also great, the only flaw being some horribly cheap enemy placement that you wouldn't find in most MM games. If you're a fan of the OG MM series Tayal is a must buy. There are some other good choices on Steam but Tayal is the only one that's up there at least for me. You can tell they put a ton of effort into this one and it's a huge joy to play. Highly recommended!
Most of what I know about Mega Man is from watching other people play it, but I can recognize a good retro game when I see one. As far as I can tell the game is very faithful to the series, and it is certainly as hard as any NES game. You can play any of the 8 stages in any order, something that Mega Man is known for (and Silver Surfer). Each stage is themed after a boss that grants a new power when you beat him, so it does have a nice variety. I kind of tried all of the stages to see if I can find one that I can beat, but all of them are very hard. It has pretty unforgiving difficulty that includes instant death spikes and seldom checkpoints. Not that the game is unfair, but you will need to put in some practice if you want to get anywhere.
The game has a pet mechanic where you can use your doge to get a jump boost or to find a secret. You can also make the doge run but I am not really sure what it does (sometimes it takes a poop too). I don't have any complaints in terms of soundtrack or aesthetic - about as good as you can get without making a modern game. There are many fun achievements to support replay value, including some funny jokes. It also has competent game settings such as button config, vibration, volume control and screen size. As far as gameplay goes, it is a pretty competent retro game with decent controls; I did not have any noticeable problems aside from just sucking at the game.
Pros:
+ faithful retro design / nice aesthetic
+ competent gameplay / NES hard
+ good game settings / can rebind controls
+ many secrets & achievements
+ doge assist ;)
Cons:
- I don't really have any problems with the game. Personally, I would prefer to have more difficulty settings where spikes do not kill you instantly (and more checkpoints). If someone wants to play on the hardest mode, just make an achievement for it. I am sure the difficulty is there to replicate the Mega Man, but I don't think it would hurt to have optional difficulty modes.
Overall Thoughts: 9/10
Honestly, I don't see myself finishing the game because it just takes too much practice, but I am sure that some people will enjoy that aspect. So far this is the best Mega Man tribute that I played, although I have limited experience with the series. It's definitely a good retro game despite not being very friendly to casuals.
