I don't understanding anything about the progression system or the story, but the gameplay is so fun that it doesn't really matter. Highly recommended.
Charming, underrated, hard as f**k
Game being in Early Access for 7 years can mean 2 things - either devs dont give a shit about it, or by now said game far exceeds fully released games in both content and quality, and this one is the latter. Over 100 bosses, over 100 upgrades (hell maybe even over 200), over 700 achievements, original soundtrack, unique mechanics, fairly regular updates, and all of this done by a solo dev. I truly wish this game would blow up, cause it has every mean to be successful. The only 2 things preventing this to happen is if you don't like bullet hells, in which case you would get skilled issued real quick, or really mild nudity (which can be turned off), that would turn off some people from the game, but few hours in you won't even notice it anymore, since it's not shoved in your face whatsoever. What is shoved in your face, however, is hundreds of projectiles flying at you faster than when your father left you.. well except those projectiles retract and return back, unlike your father, in higher level bossfights, whilst you need to find one millimeter spot in all of that flying bullshi* to avoid said projectiles.. same as you avoided your parents when they argued (am not projecting here).
But honestly 99% on Steam reviews is speaking for itself. It's been quite some time since I unironically could say that something is a true hidden gem, and this one for sure is.
A true labor of love, nominated it as such. Superb gameplay, heartfelt story and mood, great soundtrack. Reasonable duration runs in Story mode with multiple other game modes.
Story put short is, you are a fairy like creature who can't fly, despite this you want to spread love and understanding for all, every monster has something good and beautiful in them just like you, even if social norms say you have to be this or be able to do that or look like this or behave like that. You are stuck in an endless repeating nightmare like realm where it won't stop raining, the monsters forget who they are and the good they are capable of but with a bit of love from you they will remember even if only for a short time. To keep trying and spread love and joy even if the task is doomed to be repeated, your efforts forgotten, and never really truly succeed is a powerful message.
As for gameplay, the dynamic difficulty system is excellent, if you are feeling strong you can choose higher level bosses to fight and if you go overboard the game will at times offer to lower the level of the creatures for you. Sometimes they have more or better rewards, sometimes you just love fighting one boss over another. I have had moments where I felt like a gamer god with superb loadout and started challenging the most bullet hell horrors the game has to offer and sometimes I just want to have a semi relaxing semi challenging run. There is a LOT of variety in what you face, and the level of the creature you face can and will drastically change how they work or even the environment they exist in, not just amount or speed of projectiles.
Lots of metaprogression which I am fine with even if I know some might not be, you want to complete different objectives for the various bosses to unlock new stuff and farm some of the different colored Tetrids for more unlocking. For me it is just a bit of incentive and has not really bothered me. It all progresses reasonably.
The concept of just boss rushes is perfect for me as those are generally the most interesting parts of shmups, and even then the variety in this game also helps to prevent it from getting stale, lots of different vulnerabilities and strengths to watch out for. You got varying damage and resistance types, tons of powerups, helpers, weapon modifiers, Panic attack/bomb equivalents and so on. Such great amounts of content to build your runs with, or customize a specific one in the alternate game modes. I will always come back to this game to experience the joy of playing and seeing all the creatures I love again.
Love all the monsters, we are all beautiful in our own ways.
This game is seriously good, I have no idea how I have never heard about it until now. If you have any interest in bullet hell games, this is an easy recommendation.
My hours played is a bit bugged for some reason but it just read over 12 hours this morning and I clocked in another few- Ive only had it for 2 days. I'm genuinely obsessed beyond comprehension. The gameplay is riddled with the passion and authenticity from the developer. I can only imagine whats to come with a full release.
Most games make me put on a background noise as the music becomes grating. This game's OST perfectly fits the vibes. The repetition has not once gotten on my nerves - I thought that was impossible. Im at the point Im hoping for some sort of CD or Vinyl release.
This is one of those once in a lifetime indie games, with the easy parallel being Undertale. The bullet hell system is leagues better here. The roguelike genre makes it far more my leage, with impeccable game design for the genre. The upgrades and unlocks dont feel intrusive to the difficulty in any way! Finally, I feel I must touch on the story.
While it currently feels like flavor, I am in high hopes far more is to be added. I have only completed about 20% of the game so far, but due to how it tracks progress, Im led to believe Ive seen a solid chunk of the story and a most of the work in progress esc dialog. I see a solid story so far, and hope as the characters get fleshed out and have storylines they'll become just as if not more memorable than a lot of Undertale characters.
