Do not buy this game. There's already a game breaking bug when pressing ESC, as you cannot return to the game and you need to play it again from the start.
The story seemed to be interesting, but in the end it doesn't make much sense and you get no explanation for what happened or where you are :-(
The walking speed is fixed and you can't run. Seems to make make sense, so you can listen to the dialogue, but you can barely hear what's being said. So now you're walking in snail speed, reading a bunch of text, which in the end doesn't matter, as there is noch real ending :-|
Graphically it's okay, but that's everything that's positive about the game.
A highly-detailed, slightly confusing storyline coupled with decent graphics, and a bright, linear atmosphere.
It's a good game! And yes, I know it says I have 0 hours played. No idea how. I've played through it before lmao. But hey...
I'd recommend it anyways.
Nice scenery and narration, but after walking for about an hour I walked through a door that I assume was supposed to load into the next area and instead completely fell off the map. With no choice but to exit back to the menu and restart, I simply gave up not wanting to spend another hour of time and probably have the same thing happen again. Again, I enjoyed the scenery and narration, the whole reason I buy walking simulator/introspective narration games like this, but this one is broken and should be attempted at the purchaser's own risk. Also, if you do decide to try it out, don't ever, ever, ever, EVER, press ESC. It will pause the game on the main menu and there's no way to unpause, the only option is to exit and thereby completely start the game over since there's no continue/checkpoint feature in place. Likely no checkpoints because the game is short (I see people in posts saying they completed it inside of an hour), but when your game is bugged and broken and drops people off the map at random, it might be nice to at least not make them start over from scratch. Also, if the game is going to force people to restart every time the program goes tits up or they accidentally press ESC, can we at least have a narrator that doesn't walk about the same speed as a snail covered in molasses crawling through a tar pit in mid-January? Cannot recommend.
I am a huge fan of walking simulators but this just wasn't the game for me. Good scenery and narration, but just kind of dry. Also glitched the map within 20 mins of playing by just doing normal navigation.
Does The Narrator Ever STFU???
Ghoststory is one of the most "walky" / plodding / meandering, slow and generic of all Walking Sim or First Person Adventure games I have ever played. The narrator rambles incessantly about a bunch of random shit you have no idea what he's even referring to as you wander through bland environments at a snail's pace. While I don't mind the lack of a run button for this genre of game, do I really have to be penalized for daring to divert off of the one linear path the game intended for hoping there might be something different to look at (or interact with, collect... anything) down a separate path? Just another bland dead end that I then have to slowly backtrack to the one throughline to progress? Which is an apt metaphor for this game's shallow, woeful dialog.
I don't mind the Walking Sim genre's slower pace but give me something to look at beyond a dark tunnel or generic forest environment for the first half hour if all I'm going to be doing is listening to the narrator ramble incessantly about nothing of any particular consequence or interest. An auto-walk toggle to just have the character automatically move forward would be nice in such leisurely titles, rather than having to obnoxiously sit there holding the W key constantly.
While the game's graphics and environments look nice, Ghoststory will seldom ever give you a passage of time without the narrator ranting about some garbage that oozes faux profundity. This same voice actor is present in several other Walking Sim games and nearly every single one of them that I've played have had the same completely bland delivery and over-written (and much too plentiful) dialog.
What this game and others like it that are a slog to get through in the Walking Sim genre don't realize is to let the player just observe the ambiance of their environment for 2 fucking seconds in silence without being beaten over the head with non stop dialog would do more for immersion than berating them constantly with walls of text being blandly read that don't even elucidate the player to any semblance of a rewarding story.
Buggy, broken mess. I could go on and on, but I'll give just two very clear examples:
1. There is no save feature
2. If you hit the escape button to pause the game, there is no way to restart the game. For reals. The only way out of the pause screen is to exit the whole damn game. At which point, see #1.
Worthless!!!
The great example of a bad walking simulator. No decent story, no exciting twists, generic visuals and generic sound, no interactions with the world, painfully slow moving speed with no run option. It obviously strives to copy Dear Esther's aesthetics, but unfortunately fails as this game itself is nothing more then a boring hour-long chore.
Video (15 mins of gameplay + comedy commentary):
https://youtu.be/v8vLRXpK9Xstl;dr: Gonna give Ghoststory a VERY tentative thumbs up for now with the hopes that its current SHOWSTOPPING bugs are addressed.
