cant remove the game from my account cause it came with my purchase of the remaster.
also hate the low violence german version. this shouldnt exist.
Even though gameplay-wise it hasn't aged exactly well and it has some audio issues, the atmosphere is unique and the story has still held up greatly over 17 years.
(Oh and don't play the remaster of Bioshock 1, the graphical improvement isn't that noticeable and it is barely functional)
This has been the most buggies experiences of my gaming lifetime. The game is constantly feezing, crashing or having problems with audio or something else. I have been able to fix most of the problems but still my experience has not been enjoyable.
Its a really fun game remember playing it when i was younger i love the old fashioned feel for it and the steampunk tech to it.its all underwater which is always interesting.
Great game but original is no good on Steam Deck so go for remastered.
It's difficult. I'm not really good (or interested) in cover shooters, but Bioshock's world building makes it worth a play through.
The greatest self contained story and world in a single video game.
Not much to say about this that hasn't already been said. An absolute must-play for anyone interested in immersive story games. Even 17 years on (yikes), the opening few hours in Rapture remain probably the most impactful and memorable of any game I've played.
My all time favorite game, this version doesn't have things broken in it like the remaster does. As an example, such as the conveyor belts not spinning in some areas in the remaster. If you pick up this version be sure to look online for some of the fixes for the game because there are some horrendous game breaking bugs that make playing it frustrating. Especially look for the Field of View (FOV) third party fixes, I recommend Flawless Widescreen, but use your own discretion on how to fix that.
There are a ton of fun minute details sprinkled throughout the entire game and it was such a pleasure to discover them all. The game play is still a ton of fun. If you haven't played it before I highly recommend you give it a go.
I found this to be a great and fun game to play through. The game is challenging throughout and contains a couple of variety to the gameplay. Overall, it's a great game to play.
terrible pc port, awful ending, mediocre combat, thank yuo mr levine
It's a really fun game with a compelling storyline and amazing gameplay mechanics that is tied together with incredible art direction, If you want the game spoiled but funnily so, go watch bizlychannel's video about it. This game gets 7 bannana slugs out of 7 wrenches
Excellent game for someone who wants a quick storyline game, a real RPG game. It's a bit confusing at the start but eventually you understand it somewhat.
Overall Rating 6/10
Bought the trilogy which includes the remaster.
Just haven't got into the game.
The graphics are like a ps2 game.
the game isn't gripping.
maybe its the underwater setting just doesn't appeal to me.
clusterphobic
anyways other people recommend this game, by sheer note that I haven't played more than 30 minutes of the trilogy, i guess i can say i dont recommend this game.
poor graphics.
need to install on C drive to work properly.
slow starting game story
not gripping
feels like a slog to play.
not interested
again
dont recomemend in nowadays standards.
Truly a revolutionary video game. Only have one playthrough but it opened my eyes to so many other masterpieces that it was inspired by. Graphics and gameplay are timeless and the narrative leaves you thinking.
Absolutely marvellous work of Art !!! Love the perplexing attention to details !!! Amazing Sandbox Format that truly exceeds your imagination with the endless combinations of tools of trade !!! And above all, the wonderfully crafted STORY !!!
All in all, this title is an absolute necessity for experiencing the FPS genre in a new light !!!
The only complaint I have are those obnoxious hacking puzzles !!! Oh my goodness, do they break the immersion so horribly !!!
I love this game very much. It's so very fun with each floor gaining excitement and mystery. Just play it it's fun.
Played the original non-remastered version for extra performance and better aesthetics compared to the remaster and had a blast throughout my playthrough
Bioshock is an all time classic game, its got a great atmosphere and the voice acting is superb.
Its a must play for any enjoyer of the FPS genre.
I like playing the original over the HD remake but I believe both in in the bundle now.
A classic. Incredible when it came out, still fun to this day.
i love to kill the doctors
you can not only beat everyone in this game with a wrench, but the game as well!
Ah, BioShock. This 2007 cult classic is more than just a first-person shooter, it’s an immersive and unforgettable experience that has made video game history. Developed by Irrational Games and led by visionary Ken Levine, BioShock plunges us into the underwater city of Rapture, a dystopian utopia where the ideals of a free world without constraints have turned into a nightmare. Is it a timeless classic or an aging game that rests a little too much on its laurels? Let’s explore the depths of this masterpiece together and discover what really lies in the dark corners of Rapture.
