Suprisingly challenging and some levels can be quite overwhelming, but good tunes and aestetic
works fine on deck
I love rhythm games, and I'd say I'm pretty good at all rhythm games I've played so far... There's one word I can use to describe how I feel about this one. Unique. The gameplay is unique in the way of world building, movement, and music. What else is unique is the fact that some levels are fun and readable. While others you get barely any time (maybe half a second or so) to react to a left/right that was in the background, which seemingly happen at random at times. I feel like some patterns wouldn't be so bad if there was just a little more telegraphing with the upcoming movements. Some levels have things leaning left to indicate left movements, or right for right movements, but when you have back to back left, rights.... It becomes very disorienting to tell what the next movement will be, especially when sometimes they are; offscreen until a second before you're supposed to hit them, behind another object to indicate a "double hit", or straight up on white background. Might I add that the inputs, on objects, are white... So when you get a level that suddenly the background turns white *how the **** are you supposed to read those without already knowing the pattern*...
Someone left a review before me and said "...Can be overwhelming at times, but hey, that's part of the fun right?" No, no it is not.
I beat the my first full run, and the only time I had to restart was because of the final level (Which wasn't shocking, but the erratic almost unreadable left/rights were). The only reason why I'm leaving a negative review, is because for a casual rhythm gamer this will be hell for you. But If you're a seasoned rhythm gamer and want a challenge, and think you can tell what directional input will happen next, good luck, you'll need it.
TLDR: Very cool visually, very not fun mechanically later. Also the streetlights are cool.
It's a fun game. If you can look past the performance issues, I'd say grab it.
Overpass is a pretty unique rhythm game in terms of gameplay; one that can get a bit overwhelming at times. But, hey, that's part of the fun, right? The game seems to want you to play with a controller since it uses controller scheme by default, so heads up for that.
The editor seems pretty intuitive - I still have yet to fully delve into it and make my own custom maps. However, from what I've played of community maps, you can do quite a bit with it. It's a shame the community is mostly inactive nowadays - I'd love to see what crazy things people would do with it nowadays.
The performance issues near the final levels of the "Discovery" mode (basically the campaign) are straight up horrendous at times. Very noticeable slowdowns that affected my timing. The game also loves to bombard you with a million different objects at once, making it incredibly hard to register anything. Recommendation: go into accessibility settings and set "Object Density" to "LOW." It'll put an annoying icon on your HUD, but such is life.
Overall, I do recommend the game; maybe you won't have the same issues as me. I don't see anyone else bringing the performance issues up, so maybe it's just something wack with my setup.
I like this game. The visuals are vivid, the rhythm implementation is amazing, and everything is just so perfectly done!
One of the most underrated Rhythm game of all time!
