Devil May Spy
It looks fun but I was unable to play it, visual glitches, black bars on the screen, it looks like it did not age well.. absolutely not worth the full price, only buy at a good discount at your own risk...
character action with a roxy lalonde type character couldnt be more awesome
Fair warning before anything else, this game can be janky at times
- Camera and lock-on system can be really annoying to work with
- Quite a few bugs and glitches. Ranging from weird visual bugs to ones that will force you to restart the game to continue
- Some enemies and bosses have questionable design choices
- There are also a few stages that can be pretty tedious at times due to design choices
The story is also pretty basic, with the humour being very hit-or-miss for the most part. Though I do think it gets better as you progress.
But if you can get past all of that, the game is a genuine blast to play
- Two playable characters. Both of them being super fun to learn and play, all the while feeling very distinct from each other
- Soundtrack slaps
- A lot of cool enemy designs to make you forget the few annoying ones
- Good amount of post-game content to sink your time into. One such thing being a pretty cool mechanic that is introduced right at the end, which can add a lot of replayability to the game for some people
The game is not perfect but considering this is basically made by one guy I can overlook a lot of the smaller issues compared to what the game does get right.
If you’re itching for a good Hack-N-Slash / Character Action Game sandbox to mess around in, the game is worth checking out. Well worth the price considering what you can get out of it.
Loving the game so far.
Underrated DMC-like game
Really fun short hack and slash. good for a sunday evening
Great action game! One of the best in the indie scene.
cia girl plays like ssj1 goku
Summary: The game is decent and might be worth trying when it's on sale. The controls are quite clunky for the movements, it doesn't exactly move or hit where i want it to, which can be frustrating for some people. The voice acting or story is just decent but the combat is good and cool, especially using the special abilities and mechanics. The visual and environment is quite bland or simple but it's still a fun game to try out, you could see the inspiration from dmc for level designs and combat.
Like Dmc, it feels satisfying trying to get combos along with the fast hits & dodges, but again for me, for some reason the movements are hard to control compared to dmc and the moves sometimes doesn't hit the target and just misses or pass/brushes through the target (even with target lock), even when turning it can be a bit janky or sloppy, it feels like the character can only move or hit straight in the direction it's facing with a delay, including the running, which feels a bit weird almost like a large truck unable to turn or brake fast, which messed the stealth part during my gameplay.
As the game progresses you get to upgrade your weapons and buy new skills sets which they become more powerful together as combos. I'd say the game feels a lot closer to zenless zone zero but requires more control rather than lock on and automatically hit the targets while spamming.
I could see the potential for a sequel if it's given a bigger budget. The story is quite entertaining and presented in a visual novel style most of the time for the dialogues, it can be funny at times. I'd say the voice acting is the main part that keeps me playing or not bored. For the enemies, there are different varieties of the same enemies equipped with different weapons which also keeps the game entertaining and less repetitive.
update- the story was quite short but enjoyed it nonetheless. I think the game is quite re-playable and the harder difficulties are very challenging. There's also a second story mode played as a different protagonist called Amelia who also showed up a few times in the first story.
You've probably seen the other reviews by now and I've got nothing groundbreaking to say. It's a ton of fun and I would've paid 40 bucks if it meant whatever this dev worked on next got to be even better.
i could fix chidori i think
Amelia Hime-Sama
combat is janky
Solid time, great combat and the story is a fun and charming time. it's a budgeted title as some of the animations you can tell are a bit still but it focuses on what it does best the combat. the stages are essentially just going arena to arena but if this game were to get a sequel or a follow up there is alot of potential to improve what is done here! the stealth section while short wasn't fun tbh and the character movement when not in combat is a bit stiff. but yeah worth you time if you want a solid character action game!
Don't let the low budget fool you this is a CHARACTER ACTION character action game, well worth your time if youre a fan of DMC4 styled combat
Never was a game so slept on in all of history
This is really fun!
good game
I will be blunt first of all: This game is held back by its budget.
Enemy design can be alright to questionable. Animations can be jank at times. But aside from that, if you enjoy games like DMC, Bayonetta, if you can put this game's jank aside there really is a promising game here. I enjoyed my time with it. Although it is a shorter game, i can definetly see a lot of room to grow as a player with the Boss Rush mode and the Bloody Palace equivalent.
Really fun indie Devil May Cry
For being made by a single person, this game is decent. It has many flaws, redundant combat, button mashy game play, lack luster character designs and development. It is not that strong as a game. The fact that I flew through it in less than 2 hours says a lot about the single play content of it. From what I saw, I think having two characters but letting them go through the same exact levels is again, redundant. And the game could have very well benefited from extra run time, more unique ideas, and an overall of it's game play. But, with that being said, it is satisfying to use the ring mechanic, and the build-a-bear style of hack and slash combos will never not be enjoyable. I would rate this game neutral if I could, but it just has too many flaws.
makoto from persona 3 is a fucking spy, wonderful game.
I've heard about this game being a gem, as a relatively longtime fan of the so-called Character Action/Stylish Action genre and...I can't believe I actually waited this long to pick it up. I've got through Asaru's Normal story, and I am thoroughly impressed.