Good points
Captivating and deep storyline: Heart of BioShock is its story. Inspired by the philosophy of Ayn Rand and the ideals of radical capitalism, the narrative explores the extreme consequences of a society where individualism and total freedom are pushed to their limits. The once beautiful and prosperous city of Rapture lies in ruins, consumed by greed, madness, and power struggles. Every street corner, every audio recording found, and every encounter with Rapture's strange characters adds layers of depth and mystery. You quickly find yourself drawn into this descent into hell, asking yourself existential and philosophical questions while fighting for your survival.
Unique and oppressive atmosphere: From the moment you descend into the elevator to Rapture, you feel a palpable tension. The flashing lights, the eerie shadows, the whispering voices of the Splicers... BioShock excels at creating a breathtaking atmosphere. The soundtrack is a mix of eerie orchestras and 50s tunes, adding a retro touch and a constant sense of unease. The graphics, while a little dated today, still contribute to the creepy and claustrophobic atmosphere of Rapture. The developers have masterfully used lighting, art deco decoration and sound effects to immerse you in this immersive universe.
Big Daddies and the Little Sisters: Big Daddies, these immense protectors in rusty spacesuits, are the emblem of BioShock. These encounters are often moments of pure terror and excitement. Armed with your courage and your Plasmids, each fight against a Big Daddy is a challenge, where strategy and survival mix. Then comes the moral decision: what to do with the Little Sister he was protecting? The mechanic of choosing between "save" or "harvest" adds an emotional and ethical dimension that marks the players.
Plasmids and the variety of gameplay: Plasmids are genetic modifications that grant you supernatural powers: electrocuting your enemies, throwing fireballs, or summoning swarms of insects. This mechanic introduces diversity to the gameplay, allowing players to customize their playstyle. BioShock encourages you to experiment and combine these powers with traditional weapons, making each fight unique and dynamic.
Bad points
Gameplay that can get repetitive: Despite the variety of Plasmids and weapons, BioShock sometimes suffers from a certain redundancy. Encounters can become mechanical, especially in the second half of the game where enemy types are more or less the same and new powers are few and far between. Some players may tire of the "explore-combat-collect items" pattern that structures the gameplay.
Choice mechanics that lack depth: While BioShock boasts of having important moral choices, these choices are actually quite limited and do not have as deep an impact as one might hope. The choice to save or harvest the Little Sisters is interesting, but it doesn't fundamentally affect the flow of the game, aside from the two different endings. This lack of real impact of the choices can disappoint players looking for depth in the consequences of their decisions.
Sometimes flawed AI: Enemy AI is not always up to par. Splicers can be unpredictable, but often in a bad way. It is not uncommon to see enemies get stuck in scenery or act inconsistently, spoiling the immersion and tension of the fights a little.
Some aging aspects: Although BioShock's graphics have aged well overall, some technical aspects are now dated. Animations can sometimes seem stiff, and textures sometimes lack finesse, especially when compared to more recent games. Thankfully, a remastered version has improved some of these elements, but it's still worth noting for modern gamers.
Summary
BioShock is a masterpiece for good reason. Its rich narrative, unique atmosphere, and ability to question the player on philosophical topics set it apart from most classic shooters. While it has some gameplay weaknesses and some technical aspects have aged, the experience remains captivating and memorable. Playing BioShock is diving into a reflection on society, power, and the limits of utopia. If you've never explored Rapture, it's time to take your courage in both hands and descend into the depths. Because once you're down, as Andrew Ryan so aptly puts it, you end up asking yourself only one question: Does a man have the right to choose?
95/100
good
*obsessively hacks every machine encountered, ramping up playtime by several hours*
a classic that you must play
A certified classic due to its incredible world building and mood, the game is unfortunately an unpolished masterpiece. While there is so much potential in the setting and the game's mechanics the execution of the >game< part of this game just isn't there. The game's audio engine is the worst offender. The sound is glitchy and poorly balanced. In gun fights the sound of your own gun cuts off as the buffer can't seem to handle what's going on. Firing a shotgun should feel powerful, oomphy. But somehow the audio is so off it leaves you wondering if you even fired your weapon. This constant interference with immersion and atmosphere leaves me with a mild headache and sickness.
