Jetpack Joyride but better

Had a demo disc as a kid. The controls are as abysmal as I remember. Just how I like it. Who else thought this game was called Rage for all these years? xD No wonder I couldn't find it.

A great game from my childhood, one of the fist PC games I ever owned. Really cool late 90s/early 2000s futuristic vibe. Fun top down alien shooter, with a really cool theme, and early 2000s graphics. Love that intro video. Brings back a lot of memories ha.

If you dont like the tank controls, someone posted a guide on how to play the game in third person mode, which is actually pretty dang fun. And if you are having trouble getting it to run on Win 10, you have to MANUALLY allow the game through Windows Defender. After that, the game ran perfectly, just run setup first. Even detected my graphics card, and ran at a native 1080 resolution. Thats pretty dang good for a game from 99..

It's a great game, but the movement is borked and too inaccurate with the tanky controls and the topdown perspective. One of the few games that would need to be remade but with better functioning controls. The various different mines and instantly killing laser fences can get on nerves, but it's still great fun to blast through the levels with all the flashing explosions.

If you're trying this then do yourself a favor and use the cheat to change the camera angle. First turn on numpad; type "bod", press minus on numpad, type "bucketofchicken", finally press minus again. Do this in a quick succession and then load a game after being shot at face. Thanks to whoever mentioned this on the game's forums.

imagine its 1999 and you ve created a realy great third person shooter, and then some Idiot comes up with the idea "hey lets make it a shitty top down shooter with super awfull controls" this is what the game actualy is But then you enter ONE damn cheatcode and the whole shitgame turns into an awsome great shooter with good Controls. even the Playstation has that cheat! the Saturn also, so nobody can tell me it was to ressource hungry - i wonder who the dickhead was who decided to turn the game into a mess?

Ok so this is not a Port, this is simply the 1999 PC Version of the Game, it has better Textures, more details shadows etc, which is no wonder due the PS1 has only 2 MB of ram. technicly this game has Gamepad support, my xbox gamepad will be detected through dxinput, but when i try to play the game with gamepad the game laggs the input also etc, and top down mode with mouse is realy a pain in the ass.

to make the game from hell to heaven simply press minus on your keypad then enter "bod" and press minus again to enable cheats. Then do the same with the word "bucketofchicken", "zippy" turns godmode on which is handy to just learn the game , train etc.

im surprised how much Detail and stuff you can see on the screen, it looks like an unreal engine game from its time much lighting stuff is also there and also many destroyable objects, for a 99 Game it has a high standard, even for a game made by RAGE

i would bet my ass if i can invent a time machine go back to 1998, beat the shit out of the guy who made a top down out of it and force it to third person again, this game would be an instant platinum hit for the PS1

however first i saw that game 1999 on the DEMO1 DEMO Disk for the Playstation 1 - so this Pc Version here gives me many positive memories.

It's a very fun game once you configure your controls properly (I play it with a ps classic controller)

Feels like Contra or Shock Troopers mixed with Quake 2 or something.

I vaguely remember this game being on the Sega Dreamcast but never got around to playing until I scooped this on Steam for less than a dollar, one of the better cheap throwaway purchases I've made on here.

Missed this game so much and it is so nice to max out the graphics and revisit it again without a Dreamcast emulator or tracking down all the gear with minimal wear. I highly recommend this game. My brother game me this game when we were kids and I was hooked. Simple story like Soldier with Kurt Russell, but with amusing graphics, a pretty good soundtrack, and this isn't an easy game. You'll run out of lives on your first playing experience. It has a pretty good amount of levels, too. Disable the frame limits, allow Steam controller override, don't use bump-mapping, and use the highest graphics setting for the best gaming experience.

Got this on sale for a dollar.
The controls, when modified, are bearable. Not great, either. But tolerable.
Xbox 360 controller doesn't work for some reason, despite it saying it has controller support.
Very classic style fun game despite the jank.
Just your easy brain off "Haha shoot alien".
You could certainly do a lot worse for a dollar.

As someone who was an avid fan of the demo for this game on the PS1, the PC version was something I needed to get my hands on ASAP.

I'm glad I did! The game plays amazingly well, with no drops in frames or quality at all, even when everything is going absolutely nuts (running on an RTX 3060 and a Ryzen 5 3600). The gameplay is what you'd expect from a classic topdown shooter too; pure carnage and chaos with not a single thought being put into what you shoot at! Eye-candy galore too, with the enemies exploding upon death; a true feast for the eyes.

Of course, play with the knowledge that this is a 20+ year old game, you shouldn't expect the greatest of mechanics nor brain blasting visuals, but for it's time, this game knew how to deliver, and it delivered it EXTREMELY well.

Almost certainly worth the buy, especially if on sale. Must recommend to any classic shooter fan out there.

It is one of those games which was way too difficult for me as a kid. In those cases I am always curious how skilled I am in present times.

Turns out the game is still atrociously hard. I have to admit I used cheats in the last 3 levels.

For its price tag it is a good game. You get nice music, solid action, nice sci fi / 80s vibes and some interesting weapons and bosses.
The levels are short and you can play this game easily in short bursts.

