Despite some frame-rate stutters, slight audio-visual desyncs, and the occasional bad texture rendering, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is eerie, challenging, thoughtful, compelling, and downright fun.
It's an impressive game, there's no lull in the entire story. It's full of emotions, with a constant fight inside Lara. The creators they have taken the evolution of the protagonist to a place which I particularly love. It's amazing how she's created her own path, how she has placed the foundations that make it and after all that, you can tell how easy it can be destroyed or how it tumbles to survive in her heart. World's fate is in Lara Croft's hands, and She looks so human, so sensitive and yet so dedicated and strong. All of these things make the shadows and the lights of the tomb raider, Lara Croft.
I give this game a overall score of 9/10
EN: How did you manage to have 2 different cloud saves on the SAME STEAM ACCOUNT?
1 cloud save for PC and 1 cloud save Steam deck. Fucking idiots.

I thought Rise of the Tomb Raider was fantastic enough but boy, this game is SO BEAUTIFUL. I'm an old crone who played Tomb Raider since PS1 release and after nearing 30 years later seeing Lara like this makes me so happy, so complete and so full. I wish there are a continuation story after this considering the Netflix series too, much love x
This is for those who like looking for hidden stuff in game map. So much of that. I absolutely do NOT like that. But I didn't know that before I played the game. The game itself may be fine, but it is not for me.
I won't necessarily say it's a bad game, it starts out strong with a lot of the collectibles and exploration that made the first (two) games great. But as you progress through it the game becomes increasingly chorelike, filled with bugs (in some regards inexcusably so) and the story both tiresome and exasperative.
I simply do not recommend getting this. And if you do, go in with LOW expectations and not paying more than a sales price for it.
this is a great game that i do not recommend buying simply because it is annoyingly buggy, from immersion breaking glitches to actual glitches softlocking forcing you to reset, or simply making you die. Get this on a console maybe idk
This is undoubtedly the worst game of the trilogy. Not only it till have plethora of bugs, not only mouse and keyboard controls are clunky ad it feels when you do those stupid fixed camera segments, though there are plenty of cases when this happens climbing and this suddenly rotates your controls and lead to you falling to your death, not only animations are reused where they should not be (i.e. when jumping from one ledge you are hanging upside down to another game treats like gravity has rotated its axis by 90 degrees and you fall parallel to horizon).
The absolute worst part is writing. Lara is written like an imbecile, constantly mucking things up and handing all important things to bad guys on a silver platter sometimes even begging them to take them.... Bad guys have omniscience and teleport constantly to correct places to receive all those freebies from Lara. Lara refusing to take guns from killed enemies and instead opting to go with just a knife, Lara killing a guy with a but of his rifle and throwing this rifle away just to proceed the fight with a bow.... Bad guys deciding to congregate and get killed offscreen for no reason. Yes, the same guys with earlier omniscience. And i could proceed with the list for next 5 pages. Writing is atrocious. both director and writers should never been allowed to touch the game.
And so the trilogy ends, not with a bang, nut with a whimper. Disappointing.
Looked like a great game, but it keeps crashing and now it refuses to load my saves for the second time.
This part draws players into meticulously crafted settings, where vivid, saturated colors bring the Latin American jungle to life, the reflections off marble catch the eye, and the vibrant Day of the Dead festivities pulse with atmospheric detail. Even within the familiar corridor design, each environment speaks to a dedicated artistry that encourages pauses for observation, if only to capture a scene in photomode.
The storyline, though largely familiar, offers glimpses into Lara’s motivations rooted in loss and resolve. Flashbacks serve as touchpoints to her past, and while they avoid overt sentimentality, they don’t entirely escape predictability. Core gameplay mechanics remain faithful to the series — campfire crafting, the essential climbing axe, bow, firearms, and knife are all here, competently refined without radical change.