While this is a real shame to be sure - the predecessor, System Shock 2, is actually awesome! The games of that era were much more manageable in their scope (I'm guessing) which leaves the experience feeling like much more of a balanced whole. If you haven't played it, afraid of its aged-ness, don't be! It's still a great experience, even for first time players (given you have some game experience, of course)
Not that this game isn't good by any means but the version steam has to offer is riddles with sound bugs ranging from audio issues in game during it's run time to sound completely cutting out forcing you to play in complete silence which ruins the immersion and enjoyment of the game. In addition to that there was a couple other issues like my dpi kept changing between levels and other weird abnormalities that made the overall experience hardly enjoyable. After 9 hours of game time I've given up trying to find a fix for the bugs and swapped over to the remastered version in hopes of a better play through. I suggest anyone reading this to just play the remastered instead.
This game is hands down one of my favourite games. The gameplay is that classic late 90's early 00's FPS style I grew up with and it is still one of the most powerful and disturbing stories I've ever experienced in a game. If you're a fan of horror/fps games that are similar to things like Doom and Dead Space then I think you will enjoy what Rapture has to offer you :)
This is one of the best game of all time such a great story. Game play is superb.
Reviewed for Steam Deck
Stability: 7/10
This game is listed as Playable and I agree although I ran into a few issues. The game crashed to desktop a few times during my playthrough. I also left the game idling on the pause screen and came back to find the audio "sped up" (so "Save and Exit" if you intend to be AFK for a while). Other than these, I encountered no other bugs during my playtime.
Gameplay: 9/10
This game features combat using a range of weapons and powers. In addition, each weapon has different ammunition and each power has different levels to it. This leads to a large variety of combinations the player can use during their playthrough. For instance, you can run-and-gun your way through using a machine gun and flame powers or you can be tactical by charming your foes and laying traps. There are many different enemies, some requiring different methods to efficiently defeat and keeping the player on their toes.
Playtime/Replayability: 8/10
The playtime of this game short to moderate (depending on the player it can be 8 hours or longer). Fully exploring the maps may add a few more hours of gameplay (ie: trying to find all the voice logs). The storyline is linear, so you can experience it all in one playthrough (excluding the voice logs). However, given the variety of gameplay styles, I can see this being replayed every so often.
Story/World: 8/10
If you aren't paying attention or collecting voice logs, the story of BioShock can be missed. Even if you are paying attention, it can be confusing at times. However, delving into the lore of Rapture and its inhabitants reveals an interesting plot full of social/political/economic themes and debate of freedom vs. order (as well as morality vs. power). The ending, albeit abrupt, is a great twist that was unexpected on my first playthrough. The world is novel, mixing 40s art style with futuristic technology in an underwater setting (not unlike "Fallout" but it seems to distance itself in a good way). The enemies are menacing and eerie, fitting well into the post-apocalyptic setting.
Audio/Visual 7/10
This game is quite dated, so don't expect stunning graphics. That being said, it ran at a stable 60 fps and I didn't encounter any graphical glitches in my playthrough. The sound design still holds up though. The various enemies (especially Big Daddies) inspire terror by just hearing them in the room. The voice acting from the main characters Andrew Ryan and Atlas are great. The soundtrack hits a mix or retro tunes to hold the setting and a theatrical score. Both are great and I recommend a listen even if you don't play the game.
Overall: 8/10
Even after all this time, this game still scratches an itch for horror-action gameplay. The gameplay, story, setting, and sound merit at least one playthrough (if not more). It's frequently on sale, so pick it up when you can. It's a valuable addition to anyone who enjoys a good story and a good scare.
Probably the worst port I've ever seen. It took like 30 minutes of changing the config file to make it playable. Even then sometimes it just crashes out of nowhere. Great game though.
Just play it on console.
"I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture." – With those words, I was drawn into the harrowing depths of one of the most psychologically intense games I’ve ever experienced. Bioshock is not just a game; it’s a terrifying descent into a world where ideals are taken to their nightmarish extremes—an undersea utopia twisted by mankind's hubris. This dystopian masterpiece grips your mind as tightly as its eerie corridors grip your soul. For me, it was an obsession, a slow descent that took literal years to conquer. Every spine-tingling encounter, every twisted figure haunting the hallways of Rapture, felt as though it chipped away at my sanity. And yet, I loved every moment of it.
Bioshock's horror isn't just the jump scares that I dread (and trust me, they still get me); it's how it reaches into your mind and twists it, revealing the darkest corners of human nature. The psychological depth is unnerving—how far can humanity pursue perfection before it shatters itself? Andrew Ryan, the self-styled visionary behind Rapture, believed in a world free from government, gods, and kings, but what unfolded was a society that tore itself apart from within. The ideals that promised a utopia became a grotesque reality.