What strikes out as annoying and negative is the clunky control sheme and sometimes very tough time limitations.

Also if you have problems with the use of cheats the difficulty might be a problem. I played on the easiest setting and the game gives you 8 "continues" in proper arcade style. The last 3 levels can use up 4 of them alone. The controls make it even harder.

i dont think i ever get any more action in any other game this game is insane explotions and enemies everywhere i love it

Expendable is a very difficult third person shooting game.


Pros:
+Excellent 3D animation. It explains what are "expendable soldiers" and their final fate.

+Very good 3D scene design. From earth colony to alien planet, you will explore a lot of different places.

+You can use so many unique weapons and equipment.

+You will fight against various alien units. Most of them are very dangerous.

+There are a lot of secrets hidden in the game.

+Some enemy units will do funny things if you find a special secret. Such as throw snowballs or dancing under spotlights.


Cons:
-The display speed of mission objectives is too fast in some levels.

-Game is extremely hard. Even if you selected the easy mode.

-You may often change the wrong weapon by accident.

-There has a serious bug in the final area of level 7: Enemy will stop teleporting soldiers if there only left one teleporter. But player must kill these soldiers to pick up guided weapon! So if you run out of its ammo, then you can't destroy the last teleporter. It means that you have to replay the whole level!

Great game, bought it out of nostalgia to remember the times and feelings when I didn't want to die in my sleep.

A fun classic arcade game, I had this as a kid and maybe now i'll finally complete it xD

As i don't have nostalgia for Expendable, i can't recommend it even being cheap:

-The game is too dark and doesn't fit the screen properly, despite the resolution and other video settings;
-The framerate is too low;
-The control style is terrible, the infamous "tank control".

I have a good pc, with Ryzen 5 3600 and Geforce GTX1060 and coudn't stand the game for more than 5 minutes.

Hum... A top-down shooter with old but still decent graphics. There's some story involved and it's just a simple one. The main thing is mindless destruction and having a blast with that.

No bugs or crashes. Works fine on Win 7.

Now, It's a very old game and the controls are just awful. Even if you rebind the keys it's still annoying. I can't recommend any games that are easier to play than to control. The fun evaporates the moment you're busier with the mouse than with the enemies. As usual, we should be very wary about positive feedback driven by nostalgia and there's no other good reason to play this nowadays than that. You'd be better playing something else. I will.

This game is an unfortunate little mess.

I love this kind of thing, normally. I enjoy video games at their dumbest - a little sugar rush I can comfortably play without breaking my concentration on a podcast, or a book, or just something more cognitively involved. This game is precisely such a thing, as honestly advertised.

The major, and critical, issue is the lumpy ass control scheme. Expendable has squirrelly Resident Evil type tank controls, wherein forward and side strafing movement occurs relative to your directional orientation. That means, in a situation facing to the left of the screen, you'd have to strafe to your right, per key input, to move toward the top of the screen (the route required to progress about 75% of the time). Pushing your key to go down or reverse (perhaps tellingly called "backpedal" in the key binding option menu) would, in this orientation, propel you to the right of the screen. Trying anything resembling twin stick movement is a fool's errand. Strafing movement is noticeably slower than forward and reverse movement as well, just adding more to the doddering.

Don't forget, there are 360 degrees of wonk to have to deal with here. If you get yourself really befuddled, literally unsure which way is up, I suppose that jumps up to 1440 degrees of wonk, in a sense. If it worked for the early era of the Resident Evil series (which it arguably didn't) it was because the pace of those games allowed for the lumbering movement. This is just moving like a golf cart for no reason.

My most successful and comfortable effort at control basically came from never turning my character from the default straight forward angle, simply strafing and positioning 'beneath' enemies on the screen and taking them on like a unidirectional Terminator.

To be fair to some extent, the game isn't so difficult or otherwise demanding or punishing that this actually ends up impeding progress as much as it would seem to. It's a silly shooty poot type of game with shmuppy levels of enemies made quite easy by the crumbly weakness of those foes and the fact that every surface in the game seems to be a pinata of ammo and health items. The controls won't get in your way of even killing the bosses too terribly.

But they will definitely get in the way of it being as fun as it could be.

This could have been just dumb fun, something I used to cherish at one point in time as a fun rental.

Fabulously retro game from the late 90's which was already a tribute to games from the 80's from the days when lives and continues ruled the day and it even has cakes!

Lego StarWars style multiplayer ( drop in, Drop out) and a ton of weapons, monsters and levels.

Yes... its dated a bit since it came out 20 years ago... but for a slice of retro kitch.... it doesnt get much better.
It has secret modes too... which are clearly 'in jokes' with the devteam.

This game was the first with so many graphics features back in the day which we take for granted now, and I'm just pleased its finally come out on steam.

The controls limited the experience, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and too slow to react to the enemies. Maybe it's just me that can't bear the stiffness of the controls, but for me this issue made me give up very soon. This apart, the concept is very interesting and funny. This could be a much better game.
