Fairly straightforward turn based RPG. Not too complex. I enjoyed the first 37 hours then reached level 20 and it felt like a bit of a slog towards the last few hours I played. It would be nice if the lower level monsters would flee from the party like other games I have played. It just makes for tedious and unnecessary battles since there is really no reason to grind after level 20. The attribute perks felt a bit underwhelming as increasing any stat didn't seem to have any affect on combat. I had a person with fairly maxed out defense and yet seemed to take damage comparable to someone with far less of a defense stat. The weapons that you can craft don't seem to make much difference either. The only thing that really helped was leveling up and once you reach level 20, well, there isn't much to do for character progression. The ability perks are nice. The revive after KO is extremely helpful.

The graphics are nice and fairly detailed. The lore isn't too deep and the story is interesting but nothing really new. The characters aren't fleshed out and there I didn't really connect with any one of them in particular. At least no one was overly annoying. It is too bad that most of the good unlocks come late in the game and some of them are unneeded by the time you get them.

All in all, I enjoyed most of it and would recommend if you like JRPG turn-based style games with not too complex gameplay.

A very generic JRPG with not a whole lot going for it. It seems like a valiant effort at creating a JRPG experience, but fails in most regards.

Visually, I am not a fan. I realize this is originally a 2016 game, but even then I would have considered these character models ugly and stiff. Sometimes the game's environments are pleasant to look at despite this, but the lack of enemy variety and very lackluster spell and ability animations don't help in this regard.

The combat UI is also needlessly complicated. Rather than giving us a simple ability list like JRPGs have done for ages, they opted for a four-way directional system. You have to press one of your controller's face buttons to select an ability, then press the same one again to confirm it. As a result, you can only see four abilities at a time. The game limits you to 8 per stance, but most characters can't even fill up these 8 slots, and the ones that can only do so because they get upgraded versions of the old ones (i.e. Fire vs Fire+). It's serviceable, but I don't understand why we had to reinvent a worse wheel.

Speaking of combat, there are a number of things I dislike. Many abilities are just the same thing in a different flavor. One character's main abilities are literally just different elements of essentially the same attack. Each character has two stances, but this frequently feels like a useless mechanic. To change stances, you have to give up an ENTIRE TURN to do so. While there is a talent you can use to reduce the time penalty of changing stances, it doesn't help enough to make it feel worth it. The healer, for example, has a standard healer stance and a buff stance. I barely used the buff stance because wasting two entire turns to change into it and then change back when I needed to heal was too dangerous to do in fights that actually mattered and the fights that didn't matter were too short to bother. If you played Sea of Stars and hated how few abilities were in the game, you will dislike Earthlock even more.

Character balance also seems terrible. There is one character whose intended role seems to be a tank and a support damage dealer. The only problem is her tank role is often completely useless in boss fights because bosses are taunt immune, which her entire tank stance revolves around. Even in standard fights her tank stance feels useless because it's counter attack based, but only works against physical attacks that come from grounded foes. If the foe uses an spell, ranged attack, or melee attacks while flying, she can't counterattack or the counterattack simply misses. In fact, the two "tank" characters are probably the worst in the game, offering terrible damage and very little ability to actually tank. One offers some decent buffs, but the game never seemed to require its use.

The best part about the game are its bosses, but they feel more like a puzzle you have to trial and error. You will encounter one shot mechanics that can only be solved by having a specific character in your party, sometimes with specific talents equipped. If you didn't bring that character, you're SOL and have to restart the fight.

If you've read other reviews, you've probably read about the game's quick travel system, which can be done through save points. I'll echo these sentiments that the warp system needed to be streamlined. In order to warp somewhere, you first have to warp back to your base then warp to the destination you want. I'm not sure why this extra step was needed.

Finally, the story and characters are so generic, they feel like the cliff notes of a fully fleshed out RPG. Hell, the "big bad" doesn't even reveal itself until the very end where its appearance and ultimate demise is over in the blink of an eye. Filled with tropes you have seen hundreds of times, Earthlock does little to stand out.

Save your money and time. There are TONS of JRPGs out there to play, and this one is not worth your time.

It's ok for a while, but it falls apart in the second half. There isn't much depth and even though its a shorter RPG (20ish hours) the lack of content drags it down, and what content there is gets repetitive quickly. Main quest is influenced from 90s and early 2000s RPGs but all the twists and turns have been done many times over, while side quests are mostly just collectathons. There's this rather tiresome side quest near the end of the game that is locked behind doing a bunch of resource gathering side quests 5 times before continuing it, and another step is locked behind doing the gardening which is just watering the plants forever until they level up it's so boring.

