Negative:
Clumsy game play,
Not working correctly triggers for scripts - example I needed several times visit this same room before story can progress.
Bugs - most annoying character can lock itself when opening cabinet or passing by hatch.
Final word:
I disappointed on trailer looks interesting but not worthy even when on sale.
I am usually a fan of these small atmospheric adventure games... I cannot say I like this one.
Visually it's fine.. outside of the moments you need to wait for the trippy visuals to move the story forward.
It's this artistic license that hurts the pacing of the game.. there are some scenes that you have no idea what to do, but wait...
There's a lot of waiting in this game, and I got tired of waiting.
I may come back to this game, but I doubt it.
Decent game, Depth of field is overused and examining objects tanked my framerate with a 2080ti @ 4k. no way to turn it down as it's grouped into post processing object. luckly as an UE game you can VIA config file.
Interesting SCIFI walking simulator, I enjoyed my time with it. Looks very pretty.
Elea's Episode I is, in more ways than one, all over the place. Its skilfully created sci-fi setting and engrossing story arc work perfectly together, and you are eventually lead to a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more of it. Sadly, the protagonist is afflicted by unsteady movement and her ability to interact with items is often dependent on the player finding a suitable camera angle. That, added to the almost inexistent interface, the unreliable save system and the second-rate audio mixing and voiceovers, truly hinders the overall experience, particularly for a pseudo-walking simulator. Elea's scope feels too ambitious, and the result is a downgraded version of what could have been a genuinely promising game.
I'd be willing to excuse most of where the game fails with its slow walking, wacky controls and sometimes just outright broken mechanics for the story, except that even there it falls flat as it leaves you wondering what the hell is going on and why.
So, summed up it leaves me little to no reason to want to continue to play the game, so for now I'll refund and maybe come back to it in the future.
Elea has a fun sci-fi story premise. The “childhood disease” discussed in the game summary isn’t a disease like you think of illnesses, and brings up all sorts of twisted images, including the quizzes about how many 5-year olds you can take in a fight. You can read the game summary and watch the trailer for other story details. The graphics are very nice and controls are good and easy to use for navigation.
So what’s the problem? In my opinion, the developers couldn’t decide what kind of game they wanted to make, so gameplay is all over the place and it doesn’t do any genre exceptionally well.
Walking sim? That would be boring, right? So the devs make you explore in the dark with the worst flashlight ever. Technology in flashlights apparently have degenerated greatly in the future. This aspect made me just want to get it over with rather than explore the house (say goodbye to those achievements). Once you’re aboard ship you have lights, but you can only go into certain places and I didn’t feel like the story was flushed out enough from the places I could go.
Action? Can’t have a game without it apparently. But they toss that aspect at the end with one timed chase sequence. It was okay, but action players I'm guessing will think – that’s it? Non-action players will ask – did you have to do that at the end?
Adventure/Puzzles? Nothing challenging. There are a few tasks to complete and puzzling out of things to advance in the game. It was okay, but on the level of a walking sim kind of challenge and not a hardcore adventure game challenge.
This isn’t a horrible game by any means, I just think it lacks focus on what kind of game it wants to be and so I can’t really recommend it.
If you like acid trips and atmospheric gameplay this is the game for you!
"Probably should stay away if you have some sort of Photosensitive epilepsy because it can get really crazy."
All in all, the latest update fixed all problems I had with the game and I can finally recommend it. I'm looking forward to Episode 2.
Also, I should mention you have to use some brain power. You might think you get stuck, but you are just not thinking hard enough.
I found out about ELEA from an interview with the two developers behind the game on Epic’s page and intrigued bought it as a support. It’s an interactive adventure/walking simulator in the good traditions of What Remains of Edith Finch and Tacoma. As a similar game it is well crafted with very immersive SciFi visuals and environment, accompanied by a good story. The two biggest concerns for me are the low polygon human characters and the unprofessional voice acting of the NPCs, which a bit break my immersion. But I can’t complain much, because of the small dev team and probably scarce resources behind this indie project. As I mentioned before – the visuals are very well polished, as well as the lighting and the sound design. The “not for everybody” tag comes in mind when I remeber the psychedelic parts of the journey, but personally I liked them.
As I can see from other reviews, people either like these games or they don’t. They commonly complain that games in this genre aren’t really games - mainly because there are no real decisions to be made, there is slow walking involved or the player have to invest time to read notes and listen conversations to figure out the story. In this case the slow walking (only for the first half of the game) was present, the notes/diaries also, but for example the main character can die in a scary situation. My other complaint is about the cost – 10 euro is a bit much for the first part of an episodic game. The most important thing for me is that the story is very intriguing and thought-provoking, so I am happy with the experience and can’t wait for the second episode.
ELEA obviously is a walking simulator game in which you relive the experiences of the main heroine in her home and on a space station. The beginning is a bit slow, but later in the game the pacing is fine. One negative thing is the length of only 2 hours. Though for me it was worth the playthrough.
