Disgaea is one of my favourite games and especially the 5th one in my opinion is the magnum opus of NIS.
The only thing i hope will be added in the future iterations is some sort of modding or at least community addons (like they added for ps4 version only), this way the post game will have infinite possibilities and not end on beating the Baal.
--------------------------------------------------------------
FOR THOSE WHO ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH WINDOWS 11:
I noticed that a lot of people are having massive issues with disgaea specifically on Windows 11, and although it's not NIS' fault, they probably wouldn't fix this especially for an older game like disgaea 5.
I tried different solutions listed in the comments and searched online but nothing really helped me, in my case i had my whole PC freezing and only restarting the system manually would help.
Now to the solution i found. It's a trick i've seen used in other games, you can download "Process Lasso" or other similar tool and do the following:
Options -> CPU -> CPU Affinities -> Process Match: disgaea5.exe -> CPU Affinity, Select, check ALL except CPU 0 -> optinally you can set a delay of 5-10 seconds.
What it does from my understanding is, it frees one of your processor cores and this way when disgaea freeses the whole pc, one core is still working separately and it can recover the system. This fixed the issue for me, i hope it helps!
I just cant recommend these games anymore. It may be that I have out grown them =(
It pains me so much to give this game a negative review because the game deserves nothing but praise. It's my first Disgaea and I've never had so much fun with a tactical RPG before, as hectic as this game is.
However, the game freezes at random after Windows updated to ver. 24H2 and I get it, it's not NIS' fault but I believe they might notice negative reviews on Steam before Microsoft does anything and I know this is nothing but wishful thinking. Well, neither companies will do anything at this point, specially considering that D5 has been launched in 2018, but to be fair, I can't recommend a game that won't solidly run on up to date Windows OS. Here's hoping that NIS will notice that this last update has broken the game down and patch it up. Gotta be optimistic, boys.
I'll be more than willing to write a proper review highlighting how fun this game is once I'm able to play it without losing my progress out of the blue.
Do you like some great humor? Do you enjoy over-the-top attacks? Do you enjoy a nearly endless grind that stops only when you want to? Do you enjoy completely ignoring a character named Seraphina and dissing her at every opportunity?
If you said "yes" to any or all of these, this game is for you. I would highly consider this game to be one of the best Disgaea games for a newcomer to start playing (or if you want a more "classic" Disgaea, go for Disgaea 2). The story is a bit on the weak side at points, but the humor and the grind keep you hooked for more.
You'll very much enjoy this game if you like seeing big numbers go up. It'll tickle that nerve of your brain very nicely. Highly recommended to those who enjoy tactical RPG's, those who love a good grind, and ones who enjoy over-the-top humor.
Just be sure to punch Seraphina in the face.~
I enjoy Disgaea games and really enjoy 5. However even with adjustments to your settings. On PC this game CRASHES fairly often and at random. So you have to make sure you save often so that you do not lose any progress. NIS still hasn't given it a patch update. Maybe it was coded wrong. All I know is I am having to reboot the PC often just to play this game for a little bit. The hardware and software that I am using is new. I just don't recommend getting this for PC. Just play it on console and save your money.
The PC version crashes my computer constantly. Something with Windows 11 and an update causes this game to become unplayable. This is not a rare issue either, there are several other people experiencing this issue.
The game itself is great, but stick with console. The PC version is a mess right now. It's been a mess for a few months now and NIS doesn't seem to be able to get a fix it.

Great game if you are a fan of the series
This is the best release in the Disgaea franchise. Don't come here for the story - it's so bad it's worth skipping entirely, but if you like SRPGs for their gameplay, then this is a must-play.
the old ones like 1 or 2 are better
Despite being a port with some flaws that you can read about in other peoples comments. I highly recommend this game, especially if you catch it on sale. This was peak Disgaea. It was hands down perfection. The story is alright, as far as disgaea games goes it has a more serious story, but still has all the silly moments you would expect. 10/10 Gameplay though. Plenty of time you can sink into this game.
I looooooooooove it this game Disgaea.
More specifically because you can create dragons and play with them. You can strengthen your dragons and finish the game with them. Yes, I love dragons. Disgaea is in the top 1 of my favorite games.
s'good
keep freezing after update
do not buy intel fixed
great game, awesome on steam deck
post game keep you entertained for hours upon hours
If this game came out today they would've cast some retard like Egoraptor as Red Magnus, so I'm glad that's not the case.
I want to recommend this game, but there is currently a bug on PC that will make your system completely freeze up after an hour or so.
Have tried a lot of mentioned fixes, leaving in windowed, turning down resolution, disabling autosave, turning off fullscreen optimization, etc and no fixes stuck.