Playing with a controller extends this immersion: each pulse of vibration subtly aligns with Lara’s heartbeat, creating a kind of sympathetic rhythm between player and protagonist. Added to my collection at a discount, Shadow of the Tomb Raider fits comfortably into the series — a visually striking, thoughtfully assembled chapter that invites exploration on its own, familiar terms.
I really don't want to play this game again
After playing TR2013 and Rise in prep for my first time playing this, MAN it REALLY feels outsourced.
The story was never really a strong suit in the last two games, but they were at least servicable; this game is obsessed with annoyingly long cutscenes filled with conversations composed entirely of expositing things that you really don't need to know. Heck, the game starts you off ultra-stupid with the inciting incident being so insanely absurd, that it entirely mismatches in tone with the last two games (despite supernatural elements being present in both).
The world feels both lacking in content, and so dense with explorable things that I can't get a gauge on whether I'm overwhelmed or underwhelmed; It often feels like everything in the game feels concentrated in one area (The Hidden City).
Some voice acting is really good, Jonah's actor KILLS IT in this game... but then the game will take Lara's obnoxious hints and play them over and over and over again until you turn off the dialogue and switch off subtitles. You can crank up the difficulty, but then you lose the survival instinct when searching for Survival Caches, Relics and Documents during Tomb exploration. In the end, you're either forced to listen to Lara remark on every single thing ever, or just have no additional direction for your own pace. It's either you get handheld to an obnoxious degree, or dropped off a cliff, no in-between.
One thing that truly upsets me to no end is how butchered the movement felt. Sometimes, Lara will grapple onto a hook so far up she'll get forced up into the air to cross a path, and other times, she'll not connect with something right in front of her face. If you hold one direction and jump, then switch to a new direction and jump, there's like a 1/6 chance that Lara will not register your direction change and just fling herself off a cliff in the direction of the last movement option. Sometimes, animations will cancel during a climb or grapple, and you'll plummet to your death for no reason. My personal favourite is when you grapple onto a craggy wall with your axe, and as you're climbing up, Lara decides that the rope is too weak (I guess) as it vanishes into thin air, resulting in a plummet to your death
Visual clarity is also a total mess with this game. There's this ugly piss filter that's present in basically every section of the game, and if not yellow, green. Normally, I'd be alright with it: it establishes atmosphere. Except, in this case, it makes being able to discern where you can actually climb infinitely harder. There were times where a puzzle was as simple as climbing a wall, and I had no idea I could climb the wall since the yellow textures on yellow filter blended together to an extent where I couldn't discern ANYTHING. There's so much clutter, and it all blends together into texture soup. I never struggled with discerning where to climb in any Tomb Raider game like this one.
I speculate that much of this crap comes from the game's outsourcing to Eidos while Crystal Dynamics worked on Avengers. This game certainly feels like it wasn't made by CD, even with the shared engine and assets. The narrative is boring and is paced horribly with the gameplay (something I never felt with the last two games); Features dropped from TR2013 to Rise return in this game only to be BARELY utilised (rope ascender is used to open like 3 doors in the whole game).
I truly, TRULY hate this game.
7/10
If you enjoyed the other games in the Survivor Trilogy, you’ll feel right at home in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. By taking inspiration from older games in the series, Shadow exceeds 2013 and Rise with its amazing setting to explore and a more capable & confident Lara Croft. However, it is severely dragged down by a lacking story and major pacing issues.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider goes on sale regularly and is well worth the discounted price.

Exploration
Shadow’s main setting, the Jungles of Peru, is by far its biggest strength. It's so rich with detail, with tons of animals scurrying around the lush foliage. Paired with amazing ambience sounds and an energetic soundtrack, Peru is one of the best locations to explore in the series.
The tombs in Shadow are another home run, each one contains an in depth puzzle, often wrapped in an exciting central theme. I particularly enjoyed the over the top spectacle of the DLC tombs, but the Cenote tomb was a personal favourite. There's still a variety of collectables beyond tombs, all of which enhance Lara’s abilities and make the jungle so exciting to navigate.
