Open World
Spring City Tales is set in The Prosperous Freehold: an area consisting of three distinct biomes. Spring City and the Marshland, the deserts of Blackroot, and the frozen wastes of Leskova. From the game's outset you can set off along your own path, exploring the world as you see fit.
Collectable Monsters
In a shadow-world parallel to The Freehold, live the Void-Monsters. These creatures can be dangerous but are kept in check by both the Rune Temples and monster trainers. As a monster trainer you can collect runes to summon these monsters from beyond the void, train them up, and get them to fight for you! There are nearly a hundred known monsters with more being discovered every day!
Dynamic Economy
In The Freehold there are two financial powers. The Bank and The Purchasing Guild. The Bank loans money to many of the families that live their while The Purchasing Guild buys locally crafted items to export. Helping Kat, paying off loans, and supporting causes will improve the local economy, which in turn increases the payout for selling items to the Purchasing Guild. However it will also increase interest rates, making both your loans, and other Kats harder to pay off. Theft, violence, and general skuldugery will weaken the local economy, having the opposite effect!
Thievery
Once the Kat have gone to bed, out come the thieves! By crafting thief tools you can choose to break into any house, warehouse, or shop and steal from them. Sometimes this may be for a quest or perhaps you are just looking for some extra gold. So long as you stay quiet you can make a lot of extra gold, but should you make too much noise the guards will come and you could end up spending your valuable time in prison!
Crafting
There are thirteen unique crafting skills each with their own levelling system. Craft yogurts, cheeses, armours, bows, axes, weapon components, tonics, potions, thief tools, fairy eggs, magical gems, glass items, oils, and more! Grow crops and forage monsters for ingredients. Become an expert in a single field and make thousands of gold!
Questing
As the child of famous monster trainers your return has excited many people. Each morning you will get a visit from the postman bringing quests of all sorts: everything from the mundane worries of local Kat, monster hunts, thievery requests, begging letters, and quests so fantastical they will take you into strange and magical realms. There is also the matter of finding you parents' killer and avenging their death! Of course, all quests are non compulsory!

seams fun but with 7 games and not 1 of them valued over $1.50 well, it says a lot about the developer and their skills.
This game has a lot of issues. It lacks polish. There are quite a few bugs, some preventing you from finishing quests, some places you'll get stuck, some areas/screens never get dark at night, some monsters are unobtainable... Too many chests to lockpick, the minigame gets old after a few dozen times. The rate of random encounters is high, you fight between 1 and 5 enemies and the chance of fleeing feels like 33%, resulting in sometimes having to try 4-5 times before succeeding and having to wait for all the ennemy attacks in between. It gets really annoying after 10-20h. Leveling up the monsters is long and grindy, crafting is nice but has a % chance to suceed (as low as 5%) which is just a waste of time in the end because you'll be reloading until it works anyway. I found a good chunk of the monsters to be ugly and the combat lacking depth and sufficient different animations. The game has a prominent lack of quality of life and visibility of information. There is no minimap and the area maps are items within a very long list of possessions without shortcuts, the inventory is a mess. No bestiary. You don't see enemy life bars nor their type, nor if damage is efficient... I disliked that some areas were only accessible as part of the main story. It is fine overall but i was very underwhelmed when i realized that by focusing on repaying my debt not to have it get out of control and to be able to take my time playing i effectively just skipped most of the adventure/plot because you get to face the end boss immediately. That didn't work out too well anyway my team was ~lvl 18 and he is ~38 so i had to postpone the encounter through reloading and leaving what i owed at a few hundred.
