The idea that looks good and exciting on paper was in fact poorly implemented. Maybe it was my high expectations, but Green Hell couldn't fulfill them. As it turned out, wandering through the jungle is actually more dull and frustrating than something fascinating.
First of all, let me talk about the gameplay. The hunger system that requires you to eat food with various macro elements to stay full of energy is quite interesting and unique. It encourages exploration and seeking a variety of foods, not just eating bananas. But the system of injuries became a very stuffy and tormenting one. A single injury leads to serious consequences, and you need certain resources to deal with them. If you don't have these resources, then it's a complete mess. Small and stealthy snakes and spiders will be everywhere and you will be bitten by them extremely often. If you are bitten by a snake, you will have a fever and venom poisoning. If the poisoning is quite easy to overcome, the fever should be mostly passed or treated by soup. If you don't have soup, you may faint from exhaustion and worms may crawl under your skin. They can be removed by using bones, but if you don't have them, they will stay there for a long time and will gradually worsen your mental state. If you go crazy, you will have hallucinations of tribesmen who can kill you pretty easily. The health mechanic is a very unfair and punishing part of Green Hell, making you want to quit as soon as possible.
To make it worse, the intelligence of enemies is pathetic and weak. The enemies are incredibly stupid, so it's super easy to exploit this to your advantage. Tribesmen and predators are very disappointing in their behaviour.
The technical state of the game just makes me want to cry. Crappy graphics that make me want to scratch your eyes so badly. Green Hell would be much better suited to some simple stylised graphics than photorealistic ones, The Long Dark is a great example. The rendering distance is just a joke. Objects are rendered right in front of my eyes. It just breaks the immersion. And bugs must have stuck to this game forever because each patch seems to only add more of them, not reduce them.
Irritating mechanics, poor AI, and a terrible technical condition make Green Hell impossible to enjoy. It's not a bad attempt to create a super realistic survival game, but unfortunately the development team either didn't have enough money, experience, people, or everything at once to implement their ideas well.
Terrible, becomes painfully boring after 10h of playing.
It's buggier than Ark, so I guess that in itself is an achievement to be proud of.
I will gladly come back to this game and change the review to positive, once the devs address the unaccaptable graphical issues and update the game. The draw distance of the details (regardless of the settings) causes all objects to pop up around the player every instant which totally destroys the immersion. The detail halo visible on the ground which changes the graphics completely on its border makes the game unplayable. In many far older open world games I haven't seen such problems.
Judging by the community discussions those issues are experienced by seemingly everyone playing this game. If the graphics receive a much needed update I will also update the review since I have seen and heard that the game is very unique and well designed in terms of gameplay.
the survival is kinda fun at first but becomes just a chore. The story is absolutely horrible and not fun to sit through. The amount of times they use the ayahuasca to push the narrative and whenever you see that alter you just get mad you have to sit through another farcry 3 type drug sequence.
10/10 of the story. Textbooks nowadays only say things like " colonialism causes thousands of death of natives" which sound really pale, but in this game's plot, "Civilized world" suffered same shit for the sake of their greed.
It's a great survival game that is fun to play co-op. Bit difficult to learn everything at the start but once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun!
Green Hell is one of those games that really makes you feel like you’re stuck in the middle of the jungle. It’s brutal, a bit stressful, but also super satisfying once you get the hang of it. Definitely not easy, but if you love survival games, it’s worth the struggle.
its a game of epic exploration and interesting guidelines really wish there was an actual game guide that you can buy like a hard cover or soft cover with some epic front cover
Game is not chill at all, too hard to understand. Crafting is very hard to understand. Overall, if you choose normal mode it feels like you are playing hardcore.
survival game with nutritions and wounds treament focused
also leech picking off simulator
This is a really immersive survival game. If you´re looking for that kind of thing, you came to the right place. The best advice I can give you is, that you shouldn´t rush it i.e don´t try to speedrun the game, explore the world, and that you should´nt look up anything, unless you absolutely want to.
If you keep these two things in mind, you´ll have a great time.
I have to add though, that I only played the story mode, and that I did buy the game while it was on sale, which I would recommend you to do aswell, since this game seems to be on sale quit often. Also the experiences I had with the building were´nt optimal. They weren´t bad, but it´s sooo slow. It takes forever to build something cool. It´s realistic but it´s not really fun, atleast in my opinion. But maybe that´ll change the more I play the game.