Im confident if this game had the cultural backing Undertale had from name recognition through Homestuck, and people weren't babies about artistic nudity thats NOT BAD AT ALL??? It'd be a huge success far beyond what niche pocket of the internet it holds space in currently.
Heres to a full release that matches my expectations as the audience. /j
No, I feel however the developer goes about making this game will be optimal for it's vibes. Even if it never got another update, i fear it is already a top 5 game in my books of all time and favorite currently.
Thank you immensely for this game.
I was expecting to not like this game as much as I did, mainly because I think trying to make a shmup/bullet hell into a roguelite is conceptually not a great idea. I decided to grab it anyways since it was getting great reviews and the developer clearly put a lot of passion into it. I still am not totally convinced that this makes a great bullet hell game, but if you go into it looking for a unique-ish bullet hell themed roguelite, then I think you'll have a lot of fun. I'm not a fan of the story at all (reminds me too much of the area I grew up in/people I grew up around) and end up skimming the text while mashing through it, but the sheer amount of modes, unlockables, and variations on weapons/bosses has kept me coming back for multiple runs.
I don't know how much i'd recommend this to my friends who like shmups, since it takes a while to get difficult and the random nature of powerups can make runs vary wildly. I am definitely not the best at them (still don't have an arcade clear, mostly because I bounce from game to game rather than grinding anything) but even with my mild experience I found the default unlocked difficulties boring, and difficulty 3 takes about half the run to ramp into something challenging. However, for people who are new to bullet hells, this is a great entry point. It teaches you about focus mode and hitboxes not matching your full sprite, and gives metaprogression rewards for doing good bombs and scoring well. It incentivizes you to try and play around scoring bosses, without making the entire run hinge on how well you can pull it off. I also really like the metaprogression in this game, I was worried that it would just be "make the game easier lol", and while there's a tiny bit of that it's mostly unlocking information. You can unlock bosses to practice against in a score attack mode, and you can unlock powerup info to be able to view them as rewards before you choose a boss. So while it definitely helps, it's not necessary. There's also an absolute boatload of achievements, so if you're like me and you love those, here's a game for you!
In short, i'd say that if you're new to bullet hells/shmups, and for some reason don't want to play arcade games yet, this is a good entry point. It teaches you fundamentals, reinforces helpful skills, and will show you some common patterns shared across multiple games. Also, if you like bullet hells, and are okay with this being more of a roguelite than a standard STG experience, then I'd also recommend this game. Apparently there's some mild debate over the nudity in this game? I didn't even really notice it, it's just a bunch of fantasy creatures shaped like humans and they're not really sexualized at all
Juegazo. Probablemente el mejor bullet-hell shmup que haya jugado nunca.
Tiene un montonazo de contenido, es súper divertido, tiene mucha variedad, la música es genial, es buenísimo.
This game took the last two days that I've been in the computer. It is absolutely stunning, it's suuper fun. If you don't like that it has nudism there is an option to turn it off, but it isn't too much and after 1-2 hours since there will be less cutscenes you'll also have less nudism in sight.
The gameplay loop is extremely fun, the quickplay mode is really interesting and very well made. It makes you want to play more and get better at X boss you're having difficulty at.
In a sense, it is similar to The Binding of Isaac. You do X thing against X boss and you unlock somethi,g. But in this case it is easier to know what to do since before you fight a boss you have the ability to see what unlocks you have and haven't done with it.
Overall, great experience. Will play more and I am very interested to see what the dev will give us in the next update.
I've got to say, while I'm a big fan of roguelikes I'm not a fan of bullet hells.
This game though? Entirely different. The intriguing story, the simple yet addictive game loop and finally the crazy amount of unlock-able content - that scratches the roguelike itch - has me screaming for "just one more run."
If you're into shmups, you're going to like this one. It's an awesome game with tons of content, though it can be a bit overwhelming at the beginning.
The story? It's okay, I guess. It’s not for me, I find it extremely off-putting and cringe.
But in bullet hell games, gameplay is king, and this one absolutely delivers. The gameplay is insanely good, simple yet challenging, with a ton of variations. After finally completing my first run (a few hours in), it showed I had only 1–2% completion, so there’s definitely more than enough content to explore.
The graphics are decent, not fancy, but fitting for this genre. The sound effects are great.