If you are on older version of windows you may be ok, but if you are updated just grab this on another system if you can until a fix comes out. Shame, was really getting into it
Don't mind the playtime; I have 180+ hours on the Switch version (still rookie numbers, I know).
Just coming here to say that no matter how many new iterations of Disgaea NIS puts out, 5 will remain the magnum opus.
love this game
Very complete and long Disgaea game.
The only reason I haven't played more is because I have to eat and sleep
fun
It's good
One of my top games of all time
reminds me of how much i loved the first two games
I really want to suggest this game to others, but until the issues with it freezing my PC after an hour or so are fixed, I'll just have to say to pass on it.
A shame too, since I'm enjoying what little of it I can play.
Absolutely recommended. Best Diagaea of the series which I always come back to.
Got 9999 hrs on the switch and PS4. Now it's time to click the same buttons on the PC as well. Good controller support.
I would recommend this game to players who:
1. Don't mind reading tons of guides
2. Enjoy min-maxing and grinding
3. Like big numbers
4. Aren't bothered by a mediocre story
5. Have a controller
6. Are willing to stay for the post-game content/100% Achievement
[Other Comments]
- Tough to learn. I read a lot of guides to get 100%.
- Not all levels can be brute-forced with higher stats. Puzzle-solving is key.
- You spend 150+ hours achieving 100% completion, only to discover that some madman did it in 4.5 hours.
- The amount of post-game grinding depends on your ability to multitask and min-max. By beating a stage, you can level up characters, gain mana, upgrade "innocents" and so much more. Should you pick an easy stage with fewer rewards but faster clear time, or vice versa? The smarter your decisions, the quicker the grind.
- Thus, the grind (s u f f e r i n g) I have endured is due to sub-optimal decision-making. It's not meant to be that rough.
- Playing the game in Japanese and English feels totally different
I love the Disgaea series. This and Disgaea 2 are my favorite tactical RPGs. If you like tatical JRPGs, grinding, min-maxing, this is the game for you. I played it for 80+ hours and maybe will come back to it in the future, since I still didn't finish all the post-game content (which is basically 99% of the game).
My overall score: 4.2 / 5 --- I got it on sale, so definitely worth it.
Gameplay: 5/5
Amazing. Fast-paced and tactical. The best in all Disgaea series imo.
Graphics: 4/5
Beautiful graphics overall. They look more modern while remaining loyal to the franchise.
Story: 2/5
The weak point of this game in my point of view. It wasn't really engaging.
Replayability: 5/5
The post-game is where this game shines. If you know how the Disgaea series work, than it's no surprise for you.
Music: 5/5
Wonderful music, maybe one of the best parts of the game for me.
PC Requirements: 4/5
You'll need a little bit more than a toaster to run this, but nothing crazy.
Multiplayer: It's a single player game, so it doesn't apply.
plenty of things and systems to sink your teeth into, as well as your time. game is seriously grind heavy. havent finished it but im on chapter 8, and had played up to chapter 6 on ps4 in the past. recommend you use a controller or play on steam deck, hardly uses the battery and its a good time waster. recommend if your a 'tist like me or like the art (which is kawaii desu UwU) plus it has dlc where you can get etna which is my current life goal.
There ain't nothing like throwing a god damn galaxy into a level 1 penguin
I couldn't really get into this Disgaea because of the song that plays in the Netherworld 3
Лучшая в серии, получается. Несмотря на кастрацию.
I dunno, I'm only 271 hours in; it might be too early to make a decision on this.
First disgaea that i complete, i have 1 and 2 but for some reason couldnt force myself to pass chapter 5 maybe someday but the backlog on games to finish first is way too long.
Story was ok , i just finish the Main game so the real game was about to begin ,the grind part, and that part i will probably never play. I already "sink" 123 h and i think that enough ,The game inst hard and the last boss on the story wasnt hard either ( well i was 20 levels higher). My only problem was the money, and i cheat it so =).
Now Disgaea 7 here i go, played 6 cant look pass the big numbers it bother me for some reason..and is also lagging for some reason....while 7 inst...
Easily one of the better games in the series (I've also played 1, 2, 3, D2, and a little bit of 4). I highly recommend this to any fan of SRPGs who loves to grind and watch numbers get really big.
I've been a fan of NIS games since the PS2 era - I started out with Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom before moving to the Disgaea series, and went on to buy pretty much every game NISA released for PS2 and PS3, (Ar Tonelico on PC when, NISA? I need it!).