Uh, it's fun. There are lots of cool things there are also capybaras
If you like dying millions of times and losing everything every time you die, this game is for you. Great storyline, fight for survival at every step you take in the jungle. You're going to run through the forest, great expect rattlesnakes, jaguars, tigers, panthers and tapirs, not to mention the Waraha Tribe. Do you want to hide in a cave? Okay, watch out for scorpions, Brazilian wandering spiders and goliath birdeater spiders. Well, everywhere is dangerous, so maybe jump into the water, it would be cool if not for the piranhas and caimans and on the shore beautiful colorful frogs, of course poisonous. Well, there's nothing left to do but build a base, but again you have to be careful, lifting branches, logs, leaves, etc. you can be bitten by a centipede. To make it easier, remember not to drink water from the river because you'll get parasites, rainwater or boiled water is a good idea. The health bar depends on what you eat and drink, you have to provide your body with fats, carbohydrates, proteins and hydration. When all are at max your health bar is also full, when not, unfortunately the problem starts with fatigue etc., what more is there to write, just play :)
Is a great game, survival realistic and fun, with story behind but so interesting, with friend or your partner could be a great experience, just enjoy this game! I did and I recommend it!
I've bought it to play with my partner and cousin. I can say;
-Nothing lead you or show you to anything about how to do/craft/use stuff.
-Tutorial was full of bugs for me as I couldn't speak on walkie talkie after day 2 by pressing T and eh got frustrated.
-Having looong and unskippable dialogues just for the sake of "story" and not having proper game introduction was big no.
-Instructions aren't clear on notebook.
-Some of the stuff gets highligh if its lootable and some not. You must try to find how to loot it by yourself.
It could have way better tutorial as you cannot find everything that easily without spending so much time, dying for a reason that you cannot solve or spend hours on discovering it. And we weren't down for spending hours, keep dying and get frustrated to find "how to play" the game. Eh searching stuff on google also kills the joy.
Overall not a player friendly game after trying it for an hour. After that first impression, not gonna try to play again most likely unless they release some better introductions which is accessible in game.
i find it messed up that it takes about 2.5hrs to do just the tutorial and by then its too late to decide if u want the game or not, cuz ur passed the 2hr limit steam stands firm with.
also the nav in the menus and how to use stuff is absolutely nonsensical and ruins the entire game for me, which is why i discovered the first issue
i bought this game for steam deck, when buying it showed supported but now show not supported and the controller is not supporting and its very hard. to steam: please ask developers to fix the controller for steam deck when it already have support for consoles.
Was very interested in this game. Seemed like a hardcore-est version of "The Forest". Then I decided to get it (only $2 w/discount) and play with my friend for 3 hours. Well, that's all I needed to understand this game is going to go nowhere. Yes, it is difficult, no, there is no way/ shape/ fashion/ or form it should be impossible. Where are the rocks in a canyon? Where are dry leaves when it doesn't rain for a few in game days? Why do I walk through the woods just to watch a snake spawn under my feet and bite me? I understand some of these issues are bugs and be fixed. But the rest of the Co-Op experience was horrible. We never found each other, we never survived more than 10 minutes, the spawn rates are horrible, the map is confusing at times, and you are forced to turn your brightness up when it becomes night or you cant see anything at all. I am used to hardcore games, but this isn't even a game at this point. I highly recommend AGAINST this product.
For me this game seems to be a little bit of a split decision, as a lot of people love it, me on the other hand, this is so very boring.
The story is week and convenient, then the mechanics are incredibly serious, but yet the bugs in the game the unrealistic physics let this down in comparison.
Simply put; if a snake-bite in the bushes can kill you, then why did I fall to my death from a ledge I could ridge a bike over, or why can't I climb a rock with more success than a 3 yr old. You cannot have very serious game play and harsh conditions, without the game play being good enough to allow me to be able to adapt around them successfully.
So for me it's a pass, but like I said a lot of people seem to like it, so maybe i'm wrong.
On sale give it a blast if you fancy it.
Played to completion and not sure I experienced a single fun moment. It has its strengths but in general the game is tedious and the story is awful.
The games looks OK until you move, and then you realise that there is some sort of 'aura/bubble/circle' around you and that, as you move, everything around it 'pops' in: detail textures, shadows, you name it. There's nothing you can do about this regardless of settings or configuration.
If this doesn't bother you, maybe you'll be OK?
apparently there has been an issue where the game crashes after the tutorial and it hasnt been fixed for 4 years. it now will not let me play the game anymore at all. how is it possible no one has fixed this issue??
3/10
+ story
+ voice acting
+ music
- tons of bugs in a 6 year old game
- awful crafting system
got if for 3.05$
refunding to spend on a better game
super buggy mess and the devs obviously only care about console/vr players even tough they make the most sales on pc
This is an awesome survival game!
The whole lush tropical jungle setting is a very nice change of pace from the usually barren or apocaliptic wastelands you often encounter in these type of games.
The many different kinds of injurys, needs and health conditions are quite diverse, but not so overly complicated, that it would have a negative impact on the general gameplay fun.
The main campaign's story progression blends nicely into the background and never feels forced. And if you are looking for a more open survival challenge without the hassle of a storyline, the "spirits of amazonia" reduces the storytelling to a minimum.