This game is fantastic for the price. If you enjoy Rogue-lite/like games and the screenshots catch your eye, you should definitely give it a shot
One of my all time favorite bullet hells. the story mode feels great to play and try to make a god run in, and quickplay is perfect for quick sessions. add to this fun characters and this becomes an amazing experience
It's a bullethell rougelike. While I'm not the biggest fan of bullethells this game makes it really interesting with each run wit the randomly obtained gear and different bosses. There's also an interesting story within the games that also ties in the repetition that rougelikes inherently have.
For gameplay a run will start with you picking a character. Each character has different starting stats and damage types. You'll then be presented with up to 3 different options on a boss to fight. You'll also see what the rewards are for each boss. In the beginning the options are hidden, but you get to see the general power of the item you'll be getting, like if it's a level 2 item, or multiple items. Any boss that you haven't faced at least once will be hidden as well, while bosses you have faced will have their name and picture revealed, with their stats hidden. In order to reveal these, you have to beat the boss and obtain the rewards. Part of the rewards for every boss is an elemental coin. At the main menu you can spend these coins to permanently unveil either a boss, or a reward so that way in future runs, you can make more informed decisions. Revealing a boss will show it's stats, which consist of of it's elemental resistances, it's weaknesses and it's damage type. Rewards will be temporarily revealed when obtained in a run, so you aren't just playing blind. Once you beat a boss, you'll move on to facing the next. There are 3 bosses in a stage and 3 stages in a run. After the 3rd stage there's a specific final boss. A part of the random bosses you pick from is a leveling system for the bosses. If you pick a higher level boss, you'll see higher level bosses later in the run. If you pick easier bosses, you'll see easier bosses later in the run. The caveat to that is higher level bosses give you a higher karma, and higher karma means bigger rewards from future bosses, as well as rewards more commonly not having a downside, or a challenge associated to obtaining them. While I don't have much time in the game, it seems the optimal strategy on the harder difficulties isn't to just pick the hardest option all the time and it's instead of doing a balancing act of making sure you are strong enough for the final boss, but also not murdering yourself with insanely hard bosses by the end of the game, especially cause the harder difficulties are raising the level of bosses from the very beginning and they raise their cap, too. Runs aren't that long either. A boss can be anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes, with an average of like 2, and a full run is around 10 to 15 minutes. That's very different than other rouges that can usually take upwards of an hour.
For unlocking things, there's a list of challenges in game sorted by the type of unlock they are. You can easily see an unlock list for bosses, for passive items, for usable items, etc. etc. There are a ton of them, and you'll be accidentally getting plenty of them by just playing the game. For boss specific ones, there's a Quickplay mode that'll allow you to select a boss, items, and the bosses level for a one-off fight. There's a scoring system for each of them too, but achievements are not disabled for these, meaning you can keep trying over and over on one specific boss until you complete it's specific challenges instead of ramming your head into the rng wall to try to get it in a story run.
All together this game is really addicting, runs are fast, and gameplay is really fun. I just have a minor gripe and that's the unlock system. It seems a little excessive that I need to do a challenge to unlock an item, then play the game to get the necessary amount of coins to reveal the unlock just so I can see what it does before I select it. It's not the worst thing though, as so far it doesn't really feel like I'm "farming" for these, and it's more of just a slightly tedious thing to do in between each run. Maybe there's a certain unlock method, but I'm just unlocking the first thing that's available in the list of things as I move down it. I'll either eventually unlock everything anyways, or quit the game before I get there. Either way, I feel that mechanic just doesn't really have a bearing on the game, and just inflates and slows the completion percentage.
It's bloody criminal how little attention this game is getting. Don't like the story, don't like the name, but this is SUCH a smartly designed game. Hours of unlocks which would be worth nothing in the gameplay weren't there. But it is - each of these boss rush enemies has really satisfying attack patterns and firm but fair difficulties. There's so much enemy variety and almost all of them are great. The bosses don't reach the highs of Crimzon clover, or some of the Cave games, but they're all excellent, all have like 15 levels of difficulty gameplay format is much much better than the traditonal schmup.
Honestly wish I'd heard of this one sooner.
Great game and I highly recommend it to people who love bullet hells, especially of the boss rush kind.
Although I do feel like much of the themes of the game clash with the gameplay itself. Because when I'm trying to beat hard fights, complete some of the dreams and complete achievements to unlock more content, I'm feeling anything but love and happiness.
