A nice, short game to pass the time, with nothing particularly noteworthy about it, excluding maybe the art style. Fans of Norse mythology might find something more attractive here, but for others, I'd say get it on a (small) discount if you need something to do for a couple hours.
"While Fimbul is only a game I'd recommend on a deep sale and struggles to find its identity with the combat mechanics, it still shows a bit of heart with unique comic storytelling and a decent story."
Fimbul is an interesting idea. I imagined it sounded even better on paper. Take a story and wrap it around comic storytelling where you play out most of the adventure and combat scenes in 3d. Where this game starts to completely fall apart however is in its core mechanics. I imagine this game won't be for many, and if the achievements are a telling story, then most people only played a bit of the first encounter and stopped. However, if you look at the trailer, the art style and the comic pages and it looks interesting to you and in addition you can accept that it is a short, probably 2 1/2 hr play through for you with only decent at best movement and fighting mechanics, this game might be for you at a low enough price drop/sale. I got it on sale at .99 cents USD and it was worth my time.
Pros
- The artwork and storytelling on the comic pages is very well done. The artist here did an amazing job.
- There is some good music within the game.
- I like the simplistic style the developers chose to go with for the models and animations.
- Personally speaking, I like the enviornment and some of the stories that are being told here about what is going on in the background.
- I think it has a pretty decent story that made me want to find out as many details as I could all the way up until the end.
- I enjoy the characters and setting.
- There are moments where you will choose options during the story. Based on the achievements, it appears that some of those, if not all made a difference in my story/ending.
- Shields and helms can be picked up and equipped quickly and can also break.
Cons
- The fighting mechanics are passable at best. They don't feel terrible but someone definitely wasn't listening to feedback about these as anyone who plays the game could give feedback that I'm sure would make the combat more enjoyable.
- Blocking works great, but you need to face the enemy. So.... there are no perfect blocks, and also if there are multiple enemies it is better to dodge or run away than attempt to block. This is what you'll do most of the game, unfortunately leaving blocking only for desperation. If the block system had been more thought out this fighting system would be way more interesting, especially considering shields can break and new ones can be picked up.
- There are 4 specials you can use by building up a combo meter but most of the time you'll always feel that one of them is best in your given situation making the combat feel limited in variety or attempting to try to make it look fancy.
- The camera angle is fixed so at times trees will block your vision. Luckily, most of the time this won't affect you aside from annoyance and it never got in the way of any of my fights.
- While having choices during certain sections of the story is a nice touch, I don't know if you can tell enough distinction in the choices you made in order to warrant a second playthrough.
- All dialogue is not spoken, so outside of some limited ambiance, sounds for combat and music, the game is overall a fairly quiet experience.
- There are only a handful of different enemies.
[*]The game is only about 2 1/2 hours long. However, at least it didn't outstay its welcome with both new things to show you and a story that stretched on too long.
Bugs
The only bug I experienced was not being able to get my Xbox One controller to work, despite it listing full controller support. I just went into Steam Controller settings and changed the default to mouse and keyboard and manually assigned my buttons so I could play with a controller. Even still, it was a disappointment that native controller support that was listed on the Steam Store page was non-functional for myself. Aside from the controller issue I ran into no other bugs or glitches within the game.
Conclusion
Do you like what you see in the trailer? Are you okay with only decent combat? Can you deal with a fixed camera? Are you okay with a shorter game? Are you a fan of this mythology? Do you like the art style? If so... I'd say at a very deep sale price you'll probably enjoy this game well enough. I'd DEFINTELY recommend against it at full price. I really appreciate what the developer, Zaxis was trying to do here and I wish them nothing but success with their future titles.

noice
I didn't have to play this one for long to feel the painful experience. Combat is extremely clunky and dull. The visuals and level design is bland and uninspiring. The comic type cut-scenes are a nice touch to a story that might be interesting, but without the game-play to complement, it's a big thumbs down from me.
I really wanted to like Fimbul. Was waiting since I originally read about it, I think a good few months or so before its release.