Die over and over again. In order to save your progress you have to quit to the main menu, which is pretty bad design. I started getting pretty interested in the story, but staying alive is so difficult and you restart the game from the beginning if you die, unless you Choose the 'save and quit' option. Unfortunately, you better be sure your guy isn't sick before you save, otherwise you just saved an endless death-loop. Maybe I haven't put in Enough time to make a fair review, Unfortunately The crafting just ended up being too tedious And the let down of having to restart from the very beginning three times turned me off. I may give it another go in the future but right now I can't recommend.
Tried to play with a friend. He joined my server but he couldn't use the keys that show the map, watch or anything else. All he could do it pick things up. And, as we were in the same server, he could see my in game chats but i couldn't see his as well as the fact we couldn't see each other in the game either.
Green Hell is my favorite survival-focused game of all time. No other game in this genre that I've ever played matches its deep focus on survival mechanics. In a way, it has ruined other survival games for me in making them seem shallow in comparison.
PROS:
+ Every aspect of survival feels rewarding, even when you have mastered the rules of the game (big ups to the food system which requires you have a balanced diet consisting of different macronutrients)
+ The visuals and audio are pretty damn good at immersing you in a jungle environment
+ The game is still fun with no hostile human mobs, as the survival mechanics stand on their own (this is good for people like me who want to RP a Primitive Technology or Alone-type scenario)
+ The story mode is well made, and is a good complement to the freeplay mode
+ Building strikes a nice balance of being tedious (because at the end of the day, you're supposed to be just one person) but allowing you to get some cool structures made
NEUTRALS (i.e. pro or con depending on your preferences)
* Learning curve is steep at first, and can be annoying; maybe you won't be dying a lot, but you WILL starve, get sick, get injured, etc. as you learn the rules of the world
* I think there are no more updates; the game is "complete" at this point
* Only one map (plus an expansion area), and it's not super huge, but it is handcrafted
CONS:
- Eventually, you will understand most spawns of resources and enemies on the map, resulting in a post-scarcity level of mastery, which removes most sense of danger; at this point the game becomes a wilderness simulator where you just chill and do whatever you want
Game is very difficult at first, a lot of things to learn and understand but once you get the grasp of things it starts to become much enjoyable. Highly recommend to play with friends.
My wife and I really tried to enjoy this game but there is far too many bugs in multiplayer. Anytime me or my wife would save the game and leave, it would never actually bring us to the right spot when we loaded back in. I just loaded up after we left off in the third offering area and my wife went to load in, I loaded back way before I "saved and quit" so only saving the game at those save points seem to be the only thing that matters AND my wife CONSTANTLY spawns in at random ass locations all over the map?? We spawned with the grappling hook on us, but we were placed back before the ritual had begun and we no longer had any of the mission objectives available. Grinding hard to adapt to the game and survive just to have all your progress constantly reset because of bugs, just isn't worth it at all.
TLDR: It could be fun even with all of the learning curves but its too buggy to be worth playing as all your hard work is likely to be completely undone with shitty saving mechanics (in multiplayer, haven't played single player)
This game is exactly what it sounds like. A Green Hell until you know what you are doing. Once you have things figured out though it is so much fun.
It amazes me, but Creepy Jar is still keeping an eye on this game! Coming from The Forest and Sons of the Forest, I actually had way more fun with this one. Survival wise, this one is much more demanding. I'd consider it hard compared to the Forest franchise that was very easy regardless of the difficulty settings and standards. In here, you really need to know your stuff when heading into the jungle—dying is just part of the experience, at least for the first few hours.
You could spoil some of the fun by reading the wiki, but for the most part, common sense goes a long way. Think getting burned in the jungle can be treated with honey and some leaves? You’d be right! A lot of things in this game work exactly how you’d expect them to.
That said, there are a few weird bugs, like cloning items or meat. And yeah, some things never spoil if you manage them properly—but honestly, these little imperfections are easy to overlook. Forget about them and move on, don't abuse them. Play the game. As for the story, I’d recommend not rushing through it too quickly. And don’t forget—there’s built-in DLC to complete after the main story!
There's a lot of bugs but and its a bit annoying that the jaguars are literally programmed to spawn on you when you're 0 energy about to pass out and u cant even walk let alone attack but still quite enjoyable with friends, chill atmosphere
really, really buggy. story is mediocre at best, ground leaches???
The crafting system is a chore, to the point that drinking dirty water and using random mushrooms to get rid of the parasites is just a better deal than looking for a way to have clean water. The constant moving around (at least in story mode) means that creating a base is just not worth it.
in conclusion, It's similar but significantly worst than the forest.
This game is an instant craft survival classic. Part of the dev team comes from Dying Light 1 so you can expect a great polished game. Mechanics work great here in every aspect, the experience of being in that jungle scenario and ambience is tense and very rewarding when you succeed on what you're trying to achieve. Story also is interesting, both for the base game and dlc. Recommend it right away if you like hardcore craft survival.
