What if Desktop Dungeons was also Mine Sweeper?

RDS ends up quite a bit leaner, with its 8x8 boards and no meta progression (outside of characters that you can rescue and lose right after). It keeps a looser leash on the player, early on at least -- where DD's levels can feel like math puzzles from the outset, RDS lets you "wing it" for much longer.

If you're deciding to pick this up today, you're probably getting it in the "Pre-Punkcake Bundle". And honestly it feels like something that should be part of the regular Punkcake. Would actually get sales and eyes on it that way.

lots of replay value

This game disappoints me very unexpectedly.

No guide, no upgrades, no new heroes. The goal is meaningless, to transfer some eggs down to the next dungeon, and it never ends.

If you want to play another game like Runestone Keeper, you are going to the wrong place. Just leave.

Awesome game overall. There is engaging gameplay, multiple play methods, interesting monsters, cute art and sound, and a riveting plot(no). Yeah, endless game by default, no final boss or something is a rather significant and unfortunate shortcoming of the game. But, it's a good time-waster nevertheless.

The game crashes more than Tracy Morgan, but it's sofa king addictive, and such a throwaway game, that it's almost hardly ever that big of a deal. I bought the game just over a week ago, and I've been playing it non-stop. It doesn't remind me of Minesweeper (as not all lvls are solved with balanced minesweeper rules), rather it reminds me of Treasure Crypt (but a little simpler)

No objectives. No progress. Just the same dungeon over and over again.

There is no NEW WAY of descending the dungeon. Or maybe it is. After 3 hours, I just didn't find it.

Not worth it.

I bought this because I love minesweeper and love seeing new variants on it but man, the core puzzle aspect of it just feels... wrong. I hated it so much that I put in my first-ever request for a refund on Steam. 700+ games and this is the first one that rubbed me the wrong enough way that I couldn't take it. Extremely disappointing.

Radical Dungeon Sweeper is such a chill game and keeps me entertained for hours. Two thumbs up!

While the mechanics are fun, they are ultimately somewhat shallow. Individual runs through the dungeon are fine enough, but there is no real goal besides going deeper. I would really have liked if there were some way to buy permanent upgrades with gold you keep when you escape. Also, the Minesweeper mechanics are functional but less than ideal. I would really like the ability to chord once you've marked monsters. The right click to flag sometimes takes a few tries as well.
The concept of this game is enough to keep me interested for a bit, but I hope that the game continues to improve.

Great logical game. Like a fun D&D version of Minesweeper. Could play for hours!

A fantastic game that blends puzzle, RPG and strategy elements. If you've played Minesweeper, you'll be off and running in this colorful dungeon overflowing with danger and treasure. In this sweeping puzzle, the mines are monsters and a bad click can send you tumbling into an ambush!

And you won't be able to solve most of these puzzle through logical deduction alone, so it's good that there's a host of items and abilities you'll find along the way. Your characters growth is paced well, with you unlock runestone slots as you go, allowing you learn abilities one-at-a-time and replace them if they aren't working for you. You'll develop a basic strategy for the character but the randomized items on each floor will force you to adapt that strategy on the fly.

If this game has a flaw, it's that the game runs out of tricks to throw at you after a while, around level 60 or so. So while the game keeps growing more difficult, in also becomes more monotonous and your eventual will likely be due to bad luck or a lazy click. Still, budgeting all the elements; your gold, time, health, items and abilities, constantly gives you little decisions to maximize your chances. Recommended for anyone with an interested in all three mashed-up genres.

I'm on the fence on this one.

The good :
- Very interesting take on Minesweeper.
- Overall interesting classes, upgrades and spells.
- Amazing art and UI.

The bad :
- High price tag for what the game has to offer.
- I absolutely hate the ''timer'' mechanic with the dark spirit attacking you.
- The biggest downside for me, there's very little satisfaction when a run ends and no progression system, no statistics. You can rescue new characters, but then they go to jail if they die.

This is too bad because without those downsides, this would have been a homerun for me.

Still a good purchase if you love puzzle roguelikes.

Worth a shot if you like minesweeper and RPG dungeon crawlers.

Pros:

* Great art; interesting and unique style.
* Novel game combining Minesweeper with an RPG dungeon crawl.
* Lots of replayability.

Cons:

* No progression. Would be good to have at least some stat-based achievements, or unlockables somehow.
* Lots of slow animated interludes (e.g. things swirling down to the next level) which get tedious after a while, and slow the gameplay unnecessarily.
* Bug which causes animations to start running even more slowly and the sound to become choppy. Requires a restart to resolve. I'm using Linux, which might be related.

