If you want a real life simulator that's not like real life at all, this is the game for you.
Pros:
- Funny achievement names.
- Rent goes up over time, mimicking cost-of-living increases.
- Stock market can be lucrative (get in there early and watch it often!).
- Lotto scratch-off tickets are like in real life -- you're basically wasting your money. (Except they cost WAY more in the game than you'd spend in real life).
Cons:
- You're fired. Constantly. Doesn't matter if job security is high or low, or if you're working a job that requires education... expect to be fired anywhere between 7 and 30 days (more commonly between 14 and 30).
- If you're fired before payday, you get the pay you are owed. However, if you switch jobs before payday, it seems that you don't get the pay owed (or there was no pop-up stating as such, but it seemed to me that my cash didn't go up at all). So if you want to switch jobs but need the upcoming cash from the current job, time it well against paydays, and hope that the classifieds don't change before you switch.
- You can't take on debt to get education. Haven't they heard of student loans?
- The same events happen over and over. How many times can you "overuse" and "break" your TV, or fall down the stairs while on your phone? Apparently, quite a bit.
- Taxes are brutal, especially when you're busy getting fired a lot.
- The shop is buggy. It sometimes shows that you own things, other times it'll show a count of 0 until you buy it again, only to find out that you wasted your money.
- You can't pause the game. "You can't pause real life!" is what it tells you... but since this isn't anything like real life anyway, how about a pause button?
- There's a "save and exit" feature, but no autosave (which is a bummer... the game crashed on me in my first 30 minutes of playing so I completely lost that character). There's also no button to simply save without exiting; if you want to save, you're going to the main menu (thankfully it loads quickly).
Too much of the gameplay is unsatisfying, so I don't recommend wasting your time with this game.
The game is cute, and it's nice that it gets updates. But it's wildly inaccurate and was clearly made by someone with a negative outlook on life. There are a lot of really random and completely unavoidable debts you incur (like your mom sending you a $10,000 medical debt to pay?!) and it's nearly impossible to hold any job for more than a couple weeks. Additionally, the stock market in this game doesn't perform nearly as well as any realistic market. Overall, this is a game that really makes things seem harder than they are in real life.
This game is still buggy even after the recent updates.
This game would b great if only they didn't break something every time they fix something. The updates are far and few between and most of the breaks make it unplayable. So you are left waiting for a fix for half a year. And in the mean time you can't play. As of right now the stock market is broken. Scratch tickets are broken. Financeing items is broken. Don't buy until it becomes playable again.
Very poor game.'This Grand Life' is MUCH better.
If real life wasn't already enough to keep you in a constant state of anxiety fueled by debt, and never ending life events that come at the most inopportune times, then hold on to your socks cause Life and Debt is here!
It's a fun game, priced about the same as a good cup of coffee and blacker than the soul of the barista who served it to you. The developer did a great job on such a simple game and the updates over time have been good to see. LaD:ARLS is a good time waster and a funny comparison to the struggles of the daily grind.
If you need to kill a few hours, this game's worth it.
It really sucks
First of all I would like to thank the developer for fixing the game as I had purchased prior to the latest update.
The game itself is what it says to be. It's a simulation game of "adulthood" the goal is to buy every piece of furniture (there are 35 pieces total) and pay down your dept. I love how you gain debt with quirky (yet somewhat believeable) scenarios. Such as, "Your car has been blasted by a meteor and insurance does not pay for ""acts of space""". Also, there are quirky scenarios when you gain money such as: You got "hurt" at work and received workers comp. This gives you $10,000 dollars and it may be strange and funny to admit that being hurt on the job was the best thing to happen in this game. One thing however, is about my little bundles of joy (the children) I know this is realistic but, no child that I know has spent $10-20 thousand dollars on credit card purchases a more realistic number would probably be $1,000. Last complaint, When i become a surgeon, I can only keep the job for a payday! I understand you are trying to make the game hard but, Could the job security thing be improved? All in all though, if you are looking for a funny, realistic, light-hearted, challenging game, look no further.
Timer/calendar goes forever (at one point it told me it was the 60th of August, and debt doesn't get paid off when I spend my money, but my money gets subtracted. Would be a really cool game if it worked.
This game is so much fun to play! The life events keep the game interesting and it is difficult enough to keep you coming back again and again. Definitely worth a try!
Meh, Not bad, Not that fun. Save and exit does not work as lose all progress made. Irritated me as only went out for a smoke, came back to find i had to start all over again.
Out of the very few features, half of them serve no purpose (lotto, being able to walk through your house) while the other half is desperately underdeveloper.
Overall there is very little strategy involved. You get randomly fired and slapped with $10,000 debt events.
This is a work in progress not worth $5.
Really enjoyed this. Begging the Life & Debt gods for a windfall so I can pay off the debt in time.
Life and Debt from the twitch streamer Krassenstein is really well done, I very much enjoy this game, and while it has a few random moments of minor visual bugs, it didn't detract from what it was, a simulation of buying items and managing debt, if you want to tackle random events and all the evil chances of getting a 25k copy right debt from some random musical company!
Seriously if you want to take and spend an hour once in awhile on a siumulation this is it, I find this to be exciting, engaging and the music I never turned off because it went so well with the game!
I give this indie game a years bonus, out of 10.
One step forward, two steps back describes this game perfectly.It is the most frustrating game I've ever played,however I can see myself putting in many more hours.I've beaten it twice,the second time to get the achievment,so I say to all those masochists out there get on steam and buy it now.

Finally beat it on hard.
LifeAndDebt is a fun simulator where you must obtain all items in the shop and reach a debt of 0.
It has random life events which will either benefit or damage your economical state. The creator has announced that more content is to be added. Watching him work on this project
has been a lot of fun and I will continue to watch and give ideas, which he is really open to. The game can be quite hard
so, if you're up for the challenge, go ahead! Would for sure recommend as you won't get bored whilst playing this. You might get irritated because things don't go your way but I'm guessing that's how life works ;p
After playing this game for about 3 and a half hours and beating Easy mode I can say it gets pretty intense at the end. There is real strategy to it. I loved all the random events and the fact that some of it relates to real life and some is very humorous. I look forward to playing it again with the chill music and relaxing. Basically you can play the game that way or go for a harder mode and really make it tough. The art is fun and the Game Dev really updates and fixes the game quickly if there are any changes to be made based on people playing it. This really is a fun version of a life simulator where you try to purchase items without getting too far into debt. Thank you Static City Games for being awesome!
P.S. The price is very reasonable in my opinion as well. Support those indie devs yo!
This game has the same addiction level as games like Cookie Clicker however it is quite a challenge in order to complete. I played on Normal difficulty, thought I was doing really well and all of a sudden my debt caught up with me and I lost. I'll try again on other difficulties but the entire time I was playing it had my complete attention.
