Having a vaguely similar theme to Asteroids (i.e. there is space, rocks and shooting) does not make it "an unabashed, lazy ripoff" like some disgruntled reviewer said. Imagine if the first racing game were the only one allowed because it has a car and a racetrack--it was 2D black and white. This game is more like a combination of Bit Blaster (Adamvision), Bosconian (Namco) and Mad Planets (Gottleib), none of which were accused of ripping off Asteroids.
Anyway, like Bit Blaster, this game is mostly about accumulating coins to upgrade your ship...er...planet. Your planet comes with a couple of moons that orbit and auto-fire. The enemy planets don't break up like asteroids, but they do leave bonus objects to collect. The game isn't bound by the screen, but like Bosconian you stay in the center and scroll around a large, and highly populated map.
There is plenty of variety in this game, with exotic powerups and exotic enemies, and things to explode everywhere. The music changes when you upgrade, and the visuals look good. This is easily worth the dollar they're asking for.
Lucky me gets to write the first English review for this Chinese Asteroids ripoff.
Star Clash is an unabashed, lazy ripoff of Asteroids (Copyright Atari, 1981). Many lazy "amateur" developers don't pay attention to their obligations under copyright law, and often steal the ideas of actual, real game developers without credit, such as the "developer" here has done. At this stage no legal action has been taken by Atari against the "developer" here, but it's never off the table, as previous copyright law cases have shown.
Putting aside the unethical intellectual bankruptcy of stealing someone else's game concept for profit, this is also breaking that unwritten law of stealing other people's game ideas... you should at least try to do better than the game you're ripping off. Star Clash is considerably worse than Asteroids.
This Chinese knockoff does feature a few upgrades, like the ability to choose different planets... yeah, in this game you control planets and your orbiting moons help out by generating shields or shooting randomly. There's an autoshoot function, I guess this isn't a bad thing because basically Asteroids was always a button masher, timing your shots was never important, and that's the kind of shallowness that the industry moved along from as soon as gaming computers became capable of better. Although, the developer doesn't seem to agree with that, and that's a problem.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing.
The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming.
The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2023 (and this was released not so far back in 2018), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Star Clash is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
