Описание

Snail Trek - Chapter 1: Intershellar is the first in a series of "20 minute adventures" where you take on the role of a crew of snails on a journey to a new home world.

In the style of the early Sierra Online adventure games, Snail Trek has colorful EGA-ish graphics and a text parser interface. Relive the nostalgia in these bite-sized adventures - but without all the pain. Autosaves, a text parser with auto-suggest, and puzzles with no dead ends, all combine to bring this old genre into the modern era.

In Chapter 1, you arrive at the lettuce-covered (or so you hope) planet. But something is amiss. Your ship has been damaged and you may not be able to land at all! Meanwhile, your home world is dying, and your entire civilization is waiting for your report on this new planet. Is it really a lettuce-covered paradise?

You can find chapter 2 here.

Key Features
  • Autosaves - no need to save every few minutes (though you still can if you want).
  • A text parser with both auto-suggest and auto-correct - fat finger your way to puzzle glory (but you can turn them off if you want to suffer more greatly).
  • A text parser that understands what objects are in front of you, so you can be lazy and just type things like 'get' or 'look'.
  • CRT emulation mode that gives those pixels an ever-so-slightly fuzzy look.
  • A stereophonic score.
  • Cute snails.
  • Deaths (but hey, autosaves).
  • No dead ends! Puzzle your way around with impunity!
  • Widescreen aspect ratio, since monitors are more rectangular now.

The Snail Trek quadrilogy is one of very few adventure games made the last 10-15 years actually worth a damn. Good puzzles (this is almost unheard of these days) and good jokes (equally rare). A real breath of fresh air. Love it.

My review covers all episodes of the Snail Trek series! I already enjoyed playing the old Sierra games and Snail Trek continues the tradition with an improved text parser.

All four Snail Trek games are interconnected SCI (Sierra Creative Interpreter) episodes in which the protagonists are snails in search of a new planet for their species.

I won't go into detail about the story because I don't want to spoil anything. The episodes are short, exciting and with good puzzle design.

All episodes contain a certain number of achievements that are just waiting to be unlocked. This and the good humor invite you to replay.

My conclusion: Everyone should have played the complete series once in their life! I love the complete series!

A terrific bite sized throw-back adventure game with a surprisingly robust and advanced parser interface. I was initially put off by being thrown back into that style of gameplay, but quickly fell in love with just how well executed it was in this series. The gameplay is backed up with some solid writing, quality puzzle logic, and terrific EGA-esque spritework. This isn't like the games you used to play, it's what you remember in your rose-tinted memories of those games.

A wonderful simple game that takes me back to when 'building a PC' involved actually setting DMA/IRQ/IO switches via jumpers on the board you were installing and then telling the OS what DMA/IRQ/IO you were using (No PNP back then kids).. Younens with their lego sets that think placing a heat sink on a CPU with some paste and clicking colour coded modules into place and calling it 'building a pc' stay away. This is not your game.

The rest in the series are wonderful and refreshing as well.

Just. Why?

I downloaded this game. I played it F U L L Y. Bought the others.

It's... Infuriating. You need to use the exact correct words and way to say things, it can make you want to strangle the idiot mollusc. However, it's part of the fun. And this nonsensical game was hilarious.

If the title made you laugh, it's gonna be your kind of game. It's very silly. Once the mechanics chewed your soul up and spat it out after the first game, you're gonna want to know what happens next to these space molluscs.

This game is a great homage to the classic Sierra titles! It's a bonus if you love snails!

As it's free this can more be seen as a prologue/beginning for the full saga of Snail Trek, of which there are three more chapters.

I definitely recommend this little game and can't wait to finish the other chapters :)

I just loved this game to pieces! The typing interface was logical and made sense so there wasn't any "think of a way to re-word that" nonsense. The puzzles flowed while also being the perfect amount of challenging. The story was engaging and hilarious. Once you play this first episode, you will HAVE to play the others. I love this snail universe and so will you!

Very enjoyable start to a classic style point and click.. except it's not.. you don't even need to use the mouse at all.

Instead using the arrow keys to move your snail around, you type your commands into the pop-up text box and it works really well with auto-correct and suggested words as you type. It was also quite generous early on with hints and tips, which is (I'm assuming) only for the first chapter, because the chapter itself is quite short.

The logic works for the most part, except I got my first accidental death because it was oddly specific about what to do with one particular item and it was clear what I wanted to do, but none of the text I typed put the frigan watering can in the place I knew it needed to go.

Played through in about half an hour - which was just enough to really get into it and look into the second chapter. It has the beginnings of some cute humour, though I feel deeply bad for the ship's captain and what I did to her :/

I finished it with one point off the maximum attainable which I was quite happy about, but annoyed because I'm pretty sure that final point was something that I did before an accidental space-walk death and then didn't bother to do again because movement was quite slow and I just wanted to progress. Ah well.. I'll play through it again at some point for the anal achievement need.

