great game , i love it
its not full of details like sim city but its not as hard as that too or realistic , a mix of future and some stuff
the look is great , the challenge is there , after 10 hours of playing a game u just start to actually play it , i mean the challenge begins and then u gonna make things work
Excellent, visually appealing city builder that's not overly stressful / complicated.
This game keeps getting better! Been a fan for a long time!
Interesting challenge concept - moderate game delivery experience. Cliff Empire is a neat city building experience. How long will that neatness last will depend on the player. Will recommend purchasing this game on sale, but very carefully depending on what you're looking for.
Cliff Empire's gameplay is pretty solid and straight forward for a city building game. Camera controls are simple, intuitive, and provide the player the best view possible to build. This is quite important to the game as the player will soon be able to build not only on flat land, but on cliff edges and walls. The game provides a small tutorial to provide the player with the basics of the game. The tutorial is actually useful and provides further details if the player requires. After the tutorial it seems the brunt of the game begins, which is essentially challenge after challenge. I've started a few new games and it seems the challenges are a little randomized, and even come with a small cut-scene to introduce the potential problem. Some challenges include selling a certain amount of material, surviving droughts, surviving no wind conditions (meaning no turbine power), and some neat and not-so-neat challenges. The game's difficulty can be altered before starting a map, and another interesting note, players can actually delay certain tutorials and build up their city to better prepare for the challenges.
Upon choosing a difficulty and entering the game the player has the opportunity to choose the map. Map sizes are slightly random, but have default layouts in which the player can adjust or choose accordingly depending on the land shape they want. Once in the game the player starts an empire by placing a storage building. Buildings come in different sizes: some squares, some small rectangles, some larger rectangles, and some small squares. Basic building options include power (solar, wind, nuclear), nutrition (food, water, nutritional supplements), housing, entertainment, utility buildings (such as airports, transport, and maintenance), and a few others to choose from as the player completes challenges to gain medals. The obvious challenge here is to provide for citizens while being efficient with the amount of space available to build on.
The visuals and graphics are pretty good for what the game sets out to achieve. It sort of follows a dull grayscale colour scheme, but adds little hints of colours to keep the boring completely out. Animations are more or less all there, minor ones such as watching the drones drop items off or pick them up is not completely visible. They do land, but beyond that nothing else. Wind and other effects are apparent in addition to minor animations from buildings (whether its lights or some sort of motion or movement). The user interface I felt was well done and provides the player with quick and easy to access information. The sounds and music are quite chill. The narrators voice is suitable to the game's atmosphere, but can get a little annoying repeating the same things over and over again, especially when situations or events occur back to back. The music is really nice and doesn't annoy as much as the sounds do. This domain was addressed, but nothing over the top and nothing really missing.
Overall, I will recommend this game but with a caution. The first caution is buying this on sale, personally the sticker price I don't think its worth it. Second caution is the limited gameplay loop; some players will find a challenge in how Cliff Empire sets up its game while others may find it monotonous. I enjoyed the game for the time I played. I most likely will not be coming back as a regular, but can see myself popping in once in a while... maybe. This is why I caution 🙂.

If you're at all interested in these types of colony sim games, get this one. Challenging but in a good way, and really great art direction makes you have quite a bit of creative freedom once you get passed the phase of the game where you're scraping by.
I always come back to this game at some point.
You want to enjoy your time where you smartly build your post-apocaliptic scifi city while you work at home? This is it, my friend, take your time. The atmosphere is stunning and the music is very relaxing.
But wait, you can also have a more challenging version of the game with waves of adversaries coming from everywhere, forcing you to carefully plan ahead how you want to defend your strategic locations without sacrificing production.
You might have to restart several times before you master the principles, but that is part of the fun. And contrary to other city builders, you unlock new territories by achieving certain targets, adding a whole new perspective to your game so it doesnt get boring in the long term.
Lately I've also been having loads of fun with the sandbox version, where I have been building the equivalent of an ecumenopolis like Star War's Corrusant.
Absolute rubbish. No manual. Nothing to tell you how to go about setting up a functioning city. The tutorial just tells you to build stuff with no explanation anywhere as to why you are building it, what it influences and how it links to other elements of the game. From a concept which is highly original and visually appealing, this is one of the most empty, awful gaming experiences I have ever had.
If the Developers even have a clue how to educate new players (which we all start off as) they clearly exhibit no inclination to do so, which, in my opinion, after receiving the money, is pretty despicable. As is becoming increasingly the norm nowadays this aspect of the “business” is laid squarely upon the shoulders of the players themselves to fathom it all out and to draw up their own guides, walkthroughs and solutions to problems.