I started with the negatives because that's what stood out more towards the end, i wasn't having much fun for the last 10h due to the repetitiveness and the tedium. However i did enjoy the first 25 and this game has some qualities too. I enjoyed that the farming aspect is really not central and very accessible. Even though there is a day and night cycle here you don't have to sleep and plants grow in minutes. The world map is nice, feels alive and is cleverly designed. People walk around during the day and not at night (streets/roads are empty), your actions impact the economy of the world (prices/interest rate). I really liked that houses are numbered and the location of quest givers is written in the briefing. It was refreshing to get mail every day with random requests for help from villagers, participating in giving a sense of community. I liked the monster summoning system which is based on finding runes and not capture. Levels even though impactful were not as important as it seemed at first since i managed to defeat arena opponents at double of mine. I didn't feel like i was in a rush to do stuff and racing against the clock except in the beginning where you try to keep the debt from growing exponentially and have very limited means of income.
The main thing tipping the balance to the positive for me is that this game is 5€. At 15 i wouldn't have recommended it but this is totally reasonable and fine value.
Really enjoying the game and like the concept, there is a few bugs the need tidying as the game will freeze every now and then so save often.
I played for 7 hours and this is a really detailed RPG maker game with lots of quests and lots of mechanics. The biggest and fatal flaw for me is that after playing for 7 hours I seem to be experiencing a game breaking bug. When I try and reload the next fight I am in freezes and I can not continue the game.
Again this game took a lot of work to make and I respect that but if I can't play it that's a deal breaker.
I would love the opinion of no time limits for quests less random encounters with monsters or at least make them escapable more often so that I could enjoy the story line and complete quests.. With some bug fixes and a more relaxing option this would be an amazing game but as it stands I can't recommend it.
This game is like a cross between stardew valley and pokemon with a bunch of crafting mixed in.
I love the debt system to the bank and the changing town prosperity depending on if you help people or steal from them.
This game may have a bit of a learning curve because it is not always obvious where you're supposed to get items or where you're supposed to craft. Good rule of thumb is to press enter when you're by anything that shines or looks like you could potentially craft there. Not all crafting places sparkle.
There are a few bugs here or there, as well as some design features that make the game a bit frustrating, but overall it is a fantastic game with a lot of thought put into it.
Its super glitchy. I can't finish some quests even though it says to go collect my reward. I really liked this game but not being able to progress is really really annoying. I don't recommend this game at all.
A lot of really great ideas in this one. I love the way the economy responds to your heroism/villainy and I'm a fan of the mix between JRPG and Harvest Moon style play.
The mechanics leave a bit to be desired. Its very rough and unpolished in regards to movements, numerous typos and QoL aspects (Why can't the quest tracker tell you what house number the quest is turned in at, instead of needing to open the quest log to check?)
For the price its a bargain.
Normally I just ignore these types of games as they aren't usually made with quality in mind. Though this game seemed to have been different. The multiple class selections, a new and interesting story concept, combined with complex battle mechanics. For the price...I thought I could take the risk. In some ways I am glad I did. The game itself is very different than anything I have played before, with a lot of various activities and a deep crafting system. The real problem is that while the game has tutorials for some things, it doesn't directly help you with other features. For example, I needed to craft lockpicks as a Thief class, but I had no way of knowing where the crafting bench was. Because different things must be crafted at different crafting furnishings(IE: Cheese at an Oven, Potions at an alchemy table, glassworks at a foundry, etc). I found it by accident while wandering around. It's located in the Thief's Den, and the game doesn't tell you this. However, it does railroad you to that location eventually if you immediately do the main story quests. Also, I needed milk for a quest that I could not decline, yes there are some quests you are given each day that you can't refuse. This quest had a time limit for completion, I had to first figure out how to get goats for the milk. Which, had I immediately went and did the uncle quest I was given at the start of the game, I would have been given some low quality goats. Instead I spent a ton of gold on a goat vendor that happened to be around on that day (and only that day for some reason). I personally feel it should have been more clear at the beginning that I should have done these steps first before exploring. These quests do introduce some very basic and necessary aspects of the game that a new player shouldn't miss before progressing.
I myself experienced two bugs with two quests. One where the NPC never showed up where they were supposed to (in a tent), and the other where the quest log would not start, but would keep attempting to and kept giving me runetickets. Minor bugs that aren't game breaking but there should be an expectation of the possibility for these.