Fair warning if you choose this title as your entry point into the series - with how many QoL and improved game systems that have been added across the series, you may find it difficult to play the older games simply due to the lack of features and slower nature of the gameplay. If you want to jump into a mechanically solid game with a nearly overwhelming number of systems right away, this is your pick. If you want to take your time getting accustomed to the series and gradually increase the depth and complexity, then I'd say pick up 1 & 2 first.
My playtime at the time of review (~290 hours, as Steam isn't including time played offline) includes two partial story play-thrus (the first to around chapter 5-6, the second to chapter 8), and one complete story play-thru that's just entering the post-game.
This is the equivalent of season 7 of the Game of Thrones for the Disgaea series. The last of the greats with the old art style we love and enjoy. From here things go downhill :(...
To me Disgaea 5 is the most completed Disgaea game so far. Wonder why? let me tell you, Disgaea games has always been a crazy tactical game since the first game. You can max out and broke pre-defined characters stats, make characters learn moves not in their class, skill animation has way too much effort put into it and the list goes on. But what makes Disgaea 5 the most completed in my opinion is because they fleshed out some mechanics for better or worse and add more mechanics that make the game a lot better. Even then I couldn't really recommend this one to new player because it is overwhelmingly packed with content. Like waaaaayyy too much. I couldn't even understand the game and the story when i first play it a long time ago. Why the character just shot him? Is that an enemy or allies? Why an enemy join our party? I don't understand much back then but then I try Disgaea 1 and loved it. It makes me understand more about this Disgaea world moreover because the first game is simpler honestly in all things. So I really recommend this game to every Disgaea or Tactical fans out there except new players who never heard of Disgaea or even touch a tactical game. If you're new to this, you should play the earlier version like Disgaea 1,2,4 but if you still want to buy this one, consider reading the "help" option fully because it will pretty much explain everything there are about how to play Disgaea.
Best Disgaea game to date.
The art, voice acting, and music is so good. But wow is the writing (and main character) atrocious. I haven't finished the story but I'm guessing it's going to be as basic as it's ramping up to be.
Systems and gameplay could be fun, but the writing and characters are not for me. I don’t see myself grating through this game. I got this on sale and would recommend others do the same before spending full price, as the humor definitely has a target audience.
Go to Item world
then grind , grind and grind
great and fun storyline as Disgaea 2
i would recommend if you're looking for tactical-RPG
top notch!
as of now, favorite game for steam deck
👍
This is the peak of Disgaea for features and play. 6 was a step backwards that apparently continued with 7; that I'm not going to buy until a sale.
So Disgaea 1-5 good.
Great game! Easily the best in the series in terms of storyline and engagement.
This is, buy and large, the BEST tactical RPG I have ever played!
Nothing compares to the pure depth, spectacle, and hilarity that ooze from every moment i've spent with it.
Also the Prinnys. I really like the Prinnys!
Definitely needed this after finishing Disgaea 6's lack of content. Don't get me wrong, D6 does have its audience, just not the usual Disgaea fanbase since plays more like a mindless mobile game. Apparently they pulled it back some with D7 but i honestly don't want to pay 80$ just to find out so here i am on 5.
Story-wise, its a lot more dark then 4, which can be a turn off if you were so into 4 like i was (still be favourite), but it does have decent character building as each becomes more comfortable with being a team as you progress (albeit forced for the first half lol).
Gameplay-wise, pretty much all you could want in a disgaea game that was built on all the games before it, has most of what made them games good and then some. If all you are are a casual player of games, around 20 hours, level 150-200 characters and a decent weapon on each is all you really need. Anything beyond that has its usual min-max potential of the item world, into the grind fest maps, into the character world, reincarnating, and doing it all over again until your unit has max weapon profs and max stat growths. Then you go into the carnage dimension and that's when the true grind starts. And of course, ends with a quad Baal fight that that you can go to at any time near the end of the main story that will instantly kill any unit with less then 50m hp as they leave the base panel.
Lots of sources to actually grow your characters, and unlike older Disgaea titles, there isn't a limit on item world floors so you can max out any weapon of any rank just by going deep enough into them with maxed out innocents of each stat, though base rank 1 Carnage weapons are better stated then a rank 40 normal weapon with growth that is pretty much 3x faster so not recommended to go hard on it until you get some of those.
In conclusion, if you're dissatisfied with the direction Disgaea went after 5, then 5 is definitely a good way to get your min-max kick that isn't inflated numbers for the sake of having higher numbers. I quite enjoyed playing it, was a nice palate cleanser after 6. Not fully done playing yet, but i wanted to play other things so it's shelved for now and i'll be back once i feel like playing disgaea again.
My favorite game ever, please make Disgaea 5 two