A truly immersive survival experience with extreme attention to detail. It's a game so yes, there are bugs and decent learning curves at first exposure however-
For those who play survival games for the survival factors this game raises the bar with pushing the player to master their environment by identifying various plants, hunting, self doctoring and evading or defending against opposing tribes as well as a constant fight for ones own mind in a battle for not only survival but comfort. It offers wide space for creativity after a comfortable ground is achieved. Ontop of that there's a story to unravel to add to the adventure. This games pretty great, it earns it's name! you will struggle at first and on and off at times, However perseverance is rewarded and for anyone looking for that hardcore semi realistic survival experience, this game delivers.
My biggest advice? Be creative! There's a lot of early on things a player can craft that isn't straight forwardly told, for example a fire bow does not require discovery to make if you understand the components that go into making it. Apply logic and experiment!
My biggest warning?? This game runs pretty toasty so turn those shadows down if you love your hardware, and patience is a necessity to get comfortable in this Green Hell.
It is more fun trying to survive in the jungle from my recliner in air conditioning than in the actual jungle. I am addicted.
It's a blast especially with friends. Its challenging but fun especailly when you hear all your friends screaming in terror lol
5 hours in. The game is beautiful but also you're in a jungle so all you can see are leaves in your face. Really really nice looking leaves. It is way too hard for me. You can customize the difficulty but even the easiest difficulty is hard and making it easier means turning off dangers. I'm not sure why I can't have dangers on but a bit more forgiving. The story is a bit sparse but it's been okay so far. The map has no marker showing where you are but you do have a watch with coordinates so you can take your own notes as you find things. It's a lot of running around and backtracking and eating snails. Respect for those that are good at this game but this is the end of my jungle journey.
This Game goes hard. storyline is mad not to mention the adrenaline rush when your casually building something then turn around to see a hungry cannibal or leopard trying to eat you. Would highly recommend people play this game especially if your a fan of games like ARK, and The Forest
it's a pretty fun game, but
there are so many bugs in this game
that it's hard to play anymore.
Green Hell sits squarely in the "also known as" portion of the dictionary for "hardcore survival". It doesn't do anything spectacular given the AI limitations, the underwhelming building system, and the total lack of direction for survival. As frustrating as it can be, it's still a great game, even for a few hours. It'll scratch that survival itch until you finally complete your base and then wonder what to even do next, which will inevitably be watching a lone tribesman demolish your 40 hours of grinding for four walls and roof in precisely 2.3 seconds.
Still fun though.
The game is very hard at first because you will not understand what the game mechanics are. You will see symbols on the HUD screen and you will have no idea what they are, you health will keep draining, your stamina will deplete, and soon you will succumb to the environment. However, after 20+ deaths you will start to understand the game mechanics. This game is addictive and fun to play, but only after you get the hang of it. Initially, I considered quitting the game because I got bored of dying over and over again, but once you understand the game mechanics the game becomes enjoyable.
Spawn in, bit by snake, died.
Respawn, attacked by hostiles, died.
Respawn again, scorpion, died.
.....Respawned.... again.... get lost, for what felt like hours, in the same section of jungle and can't figure out where to go. Finally figure out a new path, get tossed across the map due to some bug in the terrain. Managed to survive that somehow. Frustrating at times yet still fun, but only if you have someone else to play with. Don't do this shit alone. The buddy system makes for a "double the misery, double the fun" sort of scenario. :)
the story pace of this game is kinda slow at first but once you've reach mid game the story finally get interesting. this is one of the hardest survival game i've played so far but also one of the best game i ever played.
If you love losing your sanity and killing nonexistent indians and it always raining so no fire to cook anything than this is the game for you.
Great story, hard game till you get the hang of it's fun playing with a few friends makes it a little easier.
World Corrupted after 10h of gameplay.
So many visual and gameplay bugs.
cannot recommend until you fix this game
Green Hell is a hardcore yet captivating survival simulator from Creepy Jar that throws the player into the harsh conditions of the Amazon jungle. There are no zombies, mutants, or fantastical creatures here—just you, the wild nature, and deadly dangers at every turn. The game will test your attentiveness, patience, and strategic thinking. If you enjoy hardcore challenges and are ready to face the true hardships of the wilderness, then Green Hell is for you. Tough, but insanely exciting!
Unplayable with friends as entirely random DC's completely delete all progress.
Everyone so far has experience a disconnect with server/players IN ONE SESSION which completely deletes everything on your person. A friend had also DC'd his first time in single player and lost everything. We've had 6 people in our group report this issue so I have no idea how anyone has left a positive review when the game is poor to begin with.
The game is in an broken state and they are not going to fix it. This game has been out for 2 years and it's been an issue for 2 years. Do not buy this game.
