It's very clear the devs gave up on this game towards the end of development, things just sort of run out and your left with no need to do anything, there's no end game and the only resource that you're left needing is fruit for food and dust. There's not even a way to clear undesirable tiles to optimise your layout if you wanted to end your game with a pretty self-sufficient town.
I got this game on Humble Bundle back in the day, I'm disappointed that a non DMR copy no longer seems to exist But for some reason this version is...broken? I can only get to the first 3 of the 7 pillar things you need to activate to stablize the islands. No matter what I try I can't get the other 4 to spawn in the game.
Waste of money.
I enjoyed it, it's a simple game but really fun. Played for longer than the 5 hours as I played it from Humble Bundle's vault before buying on Steam because I wanted it in my library :)
not worth the listed price. maybe $5 (at best) or less.
not much of a challenge honestly, most of the research and buildings are useless. just rush to the 7 pillars and activate them. that's about it. nothing else matters. pointless to research too far along the tech tree.
tutorial is somewhat broken - no check in place for failing tutorial. the game ends up being in a 'stuck' mode and forced to quit and restart manually.
pretty graphics, neat concept, but just falls flat on game play. very bland.
i didnt realize this game was out until a few days ago
its a fun little kingdom builder, cute graphics, not super deep but its good material for listening to music or podcasts and zoning out. only really have like three things i wish this game has that it doesnt:
1) half speed setting. normal speed can be a bit fast for me when im stoned out lmao
2) some kind of infinite survival mode
3) this is definitely the most frivolous thing, but i wish there was an option to play it with a night-time palette. im up nights and its kinda bright to look at in the evening (also i just have a weakness for night aesthetics lmao)
dont pass this up imo unless youve already got your fill of citybuilding and/or chill-out games
Game looks good at first, but is incredible shallow, short and repetitive. After 4 hours of gameplay, there is nothing new to do for me.
Fun little game, for what it is - short and relaxing mix of puzzle and strategy.
It covers all of the bases - research, resource management and time management (speed up and slow - although funnily enough pause doesn't actually stop time entirely, it only slows it down to a crawl). It has pleasant graphics and music.
I have one minor gripe with Volantia, however: I fail to see the point of the later buildings.
Curators may work faster, but in practice in my game I hardly needed them. The last research building comes so late and with such steep requirements that I finished the research anyway well before it became operational. I skipped the performance-enhancing buildings because the level of micromanagement of the space needed to fit them in - while also juggling roads, holes between my tiles, and everything else - felt like too much effort for a reward I did not feel a need for. I dumped matter into instant island discovery instead.
None of that prevented me from completing the game or having fun. It just felt a bit odd.
TL, DR: fun little relaxing game. If you don't plan on replaying it, might be best to wait for a sale.
It's a cute resource management game / city (hamlet?) builder. I quite like the hand-drawn style, it's like a little picture book. I'm particularly fond of the little helper sprites.
The game itself is sadly quite short, you can satisfy your main objectives in under two hours, and then it's and endless and open sandbox. (in fact, the map is only getting bigger). However, it had enough to do that it kept me interested for a while after.
Some polish and ease of use tweaks would be appriciated, though.
For now i would have to give this game a thumbs down, because i found it very bland and boring. Would be happy to give it a thumbs up if they added more content or expanded the storyline.
Fun, casual resource management game. Tetris meets supply-chain management.
Not a whole lot of content here (a session can be completed in about an hour and a half), the objectives are the same, always (connect to 7 monoliths). The replayability comes from randomly generated island tiles. Don't get this if you're expecting something super deep (or a campaign)--it's more of a game that you can pick up and finish if you're bored for an hour.
A cute strategy game, based on resource management.
Your building area is created using small islands given to you over time, you attach these to your main island. You gain access different ways of aquiring new small islands as you progress.
You start off with simple tech that uses raw resources and slowly build up to improved tech that allow you to build self suffient systems.
The art style matches the gameplay and I often find myself just watching the world in motion.
Sound effects and music are also nicely produced, although I would have liked to have seen some extra sounds for some of the notifications.
If there was anything I would have liked to have seen, that would have been some extra scenarios or challenges, completing these could have maybe also led to achievements which are also something that are missing.
Volantia is a pleasant experience, the developers should be proud of the result. I hope they find themselves working together again on another project.