Played this at the end of the year and it is my favorite game of the year. I enjoy the way it is build, the way it incrementaly teaches you how to play bullet hell. The motivation via unlocking constantly new bosses and new items is immense. On top of a solid game comes a story with a message most big budget titles can't communicate. Well done Dev!
I haven't played too much of this game just yet. I've only just unlocked a 3rd character but I have to post this because this game is AMAZING!!! You're doing an amazing job Veyerals! :)
And this game is in early access?! :0
I'll do a follow-up review once I've seen most of what this game has to offer!
I love Undertale so much if only there was more in a touhou-style that was incredibly cute and well polished.... OH WAIT!!
:D
Void beats heart, heart shoots love, love beats monsters, monsters beats void, heart beats Battlestar Galactica
TlDr; An amazing game full of charm and tons of content.
It is pleasantly challenging; nothing impossible for even a casual like me but it is still very difficult. The combat system is really great, Karma [currency~ gained when you defeat monster. It is reset between runs] helps balance everything, the more karma you have the better gifts you get but you'll need to fight stronger monsters to gain more karma.
The gifts are also amazing, [gifts are gained when you defeat monsters, they are power-ups for your run.] Although it takes a while to be able to choose your build, when you can It feels awesome, like you're getting somewhere and when you discover new gifts it is always nice to be aware of more options.
The events add so much charm to this game. [Not gonna say more because of what I consider spoilers, but just know these events are so gosh-darn cute!]
The dreams system is honestly one of the best uses of achievements I've seen [A dream is an achievement, when you complete a dream you can unlock something new, like a monster or gift that you can discover in your next run.]
An intriguing story; I've barely scratched the surface of the story but I'm really interested with where it's going so far [Not going to say more because of spoilers]
And there's still more! I'm barely through 20% of the game myself!
an absolutely charming game that is unabashedly its own, with so much content it makes me (a collectionist freak) froth at the mouth. huge recommend from me, im so autistic about it
also this is a SOLO DEV PROJECT???? WHAT??????? huge props to Angel for this incredible game
Great enemy variety and bullet hell/roguelike/roguelite mechanics. And mega dopamine hits at unlocking the hundreds of new things.
I bought it and played for 6 hours straight, easly one of the best bullet hell games I played. I also saw a patch note 3 days ago, and this game came out in 2018, that tells a lot about the dev behind this gem.
This is probably the best rogue like stg out there in the world now. The difficulty is pretty flexible and atmosphere is awesome. My only complaint is that a large portion of items are just stat related.
Really good game with a lot of depth (and a LOTTTT of achievements) . And it's still getting updated with new content .
i just have to say that i absolutly love this game, it is good old clasic arcasde fun but just enough difrent to feel fresh, the rougelite mechanics are lovely but make it very dificult to complete fully, this game is 6 years old and in early acces which means that in this it is prety frequently updated with new bosses and events and such. it is dificult and i am not very good at it, but sometimes you just hit a very good run and you you randomly dont get hit on a level 9 boss and that feels just awsome, talking about bosses, each boss is unique and diffrent has layers which makes you get familiar with each of them before they get very dificult. i just love it and the work that went into it, the artstyle is pretty too and the story is pretty sad at times. but over al i love it just like i show my love to al these monsters i show my love to the game as wel, love tituti
Amazing game, incredible amount of content and effort and its not even out of early access, narrative is cute and heartfelt with heavier topics that dont clash, the gameplay is fun even though i cant even consistently win a heavy rain
This game is ♥♥♥♥.
This is the first proper bullet hell game I've ever played as they don't seem my style, but the look and mechanics lured me in, after recently suckering my friend into playing this who also wasn't interested at first we can both confidently say this game is the shit.
peak gameplay with infinite replayability, addictive difficulty, charming character interactions, lovely music and constant updates
..This is a really good game with a very passionate solo dev!
It's cute, heart warming and brutal as hell with the higher difficulties but never unfair.
I want nothing but success for these young alien girls <3
Fuck Veyeral Rain tho genuinely
Absolutely amazing, well well well worth the price. Endless amount of content it feels like.
This game has been around for 6 years, Tho years were used to slowly add and advance this game by one man. This game is truly a game to grow and be remembered as a true passion project.
Great game, probably not 99% worthy, but still highly recommended. Nice mix of a shmup and a rogue like. Certainly a bit easy for the shoot em up pros but a very nice as well as relaxing game for more casual fans of this type of games.
