It's ok. Not my favorite, a bit clunky, but still a nice way to use time.
First of all this is the first game where it had a semi-realistic depiction of a castle and its grounds, including a wine cellar, bakery, armoury, and stables. Add in an abandoned wing and a hedge maze, it made for quite a sprawling game! There are 57 distinct scenes (you can find a collectable in each one). Which sounds amazing but is also really difficult. I advise taking notes because when you have to juice a pomegranate you might forget about the wine press in the cellar you found hours ago :P. The story is entertaining, if a little cliche - everybody who has been murdered has died at the castle! - so... just leave? No. Ok. ;) But it was enjoyable. ^-^
as long as you can deal with the screen just doing dark in places and having to fully come out of the game and restart, its a great game, beautiful scenery as well
This game is hard and annoying to play. The locations are all over the place and you can't get there via map so you have to backtrack. Things are hard to see so you click randomly around, you'll spent forever looking for 1 thing then have to try and remember what location to use it in and where to find it.
Puzzles are a bit too simple, the pixel hunting is a bit too much, the open world actions are too straight forward and the hidden object scenes are disappointingly obvious. There are better hidden object games out there for you to try before this one. But maybe I'm just being cruel for the price.
The game was low-pressure, engaging, and very beautifully illustrated.
I realized early on to use the map and fast-travel using that... having to shlog from place to place manually, waiting for every location to load would be NOK (sometimes the quest items come in order requiring you to go from end to end of the map and back). Also the movement options onscreen become confusing, but map is clear. Also in the map are clues to which areas have unfinished activities, finds, or newly-available leads.
One of the puzzles toward the end stumped me, and I wish there were a hint for that; instead that option changes to "skip" during puzzles, which simply let's you skip the puzzle completely, so you never get the knack.
In all, it was well paced, and I enjoyed playing through.
Relaxing and yet challenging. Fun story line. Very engaging.
Exploring an old castle trying to find out what happened to your uncle. I didn't care for the story much and it keeps it to a minimum. I liked the atmosphere and the music was good. The gameplay is what you'd expect, with many (some tough) mini-games and HOG scenes. The user experience could be more polished, but it works fine. (minor annoyances like when you enter a new room, the music pauses for a second, or not all interactive elements change the cursor when you hover on them). Also there are no dialog voice-overs, I think they would elevate the experience a bit. The castle is huge and in some cases you need to backtrack far, but thankfully the map shows active rooms and you can teleport (yes even on expert mode). Overall it was decent and I enjoyed it just for the mood and gameplay. If you like HOG games this one is OK
Very good. Not without issues, unfortunately, but nothing that could ruin overall impression. The game has some great art - that's definitely the first thing you'll notice. Medieval castle, ruins, garden, streets - great view. Very beautiful. Next one - the music. Great as well. I'd like to mention specifically such compositions as Torment, Trance and Uninhabited 1.
There is a good variety of hidden object scenes and puzzle games. Difficuly of puzzles is rather different. Some of them are rather easy while others will require some planning. But what worth special mentioning - these puzzles are quite unique. At least for me. I played dozens of hidden object games and most of the puzzles presented here I have not seen anywhere else.
Story? It's alright. Typical story for games of such genre. Starts rather intriguing while ending is rather predictable. Nothing shocking and nothing disappointing. You've seen a lot of such stories before.
Now few words about cons. First of all, there is no voice acting. At all. You are just reading dialogs. For a HOG not that old that's... kinda unexpected. Next one - interface/controls. It has some issues which may cause certain inconveniences in the initial part of the game. For example, navigation may be confusing, because there is the same marker (arrow) to enter another location and, let's say, approach nearby table or activate HOG scene. Mini delays between dialogs which constantly steal few seconds even if you skip them. No way to skip mini-animations. Necessity to drag items in order to use them.
One more quasi-problem - there is a lot of backtracking. Did I say a lot? I meant a lo-o-o-ot. Move 5-7 locations ahead to find... 1 item. Now head 8-9 locations back to use it. Get one more item. Repeat. But as you can see, I called it quasi-problem, because there is very usefull map which allows you to fast travel anytime and anywhere. You will use it a lot. Ah, yeah, there is good diary as well, so don't worry, you won't miss any critical info.
Overall, even with all cons mentioned above - very good experience. Beautiful, atmospheric and relatively big for games of such genre. With hidden collectibles and additional bunch of hidden object scenes in extras section. Good addition to your HOGs collection.
I played tons of games like this, but this is the among the baddest ones.
Puzzles are stupidly difficult or take forever to try all combinations.
Map system sucks because moving around in it takes forever.
Hidden object games are all the same.
Cut scenes are just images posted after each other.
I dragged myself to the end.
100 % achievements is very hard on this game.
Achievement hunters. If you miss one of the 57 butterflies, you need to stop the game, delete your save, and start over, OR you should make backup saves along the way so you do not have to start over. Once you finish the game, you cannot use that character to replay. You will have to create a new character with 0 of the 57 butterflies found. Unfortunately, you cannot replay and find only the butterflies you missed, like all the other HO games I have played.
Early in my second playthrough, the game froze. Could still move mouse and zoom, but could not exit room or use hint. Restarting did not fix it. Had to create a third character!
Long HO game. Some of the puzzles are the hardest I have played in over 90 HO games. The english is mostly good, unlike many other HO games I have played.