I grew up playing Minesweeper since Windows 3.1, it's a fun little puzzle game that always had me going for "just one more". This game takes that basic idea and expands on it with roguelike elements and a fantasy dungeon-crawler theme, making it much more engaging and adding a feeling of progression as you try to fight your way deeper and deeper into the endless dungeon. The story is a bit silly, but it's not terribly prominent, and it's easy enough to ignore after the initial intro. The characters are all unique and encourage you to approach the game in different ways. It's really easy to jump in and out of, and right now it's my go-to game if I want to play something low-key but not completely mindless. My only complaint is that it would be nice if it had cloud saves.

Minesweeper with a fantasy RPG twist.

Yes, there is no real 'end' to this game. You're just supposed to keep going until death or until you choose to leave (which is a valid move considering that dying as anyone but the base character locks that character from being picked until they are 'rescued' during another run). I have mixed feelings about that mechanic, but it does force you to cycle through characters more often than you would (each supporting a different style of play), and gives you an additional goal which are admittedly lacking.

I do wish there were more goals here. But achievements do at least give you something to work towards during every run.

Really solid little pick-up-and-play with a lot of potential if they ever decide to do more with this concept.
Highly recommend picking it up on sale if you get a chance.

A very creatively implemented variation of the minesweeper. For me, this game became a great timekiller. There are a couple of bugs (empty cells still disappear when you exit to menu; sometimes after a new start, effects of enemy destruction continue to hang on the field; it can freeze once a week etc.), but not fatal for gameplay. I like the style of graphics, funny characters with their pro and cons. Every new start is a kind of challenge to collect the winner combination of runes to get as far as you can into the dungeon. Or rather to reach level 100-120 maximum, for further difficulty destroys all the fun.

Years ago, I ran across a very simple minesweeper with rpg elements on Kongregate and it was really enjoyable but it was lacking in depth and replayability. Ever since then, I've really wanted a minesweeper rpg game that was more fully realilzed.

Finally, years later (8 or 9 years, to be specific), I stumbled across this game and it looked like what I had been wanting. I was also hesitant, though, since there have been other games I ran across that talked about being a mashup of minesweeper and an rpg that always seemed to not do it well. But I had to know, so I bought it.

At the time of writing this review, I've put 36.9 hours into the game (owned for almost two weeks) and it does the mashup well.

There are multiple classes, each with a different playstyle. There are a variety of spells you can find which makes each run potentionally different simply based off the spells available to you. And it has a good difficulty curve - by that, I mean, the first ten floors are easy enough for people to get the hang of the game and then by the 20th floor, it's rough. I've made it to the 28th floor. So it gets proper roguelike hard and RNG is always a factor in .. well, most roguelikes, and it's no different here.

The game, for me, creates that "One more time..." urge when I die. So replayability is definitely there.

The one thing that I've seen people comment about, and I'll assume it's true for the sake of this review, is that the game doesnt't have an ending. Which, if true, there is one weird mechanic, since it only really makes sense if there is an 'ending' - where you find a relic and then are tasked with taking it with you to the next floor - and so on and so on. If the game is a high score chaser, then I don't know how the relic plays into things.

But that's not really a big issue for me. If you NEED an ending in a game, then a high score chaser that potentionally has no ending, might be a problem for you. Otherwise, I highly recommend if the idea of a roguelike minesweeper mashup sounds interesting.

While I'll admit I've only played a couple of sessions so far, I really like the devs take on the Minesweeper Roguelite gameplay. Yes, this has already be done with Dungelot and Runestone Keeper, to name a couple, but 1 subtle difference that is huge to me is that this game DOES NOT have the meta game grinding. When playing a cool highscore chaser, having a character that, over multiple play sessions, gets persistently more powerful with each run really distorts stuff. I really like that while this game has unlockable classes, each class will have consistent starting conditions so, if competing with friends it won't simply be a matter of whomever has built up their character the most will have a huge advantage.

Nicely realised minesweeper/dungeon crawler combination, with quirky cartoon visual style and clever game mechanics.

The dungeon is literally bottomless, which may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your tastes. There are also a bunch of different characters to unlock, each with different play styles, to add some variety.

Addictive stuff.

Really promising but ultimately dissatisfying.
The mechanics are fun (minesweeper + Dungelot). However, there is no goal. There is no progression, no unlocks, and no end. You just keep going until you die. You eventually find some rotting testicles (yep .. ) and "bring them deeper" -- they levitate down to the next floor. And that's it.
It's too bad because the game is pretty, interesting from a mechanical standpoint, and definitely could fit into this niche genre. But I have to pass.

Also, there are lots of spelling and grammar errors. The dev has said they intend to work on correcting them over time.
Finally, here is a game that really COULD have benefited from some community feedback through early access.

My problem is there is no way to really win the game.

And when you finally find his ghastly genitals, they levitate away.
Tell me, what incentive is there for chasing after a pair of runaway testicles?
I guess hemorrhoids just weren't disgusting enough.