Pros
- A great story – you have to invest time in reading notes to fully understand what is going on.
- Beautiful visuals and lighting.
- Good sound design.
Cons
- Slow walking at the beginning of the game.
- A frustrating cliffhanger ending.
- Short – you can finish it for about 2 hours.
This game is really not for everyone - if you appreciate great visuals and a bit of digging to understand the compelling story, then it's for you. Main complaints from reviews so far seem to be slow movement at the beginning and the psychedelic art, which I personally don't have a problem with. The sound design and music score are lovely, the visuals are with awesome quality and the voice acting is fine. If you are into slow-paced story games, this is a great one for you!
The game is definitely on the crazy side. Crazy but fortunately quite interesting story wise side. I like how the developers are using some of the Kojima's P.T. gameplay elements. An overall excellent little gem in the walking simulators genre.
ELEA is a very genuine hallucinogenic experience - in the veins of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Everybody's Gone To The Rapture. I like the narrative, the setting and the visuals (very similar to those in Mass Effect and Alien Isolation). The soundtrack is also very impressing - at some places, it sounded like an AAA game. The greatest frustration for me is the quirky control with mouse and keyboard - the game is obviously designed with a gamepad in mind. Overall it's a satisfying experience for 5 bucks.
Shaping up to be something special
Elea is a journey through the memories and fillings of a woman trying to reunite her family. All this is wrapped in an intriguing sci–fi setting, which is visually quite astonishing, considering it is an indie title made by a small team. If I have to put a genre etiquette on the game, “walking simulator” will suit it well, although don’t expect Elea to be playing itself. There are puzzles which are not a mere formality. Rather, kind of like in a classic point and click adventure game, in order to fully enjoy yourself, you have to be in the mentality of tinkering and experimenting with the environment around you (which admittedly can sometimes hinders the game’s flow). Speaking of environment I rather enjoy the hardish sci–fi world of Elea but what made impression on me are the characters. Their relations often seem not to be very straightforward. At this point it is quite sublet, more of a promise, but I really hope the mature themes and story element will manifest themselves in the sequential episodes.
A few words about the early accesses. The game is very clearly a passion project of a small team. As such it has it rough edges, both in the side of bugs as well as not completely streamlined gameplay elements. The team however does frequent update and is on the watch in the forums for any feedback you can provide. So, if you are into engaging in conversation with the developers, and seeing how the game evolves and is shaped by the feedback, this is a perfect opportunity. If not, however I would recommend to wait for the official release as I’m sure that after a couple of updates it will be a smoother experience.
I’ve been a hardcore Sci-fi fan as long as I remember, so it’s only natural that some walkthroughs of Elea caught my glimpse on Twitter & YouTube. Soon enough I bought the game at a very reasonable price for an episodic game – and boy this was a great purchase. It took me roughly about 2 hours to finish the first episode and there is still more as I’ll have to play it all over again to get all the achievements. The developers did great job making the world believable, although some of the weird psychedelic scenes almost burned my eyes. The main let down for me was the cliffhanger at the end of the episode & I hope the second one to be released very soon.
- Some words about the story
The story is really nice & it's somewhat easy to understand, especially when you read all notes and listen to the dialogue. It doesn’t get boring for me, which is a must for a walking simulator game. Of course you have to keep in mind that there are jumps in time and this can be a bit confusing.
- Some words about the graphics
The game looks exceptionally good and have really AAA graphics for an indie game. Everything is polished enough and have that specific Alien & Mass Effect vibe around it. It seems that the devs use dynamic lighting and some great materials, which makes immersion easier – at a times it was even a bit scary for me.
- Some words about the interaction with the world
You can interact with a lot of objects, which allows you to understand the game world better. I had some issues when playing with keyboard & mouse /like fast rotation of the view, some issues with grabbing objects and etc./, so I had to switch to a controller. With a gamepad it was a great adventure with good use of vibration effects and I think the guys behind the game clearly paid more attention and had in mind the console development before the PC one. In the end I felt a bit confused when the main heroine was in the strange room near the ocean and had some issues with figuring the way out. My suggestion to the developers is to make the progression in the game more intuitive in the future episodes.
- Some words about the sound
The sound design of this game is great! It’s very polished for an indie game and I have very little remarks – I didn’t like some Fxs and steps. The biggest issues I had were with the voice acting – the main character sounded very professional, but some of the NPCs were bad – like recorded with a low-cost microphone. But overall the sound helps you to fully immerse in the setting and especially in the big ship I felt like playing Alien Isolation.
My verdict about Elea is an easy one – this game is great! If you haven’t played it and you like the combo - sci-fi and adventure walking sims you should really try it – the price of 5 $ during the Early Access is a bargain!
