Rocket Blasters Update
The game has been updated. The destructo beam did not seem to be working, so I was able to resolve that. However, it made me realize that the destructo beam was not available until a very late stage, because otherwise players would have noticed. I have moved up the upgrades in general, so you should be able to find more unique upgrades earlier in the game.
Faster Shooting
Also, I sped up the rocket's shooting ability. Now you can shoot about three times faster (three times more fun?) but be careful, you will still lose points for wasting bullets!About the Game
Rocket Blasters is a fast paced, action packed space themed shoot-em-up. Rack up points by destroying asteroids and enemies on your trip through the stars.Gameplay
There is nothing too deep going on here, blow up asteroids, enemy spaceships and occasional bosses in your very own super awesome rocket ship. Get a variety of upgraded weapons in order to help blow up more asteroids, enemy spaceships ... you get the idea. Find out if you have the right stuff to get on (and stay on) the Rocket Blasters Steam Leaderboards!Unique Scoring System
Rocket Blasters has a unique system that rewards precision and restraint while blowing stuff up. Each time you fire your weapon, you lose a point, that's right, you lose a point for shooting. However, each time you hit something, you will get 2 or more points back, depending on what you hit. Spamming bullets may be easier, but it will not get you the high score. Check your score on the Steam Global Leader Boards!
The Dread Pizza Armada in all its glory
Enemies
Asteroids are not the only obstacle your rocket will encounter along the way. The Dread Pizza Armada is planning an attack on Earth, and you must destroy as many of their drones as possible.Drones
You will encounter many of these dangerous robot ships on your journey. Avoid them, and their lasers, or suffer a painful demise. Shooting them will earn you more points than blasting asteroids, so thinking strategically about what you shoot will help you raise your score.
Pizza Armada Battleships
The Dread Pizza Armada was named after these oddly shaped triangular battleships. Be careful of lingering behind them, as they have a dangerous array of lasers aimed right at you!
Colossal Dreadnoughts
The Colossal Dreadnought is the rarest and most dangerous ship in the Armada. Huge and heavily armored, your rocket will have to be quick to avoid its dreaded Annihilation Beam, which destroys everything in its path, including asteroids, your rocket and even its own drones. Finding its weak spot will be key in overcoming this deadly foe.
Battling a Pizza Armada Dreadnought
Upgrades
Your rocket starts with a simple laser blaster, however, as you progress through the game, you may find some useful, temporary upgrades along the way. Look for the floating upgrade gear, and simply fly into it in order to upgrade your rocket. Upgrades have a time limit, indicated by the numbers that appear above your rocket on the screen.Triple Blasters
Two extra lasers allow you to clear a path through obstacles and enemies much more efficiently than the single cannon you start with.
Side Cannons
Side Cannons allow you to slip past enemies and dangers, while giving you the power to blast them out of space from the side. This allows for a very different, strategic approach when confronting enemies.
Energy Shield
The Energy Shield is a very powerful upgrade, making your rocket completely impervious to all dangers for a short time. Be careful of the timer though, it is quite inconvenient when you lose the shield in the middle of a battle.
Destructo Beam
Possibly the most effective offensive weapon in the universe, the Desructo Beam was actually a recovered Dreadnaught Annihilation Beam, which was re-engineered to fit on your rocket. Enjoy its destructive powers while they last!
Artwork
Rocket Blasters is the end result of a small series of ball-point pen drawings I did in October of 2017. The drawings were simple space themed images showing a small rocket ship, that developed into a story over the month long period. Someone suggested I animate the images, and I did one better and turned them into a game.An early drawing in the series

This was good, simple fun. changed the fire button though, not fond of having to click 'ctrl'
Overall it's good, but permadeath is not what I expect from this kind of games. And free level select is not making it more fun
Rocket Blasters is a simplistic 2D retro side scrolling bullet hell/shoot 'em up style game with a "pencil drawings on graph paper" high school schtick that looks very amusing and nostalgic for roughly 4-5 seconds total. Fly a "rocket" endlessly towards the right hand side of your screen and shoot stuff, accompanied by some kinda lame sound effects. That's all there is to this.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. To make matters worse, there's no mouse input, despite this being sold on PC as if it were a PC game. This is unacceptable and somewhat insulting to PC gamers. It's a good demonstration of the poor attitude the developer has towards PC gamers, and this attitude has resulted in yet another defect in this game.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs.
A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", Schmidt Workshops has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers.
The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2023 (and this was released not so far back in 2017), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Rocket Blasters is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
Im not a huge fan of high score games so i didn't play too much. but for what i have played it is a very fun game, and from what iv seen on the store page it looks like it has a lot to offer. for the price it is an amazing game :)
While the game becomes repetitive after ~15 minutes, it stays a great time killer - especially if you want to play a little shoot 'em up with unique graphics. Also, if you like the creator's ballpoint pen drawings (he often shares them on his different social media accounts), purchasing this gem is one nice way to support him.
nice
Its pretty obvious this is a home project but even so its a fun, rather sweet and actually quite addictive game. For less than £1 it really is a great price for something which provides some honest to goodness plain old fun.
In addition I can confirm the Linux version runs very well.
Good Games !
Especially good with Aphex Twin's music.
This game is great fun! For anyone who is into arcade style score chasers, this is a must have! At 1$, this is a total bargain. It is repetitive, but, somehow, that isn't really a negative with this game. It really works with it. It is light-hearted from the art style, to the music. Lots of fun and a good way to just jump into a game and unwind.
For a buck this game was a Blast..ers.
Love the quricky early flash esk game play and the pen hand drawn art look. Game was engaging enough to play and I will deffintly be keeping this installed if I want to play something simple I can watch a youtube video with.
Wasnt able to navigate the UI but I may just not be doing something wright as when I hit the arrow keys it forced me to play the game.
Other than that I can't say much for the value of the game.
BTW congrats on getting featured on the Co-Optional Pod Cast!
Would have paid 3 times as much for this.
The art style drew me in and the fact that this started out as Inktober ball-point pen doodles really made me take an interest.
If you like old shmups like r-type, apidya, project x, etc then you may find this worth a look.
The drawings were turned into this game and it could do with some more refining, bug fixing etc but the potential is there for sure.
Steam workshop would be great for players to draw their own ships and import them as mods etc.
As simple as this title is, sometimes simplicity is inspiring.