Check it out if you like old style adventure games (Hugo's House of Horror's just popped into my head for some reason.. probably because of the similar controls/typing interface).

8/10, I wouldn’t have minded seeing this in Star Trek

Note:This is a split up review. All four games are covered as one article in Gao Li Occasionally Reviews

Captain’s Log, Stardate 47025.4. The Starship Enterprise and its crew have engaged a Borg vessel that has entered Federation space … Hang on, wrong franchise. In the deepest, darkest corners of the galaxy lives a species of lettuce eating, snail-like beings. Desperate for a new homeworld, one of their Slimex Explorer class spaceships searches the universe and goes where no snail has gone before. Their crew consists of Captain Elonia Mollusk, her First Officer Christian Snale, the Senior Botanist Shelley, and the Maintenance Officer Zoomer. Together they’ve arrived in the orbit of K2-91B, which they suspect is overgrown with the sorely missed lettuce. But before they can send out the lifesaving “All Green” signal home and start the mass evacuation process, they will have to land on the planet to take samples. Little do they know that their mission will soon get derailed.

“Snail Trek” (2017-2018) is a series of four brief adventure games by Philip Fortier, made in the style of 1980s Sierra On-Line titles. This means that instead of using a point & click interface (popularized by “Maniac Mansion” [1987]) that has become the genre standard, this series relies on a text parser. Players move the protagonists around using their keyboard’s arrow keys (←, ↑, →, ↓) and type out the commands that they want their hero or heroine to perform. In the past, this approach led to numerous issues; for one, the available space on any given game was limited, so if players wanted to “pick up” a watering can, for example, they had to use the exact wording the developer(s) of the entry utilized instead of a synonym. Furthermore, video games of the late 20th century did not feature spell checks, which added to player frustration.

As can be imagined, this makes “Snail Trek” a tough sell for anyone who has ever played any of these clunky titles. … Or so you’d think! Fortier did his best to trim down on the aggravating bits from the olden days and wisely equipped all chapters with an English autocorrect as well as autocomplete feature for all text inputs. The mouse too can be used, albeit in a highly limited way, like making the character move in a certain direction or selecting certain options. It is, however, rather cumbersome and players are advised to stick to their keyboard for these entries. Another welcome feature is that, even though there are Sierra-styled death scenes, the game doesn’t force anyone to restart the game completely, but simply drops the protagonist back into the room’s entrance afterwards. Even further, there are no dead ends, something LucasArts point & clicks popularized, so players will find the right solutions sooner or later.

Chapter 1: Intershellar
Players take on the role of Christian Snale (the yellow snail and first officer of the ship) as the crew arrives in planet K2-91B’s orbit. He is the first to wake up from cryostasis and discovers, to his detriment, that the crew’s captain, Elonia Mollusk, has been murdered. Even worse, the ship is low on fuel and cannot land on the planet’s surface to verify its habitability for the snail race.

This first chapter limits itself to two major puzzles: Fix the landing gear and refill the fuel tank. Having overseeable goals and a limited world made out of six rooms, makes the game an ideal learning experience for aspiring indie developers. Those who want to experience a “light version” of a text adventure (without any of the commitment or maddening irritation) should also give this one a try, as even newcomers to the genre can play through it in less than an hour.

Hey there. If you like my writing or my occasional interviews with developers, why not follow my Steam curation over at Gao’s Corner to keep up to date?

The Snail Trek series is well worth your time. On the surface it may just seem like a nostalgic throwback to old Sierra On-Line parser games of the late 80s/early 90s.

Not so. The text parser is perhaps the best that's ever been made. Taking inspiration from modern smartphones, the text parser here will autocorrect common spelling mistakes, auto-suggest words in the sentence, and auto-complete long words.

The story itself is endearing, charming, funny, and definitely more interesting than you would think a game about talking snails would be. If you have any love for the freedom of parser games -- or even just want to experience that freedom for the first time -- then Snail Trek is where you want to go.

Old-school adventure game with a traditionally silly theme. At least the Chapter 1 is neat, though short.

A blast from the past, Snail Trek uses an archaic typing controls from the adventure games of late 80s and early 90s. While you can move with arrows, any actions are taken with typing the command (e.g. "use mop" or "talk"). It's so old and clumsy it feels almost refreshing.

Yet it's not that clumsy after all, since the predictive text input hints at useful words, and... well, the game is not very long nor requires phrases that complex. But it's only Chapter 1.

Snails on a plane

Story is simple and silly: a race of snails are seeking a new home world on a suspected lettuce planet. You're one of the scout snails. But something has gone horribly wrong!

Since the story is only 1-hour long, let that suffice for the story. The setting is amusing and the narrative does offer some rough gems, though nothing comparable to the masters of the genre.