While it's a shame there's almost no new traversal upgrades, having all of your equipment early keeps environments open and encourages heading off the main path at your own leisure.
The one drawback of Shadow’s environments are its populated areas. These areas, while incredibly detailed, just aren’t as interesting to explore, and place annoying limitations on your weapons and outfits. Missions in these areas often involve a lot of wooden dialogue, and are never as captivating as exploring abandoned ruins.
Story
Unfortunately, most elements of Shadow’s story are underwhelming. Lara begins her adventure searching for “the box that can remake the world,” a vague Macguffin that lacks emotional investment. A horrible burden is placed on Lara, which the game fails to thoroughly explore, resulting in some bizarre whiplash that ruins the game's pivotal story scenes.
Our villain, Dr. Dominguez has very little time to develop an antagonistic relationship with Lara, and barely feels connected to the Trinity from the last game. The allies fare slightly better, but Lara and Dominguez’s relationships with the hidden city feel too simplistic. The DLC’s do a decent job fleshing these relationships out, but it's still not nearly enough to feel compelling.
The silver lining is Lara, who finally feels like the iconic Tomb Raider. It's great to see her solving riddles and courageously facing down villains. The game also gives Jonah time to shine and explores his friendship with Lara which I loved, as he is one of the strongest aspects of the Survivor games.
The thorough outfit and weapon customisation for Lara is great, it gives the player a personal flair and matches her equipment to the jungle setting. With such focus on Lara’s power, the gruesome death animations of the Survivor games are more dehumanising than ever. Doubling down on exploiting Lara’s pain for shock value definitely should’ve been avoided.
Combat
Shadow’s combat is surprisingly infrequent. This is great for fans who want to focus on the exploration and puzzles, but it's quite strange just how few fights there are, when most of the collectables involve upgrading Lara's arsenal and abilities.
Maybe Lara should’ve only had her bow for this adventure. There are several sections where you lose your firearms, or fight enemies that only have bows. There’s a clear focus on Lara’s stealth and craftiness that could’ve been pushed so much further.
When you do get the chance to fight, it feels pretty good! It’s very similar to the previous survivor games, but the new skills and ammo provide just enough exciting ways to take on enemies. The best all out gun fights are found in the DLC missions, although I would suggest avoiding the DLC guns, they are quite overpowered.
The best new feature is the enhanced stealth, Lara can now hide in foliage and cover herself in mud. It gives combat this “jungle predator” theme, which is a whole other flavour of fun, although the AI is far too easy to fool. I love how Lara feels like a tactical badass, but not quite the full on action hero she will soon become.
Final Thoughts
In Tomb Raider, I generally prefer the environments & Lara of the PS2 titles, but the gameplay loop of the survivor games. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, is a very good bridge between these two trilogies. Despite its many failings, it left me quite excited for the series’ future.
This game is barely worth it even on a 90% discount.
- Story makes no sense at all;
- Movement is janky and slow;
- Gunplay is just terrible and you can forget about stealthy bow and arrows headshots. Every enemy has more armor on their head than a WW2 tank to the point where even a maxed out rifle can't one-shot those;
- The DLC content is arduous at best and the items you get from the get-go are just overpowered;
All in all it has none of the charm the first of the reboot games had and none of the polish the second one did. It's a jumbled mess that only has graphical fidelity going for it.
Really like the graphics of this game also the special effects and music gives immersive experience while playing.
Beautiful looking game but suffers from a mediocre story. More of the same if you're already familiar with the other games in the trilogy.
If you purchase the definitive edition, it includes seven additional tombs in the DLC. You can access these tombs through side missions in the game or play them separately from the main menu. Completing the tombs through side missions adds some story to the DLC tombs.
my ratings - 8/10 (survived for environment and graphics🙂)
Really like the graphics of this game also the special effects and music gives immersive experience while playing. Puzzle and game play is the icing of the cake, overall great game!
i played the rise of tomb raider and i gotta say this is an amazing improved game! i love the animations, the gunplay and also the story of the game! the only troubles im facing is just how hard the puzzle is lmao and also, maybe turn off the aim assist to make it more fun to hit headshots! overall its a pretty decent game its worth my penny!
