TLDR: Fun to play. Interesting game. Ruined by disgusting undertones and explicit sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and paedophilia. Cannot recommend as the insinuations, lack of education and general hatred toward some groups of people needs eradicating from further minds.
I read all of the text. Not only does the game unapologetically retain deeply sexist, misogynistic, and homophobic themes, but it alludes to paedophilia as basically an innocent, non-criminal act if used purely for 'personal purposes'. Such sentiments in a 2018 game? Naturally made by men with solely men in mind. As a woman, to play a game in which a woman is depicted from the waist down, oversized to the point of gigantic size, laid asunder on a street corner, being sexually 'teased' (in fact assaulted as no consent was even basally implied) by an obscene phallic candle which rubs itself sluggishly along her (outer) clitoris until a wet drop sploshes down, it's just disgusting. And to top it off, these same men are confounded by women. What do they want? How to get their respect and attraction? How about not depicting them as objects for your pleasure, and then judging them by your subjective, uneducated sexist standards?
First of all, the nudity and sexual content can't be overstated and is significant, especially for a mainstream American audience. There are two instances of topless women as well as one section where the main character is outside a giant clitoris and conversing with a pubic louse; this section also involves a phallic object interacting with the clitoris, causing there to be dripping moisture. The references to sexual content are also not minor and include graphic descriptions of a BDSM scenario involving scat and force-feeding detergent to a tied-up "slave."
It's difficult for me to recommend this title just because I know so many people for whom this would be a deal-breaker, and I personally would have liked this game a lot better if it had been toned down a little and some of the most egregious and - to my mind - unnecessary elements had been removed. However, this is also a genuinely interesting game with well-designed puzzles (with the one exception of the sports quiz that other reviews have referred to). I didn't like the protagonist, but his thought processes were intriguing and I found the game and its world engaging. When the game finds a good balance with its dark subject matter and its stories I think it is affecting, and I feel like I'll be thinking about this game (as a flawed but interesting piece) into the future.
I also think that more developers should create games like this; there is a lot of space for games to reflect personal journeys, and I liked the structure of seeing the character develop and flounder and try to defend himself and his ideas through the years as he goes through different experiences.
Not a game for everyone, but I enjoyed the 3.5 hours I spent.
I may have high standards, but I want my pretentious, disturbing games about sensitive subjects to say something worthwhile or at least be good. Otherwise it's just a pointless experiment in self-flagellation.
Some of the bad dialogue might be due to translation, but not adding any voiceovers isn't really helping the game in this case. If anything, I just phase out between lines of The Old Man being extremely homophobic to this 12-year-old bisexual kid, and him coming up with this insane plan to take a photo of his bully while he's masturbating. What is the game trying to say with all of this? I have no fucking clue. But it sure as hell isn't stimulating any meaningful conversations in my brain.
I haven't refunded a game on Steam before, but there's a first time for everything I guess. I have only played 35 minutes of it so far, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but it doesn't seem to be worth what I spent on it on a sale (8,39€), let alone its full price.
That all being said, part of me feels almost bad about being this hard on the game, because it's completely possible that it's coming from a very personal, sincere place from the developers' part... But this isn't a review for the developers. It's for the customers. And I just don't think that you should buy this game based on what I've seen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
awesome
Literally one of my favourite games, the most beautiful and real storyline I've ever seen, it's grotesque and gorgeous all at once, plus the soundtrack is GORGEOUS
This is in my opinion a really good game, if you prefer to focus more on the story than the gameplay. I remember playing this game on mobile when i was a bit younger and giving up because i thought it was pretty boring, but now that I play again I can take a step back and admire what the story is about and the message it gives. I recommend to anyone with a bit of free time and patience!
french color blind gay boy. thats it
You start this game as a young kid who initially commit rather minor crimes, but who soon becomes an obnoxious, disgraceful adult. Initially, you steal minor things, and lie to adults. Then you steal evidence from a crime scene, aiding a paedophile in going free, only to give the material to a child-molesting priest SOLELY because you want a photocopy card. You photograph your underage classmate doing sexual activities and spread photos around the school.
Later, you get obsessed with a woman, and attempt to manipulate her into 'fixing' you. You get one of your coworkers fired by setting them up. You (mildly) poison an innocent person in order to manipulate another coworker.
Be warned, there's a highly sexualised chapter where you have to do 'stuff' to a giant set of lady parts. A bit surreal, but I'm a grown adult. It might not be suitable for younger players.
A later chapter and you're defending a woman who loves her dog *too* much (if you get my drift) and also a paedophile friend of yours because child porn 'doesn't hurt anyone' if 'it's for personal consumption'. WHAT!!!!!???!?!??? What sort of sick people believe this stuff???