This is a must-play for anyone who is remotely interested in the action game genre, not just the high-octane Stylish Action subgenre. It's a very good example of an action design that is relatively straightforward to pick up, but contains a lot of possibility/variety ("depth" for those who may prefer that word) once a player decides to dig deeper.
It's a fun little addition to the character action genre, especially considering it was made by a solo dev. Admittedly there are some issues with enemy targeting as well as the visuals being rather boring and enemies becoming stale but for the current sale price of $3.99 USD it is definitely worth it, and honestly not too bad at the full pricetag of $19.99.
This game is sloppy as hell and I mean that mostly as a compliment.
Good game, great for 5 dollars :3
this game is epic
this is one of those 7/10 game you will either hate or love
performance is a bit rough on deck, but after some tweaking, it can work fine and i genuinely think this game is worth playing if you like passion projects
assault spy is a character action game and as such requires tight combat design. sadly when I compare this to other games in the same genre - which have more content at the same price - I fail to see the appeal here. it's a serviceable game that might have been an ok substitute during the 8th gen but nowadays? with so many superior options? it's hard to recommend.
with that said I'm a gameplay oriented guy. I can see past most limitations and enjoy most games with technical issues. with assault spy I noticed that full screen is bugged. so I had to revert to windowed mode and use an external app to remove borders. again this is not a big deal but considering it released in 2018 - and spent some time in early access - you would imagine they ironed out most kinks with their 1.0 release. alas it's what it is.
in the end I sincerely hope the devs don't give up and improve their sequel. for that I wish them godspeed and good luck in the future but it's a definitive no from me.
DMC + Kill la Kill
I just finished the first storyline on Normal and it's absurd how good the combat is so far with Asaru, I've been hearing great things about Amelia so looking forward to her as well.
I usually write reviews after either finishing most base content, after 8-ish hours, or after I quit the game if I didn't like it. But I just had to give this game a glowing recommendation coming from a DMC fan.
Some more detail. Initially, I thought that the timing-based moves of Asaru was gonna end up being a sort of "meta" way to play and just spamming JUST attack strings for maximum damage, but when I got the Umbrella everything changed and a whole layer of complexity just opened itself up as well as a whole layer of both combo potential and min-maxed damage combos. What I also like about it is the high-damage combos are usually both hard to pull off and cool as hell so I don't feel like I'm being "punished" with low damage for styling on enemies. Also, Assault Shotgun is just so funny to me for some reason.
---------------- 3 Hours Later -----------------
Amelia is GREAT, well designed character, maybe a little overhyped by the comments I've seen from others but still great nonetheless.
I also finished the "true ending" and it was glorious. To avoid spoiling I'll just say that it's worth playing through the Amelia campaign to get the "true ending" since this ending happens at the end of Amelia's Campaign.
For a bit more detail, I really loved how different Amelia and Asaru is and I can say that this felt like going from Dante to Nero. It's an odd comparison but complexity-wise, I think Amelia is akin to Nero and Asaru is Dante. But playstyle-wise it's hard to compare to DMC to be honest. Asaru has the breadth of options that Dante has and Vergil's JUST timings. Then there's Amelia with meter management akin to Vergil's concentration gauge and super moves, Dante's Royal Guard, and a somewhat small moveset akin to Nero.
Both characters are very well designed and fun to play with different playstyles while also both being hyper-aggressive which is the best of both worlds. I can't recommend this game enough for anyone that enjoys character action games. I will be completing the higher difficulties next.
Hmmm. frequent framedrops (low 20s) on Steam Deck. The story is pure comedy and the combat is simple yet it has variety. Clunky but i don't mind.
This is not a fun game.
game good
very good game, do combo, get big number, feel good
I think it is a great game with fascinating story and really interesting characters, It is an exceptional hack and slash and I can't believe it was made by only 1 guy. I hope you get to work on more games like this and make bigger projects in the future.
If you love hack and slash character action (DMC or Bayonetta) then you owe it to yourself to play this.
I never make reviews for games, but I felt like this one deserves it.
PROS:
- Menus are simple and easy to navigate, so getting back into the action is awesome.
- Being able to go into a Training at any time just by standing still then pressing the 'Select' button
- Attack Cancelling. Feel amazing to just cancel pretty much anything into anything.
- Constant action; I never had a moment of confusion jumping back into the story mode after a long break, because of it's linearity.
- On HARD WORK difficulty the bosses become a serious challenge because Normal felt so easy, a very good challenge for sure.
- The music is high energy, love it.
CONS:
- Controls are a bit hard to get used to, with Dashing being on the X button and primary attacking being Y, as well as later in the game it uses the Right Bumper, and I changed it to the Left Bumper but it stayed as 'RB'.
- The story modes is a bit short, even with the two characters you'd play through the same levels.
- Sometimes it feels empty or lifeless, almost like it's made from a template.
- Animations can be very stiff and or clunky.