As a player I do not wish to be hand-held, but there is zero starting help whatsoever. The only way you have a chance of figuring out how to play successfully is right from the "getgo" to fail, time after time after time again until you figure it out which, in my opinion, is just not good enough.
Having, in good faith, wasted my money I'm not prepared to waste any more of my time on what has proven to be a frustrating, wholly disheartening disappointment and I suggest no-one else does either. At least if you read this and still decide to take a chance, you will do so having been fairly warned.
great game i wish That they Make More Games like this one
A highly engaging city builder with a steep learning curve! There's a ton of satisfaction in experimenting with different strategies and exploring the vast array of buildings and technologies. Balancing everything on a Cliff is challenging but adds to the excitement. If you enjoy figuring things out and tweaking your city, this game is a fantastic choice!
POSITIVES:
+ variety of buildings, products and events
+ satisfying just to watch traffic, enjoying view of your cities
+ better to watch economics, wrong choices can slow down your growth
NEGATIVES:
- no manual, instructions, you had to find out how things work, to experiment
When you like resource/city management, this game is like no others, recommended :)
Nice little aesthetically pleasing futuristic city game from a dedicated dev that kept updating it throughout the years, great bang for your buck!
All this game has going for itself is style, there is no substance, just annoyances and contrived game mechanics. Not worth anyones time.
Also fuck this game and random events. Sudden earthquake? Lets hope that doesnt DESTROY EVERY BUILDING THAT GENERATES MONEY IN ONE GO! Want to rebuild those destroyed buildings? That will be 500$ per (regardless if it costs less) and that doesn't include the ORIGINAL COST!
Also
Want to grow food?
Want to extract water?
Want to mine uranium?
Want to mine matter (basic construction material)?
Want to use wind power?
Want to use solar power?
Better hope you selected the right starting location as the game tells you basically nothing at the start regarding this. One has to first research the technology to be able to select a good starting location AFTER HAVING SELECTED A STARTING LOCATION!
Yes, sure, you can start at all 3 location at the same time, but have fun micro-manage that as all 3 of them couts as independent economies, its like playing as 3 people at once. You will have to set up trade deals WITH YOURSELF. What kind of fucked up mechanics are that?
Don't worry, it gets worse as all of these trades, buildings and whatnot runs on (drumroll) cryprocurrency. (For some odd reason they decided to call money that, why?). Since all 3 cities have an independent pool of curreny one can't just boost or one-sidedly help a city, as the receiver has to always pay. Can't gift resources either. Combine that with that there is always a loss in value due to purchase prices alwats being like 50% more than sales prices makes inter-city trading tedious at best to balance and can outright bankrupt one of your cities if not careful. Amazing isn't it.
Another fucked up thing is that no resources are refunded when cancelling construction (it seems), and very few resources are returned (if you have the correct building for this) when demolishing buildings, so have fun with that.
This is a shortlived but enjoyable game from the past for me. Yet I keep seeing Lion's gate adding sh*t onto it. I have to say for the 12 bucks they are charging this is great and original even challanging sim.
What a great city builder from a dedicated developer. Love it.
Such a brilliant game.
There are constant updates bringing more and more features and it's been really cool to see the game evolve over the last few years.
Any problems that crop up are fixed promptly!
Please buy if you enjoy city building and management with a futuristic theme!
Not bad but still could use some refinement.
Despite the small development team, this game is surprisingly detailed: each building has positions to display ads as per the in-game "holograms" policy, and undercliff buildings have dedicated positions for each construction material that each undercliff drones will fly to to deliver them. The game is also very dynamic; the progression in each stage of the game feels so natural, you are simply thinking about how to adjust production to satisfy the current demands, and before you know it you have reached end game.
Love this game. It's relaxing in the beginning, then the complication level starts to go up and you can really expand. Highly recommended.
Buy it NOW you fools!!!
A different kind of building game. Like many others but with unique twists to keep it interesting. Still one or two bugs like no bulldozer function although I think the drones will clean up rubble if given enough time. Out of line building costs. 500 credits to rebuild something that cost 100. Funds do not seem to go down past 700 in the primary city. A bit cheaty. Still updates are still coming so I can wait till its finish before final judgement.
Very nice city building game. Enjoyed playing quite a few times. Visually very good. Could have been developed by a AAA dev team.