The chapter after that I got stuck because you have to grab something out of your inventory and use it on screen, and you are only given about 2-3 seconds to do it. It's not possible to do that on my laptop trackpad, so I couldn't even progress if I wanted to. I can't hit the top right inventory icon, then move down to the inventory at the bottom, then move to the upper centre of the screen, all in the time allowed.
In my view, forget this game, go for something like Projectorface if you like this black and white aesthetic. I hope your obnoxious character gets hit by a truck or something at the end of this, because I can't possibly empathise with such a ****head
Pretentious as hell and somewhat disturbing. It deals with some very taboo themes for a video game and some of the stuff you do in this is pretty bad for what it is.
Still, I "enjoyed" it. I like pretentious taboo nonsense so this was a decent experience. Without a walkthrough I would never have figured out some of the puzzles, but that's because i'm not too familiar with this style of point & click game.
It's good that this game exists, I want more games to go in these kinds of disturbing directions and this is a decent start.
Anyways, buy it on sale and go in blind but use a walkthrough, you can get through it in about 3 hours and the guide on the community hub does a decent job of not spoiling what you're doing.
The trailer for the game doesn't even grasps the surface of what this game is, the description says that Desirè experiences lots of different emotions... well, if it means jumping around topics like sex, bestiality, BDSM, pedophilia, religion, schizophrenia and many others, not even trying to analyze them or give you a message reagarding their reality, then I guess it is right.. you experience lots of "emotions".
The artwork, the music, the atmosphere... all good, but not when it comes to going accord with the story, which offers no moral, no perspective, not even a nihilistic approach to reality... it just serves it raw, colorless (i guess they got that spot on at least then), depressive...
I do not recommend the game unless you wanna experience first hand an idea that had lots of potential but was not exploided properly and gives you no new perspective, no reflection nor ejoyement whatsoever.
Desire is a pretty awful game; it tries so hard to be deep and philosophical only to come off pretentious and kind of creepy, so what’s the story.
Désiré a young boy born colorblind goes through life trying to find happiness and away to see color and see the beauty of the world.
It’s now time for the likes, well I liked the idea of the game following the life of a young colorblind boy going through life, and the problems he has with being colorblind. The music was good and I loved the opening animation it reminded me of classic newgrounds videos.
It’s now time for the bad. The story itself sucks and feels disjointed, at first it seems like it’s going to be a heartfelt and beautiful story about a young boy struggling with being colorblind and finding his place in the world and finding happiness.
But no it’s not, the story jumps around with so many ideas, themes and trying to be deep and philosophical that it forgets its own story sometimes. Like I thought this story was about a boy struggling with colorblindness, not him braking into an old man’s home and assaulting him.
And on that, Désiré himself is really an awful asshole who does whatever he wants, whatever it’s stealing or framing and getting a guy fired, to even poisoning a guy. And all the themes the game brings up like Sexuality and gender identity to Religion to struggling with Physical disabilities and so much more, they are all barely touched on.
The game all so as no sound effects, it’s only the music witch can get tiring. And lastly the game’s ending sucked and just felt anticlimactic. Then there is the price for the game witch is way too high for this crap of a game.
But what’s even worse is this game could have been good, if they stuck to the story of a young boy struggling with being colorblind, to going more in deep with some of its themes, to having a likeable main character.
So with said don’t get this game, the story sucks, Désiré himself is really an awful asshole and the game comes off as pretentious and not knowing what it’s trying to say. So again don’t get this game.
Absolutely beautiful and stunning and I was hooked from beginning to end
TRASH
I really wanted to like this game. I love things that are story driven and point and click but have to agree with the other critiques. My feedback includes spoilers.
The story itself falls flat, I felt disconnected from the characters and the story was just overall not compelling. The characterization wasn't the best either, there was not much personality in each character's dialogue. Desire as a child speaks the same as he does when he is aged.
The game open and ends with a voice narration and while not exactly gameplay related, it was quite disappointing to find out that these were the only two instances of voice over narration. The music starts off really nice and somber but gets redundant really quickly. There are no sound effects when words appear or when you click on things so it doesn't feel as satisfying.
At times there are quiz portions that seem really unfair, especially the one regarding feminism. There is no way to get this information unless you go through trial and error, which for the gaining trust portion, had about 5 hurdles if not more. Get one wrong and you would have to start over again. It would have been much better game design if the answers to the soccer quiz or feminism history was given somewhere in the game.
pleasantly morbid
negative revews are misleading
Not a game for the faint of heart but a true journey for those who can see the true beauty behind it. It has several life defining messages its beautiful in a disgusting way. This game is not for everyone, it can introduce some extremly mature concepts but its worth it.
It's ok - difficult but hard to stomach for people who don't really like sex. Kind of stereotypical and overly philosophical.
I felt like I wasn't warned well. It's an okay game.
Story, art style, music = thumb up!
