It is with a heavy heart that I must give this game a negative review. Even with all the cons I had with the game I still had a good time with it. But at this time, with the current state that the game is in, I can not recommend this game to anyone. I do hope that the devs come back to this game and fix the bugs in this game. Although I have little hope in that as they haven't touched this game since 2018.
Pros:
- Decent voice acting
- The visuals are fantastic!
- The music is great. I especially love the piano scores used in this game.
- Story is enough to keep you engaged!
- The variety in monsters and how they acted/looked were pretty cool.
Cons:
- Voice acting can be a little hard to understand. Especially in some of the collectable memories.
- The subtitles are delayed.
-Getting stuck on ledges and stairways. The only way I found to get around this was to spam the space bar. Also in the asylum I had trouble getting the character to go through doorways as he would get stuck.
- The same would go for hiding behind walls as it was either hit or miss as to whether the character would choose to hide behind it or not.
- Some areas were incredibly dark. So much so that I would get lost and miss the next area I was supposed to go.
- If you die or load into a save that was before you unlocked an area it will lock you out. This was my biggest gripe with the game as this happened twice to me. First time in the Valentine house when I loaded up a save prior to me unlocking the door to the Western Hall. I unfortunately got locked out as the game acted as if I was already beyond the door as the key had not spawned back in and the door was still locked. The only way I had found to get around this is to start a new game.
This happened a second time when in the Asylum. I had acquired the key to the reception and had managed to unlock the door. But unfortunately I died to the enemy roaming the hallway. When I spawned back in I was still in that same hallway but, yet again, the key hadn't spawned back in nor was it in my inventory. I was now stuck like I was back in the Valentine house, with the only option to restart the entire game again.
DON'T PLAY THIS GAME! I know it looks fun but its not! you think that because its an old game it would have less bugs and glitches it's not. It takes all your key items and it will make you start the game from the beginning at any point in the game. Even though it's a low graphic and low processor game the fps drop is a whole other level. Don't fall for the mixed review thing like I did. I was forgiving with the visual quality because the plot was what I'm after. Holy hell I regret it until the day I die.
This is not worth your time nor your money. The community of this game is dead and there is a reason why you can't find any walkthroughs or can only see intro playthroughs about this game. It sucks asssss.
Game is technically has issue & horrible performance and also very irritating colors that blind eyes , i'd like to request a refund

WOW. What an incredible game. I highly enjoyed it. Played for almost nine hours in one sitting and had a ton of fun. That said, the game is partially broken. There were some bugs where you could walk through things and a particular monster would get occasionally stuck; respawning in odd places etc. There were also extremely dark areas where you couldn't see anything and had to trial and error. If you can grin and bear through that, then give this a try. The game is visually stunning, has a great soundtrack and there is so much to do in it. The story is extremely detailed and engaging and every challenge is different which makes it so fun. A little bit of puzzle, some combat and a lot of stealth. The end portion challenge was my favorite! PS: Not to mention, the game also got me through the day of this boring ass covid quarantine :)
This Game SEEMED TO HAVE a great storyline, which I was thoroughly enjoying... However, one major glitch caused my game to block me from progressing in the Mansion which the developer was so kind in helping me with by sending me a new file to help me progress, but I lost all my own collectible stuff with that file. Once progressed, and getting to another part of the game, (Graveyard and Regrets), the FPS dropped to 5 and the game was so choppy it became unplayable. I really enjoyed this game, and hope to finish it at some point in the future. Maybe if the video options were added to adjust for Medium or Low graphics, instead of just Ultra High and High? Or give players the options of turning off particles in the options, especially since your requirements listed on Steam to be able to play the game are so low... My build is way higher than your minimum requirement, and this game IS the ONLY game I have issues playing... Hopefully there will be a future update to this game that will fix the issues I had... Unless you have a monster beast of computer to play games on with a monster beast GPU as well, buyer beware ...
I would love to play this game. It sounds great, but unfortunately I cant get past the title screen.