It is the weakest of the new trilogy. I felt the story was not great and i had to force myself to finish it. get this game on a sale. It also felt a bit grindy. Worth a sale but not as good as the first two.
Last time I played any Lara Croft series was from the PS1 days. Luckily this was interesting enough for me to complete it. Not amazing but not terrible. Easy enough 'puzzles' and a bit of combat.
Only criticism.. it was a bit short. But at least she was still rocking that awesome pony tail.
It's a bit lackluster with unnecessary features compared to the previous games of this series. Too many cutscenes, it feels like the controls are taken away from you every 10 minutes of gameplay. The maps are either too small (where you can basically only/jump across a few trees until you have to progress to a different area) or unnecessarily complex with too many levels and difficult to find your way around (Hidden City). The worst part are the puzzles where jumps seem absolutely possible (and actually work like 5% of the time) but you're not supposed to take them. But there are no(!) indicators to show that you have to find a workaround so you spend a lot of time (with a lot of frustration) trying to jump back and forth from platforms you were never supposed to reach in the first place.
While I like the aspect of having to learn a language in order to translate texts, I don't like having to run back to temples, levels etc just to translate a monolith you passed a long time ago, that just feels tedious and not rewarding at all.
Yeah dude i'd love to play an action adventure game where theres no action (and if there is its hilariously easy). and the adventure entirely occurs in long ass cutscenes, let me do the cool shit don't show me the characters doing cool shit.
Game is still buggy long after release. Not even 30 min in a new game and I encountered multiple bugs. eg. Events not triggering and Jaguars freezing in place.
Loved the first two. This one is a mess of audio bugs, horrible in game camera work that messes with aim and controls, general crappy controls especially in jumps and combat, etc. The story definitely has some good elements to it but also goes waaaaaay off the rails at other parts where I couldn't help but laugh at serious parts or just be confused or baffled at parts where I was supposed to be feeling something like awe or shock. Shocking how much this game regresses in terms of development from the first two.
-horrible UI
-non existent story (what did you expect from the people who make the same game over and over where you kill god)
-gameplay is repetitive
-the voice acting and dialogue is actually even worse than rise of the tomb raider...
i had way higher expectations for this given the attention it got because of it's graphics back when it came out, but it's just like Rise of the tomb raider with a few quality of life changes, i guess square enix did their whopper and left crystal dynamics to make their shitty avengers live service micro transaction game.
When the whole trilogy is being sold for 9 euros on steam, as well as given away for free on epic, i don't know why I still insisted playing it. Save your time for something else.
Beautiful looking game but suffers from a mediocre story. More of the same if you're already familiar with the other games in the trilogy.
Just WOW. I`m impressed how much worse this game is compared to the second Tomb Raider game... It is worse in every aspect of the game starting with inconsistent dull story, boring side quests, absolutely stupid talent and crafting tree that require farming loads of useless crap and HUGE amount of bugs
Buggy. First time the game loads Lara doesnt say a word. Have to quit the game and load again for sound
This happens every time. Why cant developer just fix the game
First thing i need to mention is that this game is not a bad product but it has serious problems that i can't recommended it.
This game suffers from lots of miss directions in balancing Combat and exploration and also not telling a interesting and grounded story, lack of Crystal Dynamics as lead developer and also lack of Rhianna Pratchett as a lead writer really shows SOTR short outcomes.
Warning: spoiler for ALL reboot Tomb Raider games
Pros:
1- Tomb challenges and side missions that got tomb sections are the strongest part of SOTR, they offer amazing amount of variety
2- Graphics and environment art design in this game is truly beautiful, there was lots of time that i couldn't stop myself using the photomode
3- Good PC port, i didn't really had bad performance issues
4- Hunting the animals for outfits and overall upgrades is rewarding
5- The 1 story mission playing lara croft when she is just a kid was really good
Cons:
1- This game is like 70% exploration with non-lethal gameplay and 30% Combat and getting into gunfights, just like i wrote earlier is not really balanced
2- Because of very little combat engagements using skill tree is pretty much pointless, why put your skill points in Warrior and Scavenger category when they have almost no use for you?