[*]Dialogue voices are only in Japanese. (While not a big complaint, I like to listen than read)
If you're on Steam Deck, run it on Proton Experimental (so it doesn't crash in the shop menu)
Very Hesitant Recommendation Only For the Most Hardcore Character Action Game Fans
Assault Spy is an impressive technical feat being an independent action game coming from just one individual, essentially. If you are a hardcore fan of games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta or Hi-Fi Rush, you will probably get a lot out of this game. However, being a high skill ceiling action game developed by one person really does show its restrictions when it comes to production value and overall design
First of all the presentation of the game. I'm not going to tiptoe around it, the plot of this game sucks. The characters are extremely annoying, the voice acting is ear grating, and the setting is as dull as possible. An entire game set pretty much in a lifeless gray office building probably wasn't the best choice. Even with limited resources you could have probably come up with a better setting. The art direction overall is pretty lackluster and the sound work and design is disappointing. The sound mixing is quite amateurish given how many voice lines, sound effects, and music cues are happening all in the same composition all competing for the same spotlight. It's a pretty rough package overall.
What about the actual gameplay? Well you have two protagonists; Asaru, and an unlockable character named Amelia. Of the two playable characters, Amelia is far more fun to play as and I would honestly recommend that you just switch over to her as soon as you unlock her. Asaru has a lot of moves assigned to button holds and shoulder buttons which forced me to claw grip a lot of his playthrough. Amelia is far more fluid and feels like the character that the combat system was designed for.
How are the actual enemies though? The base game enemies are, and I really don't mean to be harsh by saying this, potentially the most boring foes I have ever dispatched in a video game. This whole game is about fighting rogue robots and the best they could come up with were walking touch tablets, sentient traffic cones, and fucking Roombas. Another frustrating thing about the enemies is that there is a mechanic where you can do a special takedown when you are behind an enemy... well here's a question I have for the developer, how do I know what the backside of a Roomba or a traffic cone looks like? The enemies also overwhelmingly are projectile based foes and it doesn't feel like you can effectively counter projectiles in this game. Most of your combos send enemies flying away putting them into projectile firing range which is pretty annoying and sprinting to them is ridiculously clunky. Your character just does not control well when you're sprinting around the environment you feel like you're constantly skating and overstepping in every direction possible.
Thankfully the bosses are pretty damn challenging and fun to fight, and when the game has enough interesting mini boss type enemies in one fight it does present some cool combat. Overall though while this is extremely impressive coming from just one developer I would strongly recommend waiting for a sale. Only pick this up if you are a die hard fan of character action games.
Nyoom tiny man go boing and kill evil robots!
Probably like 9/10, tbh. I like how MUCH is in this tiny package. I will say that this art style looks very AI inspired, though, if u catch my drift. i have no evidence of that, but otherwise I enjoy this a lot!
its so peak....

Awesome :)
Weebs May Cry
cool STORY AND COOL GAMEPLAY
10\10
Just like what the other reviews say, if you are a DMC/Character Action fan, you will LOVE this game. The game is not a looker, but the gameplay is amazing and it animates surprisingly well. The combat feels snappy and responsive, but there is also real juicy hit stop/impact frames on some of the bigger moves. If you've played DMC before, there will be a lot of moves that will feel familiar. Overall, huge recommend for anyone who likes DMC or Character Action games in general.
If Devil May Cry and Bayonetta are Coke and Pepsi, Assault Spy is like a can of the store brand cola.
Cheap, small and good enough for you to not mind the quality.
The story starts a bit bland, but the midpoint is where the game gets interesting. The twist was actually pretty good.
Characters are fun, even though they are mostly common anime tropes.
The art is pretty good and character design is also good, although Asaru reminds me of the Persona 3 protag a bit too much.
Models are a bit simple, could use more detail, but its not something you will notice when the action starts. The walking animations are a bit silly though.
The game dificulty is average and its a bit short overall. I didn't get any progression stoppers aside one optional fight with Asaru that I kept retrying because if you get down to 1 health, it automatically continues the level and creates a checkpoint, forcing you to replay the level from start to try again.
Gameplay is pretty flashy, smooth and fun. I have some issues with the default control scheme that makes dash the X/Square button and punching the Y/Triangle button, but that can be easily changed.
You have two characters, Asaru and Amelia, her being unlocked midway through Asaru's chapter.
Asaru is a flashy character based on dodging, quick attacks and timed combos, where getting the right timing gives him attack boosts and different moves.
Amelia is a strong character based on unrelenting combos and big damage. She is actually far easier to play as due the block move being incredibly overpowered. The same optional fight with Asaru that made me retry a dozen times, I got it on my first try with Amelia.
No massive glitches. The most I were graphical ones like giant HUD elements, a duplicate Amelia if you taunt before the boss dies and a weird slowdown that happened after I killed an enemy and lasted for longer than it should.
There isn't much to talk about, but clearly a hidden gem on Steam. If you want a great hack-and-slash/spectacle fighter, this is a solid one.
devil may cry : no budget edition
Great game and good protagonists. Can't believe only one guy made this