The map system was confusing at first, and didn't really help me navigate the game very well. Though once I got used to how it was structured, it made sense after.
The battle system is pretty in-depth in terms of monster variety. Battles were fun at first, but sometimes felt tedious when I was just trying to get to different places. You can try to escape from battles with the "esc" key to make it go faster, but doesn't always work.
Also, there is no way to load a saved game in the beginning. You have to completely exit the game and restart it.
Many of the problems I experienced with the game were pretty minor, and didn't really detract from my overall experience. I mean, for the price I felt it was worth it. Which is more than I could say for most of the RPGmaker games I've seen.
I picked this up on sale for $1.70, because the plot seemed intriguing and the price was low enough that it seemed worth the risk. Unfortunately, I ended up with a game so frustrating to try to operate that I gave up after 25 minutes. For some reason, the game is very, very laggy on my Linux desktop, and the controls are clunky as all get-out. Minor things like trying to scroll through my quest log to remind myself what I was supposed to do were extraordinarily difficult. Speech bubbles always appeared with no text in them, and I'd have to click a second time to see any words. Trying to pick up items had the feel of trying to get a stuffed toy out of a coin-operated claw machine.
Even aside from the clunkiness, I found the game itself rather confusing, too. Explanations did pop up as I had my character try to interact with things, but I must've completely missed something with the combat, because I could not manage to get through a single battle without my monster getting killed off. On the other hand, I'd managed to trigger so many explanation dialogs about crafting that it overwhelmed me.
There seems to be a lot of stuff in this game that I didn't really get to, so I wouldn't say that it's totally without merit. Clearly a lot of work went into the game, However, the severe performance issues made me unwilling to get past that early-game "argh I don't know where to go or how to do anything" hurdle. It also concerns me that after eight updates in the first month after release, this game has seen no updates (or even communication) since April… this suggests that the developers have already walked away. Maybe they'll be back, I don't know, but as it is I cannot recommend this game, even for $1.70.
Okay, I have to say this is one of the most fun games I've played for 5 dollars EVER.
I literally have 9 hours and some change on it, all from today.
I couldn't put it down!
As others mentioned it's like Stardew Valley and Pokemon.
You have to find these runes to summon eggs which turn into monsters you can put in your party, You start out able to have two others and your hero. Then you get up to three others to make yourself a four person party.
I feel like I've hardly scratched the surface of this game and I've been playing it for 9 hours.
I do wish they had all the different crafting areas in your farm, because you can find a ring to teleport you back there from anywhere and then you have to run across town to find an alchemist. But that's a small complaint really.
If you like Stardew Valley and old school RPG type games where you pick attack, magic, items or defend, similiar to old school Final Fantasy, this is a bargain!
This is a game where you collect monsters and make them fight other monsters. Also, this is a game about an imorral bank run by an evil family, who are trying to financially enslave the entire world. In other words, this is a game where you fight Bank of America. You do this by stealing their property with the ultimate goal, I hope, of killing the people who own the bank. I never got that far, but they seem like the antagonists and we just really need more games about taking down evil banks.
And that's awesome. What's not awesome is the lack of polish. I get the feeling that this is the masterwork of a talented developer who spent years and years on the game, then released it without having literally anybody else test it. It's full of nonsense decisions, like a lottery determining if you get any reward from quests, the only way of loading a game is to QUIT the game and restart it, and so on. The sad part is that these would be really easy to fix, and just about everybody can agree they need fixing. And the fixes just never happened.
One really bad feature just drags the other aspects of this game down, inescapably. Enemies scale with your level, removing all benefit in levelling up. In fact, not only does it not help you, it makes it HARDER to level up monsters who you haven't used. You may recognize this from other games, where this mechanism is usually cited as being the worst idea in the entire game. Two examples that come to mind immediately are Final Fantasy 8, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. And at least Oblivion didn't just increase their stats by a percentage, they actually carried cooler loot. So all those normally tasty experience points just screw you over - I think some bosses don't scale but they're never alone, so you'll end up fighting a set of enemies who are level 23, 19, 22, and 10. That one guy being at level ten is not helpful.