PROS
- Ghoststory is very pretty, good looking textures, great lighting, beautiful sunsets.
- The music is well placed and from what we can tell all dialogue is voiced.
- Easy to navigate and we found it pretty impossible to get accidentally lost.
CONS
- As of writing this (June 30) there appears to be no checkpoints or any way of continuing your game. This is because if you hit Esc to go to the menu, the ONLY option that works is to exit back to the main menu. And if you do this, you have to start a new game. So even if you were going to play the game in one sitting, if you wanted to even pause or accidentally hit Esc for any reason, you're stuck and have to start over.
- Voice over is very quiet/difficult to hear and there is no way to turn it up.
- Menu options are very sparse. You can only change two things, which is "graphics" between low/medium/high/epic and "resolution" between 640x480, 1280x720, 1920x1080, and that's it.
OTHER THINGS
[*] While the narration is nice, it makes for GIGANTIC amounts of subtitles. Not bad in and of itself, but something to know that you'll be seeing huge blocks of text often, and may have to focus on them instead of the beauty of the game due to the overly quiet voice over.
CONCLUSION
We're really hoping some of this stuff is fixed as the game itself seems like an interesting and contemplative adventure.
This game has potential (but actually only at the current price with 40% off, ~4,99€), if you like to enjoy pleasent mood and just listen to a story while walking through a nice scenery. It has decent coherent graphics and pleasant music. Unfortunately currently this is all ruined by amateurish programming and bad sound mixing.
Problem#1: Don't ever press Escape! They might have added a new pause menu to avoid that players unintentionally leave the game to the main menu by just pressing Escape and so have to restart it as there is no save feature, but it doesn't have a resume button so you anyways have to click on Exit and still end up in the title menu.
Problem#2: Opening this mentioned pause menu once by pressing Escape will break every input and to make it even better you can even open it during the splash screens. All you can do then is operating the title menu but then you will end up in a nice screen saver that you can only close with Alt+F4.
Problem#3: First when you click New Game you'll be greeted by a loud noise that sounds like a heavy door being smashed shut, pretty much painful for headphone users. Then there is the main point of the game, the protagonist telling the story, but I can barely understand what he is saying under the sound of rain and the music. I have been setting my equalizer settings to flat and trying find the frequency range of the voice actors voice to simply increase it, all to no success.
Problem#4: When the protagonist is talking, there is always this large block of 5-6 lines of subtitles on the bottom of the screen. I don't want read them, I actually would like to listen to the voice actor (and understand him) and to have a look at the scenery. This large block of text is killing so much mood and there is no way to disable it.
I will change this review if this game does ever get enjoyable within the next ten days, otherwise I will refund it and let this review stay.
Deadline is over and I got my refund, zero reaction by the developers to my feedback in the forum.
No save areas even when finding a loading section. If anything goes wrong it's a restart of entire game. Do not hit escape unless you want to retart all over, I at least learned that early on. 45mins in a section didn't load which meant a complete restart, no thank you. This is a walking sim like Ester but it's a broken game, do not buy this, not even for the summer sale.
Great game, lovely nature ;)
This game is pretty much a walking simulator, similar to games like Dear Esther or Firewatch where you walk through levels and a dude talks and you listen to a story. This one is a narrator reading a journal of a man who was trapped on an island. Here's what I think of it.
Positives:
The voice acting/narration is very well done
The levels are beautiful and well made
The music is very nice
The game is well paced, at no point does any narration end up overlapping
Negatives:
There is no options menu at all
The first level has some rain filter on the screen even though its not raining
There are a couple typos in the subtitles, mainly on the dates like '21th'
The framerate is locked at 62fps
There seems to be motion blur which is annoying
It doesn't tell you the controls, didn't know you could open doors at first
In the final level I think the level doesn't really load properly so when you turn around you randomly see white things pop in
Overall its a pretty decent little story game, not much to it but its pretty good for what it is. It does have a few flaws but they're not too noticeable. 7/10.
CONS:
- No full controller support, you can only walk forth, back and to the sides, not steering the camera
- Boring gameplay, super basic walking simulator
- The sound levels are crap and there are no audio sliders at all
- No settings for graphics
- If you press escape you get right back to the menu and you can not continue the game just restart.
PRO:
Statues have p*nises