3- Having the option for natives to speak with their own language didn't executed properly, apparently they all can understand perfect english that Lara and Jonah speaking?
4- Most of side missions that don't have tomb sections are really boring and they always ending with "hey Lara thanks for your help i have this garbage that i'm not using anymore pls have it"
5- In TR 2013 and ROTR all the notes where narrated by different voice actors but SOTR all is narrated by Lara Croft
6- Most of side and main characters in SOTR don't have anything interesting about them, in Rise of Tomb Raider there was just 3 main characters (besides Lara and villains): Jonah your friend and Jacop The prophet and his daughter Sophia and all of them written 10 times better, even role of jonah in SOTR is really weird because there are times that it feels like writers constantly force him to be in this "Big Brother" relationship with Lara and there is nothing more in his character, like this guy survived all the insanity in ROTR after he and Lara where separated by avalanche but in this game we have climbing section that shows he's afraid of heights?
7- Villains story and their motivations in this game are a absolute comedy, early on we introduced to doctor Dominguez who is the head of Trinity and also rourke a military commander and second-in-command to Dominguez, now if you read some notes and listening to Trinity soldiers speaking you will learn that most of them are not loyal to Dominguez and there is a dual loyalty question in Trinity camp, however unlike ROTR Which Villains got their own cutscenes to better explain their motives SOTR explaining for villain motive is only from Lara perspective and answer is always "Trinity is bad". when progressing the story further we will finding out this twist that Dominguez is just a title name for head of Trinity and real name of Dominguez is amaru and beside Trinity he is also leader of Cult of Kukulkan and he just want to save Paititi and he is also a sympathetic villain and after that twist revealed i was basically couldn't take the story seriously anymore, like in ROTR Trinity goals where simple: control a supernatural power to rule the world, Ana wanted to cure her terminal illness and Konstantin was a religious fanatic freak but all those villains where written far better than Dominguez and rourke
8- Lara Croft character development in this game is absolutely shallow, like we still dealing with "trauma from dead parents" and "all the bad things happening is my fault" from ROTR, is like the events that happened in previous game didn't have any impact on her, what was the point of all of those talking with Jacob about Lara needs stop being selfish and obsessed about his father dead? Rhianna Pratchett wrote a really grounded and human story for Lara Croft in ROTR but in SOTR she comes of as unlikable, it feels emotionally she is still stuck in events of TR 2013, i know this thing i'm going to write is a taboo conversation in the community because of infamous Eidos Interactive marketing tactics for OG tomb raider games but maybe adding a love interest (in a mature and respectful way of course) could've helped her personality to grow more
This is such a terrible let-down from the previous two games. I don't know what happened, but A-Z, this IS NOT nearly as fun as the first two games, and honestly, I would skip it if you were a fan of those. This ends the franchise/trilogy on the lowest of low notes.
I don't recommend ever buying it at full price, only get it if it's discounted. Right now the entire series is £10 and it's well worth it for a price like that, even just for this game.
If you enjoyed the previous two games, I definitely recommend it.
If you only care about gameplay and aren't bothered about other aspects of the game, I recommend it.
However, I do not recommend it if you care about any of the following;
Compelling narrative or a believable story
Character growth or backstory
Immersion
Voice acting and dialogue
Puzzles that actually challenge you and engage your brain
Overall, it is a very fun game but it is not entirely a good game.
It's engaging enough that I played it with headphones and nothing on in the background but not engaging enough that I didn't skip every single dialogue that I could. It's also fun enough that I completed it to 100% on console and will again on PC.
It's like the previous two. Lots of running and jumping around, going through tombs and temples, solving very simple puzzles, occasionally fighting bad guys. Out of the three games, Shadow's story is the worst but the gameplay is by far the best and really makes up for its flaws.