For instance, the typing interface allows for myriads of outcomes for various commands. But in my playthrough, I didn't find many gems when trying to attempt the silliest stuff. Maybe I'm just not that imaginative, but I expected more.

Some other notes

Music is fittingly over the top epic. Graphics are as given in screenshots - pixelated, faithful to its role models. There were no glitches or other bugs in my playthrough.

You can die during the playthrough (indeed, there's an achievement associated with the deaths) but the game helpfully "auto-saves" (lets you continue from the point before dying). You can also manually save, speed or slow the game down, and adjust sound and music volume.

The weirdest thing is that the game is restricted to windowed mode less than my native resolution (1920x1080). This might be awkward for high-res monitors.

Fun 1-hour experience

Chapter 1 hints at a potentially hilarious adventure to come, made by one person no less. Hopefully the other chapters offer a bit more complexity though (I'll update this review a bit after playing them in the near future).

I'm ashamed to admit that I had to consult the (excellent Steam) walkthrough to find the last missing point of score (yes, the game even uses the ancient game design rule: everything has to be scored). I beat this one in 1 hour, though if you know everything (or use the walkthrough), it'll only last for 15 minutes or so.

However, if you play it properly (without walkthrough), I find it well worth the €1 asking price, which is even less bundled.

Chapter 1/4 - just read the game's title, did it make you chuckle, even a little? After seeing all 4 chapters' names, I had a good feeling about the adventure to come and I was not disappointed. This "tap and type" (although, you can point and click in some cases too) game is very enjoyable and the text parser works quite well. Explore the scenes, but also explore the text parser - the tab-complete, auto-correction and up-arrow-for-prior-input are all a real nice touch. Funny and well worth the about 1 hour of entertainment it provides.

Agreed, 1 euro isn't a lot for a game, but less than 30 minutes of relaxed gameplay isn't enough either.
I'll recommend the game because it is really looking terrific and brings back lots of memories, but I really, really hope that parts 2-4 will give me a bit more gameplay time. Let's get them started!

If you're like me & miss the old Sierra style of adventure games and/or parser adventure games, this is right up your alley. It has some modern conveniences like autofill for the text parser, as well as being able to move via mouse. Fortunately, none of this takes away from the old school feel that Snail Trek captures. The graphics capture the old EGA style, and are quite reminiscent of Space Quest while still maintaining its own identity. The puzzles are simple, but effective. Very much enjoyed the game, especially for the price. Well recommended for anyone looking for a game of this style or want to try out a throwback adventure game.

Snail Trek is a really fun little 20 minute Sierra-like point and click adventure. The scenes, characters and dialog have been lovingly crafted to feel very much like one of those much-loved games. The best part of Snail Trek is the text interface which works amazingly well, and it very flexible.

To finish the whole game will just take about 20 minutes, as the description says. However to get all the achievements requires you think outside the box and do some searching.. That brought the play time up to about 45 minutes for me.

The puzzles aren't by any means hard. You can easily figure out how to complete the game and you don't have to think in convoluted crazy ways, like in some of the Lucasarts games "try everything on everything"... It's all pretty logical

Well I've now played 1 through 3, they are all excellent. It really harkens back to the era of Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest and the bunch. No moon logic here, all very rational and logical and funny. This was the shortest of the 3 so far, took me exactly 30 minutes from start to finish. Considering the entire 4 part series will only run you $4, and it would take you about 2 1/2 hours to complete I'd say it's worth it. I find it to be quite fun. Haven't seen a text sparser game in YEARS!

A cute little game where you play as a snail in outer space, but I'm sure you already knew that. It does exactly what it sets out to do, and has some fun along the way. It's advertised as a 20-minute adventure, but it took me 30 minutes, so I guess I'm not that smart. My only complaints are that you can't say check instead of look, and that it didn't last longer, but I suppose that's what chapters two and three are for. For only a dollar, you really can't go wrong, so go buy it!

I love these bite sized adventures, really hope to see a lot more in this style, I can't get enough of em! Great to have something like this when you find yourself with a spare 20 mins. The art and parser instantly transports me to how I felt playing parser games as a kid, and I find myself getting a lot more absorbed than I expected for such a short game about a race of snales in space. I think the parser/control scheme somehow lends itself more to that feeling of exploration and discovery that makes it very satisfying when you open up the next room, etc. Can't wait for more!

I consider myself a pretty accomplished reader, but I don't normally mix reading and gaming. That all changed with Snail Trek - Intershellar. This game's story is quite humorous, but it doesn't come on too strong. The author also cleverly worked some puzzles in between the paragraphs to keep players on their toes. I can't wait to see what happens next for our intrepid explorers!

Great game really felt like I was playing an Old Sierra Text Phaser adventure but a bit of moderness as to not make it too stressful. 10/10 Would recommend. Plus it's less than a buck so what's there to lose. Nothing that's what. "Curious tho since I bought chapter 1 do I get the next chapters for free or at the very least a discount?"