With the cool bank power system and void monsters of various kinds, this game really could have been something. And with maybe two or three people playtesting they would have caught onto this nonsense and realized it for the mistake it was. But now the dev has probably abandoned the game. The dev obviously put so much effort into the game that it feels brutally harsh to say this, but the game is just kind of a mess. As far as development time it is 95% complete but boy those last 5% are a doozy. Avoid this even on sale, it isn't worth the time it takes to get into it.
In all honesty- have no clue if I bought the game or got it for free. Either way this game IS WORTH A PLAY! 5 hours in and I was hooked after 30 min. Enjoying the RTS against other monsters. You are able to raise the difficulty of the game yourself up to 145% I believe is the hightest I saw?! Also just the character game play a reminder of the old school FF. I'm enjoying the game - default level of difficulty is at 90% (found the level stuff after ward) The story is cool, you have the option of choosing to begin with 6 different monster trainers; each with their own strengths- the one I choose makes cheese really well and had studied this apparently while she was away from her parents. There is also a level of strategy; you have chests to break open as a thief, houses to break into (began reminding me of Skyrim in a sense with this) The music is amazing! Well fit to the game, the changes in pitch and tone are sooting and don't get in the way of concentration or become annoying. Usually I turn off the music in games but this one was left on and will stay on. Different types of stories and lots of quests and errands to run in order to help raise money to pay off your parents debt to the farm you inhereited - as side quests you're also helping your neighbors in other cities and such to help pay off their debt as well.
Random run ins with monsters you have to defeat; you do have your own pet to help you out and you are able to gain more pets to help you so long as you have the runes to summon them. They are slightly randomized in a way for ex: i'm a level 1 but while attempting to run a few errands I run into a Level 4 - I'm screwed. However you always return home; there is no death it's a respawn just in your own bed.
I don't have many cons about this game in fact there is truly only one - I love the fact that you have the map with you at all times once after you have found it. However, would be wonderful if on the map it showed where you are as a different color pin. I haven't tried the other difficulty settings as of yet; but do wonder if on EZ mode will your pin show up on the map as a point the you can then use to find your direction? Either way this is such a small concern compared to the game itself. Well done! Congratulations!
The idea behind this game is great but the product should never have been released as is. It's far too buggy, with serious lag issues and freezing up of text boxes. Also, the starting difficulty is far too high and much information crucial to completing quests is left out or stated in an extremely general and vague way. I suggest that the developers withdraw this game for now, iron out the glitches, tone down the starting difficulty level, and provide clearer instructions. Then I'd be happy to reconsider it. As it stands now, I cannot recommend Void Monsters.
If you want to make cheese, you can spend the game making cheese to sell and save your farm. Void Monsters: Spring City Tales seems to have a little bit of every activity you might want to do.
A serious delight to play, if you don't mind a few bits being rough around the edges. It feels like a nice mix of farming, questing, and monster combat with a nice mystery to solve throughout.
I'm honestly really impressed with the sheer scale of it as well. It absolutely feels like you're running around a living city.
This game is cute, but I personally found it kind of tedious to play.
Pros
+Many things to do and many ways to play.
+Im not into farming games but there is plenty of farming to do for players who want to grow flowers
+Its a surpisingly big game despite the price. This was a pleasant surpise for me.
Cons
-The controls are stiff and your character will get stuck against things if you walk into them wrong.
-No matter how strong you get enemies sort of level with you so that you never really get to feel powerful.
-It also doesnt explain very well how skills work. I tried to cast spell shield but it only lets me target my opponents. Why would I target my opponents?
I will not refund because I may want to comeback to this later in the future but for now, I have to say the games little bugs and such just make me feel like doing something else.