tl;dr character based mysterious search with harsh effects on the protagonists psyche shown by solving riddles while experiencing a beautiful noir atmosphere with cuts of creepy aesthetics
__________________________________________________________
Before the game even started I was pleasently greeted and easily drawn into the creepy dark atmosphere provided solely by soundtrack and the dusty looking piano.
For the most part the game is focused on the story revolving around John, which is at first completely unknown. Neither your history nor the situation you are in. The player is thrown into cold water and gradually finds out about the mess John and his mind are in! The story is intruiging and was scary enough to rile me up at times, though I'm not prone to panic.
Ingame the first three levels set up simple mechanics of running, hiding and dodging obstacles, which second the core gameplay of solving riddles. Just a bit annoying that the view narrows when you crouch ... but thats probably intended :P
Additionally a set of "lanternheaded" sentinels hinder you in your search for crucial objects and clues by a damaging gaze. The leveldesign is balanced out, so I never had much difficulty to stay out of sight or dodge in a clinch.
On the other hand progressing through the levels was a bit tricky, because a few necessary items for solving the riddles were hard to find I had to circle the levels a few times. But that didn't bother me much, for there are plenty collectables like memories or newspaper articles, that gave me a better outline of the story.
In general the gameplay can get slightly repetetive but the variety of riddles that build up in difficulty and some well placed quicktime events corraborate the tension.
The beautiful visuals, retro style props and cutscenes build up the proper dark and depressive mood only further.
Soundtrack and ambient audio fit perfectly to the noir mysterious thrill! Especially enjoyable for me in moments, it added to the creepy or psychological preassure. Less impressive is the voice acting, a bit bland but still engaging. Also hardly a point to blame for the price tag.
Last and least the graphics are provided by the unity engine, I suppose, and are high quality standard. I ran into some laggs involving the lightning while turning the camera directly towards lamps, so that might be an issue and there are a few wall glitches with the camera but nothing gamebreaking!
Overall a great buy 5/7, above average indie title! l8r
Hey there, I startet playing The Piano today and really like the setting and the atmosphere.
Its not an everyday mindless action game and you really get soaked into the atmo. Really like that.
The camera speed needs a little tuning but other then that i couldnt find any bugs.
Maybe I got a version where some of them are already fixed.
Absolutely a recommendation!
After you got thrown into the game without much information, you slowly but surely become interested into the Story and want to find out, what caused the mess you find yourself in. The atmosphere and voice acting are fitting and the comic cutscenes are pretty cool.
If you are searching for an unique Indiegame, that one could be for you.
Only played a little now, but i did enjoy this game. I really like the atmosphere and style. Audio is good as well, and the story is pretty interesting so far. I really think you should give it a try if you enjoy mystery/horror stories, since the price is pretty reasonable (especially during launch week)
Keep up the good work :)
So, i played for about an hour i guess and i gotta say, that it's a good game. Great atmosphere and good synchro as well as a well chosen soundtrack. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes mysterious stories and a chilling atmosphere.
This is more of a tech demo than an actual game. You wander around 3 levels of increasingly unfinished assets. Invisible shadow men, tons of invisible walls and a red key that CANNOT BE FOUND! That's right, I couldn't even finish the game, because on the third level I had to look for a red key, THERE WAS NO RED KEY, TRUST ME I LOOKED HARD!
Also, no piano in the game besides the intro screen. False advertising if you ask me.
STAY AWAY, DO NOT PURCHASE! A completely unfinished product.
(hint: using the summersault button to move everywhere makes the game slightly more fun)
There may be light spoilers in this review. I also have not yet completed the game but I have played about an hour and I wanted to put my thoughts in this preliminary review.
The Piano is a game I've looked forward to for some time. And, I have to say, it did not disappoint me. In the first hour I've already seen flashes of Sin City, The Matrix, Amadeus, Twin Peaks and more.
I'm going to go over what I've liked about the game so far and what I have not liked and you can decide for yourself whether or not this is something you would be interested in. At this preliminary stage, I would definitely recommend the game.
Pros:
1. Price. It's on discount during launch week so you pay about $7.49 USD and it's well worth that price already. I've done more in this game in one hour than I've done in games that cost 3 times as much.