There's this UI oversight that is tiresome to deal with. When you need to warp you have to warp back to the base first, then you can warp to the other warp areas. This gets annoying as it just adds extra load screens and waste some time. I was planning on getting 100% in the game but I just lost interest, the added side quests aren't fun and the combat gets boring once you have nothing to level up (combat level caps at 20).

Earthlock does many things right. Just enough to slip by and pass itself off as a good game. However, there are mistakes, and they are quite noticeable.

Among them are repetitive and meaningless fights, especially once you reach level 20. If your chance to flee is guaranteed in these fights, why make them this hard to avoid entering in the first place? There's also the issue with the Warp Statues being a two-step journey and the farming being so attention-demanding, rather than a "plant and forget" system where your crops could have grow passively. Some of the menus and controls also take a bit of time to get used to.

That said, the game does have decent highlights. Most of the bosses are unique and have specific ways to counter them. The partners system and talent board are unique ways of allowing players to create their own builds. Though there are only 6 characters, each one has their specialties thanks to their stances. While swapping stances mid-combat does feel bad early into the game, this is solved later on due to a skill called Quickstep. The sidequests and puzzles don't take anything away. Sidequests can usually be completed just by playing the game, while most puzzles are pretty easy.

The aesthetic is pleasant. The plants especially help fill out the fantastical setting, while the different peoples of the world are unique to it. No Elves, Dwarves, or even Gnomes here. We have Octi Hammerheads, Droogo, and Hogbunnies. The premise of the setting is also quite refreshing, though maybe not explored enough. The planet has a synchronized orbit, meaning one side is in perpetual daytime and one side is in perpetual night. There's an interesting dynamic of magic, or "Amri" being in everything, including your characters.

Overall, if you're looking for something new and exciting to play, skip over Earthlock. There's nothing particularly fancy or riveting about it.

But if you're looking to sit back and relax, and play something not too tough while still playing through a more linear adventure, Earthlock is a great game to fill that niche. And I'm fully prepared to pick up the sequel.

As an RPG fan. There are baffling decisions on this game.

1. Max level 20 - Yes you get that right 9 hours and you are at max level. And its around 10-15 hours more for the end.
2. You cannot save on the Overworld. Really?
3. They have warp using the statues. But you cannot warp directly to statues. YOu need to warp to your base first then warp again to the destination.
4. Sidequests are locked behind artificial longevity. Wanna cure Benjo? collect 10x5 random plants as a part of other sidequest all over the Map. Side quests should be nested on its own instead they need you to finish someones else sidequest and its all BORING.
5. Scavenge, Harvest, and similar skills should be auto-swapped to characters except Taunt and Stealth.
6. They have this stupid "Stance" thing that makes everything slow unless you stick to one Stance.
7. Discounted Sphear Grid for skills.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME OR PLAY IT. ITS JUST A WASTE OF YOUR TIME.

Short review after 100% the game:

A fun indie jrpg with a decent lenght of playtime and a 3d turn based combat system. Would recommend to anyone who loves older jrpgs.

Pros:
- Beautifull world, areas, concept and worldbuilding very impressive for an indie title
- 6 characters with multiple stances and a limited (max 20 lv) stat and talent system which does offer some customatization
- Avoidable (most of the time) mobs in overworld and in indoor areas
- Okay amount of side quests (repeatable gather and hunt quests, some side missions and a secret super boss)
- Decent and fitting music
- Not many weapons (all are crafted), however weapons arent boring stat upgrade,s but more like sidegrades useful for specific instances which makes them less boring

Cons:
- Mayor con is very weak character development almost nonexistant, they talk a bit and joke around but not much else (this is evident in the case of Olia and PAT who barely have any story to go on)
- Average main story, problem is the story and pacing are conected very badly (almost skipping to next plot many times)
- Its a console port which makes the UI a bit clunky (battle camera and speed up resets for each battle, you use number keys to issue most commands and not for instance directional keys and t hen pressing enter or space, needs a bit of time to get used to)

In short pretty okay game from an indie developer which makes it the first one in a trilogy, so i am looking forward to Earthlock 2. If its on sale i would recommend buying it and suporting the developer which has shown some promise.