This game repeatedly shows that reality. In theory, Rapture was a dream—the perfect society where the artist would not fear the censor and the scientist would not be bound by petty morality. But just like any ideology taken to the extreme, the dream curdles into a nightmare.
Take Dr. Steinman, the plastic surgeon who sought to break free from the constraints of beauty standards. Left unchecked, he spiralled into madness, mutilating his patients in search of “perfection.” His operating rooms are drenched in blood, twisted remnants of his attempts to carve humanity into something better—and that’s just one example of how ideals go awry when removed from all sense of morality. Or consider Sander Cohen, the artist who, in his desire for unrestricted creativity, turns his art into macabre displays of death, creating "masterpieces" by trapping his audience in statues of plastered corpses. What could have been artistic freedom is turned into something far more sinister and grotesque.
As I slowly made my way through the halls of this crumbling city, I found myself dreading each new revelation. The diaries scattered around Rapture are a testament to the broken dreams and twisted minds of those who once believed in this paradise. Every voice recording you find adds another layer of dread, like finding a piece of a shattered mirror that reflects the monstrous reality of what Rapture truly is. There’s a sinking feeling that no matter how hard you try to understand this world, you only scratch the surface of the madness lurking within.
And let's not forget the Big Daddies, those towering, armoured juggernauts whose heavy, mechanical breathing sends a chill down your spine every time you hear it. The game’s tension is palpable every time you see a Little Sister harvesting ADAM, knowing that a single wrong move could have you face-to-face with one of these terrifying protectors. Fighting them was not just a challenge—it was a nightmare. The feeling of dread every time you hear the low rumble of a Big Daddy in the distance... it's a reminder that in Rapture, you are never truly safe.
But for all the horror that Bioshock thrusts upon you, it’s also a philosophical exploration. The game poses some of the most chilling questions about free will, choice, and control. The infamous question that defines the heart of the story—Would you kindly?—pulls the rug out from under you, forcing you to question the very nature of your choices. Have you ever truly had control or been a pawn all along? The game forces you to confront the uncomfortable reality of how much autonomy we genuinely have when following the rules of someone else's world.
Ultimately, Bioshock teaches us that no matter how beautiful the dream is, it can be corrupted. When taken to their extremes, utopian ideas become a dystopia of horror, madness, and loss. Despite its grand promises, Rapture was always doomed to fail because perfection, as it turns out, is the most terrifying concept of all.
It took me forever to finish this game. Every step felt like it was weighed down with the fear of what would come next, every twisted revelation another crack in the fragile world I’d been piecing together in my mind. Yet even though I dreaded what lay behind each door, I couldn’t stop. I couldn't look away.
Bioshock will haunt me but in the best possible way.
Very Nice!!
i was shocked by how bio this game was
...
laugh
This one of my all time favorite games of all time. Great gameplay, art, level design and story telling.
Unplayable due to control issues on both windows and linux. Can't even get past the main menu on linux. Everyone I've talked to about this game says it's great, but I guess I'll never know if that's true.
my favourite game
a very good game with a plot twist that literally causes part of your soul to die lol
Pretty decent game albeit gets repetitive after a while with a bit of an abrupt ending.
Rating: 6.5/10
One damn good fps! buy this game!
This is one of my all time favorite games, it is fun, scary and action packed. 10/10 highly recommend
FUCKIN' AWESOME- First got into this game when epic had sold it as a freebie, but had a horrible time trying to get my computer to work with how epic worked it into my computer (which is already not so good with graphics and stuff, and decided to reinstall it here. I love the world and story behind this game <3
if you want to cry to sleep
The 1989 LucasArts Classic is BACK. While its a significant departure from the original Pipe Mania it still has that classic pipe based puzzle gameplay. Minus points for the weird, overly complicated first person shooter framing device and story, not what I come to pipe based puzzle games for. But overall it felt like I was playing Pipe Mania about 90% of the time so its still got it!
i want frank fontaine so badddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd
Felky Fun Meter
|----------|| [10/10] Massive fun!
A very good story taking place in an amazing environment with enough weapons and plasmids to make everyone happy, even me! :D
It's a great game but the port has aged terribly. Please patch this 2k I beg you