The tutorial tells you to build items - nothing else. No information how the economy works.
If you don't want disasters - too bad - because you can't unlock certain features in the game without surviving them.
Fail to complete a task - expect to get fined heavily. No reward for completion, just a fine for failure.
If you turn disasters off when you start, you can't turn them on without starting from scratch.
If you make a mistake, or a disaster destroys your city -sorry your save from earlier has been overwritten - start again.
Apart from this it seems pretty good - many different things to build, an economy to manage, space in which to build is constrained, making a decent challenge. There is tech to research which improves buildings & production etc.
it only looks decent. but after 5 years the UI isnt even half finished. too many informations are just missing. for example the description for a townsquare tells you it generates a stable passive income but doesnt tell any numbers. the construction drones often just hang around mid air or inside buildings instead of returning to a landing pad when every job is done. new settlers are standing idle on landing pads for days. list goes on.
overall feels like the game was abandoned mid development and pushed for release.
I've played through it and its an amazing city builder with survival elements for the price.
Interesting techs to research and locations to explore.
Starts slow but picks up pace when you're settled on your first cliff basically.
Some suggestions for the devs, we need more info!
The Ui is aesthetically fine, pretty basic actually, but it needs to have more info for the player.
Examples would be:
We need to see priorities without clicking on the building.
A shortcut to turn on more info for the buildings. Power consumption, does it need ressources? Sometimes you only notice when you click on it and the number is red.
The indicator for the energy sources mix is a really cool idea.
But i would like to have a number besides it to show me, how much i produce in total.
Not just percentage. Because, when i turn off buildings, i wanna see how many i need to turn off to not go into battery consumption.
Just some examples, im sure some more info overall would be nice.
All in all, i had a lot of fun playing through it and i can absolutely recommend it for anyone into these types of games.
This game deserves more recognition! It's simply beautiful, relaxing, offers the right amount of challenge that you can tackle from various different creative angles. A city builder like no other.
im perd haply, and this is a game that i have played
This game really is awesome. The updates keep on coming. You can tell a labor of love from a money grab.
very cool, quirky city builder. one of the most unique things is that you're managing three cities at once and have the option to either make all three self-sustaining, or to specialise each and have them support each other (although I wish having specialised cities was a little more balanced; you really need several bridges, and the time investment of having drones fill and empty the trains is very costly early-game). the cities are on different plateaus that you'll have to connect, and different plateaus have different stats that determine how effective different buildings are on them (one will have the best soil quality for agriculture, one will have the best matter, the general purpose building material, deposits, one the best uranium, and two will each be best for the two types of power production, one has the best underground water availability, and one or more will have lakes, which you can also get water from, as well as fish); what you produce on each plateau will be determined by this. the setting is also very unique, so you're not seeing buildings carried over from other city builders like you usually do (which usually are either medieval, modern, or space colonisation; this is closest to the third, but still totally unique). the gameplay loop is also interesting. you are always dealing with one of two types of 'events', which cycle back and forth; you'll have some type of challenge you need to survive, which could be a natural disaster, a weather event, or an enemy attack, then a couple days downtime, and then a production objective, which requires you to send a certain number of a certain good up to the orbital station in a limited amount of time, then another couple days of downtime. the challenge and the production target are both selected from a list, so you don't know what you'll be dealing with beforehand, and you're always having to balance expanding your cities with handling the current objective. if you get lucky, you'll already have everything you need for an event, and you can catch your breath and focus on building up your cities.
one possible criticism is that there are mechanics you will not understand or things you're not aware you'll be able to do later, and this makes it pretty much impossible to really plan things on a blind playthrough. you might have to start over (I had to start over once so far, but I was only an hour or two in); later on, you'll likely be tempted to start over again, but many times you'll realise a little further on that there's something you can unlock that solves the issue that made you want to restart. I can't wait to get to the endgame so that I know what all can be unlocked and what all the possible events are, at which point I'll probably start over so I can plan ahead, because it's very hard to plan ahead without knowing what challenges you could end up facing and what tools are hidden behind a future unlock. while I am presenting this as a criticism, it also makes the game a lot more tense, as you're always wondering if you're safe, even when it feels like everything is going great, so on the whole I don't know that I'd call this a negative for the game
one thing that I think definitely is a problem is that there are also a few buildings/systems that just aren't really explained, which forces you to try them out to see how they work, and load a save if you misunderstood. it'd be nice if there was an in-game encyclopedia or something that would have little entries for game elements with explanations, maybe with a quick video showing how the building/system works, that would unlock as the associated elements unlocked in the game.