Open combat is very boring, you shoot the guns and the baddies go ow and so on, it's just the same as every other shooter.
However, the game excels with its stealth gameplay. There are a lot of different mechanics just related to stealth and it makes it incredibly engaging and enjoyable. It is very well designed and even if you get caught you can return to stealth if you're smart.
Compared to the previous games, this introduces 3 main stealth mechanics - mud, vines and trees;
Mud - Within combat areas you can find puddles of mud, which Lara can use to cover herself in mud, making her much more difficult to detect and hiding her from thermal vision goggles which show up later in the game.
Vines - As well as being able to hide in bushes like in Rise, there are walls covered in vines that you can hide against and perform stealth kills from. There are also mud covered walls that will hide you if you are have mud camouflage.
Trees - Most areas have trees that you can climb up and shoot enemies from. You can also drop onto and kill enemies if they are close enough or, once you have the perk, do a special takedown where Lara shoots them with a rope arrows and pulls them up to the branch and hangs them there. There is an additional perk that lets her hide the body within the leaves for extra sneakiness.
Enemies will react to things around them similarly to the Batman Arkham games.
If you kill an enemy, another nearby will notice and investigate the last location they saw them and potentially find their body. If you're caught hiding in bushes, vine walls or trees or if someone spots a body hanging from a tree they will call it out and actively search for you in those places. If you're spotted while covered in mud they will warn each other that you're camouflaged and look much harder for you.
Later in the game some enemies will wear thermal vision goggles and search foliage more often and will spot you unless you're covered in mud.
Because of these things and a lot of things I didn't mention, stealth feels incredibly dynamic and interesting compared to any other action game. It's probably the best stealth game I've ever played.
The adventuring part of the gameplay is fine and the stealth gameplay is brilliant but there are a lot of problems with the game too.
Graphically, the game is beautiful. Unfortunately though there are times where the graphics glitch out massively. Lara's face goes black, her hair goes white, the lighting flickers like crazy, etc. I crashed quite early in the game too but only once so far.
Lara's facial expressions are exceptionally well animated and detailed, you can see her Adam's apple (or whatever the actual name for it is) when she breaths, coughs, speaks etc. You can even see her triceps flex when she pushes things which is insane. There are probably other small things that I haven't even noticed.
However, this level of detail goes well beyond a reasonable point - it's also part of her death animations.
For example, if you fall into a spike pit Lara will be impaled through the neck/head and her eyes will twitch in a very realistic way. The animation quality is incredible but the game is practically gore/torture porn because of it. Whoever animated all of her death scenes, across all three games but especially Shadow, was 100% getting off to it. It's actually quite disgusting how visceral some of them are.
Jonah, Dr Dominguez and Unuratu all have really good voice acting but every other character in the game, including Lara, is voiced incredibly badly.
Lara is voiced by an English woman but there are various words that she says with more of an American accent which I find really irritating. There are also times where it sounds like she had a cold or was pinching her nose as she spoke and it's just annoying how inconsistent her voice acting is.
It feels like all of Lara's lines were recorded in one session, separately to the other voice actors. There are several times where she or an NPC says something that just doesn't make sense in the context, and a few times she just says the same thing twice.
At some point Jonah says "Do what you gotta do" and Lara says "Thanks," obviously Jonah was supposed to say good luck or something but they changed it. There's also a part where Lara tells Jonah not to use the radio because Trinity are listening, then a few minutes later starts shouting down the radio asking him to respond.
Outside of cutscenes, NPCs have a serious case of Bioware face. The camera switches between Lara and the NPC as they each speak and their faces and movement are very awkward and stiff. The conversations themselves are extremely awkward and strangely put together as well, it's painful to listen to.
On top of that, there are about 5 different NPC character models in the entire game and like 3 voice actors (besides the ~6 main characters).
The writing is all over the place in general and it really ruins it.