Gas
tumblr the video game but it's consistently amazing and keeps getting better the more you play. Lesbian aliens with a lot of generic you can do it themes but they're played in a unique way that makes it special
Beats first run after many failed attempts
"1.4% complete"
"3 game modes still locked"
"2 of a total 8 charters locked"
The playtime will you last longer than Liz Truss's Prime Ministership
One of the best games of all time. Great gameplay that is easy to play but hard to master, and the roguelike elements make every run unique and engaging. The characters are incredibly charming, and the art style is gorgeous. The theme of learning to accept love and realize your self worth is very personal to me, and I'm so excited to see how the story progresses as we get closer and closer to a full release. Worth every single cent.
I have made so many friends in this game with the power of L O V E!
This game saved me, also its a really good interesting game
shoutout to veyeral
I love this game! I love the boss rush nature of it. I play it from time to time when I can and even after 40 hours I’ve only finished around 30% of it! (according to the game). The amount of content this game has is insane, and it will only get bigger (this review is being written while the game is still in early access). If I were to make a criticism, it’s that the runs feel a little bit samey at the beginning of the game, but that’s just because you haven’t unlocked anything yet. Maybe a solution could be more items already unlocked when you play it for the first time? I don’t know maybe it isn't even a problem. Also, the music is incredible and the visuals are mesmerizing!. If you want to buy it I really recommend it! And my congrats to VeyeralGames for working on this game for 6 YEARS, ALONE!!! This level of dedication inspires me to one day also make my own videogame. ^^
This game is fucking adorable and I love it. It's a completionist's dream, with achievements and unlockables out the whazoo. I hope you give it a shot, it'll fill that void in your heart NO ONE'S EVER MADE THAT JOKE BEFORE ABSOLUTELY NO-ONE- HEY, DON'T TAKE THE MICROPHONE AWAY IT'S ALL I HA-
This is one of the only games in the last few years that I have not gotten on sale, and I still think that the game is under-priced for the sheer amount of game here. The game is also very well polished which while not entirely rare for an early access game nowadays is still very impressive for the aforementioned large amount of content.
Wonderfully made and highly underrated. the payment is more then worth its price.
Early access? This is a full on experience, let me tell you, with in this early access there are hours upon hours of full gameplay. An amazingly done bullethell, with a really sad story. And still, it fills me with a sense of worth, a sense of love.
Please, if you enjoy bullet hells, roguelikes, shoot em up, amazing stories. Get this game, get it for yourself, for your friends, for your mom, everyone deserves to experience this.
Such a hidden gem of a game, and a heart-warming and touching concept. I am utterly addicted in a way I didn't think I could ever with an early access game. Never before did I think I could love such an ugly and repulsive creature as her, but here i am.. absolutely smitten. Thanks for the gem solo dev.
This is, in my opinion, the best game of the genre. I don't normally like bullet hells actually as they seem mindless and don't bring you anywhere. This game feels like it has real progression in it and that every battle matters.
The bosses are very well-designed and the patterns they attack you with are very engaging, especially considering their attack patterns can change based on the level!
The story, whilst not finished yet, actually warms my heart. The idea of loving monsters instead of destroying them is such a sweet idea. I have unlocked all 4 currently unlockable characters and am looking forward to when the 5th one arrives. I would say Twin Heart is the hardest to play as, due to having to be near to enemies to attack them! I like this added challenge, even though I am not the most skilled player. It's nice that each of the characters has their own unique attributes that make playing the game as them different and special.
I am actually quite scared of starting the harder modes as I don't know if I'll be able to do it, but this game makes me want to try. In previous games, I would've stayed away from harder difficulties, but this game makes it worthwhile. It makes you step out of your comfort zone to try and get all the achievements you can.
I would seriously recommend this game to anyone. Anyone at all. It doesn't matter if you don't usually like bullet hells - neither do I. This game has so much content and it isn't even finished. I can't wait to see what else this game will offer in the future. The other modes I've unlocked so far are great too. Plenty to do.
Honestly, what a gem of a game. It's a little unusual, but in the best way, the battles are so beautiful I find myself often distracted while playing, both fun to play and fun to watch game play of imo. The story is quite lovely, as are the characters, and both the art and the soundtrack go very hard. Incidentally, I only found this game because of the art, if you like bullethell games definitely give this a look :3