2. Visual Style. This game has visual style in spades (although if color is your thing, you may not like it). There are "ghosts" and glitches and all manor of visual tricks in this game that I have really enjoyed from a player's perspective. It gives the game a unique style that I like.
3. Music. Of course a game called The Piano would have to have some decent music. It's not incredible but it is good and it fits with the game very well. My only complaint here is that there isn't MORE music.
4. Main Character's Voice. I've really enjoyed the voice actor that plays the main character. He has been very good so far and reminds me of Elijah Wood a lot. For an indie game, this character in particular has some very well done voice acting.
5. Saving. You save the game at Piano's - which I really like. It reminds me of Resident Evil's typewriter only for a game called The Piano, you'd have to use a Piano as a save point. It's only fitting!
6. Inception. There is at least one Alan Wake-style television show within the game and I really enjoyed it. I watched it twice because it was very interesting. If you find a TV in this game, definitely stick around for the show.
7. Sanity and Inventory. I love the sanity meter and the inventory items you can use to try to help make it better. It reminds me of Amnesia and not many games have used it (and used it well). This game does a very good job with the sanity meter. There's plenty of pills lying around to help you calm down so it hasn't been an issue for me.
8. Puzzles. One particular puzzle (light spoilers) involves traversing an area and finding numbers and notes that correspond to the Piano. Once you have found them all (it's best to write them down because I don't think the game remembers them for you) you then have to play them in the correct order at the piano to proceed. I really enjoyed this puzzle.
9. Collectibles. In this game, collectibles are not useless. In fact, I highly recommend that you seek them out because they actually help flesh out more of the story.
10. Investigating. Parts of the game allow you to investigate your surroundings for clues. Once you have all the clues, you can then make some basic deductions (similar to Sherlock but to a lesser extent).
Cons:
1. Stealth. This one may not be a sticking point for anyone else but I'm terrible at stealth and there are some stealth sequences here. I was able to get through them just fine but the way the character moves made stealth a little harder than it should have been.
2. Movement. The character's movement is not perfect. It's just slightly clunky (especially when crouched). I've come to expect that from indie games though and frankly, it's not bad. I just didn't care for it as much as I've liked the rest of the game.
3. QTE's. I'm not a fan of QTE's in general and this game does have a few. However, it actually does the QTE's quite well so this may not be a sticking point for you if you don't mind them. They aren't frequent and they aren't difficult.
4. Cab driver. I didn't care for the voice of the cab driver in the beginning. I'm not sure what it was about him but it didn't feel like the voice actor was really into the role. It sounded like he kind of just read his lines.
And that's it for now. Like I said, there really is a lot to like here for a game that's really not expensive and definitely had a lot of work and heart put into it. I've really enjoyed my time with it so far and I think you will too if you give it a chance. I'll update this review further when I've played some more of it.
The game is a bit rough in the current state.
While some horror elements exist,
and the story seems interesting enough to get involved in the narrative,
glitches and awkward pauses kind of ruin it for me.
First Impression Gameplay:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uYZXv6ue0E
Graphics are about PS3 quality. Levels are very simplistic, environments are not believable (at least the beginning stages). There are lots of clipping graphics and other visual issues (like entire buildings having see though textures, looking behind buildings to see through world, etc).
There is a cool cartoonish cutscence at one point.
Audio seems alright and there is voice acting which is about average.
Ambient noise is good from what I've seen so far.
Controls out of the box need tuning. Normal movement with wasd, crouch is control, and a tumbling evade maneuver is space bar. Mouse sensitivity was so low that I thought I wasn’t suppose to look left and right. Easily fixed through mouse sensitivity control in options. Not sure why it's set so low by default.
Weirdest thing about the game is the awkward stops and pauses. I understand that the game is trying to pace to set atmosphere, but there can be literally 30-50 seconds of pause between lines while you’re stuck sitting in a cutscence. It's excessive and brought me out of the experience.
I think the game could be saved if the dev puts some time into polishing and tidying up. Otherwise, it's a solid pass for $7.50