It would be great if the graphics was a bit better and there was voice acting, but the game is overall good.
This game could have, should have been one of the best HOPA games out there, but instead its hobbled by some stupid user interface design decisions that creates problems every other HOPA solved a decade ago. If you suffer through learning how the developers force you to play, it's an enjoyable game well worth the price on sale.
- close-up screens don't auto-close
- back button is at top corner of screen instead of bottom / just above inventory
- can't click-to-clear text/dialogue
- can't click-to-skip mini animations
- have to drag objects to use them
- navigation arrows suck (same arrow for new location vs sub-section)
etc
I was going to open this review by emphasizing how little fun I'm having, but I honestly don't know if I can even gauge that, because the controls are so unforgivingly bad that it's stymied any possibility of fun. This game feels like it was made by a dev who's never played a hidden object game, because a lot of really basic control conventions are completely ignored. There's no single major thing for me to point to, just a lot of things that add up to a very big problem. For example, moving back to the last location you visited is usually done by clicking the bottom of the screen, and it's so standardized it's more a reflex than a deliberate action. This game, on the other hand, has an actual back button, which is permanently attached to the top-right corner. It sounds like a small and inconsequential change, but it's SO counter-intuitive that it's at least doubled my playing time, because anytime I try to go backward I automatically click the bottom of the screen, then realize yet again that that doesn't work, then click the actual back button. It gets old very quickly, and it really sours my experience because I feel like the game is working against me. I shouldn't have to fight this hard with a game in order to play it -- and that was just one example. Rest assured there are a mountain of other ways in which this game ignores HOG conventions.
So, yeah, I suppose it's possible that there WAS a fun game here, but I'm so frustrated with the controls that it's sucking any and all available fun out of the gameplay.

Final opinion (8/10):
I loved wandering around the castle and its grounds. I got lost in the maze twice because I was so busy looking at all the lovely touches. I really liked all the mini-puzzles, even the one I spent twenty minutes trying to solve before I gave up and hit skip (will retry next time I play the game). I enjoyed the story crumbs lightly sprinkled across my wanderings. But my favourite thing had to be the map. It was beautifully done and a delight to use. It even had zoom!!!
On the other hand, I hated the game mechanics. At one point I was doing a puzzle out in the graveyard annnd... two wrong clicks and I was back at the mansion (game did save my progress in the puzzle). Still do not know what happened. They are cumbersome and added a ridiculous amount of unnecessary work to my game play.
But overall, my experience was great and I recommend this game to anyone who likes dawdling through beautiful detailed scenery, winding adventure play and entertaining mini-puzzles.
Originally I though that this game would be fun and there are a lot of Achievements to get...however, I am not recommending this game based on the Effort it takes to move through the scenes. There is no flow in the story, you have to just to pages which do not seem to have any connection to the area which you are moving through. The first person character has no voice...everything is written and you have to remember to click the Forward button under her picture to continue, once she has 'said' something. Also ... you have to use the button in the top to move between scenes or exits and the objects you have to find is not always clearly visible - just an overall annoyance to play.
I was able to play this game but the sound didn't work. Now the game will no longer work. Every time I press play game nothing happens but my name coming up. I am really disappointed in the quality of this game and the fact I have had no supports or efforts in resolving this.
Forgotten Places: Regained Castle was a chore to slog through. Mostly because the controls were a bit of a nightmare. You have to manually drag an inventory item onto a precise hotspot to use it. Triggering certain chain reaction events in the game is random, which forces you to have to click around a lot hoping that a cannon will go off or a champagne bottle will pop. The hidden object scenes had some inconsistently sized hit boxes to the point where you could be clicking on something else in the scene but the item below it in the picture is what triggers. Finally, the story was not my cup of tea.
I bought Forgotten Places: Regained Castle as part of the Forgotten Places Collection bundle during the last sale. The scenery and artwork is gorgeous and they suit a hidden object game really well. The soundtrack is beautiful and fitting for the atmosphere. The non-HO puzzles were for the most part do-able, ranging from fairly easy to fairly difficult. The story was interesting enough, though there were some questionable plot holes (I'm wondering about the butler's role in all of it). Downsides were the lack of voice-acting for the dialogue and the very ending scene of the story just seemed lazy... These are just minor points though and did not detract from my overall enjoyment of this game. Would definitely recommend it for fans of the hidden object genre!
Short version: 59%
Under a dreadful layer of horrible controls lies a surprisingly enjoyable and enthusiastic hidden object game with amazing graphics and a challenging gameplay.
Long version:
The first thing anyone will notice about Forgotten Places: Regained Castle is that it looks gorgeous for a hidden object game of this price—especially if we consider that it manages to uphold this graphical quality for over 50 screens.
The low price still has to have some compromises, which in this case means the lack of voice acting and a painfully unimaginative story (our protagonist investigates an old castle that holds a spooky supernatural secret related to her late surrogate father).
The developers put a lot of heart and effort into making this game, that one is obvious. They went rather overboard with backtracking, but beyond that, we find a game with a surprisingly good difficulty curve in terms of puzzles and adventure game elements, albeit the hidden object scenes are consistently challenging.
There is one gigantic issue though: the controls and user interface are utterly terrible, and it takes quite the patience to combat them through the roughly three-hour playtime.