For the small price it is worth it if u like easy puzzles and a short story and sounds and scenery of SciFi and Space, etc. About 3 hours from start to finish, but at that price its a BARGAIN.
Not much to the story, i mean its nice, but doesnt really get engaging, but thats ok. The scenes or atmosphere and graphics, now THAT is awesome! I love SciFi stuff and this is one of the best looking ive seen, maybe since Alien : Isolation from years ago. After the ending seeing the Credits, i cant believe so few Devs did this game!
Interesting beginning, even if it is a little too crazy. Looks good, but the controls with mouse/keyboard are not optimal. Using gamepad is the preferable way to play this game. At least at the moment. The trailer shows a lot of spaceship locations, but I've yet to see them. The narrative is too chaotic until now. Hoping for some explanations of what exactly is happening to Elea. Interested to see where it goes though.
well polished game that i'll keep playing, but just know it's got quite a slow pace, lots of slow uneccesary walking, and as others say it's a bit trippy.
besides that, well polished game that i can recommend in a sale
A movie-like experience, maybe Kubrick inspired, the story gets unfolded while you progress, with very little clues. Keeps you wanting to find more, with some crazy visuals and dreamlike sequences. Sounds and great voice acting help to create the ambiance and compliment the visuals. Using joystick is a good option.
There are some bugs, as expected from early beta, but as far as I can see, they get fixed as soon as reported.
The best example, which can desribe it, is the last season of the Twin Peaks TV show - the pace is killing slow, the story sounds simple and linear, your character objectives are trivial and you could easily get lost what is happeing, when moving between "chapters" in this Episode 1. No kidding, certain parts of the game are going to give you serious thoughts about your mental condition and why you are doing this to yourself - God you are never sure what is going to happen on screen next!
Yet somehow, once you shut down your PC, and the heat from the GPU is gone, you wan't to come back and see a little bit more and spent another 30 minutes moving around trying to figure out how to solve this super easy objective you have at hand.
Speaking of the objective these are clear one liners assigned to the "O" letter on your keyboard, hinting you on how to drive the story forward and sometimes demanding from you to go classic adventure style, exploring and wandering arround inside a house, speceship or an exotic neigborhood, mapping where the cellar or the med bay is, while searching for a temproary item to add to the simplistic in-game inventory, just to loose it a minute later.
Not perticluary fun, but it serves well to involve you into the very great detail of the game world.
It's good when you have it however there are incosistencies, where this machanics are gone and very early the gameplay starts to punnish the player, asking you to wait several minutes for an event to happen, making you wander is this a cutscene, do I have to wait for something to finish or I have to do something about this. It goes that far, that you might end on the Title screen with a bittersweet mission accmplished feeling and never realising this is just a "Game Over" situation, and there is more in this First Episode to uncover.
And belive me this game is a feast for the senses, sucking everything that you can exeprience from you. With a gorgeus, minmalistic, sci-fy look and feel and killer sound-track and ambient sounds, which are bringing you back to the roots of the adventure gaming and Myst, while in another moment are making you want to put the raving glasses and pants on. The psychadelics moments are common, pulling you quickly out of the cozy experience like an ice cold shower, just to brind you back into your pijama and worm slippers for another round of slow and steady exploration.
It has it's moments where it feels like an AAA title, and not like an Indie project.
We are about to see how the narrative unfolds, but my advise is before starting the game, go and read the short story overview on http://www.projectelea.com/, otherwise you might end not knowing what is going with the world early on - something I would have expected to be briefly mentioned before the intro scene to be honest, just to give you better context.
The last time I bought an early access game it was Dreamfall: Chapter, and I really do not regret this, because much of the inspiring content was cut-off later. If you like classic sci-fi movies and literature, I definitely recommend to give Elea a try. Even that it has it's problems now you might miss an artistic fragment, which can enrich you experience in the final version of the game.
Finally, a different kind of sci-fi. This game is crazy. CRAZY!
The first hour is little confusing with all the jumps between "dimensions", but overall the story is quite intriguing. Hope for a little more answers in the second episode. I think the developers are clearly inspired by 2001 a space odyssey which is actually not a bad thing. How many episodes are planned for Elea?
The visuals are amazing and I am quite happy with the diversity of the locations. I didn't expect this from a game that cost me just a five buck. The music is very atmospheric and overall the audio design is superb. Voice acting is also done pretty well for the main characters. Elea's character in particular. However, some of the NPC's sound a little strange.
My main issues with the episode are connected to the pacing of the game. Elea is moving tooooooo slow. I understand her condition in the beginning, but a little more speed will help the overall flow of the game. And why I can't run in the later stages of the game?
In addition, I broke the mouse look completely and needed to restart the game from the last checkpoint.
Of course, I know this is Early Access thing at the moment, but I am hoping the developers will do something about the slow movement of Elea.
Overall though, the game is very promising and should I said different, compared to most of the first person adventures/walking simulators. Best of luck!