This is a little belter of a game, look past the visuals and you have a Stardew Valley crossed with Pokemon, and at the price it is a bargain, love it
Imagine Nino Kuni meets Stardew Valley. This game is a true single-player RPG and has a lot of subtle depth to it.
I am nowhere near beating the game, but the story does get good an hour or two in. There are a lot of subsystems (various types of crafting). Acquiring new void monsters is a bit tricky as a new player, but once you catch on you'll quickly find a party configuration that works for you.
Tips for newcomers:
1. Although it's very open world, treat the first day of gameplay as if it were linear. Go do the starter quests ASAP. It helps.
2. Explore the caves, go through portals, visit both the Spring City and Blackroot Rune Temples. You want a party size of four, it makes leveling much easier.
3. If you can mod Group Slap onto a piece of gear early game, do so. It makes large groups of enemies manageable.
4. Sand Leaf. You want Sand Leaf. When you visit the Den, you can use it to make lockpicks, which is necessary for many thievery/bulgulary missions early game. Also, stealing from the bank is fun.
5. Don't be shy about using recovery points. They respawn at 6 AM every day.
Gameplay: 9/10 -- My only complaint is an apparent glitch: There are a few chests that I, inexplicably, cannot open. Either they don't do anything when I approach them, or they insist I need a lockpick (when I have 10 of the correct type in my inventory).
Graphics: 10/10 -- It looks and feels like an RPG Maker game, but I like that aesthetic. Your mileage may vary.
Music/SFX: 9/10 -- There isn't a lot of variety, but what's present definitely fits the mood for the story.
Storyline: ?/10 -- I'll update this when I get further along in the story. It starts out pretty basic ("get revenge for your dead parents") but you can navigate this premise. Without spoiling much, you get some choice in how you go about solving problems based on the quests you've completed, so the main quest isn't strictly linear.
Overall: 9/10 (tentatively) -- If you like single-player 2D RPGs, this is the game you've been waiting to play.
Been playing this game since last night and it seems quite fun.(aprox 6hours) Sort of a stardew valley meets pokemon with a final fantasy combat system.
Everything seems to work well. Havent gotten too far into the story (been mostly exploring and building up my character since I have yet to find the best ways to make money and pay off the bank).
Does have a couple of minor bugs and has one performace issue that could really do with being resolved (mainly when there are too many people on the map it starts to lag -especially when the post man is on the screen.
Would like to see the "e" button accepted as the interact button for those of us using "wasd" style of moving.
Also really like to be able to switch places with the NPC's or make it so there are fewer single lane walkways on the map so we can get around them quickly.
Also would like the option to turn off screen jerking around during combat- (or maybe just tune it down a bit)
ENDING
-------
The thing about this game is that it has a lot of really interesting stuff in it (crafting/combat/monster training) and I definately wanted to play a monster training game on PC- and there really arnt that many right now.
Its well worth the price tag. Get it if your bored or cant decide on anything - you wont regret it.
Man the time just flies by when I'm playing this game! For the price, I never expected how great of a game this would be. Yeah there's a bug every now and again, but nothing major that I've seen! There's so much story and so many things to keep you busy. Not just fighting different mobs and doing bounty quests, there's farming, crafting, raising goats, and stealing to name a few! You unlock new monsters by finding a certain combination of different runestones, so I find myself getting excited when I find the last rune I need to unlock a new buddy!
Short answer: if you like the old skool Final Fantasy fighting with some crafting added in, spend the 5 bucks and you won't be disappointed :)
It's charming! Lots of nifty mechanics and bright graphics. I use RPG maker so I recognize some of the hallmarks and this clearly took a lot of work to make new systems, animations, and a very expansive world! Clearly a labor of love and I like the old-school J-rpg styel meets new-style crafting system.
Just a little advice: when you download the game on Steam you'll be presented with TWO options to start Void Monsters for some reason. If you select the top option the game will not run (missing executible) but the bottom option works fine!
