A Hidden Objects Game based on a Comic Strip

(Version française plus bas)

What this game is: An adventure and hidden objects game, based on the series Blake and Mortimer created by Belgian-French comic book creator Edgar Jacobs. Jacobs worked on the series from 1943 until his death in 1987. The series has been continued by a team up until today, and the story in the game is based on two books published in 2006 and 2009.

How does it work? The game works quite well, doesn't have any apparent bugs, and is presented as if it were a comic strip. It respects the original esthetics created by Jacobs, and contains a few puzzles that are not very difficult to solve. The game is very easy to play. It offers two types of game settings, one that is quite relaxing, except in a couple of puzzles, and another one with a time constraint (not so relaxing). The music is good, even if it is a bit repetitive as it loops around.

The good points: Simple and relaxing game, unless you use the timer setting. No bugs as far as I could observe. The Esthetics is pleasing and respect the original work by the creator of the Blake and Mortimer series. It offers nice music and easy gameplay. Its files take less than 100 MB on your HD, and will run on a 10 years old PC.

The bad points: The game is very short, you will normally complete it in less than two hours. One thing that was not clear for me at the beginning of the game was the fact that some scenes require you to shift left and right in order to pick up objects and see details you need to see. Not a big negative point really. Did I say the game is a bit short? I would have liked the game to have at least double the content that was presented, as I had some fun revisiting both characters adventure.

My take on this: If you like relaxing games, this is probably it. It also has the advantage of being cheap, and if you can get it at a discount, well, what are you waiting for? This game is not as difficult or as long as many other Hidden Objects and Adventure games out there, but it is still worth playing, specially for those that like the Blake and Mortimer series.

Blake and Mortimer: The Curse of the Thirty Denarii is a mobile app-like point and click adventure game based on the final French novel of the same name. Some trivia, the translation both of the book, the game, and the title are awful. The 30 "denarii" translated here refer to the 30 pieces of silver paid to John the Baptist for betraying Jesus in the bible. The more you know. Anyway, this is a really crap game, no matter how bad or good the book it's based on might be.

This is just a shallow mobile app style point and click adventure game, the kind you can play for free on mobile (and there are HUNDREDS to choose from), so charging money for this garbage on Steam is simply not ok.

From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.

There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics.

The game features mostly static, barely animated 2D images, the kind of thing you expect to see in browser/flash games. While the artwork itself, while mediocre, might be considered passable, the visual presentation here is negligible, it might as well be a slideshow or a Youtube video. Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Asteroids had more advanced animation and visuals going on than this game does.

For gameplay purposes, because the user interface for this game is mostly just 2D static images... it might as well be a browser game. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to appeal to serious gamers on PC.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. That's right, only 3. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is to be expected. Gamers just didn't take this low quality game seriously, and for good reason.

Blake and Mortimer: The Curse of the Thirty Denarii is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.

This game offers diverting entertainment. It contains small puzzles with a rather simple level of difficulty and search images, which positively differ from the usual hidden object games in that no objects have to be searched for that have no relation to the environment. It is actually an interactive comic and anyone who knows and likes Franco-Belgian comics and in particular "Blake and Mortimer" should definitely grab this one. The only negative point is that the game is a bit too short in terms of playing time.

Puzzles were not hard and it was mostly a comic/hidden object game. The story was good but not realistic. OK for kids.

Wasted potential, the game.

First of all, it was way too short! A cleverer use of the story might have doubled the game lenght. Atleast it didn't spoil all of the comic. I intend to seek it out after this.

The original comic art is gorgeous, and in many places utilized very cleverly. Hidden object mechanics and minigames are used in clever ways to compliment the art and the plot. I even admire some of the points where the original artwork and the mediocre stock images meet.

Inconsistency in art and translation is what totally breaks this game. Most of the art created for the game is nowhere near the style of the comic and not exactly consistent within itself either. Several hidden objects aren't actually hidden in the background, but floating on contrasting backgrounds.

With a little digging it appears this game was originally published in French. Whoever translated it messed up some of the object names pretty badly.