The game delivers pretty well on the narrative & Norse mythology. The comic book style delivery of the narrative isn’t necessarily something I’m into but it works. Unfortunately, everything else seems to fall flat.
The gameplay is interesting for the first 10 minutes, but then starts to drag on. An hour later and there doesn’t seem to be anything new, just some special skills that are fairly uninteresting, albeit it useful.
Combat is stale and repetitive. I did like that you could throw a spear to either break an enemy’s shield, knock them to the ground or kill them. But the nature of the enemies surrounding you doesn’t leave much room for it to be a regular thing. This is also an issue in and of itself. Too many enemies surround you and often attack you midway through your attacks with no ability for you to cancel out. This can be considered part of the challenge but in a modern era where fluidity in combat is (or should be) the norm, it’s a fairly jarring & annoying experience.
There are boss fights that are fairly underwhelming and because of the limited combat, it introduces nothing exciting. It’s pretty much just the same combat & mechanics, but the boss is a spongier & stronger version of the lesser enemies.
Visually the game doesn’t do much, it’s okay & appealing but the animations, often during cutscenes, are embarrassingly mediocre. The best way to describe it; the character looks like they’re doing a fake walk during cutscenes.
The camera system is also annoying. It feels almost like tank controls, especially when moving around in some buildings. But worse off, the camera is fixed in different positions in different scenes or areas. It makes it fairly difficult to navigate some of the areas & further increase frustrating during combat.
I couldn’t really stomach much more of it hence the reason I had to stop my playthrough short. I could finish it given that the game isn’t too hard but excitement the game invokes is non-existent. I’m lucky I only paid about $6AU for it and while I don’t regret it, I’m not satisfied with it either. I want to recommend this game but I can’t. If I could give it a neutral review I would but since I’m more doubtful than sure people would enjoy it, I can only give it a negative/thumbs down. There was a good effort made though, you can tell Zaxis didn’t just slap a few textures together, throw it on Steam & call it a day. But it’s sadly not enough to keep me playing.
If you like Norse mythology and you’re looking for a cheap game to fill some void of Norse games, then this should kind of fill it. It has a good narrative that would have probably been better off as an actual comic book rather than a game.
Awful graphics, lazy slow combat, buggy like crazy. Couldn't get past a fight an hour in because some guy fell into the ground. do not waste your time.
I enjoyed this game very much. I loved the graphic style which, albeit cartoony and to an extent minimilistic, drew me completely into the cold viking world it portrayed. The "normal" fighting against humans, whilst simplistic, was satisfying, although not overchallenging even when faced with large numbers of enemy. I would have welcomed a greater number of instances where I had to face off against enemy vikings.
I did not really enjoy the Boss fights which, in each case, just seemed to go on and on and on and could be very frustrating if you made a stupid mistake right near the end and had to redo the fight. They all seemed to involve running and rolling around in circles, inbetween throwing spears. However, I accept that that is the nature of Boss fights and that my aversion to them is just my particular foible.
I liked the story, which has a number of decisions to be made which you can revisit and try an alternative via the Lifeline; whether or not they add much varience to the story I don't know as I have to be honest, having completed the game on first run I wasn't immediately tempted to go back and redo alternatives. Though I probably will at a later date.
The game IS short as has been commented on by others; it took me 7 hours mainly because i'm useless at Boss fights. However, I thought the price was OK, possibly a bit high, but Developers do have to subsist in the real world so I don't begrudge the £15 pound I paid. It is the sort of game which, if you don't want to play anything "heavy" in an evening, you can just fire up and have a relaxing couple of hours.
The game too short like my brother's penis
Not a great game. Clunky fight mechanics. Clunky camera. Uninspired maps. Story is the best thing about it but the rest is meh. As a rating 4/10.
Be aware, if you purchase this game, it is not mouse run, certain keys are used. I could not find the key to get Fimbul to move forward, just roll.
Very nice game.
The comic book style is amazing, and the game has great atmosphere and story.
The control and combat taks a little while to get used to, but overall works well for the game.
It's not very long, but the price is fair for what you get.
I'd definitely like to see additional stories added for this game.