I really, really like this game, and if you like the genre, I'm confident you probably will as well.
Great game.
An intriguing and challenging builder, wonderful backdrop and story, as a fan of city builders, I play this even more than Frostpunk
I found peace in this little simulation.
Simple and challenging the narrative is also very nice. I almost got lost in time playing the game on end.
It was only by chance that I discovered this gem of a game. I've got to say it absolutely blows my mind away. This would be a great game if it was made by a AAA outfit. To think that a single developer has made this, is nothing short of a miracle!
If you're looking for a city/colony builder which keeps you on your toes every step on the way and throws extra challenges in for good measure, this is the game you must play (but probably never heard much about before). It's a constant balancing act between growing your three cities, cash flow and most importantly space constraints. Unlike other city builder, you're not constantly extending, building more and more.... no! You have to research to be able to squeeze ever more people and industries into the limited area. And just when you thought you found the right balance, something unexpected happens (disasters, events which require you to change your industry output, among other things). As you progress through the game, there'll also be some rather very impactful changes thrown at you, which forces you to constantly evolve and adapt. I'm trying not to spoil anything here... Level 20 (or 20 honour points gained) will turn your economy on its head. But it can free up a lot of space as well, so the evolution of your cliffs continues... :)
I don't get comments about things progressing too slowly later on. That depends very much on how you set yourself up.
This isn't a city builder where you can focus on a small area, let it run independently forever and move on to the next. No. Everything changes, all the time, and it has to, or else you will find yourself in a position that you might consider starting over. It's amazing how well balanced the different aspects of this game actually are.
On a technical note, it runs flawlessly. Haven't had a single crash so far (in 40 hrs), performance is great (100+ fps in late game on 2k screen), and it looks fantastic and as futuristic as the game's premise would have you expect.
It's also great to see that it is still being updated!
Or in other, much fewer words: An absolute masterpiece!
Such a fun and interesting city builder. Aesthetics aren't crazy, but very nice and clean. Don't need a PhD to get a grasp on supply chains or building, but definitely rewards you for planning ahead. The "plot/story" is also engaging and makes you want to achieve your objectives/tasks when you have them(some required, some bonuses gained, some tech unlocked).
If you enjoy city builders, specially at the price point of this one, you can't really go wrong with Cliff Empire.
Great game with tons of replayability!
This is not your average city builder. The game offers a fresh and exciting challenge with its unique post-apocalyptic setting, where you manage the development of multiple cities while trading with an orbital station. The dynamic climate and economic management keep you on your toes, and every playthrough feels different thanks to randomly generated levels.
The variety of game modes, including sandbox and tower defense, adds depth and makes the game highly replayable. Plus, the mix of ecological and harmful power choices, combined with the city-building strategy, offers a fun challenge every time. Whether you're optimizing your economy or navigating tricky quests, it's worth every dollar spent. If you’re into city builders but want something that pushes the genre in a new direction, this game delivers!
Thanks chatGPT for helping me make this review :D :P
Nice city builder!
This city builder hits all the marks for me. It is really well balanced with trade and you just want to keep coming back and challenging yourself to do even better again next time. You can change so many settings in it if you choose to (not that you need to) and things like that just demonstrate how much passion went into making this game. I would be straight onto a sequel!
It's such a bloody good game. The setting is grim, and it starts off hard. Eventually it expands to a more hopeful setting as you do better and better.
One of the absolute best.
Really cool city builder. I love the aesthetics and the challenge that comes from building your city on such a limited footprint. Compared to other survival games it has a very nice balance on the number of resources - enough to make it challenging to satisfy them all with the limited footprint without having so many it gets hard to track of, and feels challenging enough to be interesting without (usually) being unfair. The game also does a really good job of opening up new challenges as you get comfortable with each stage, which keeps things interesting for quite a while. My only real gripe is that progressing to the next checkpoint begins to take a really long time towards the end, but that feels like a small thing on an otherwise really well put together game.
As a side note, I love the design choice on how under-cliff buildings are put together. You have a dedicated engineering building that makes a slew of different parts based on what's currently needed for current builds - it picks automatically based on the buildings in the queue. You then have a special giant cargo drone carry that to the structure, which visually has each piece added as it's brought. It's a great compromise that makes it feel like a realistic large project construction without giving the player something to micromanage, and it's really cool seeing your mega structures slowly built up over time (even if they are often a very time consuming resource sink).