There are several frustrating jumping/climbing parts where you need to have very specific timing and a lot of the time a jump seems much closer or further than it really is because of the camera angle.
I've lost count of the times I've died because Lara randomly slipped or bugged out and just didn't grab something as well.
Some things are just ridiculously unrealistic to the point of ruining it somewhat, and it's completely impossible to be fully immersed in the game.
At one point Lara has to infiltrate the enemy and she does this by wearing a disguise to blend in - except it doesn't hide her at all because all of them are men and are 1-2 feet taller than her so they should instantly realise she's an imposter. She also has to speak to some of them a few times so they should immediately know she's not one of them because of her accent - as well as the fact that she's a woman.
Another, Lara is shot at from every possible direction by an ATV, a helicopter and dozens of armed guards as she climbs a tower (while it literally explodes and is on fire) at roughly the pace of a snail yet miraculously she doesn't get hit by a single bullet or get burned.
Then she falls into some water and goes on a murder spree - it's a fun section but makes no sense for her as a character.
In the first game when Lara kills a man for the first time she literally cries but in this game she is absolutely psychotic. She's stabbing men in the throat without even batting an eye, she's stringing people up on tree branches and dragging people underwater before snapping their necks with her ice picks. She is an insane serial killer in this.
There's more to say about its flaws and there are some small things that bothered me but reviews are just too small for it all.
Several years after the game is released and there is a bug in the about 15% into the main campaign where pillars won't rotate on a puzzle. You're soft locked unless you know a workaround. For me changing graphics settings between ultra and high let me rotate them for a couple seconds. Extremely frustrating.
There is a bug where the puzzle doesn't work. It's a fun game, but I can't progress because of this... I think it needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Other people say it happens when the frame rate goes above 60hz, but I couldn't fix it, and it's really ironic that bugs appear when the specifications are higher...
Still a disappointing sequel. It was the best of the reboot trilogy, but the gameplay barely had upgrades, and still no dual pistols? It's still the same whiny Camilla Luddington performance sadly. The graphics are good though. Most of the environments are gorgous, as are the DLC outfits - except for the tribal ones, which they have milked for all they are worth. All in all, I would recommend players just go play Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld if they want a modern Lara that still looks good on modern computers.
Just got into the game and I am already mad. Who ever thought it was a good idea to reset your progress on deaths is a moron. In a game where you should be exploring this is a major drawback. Imagine playing for an hour on a section because you wanted to collect everything. Then dying on climbing section where you need to climb down and the stupid character bugs when catching the ledge. Your whole hour gets deleted. All of the progress you made in the mean time gets erased. Seriously need to play perfectly all the time and prioritize saving as often as possible makes it tedious to play. I do not recommend this.
This game was released when?? 2018? and yet there's a bug that prevents me from completing the campaign THE MAIN CAMPAIGN.
Just played a few days ago and got to the pillar part in Kuwaq Yaku.
Very beautiful game and immersion but extremely buggy.
How has the game breaking bug not been fixed when multiple and countless people are still experiencing this bug IN Q4 2024??
First playthrough review time.
This is the final part of the trilogy, and if you like the previous two Tomb Raider games, you're likely to find this installment appealing. The graphics are nice, the environments are engaging, and the gameplay introduces a few new features.
If you purchase the definitive edition, it includes seven additional tombs in the DLC. You can access these tombs through side missions in the game or play them separately from the main menu. Completing the tombs through side missions adds some story to the DLC tombs.
Overall, Shadow of the Tomb Raider features a good plot, nice graphics, and engaging exploration.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider has to be the absolute worst in the Tomb Raider trilogy, sure the graphics are perfect and the mechanics are fine but for some reason they changed the key binds around from the last game. Story is so incredibly mid i don't even want to finish the game, I've genuinely not been so bored ever before, The Characters just feel flawed and Lara doesn't feel the same as she did in the last 2 games, This game feels like it was rushed or they ran out of ideas for the story.
If you want to play this game to finish the trilogy/because you like tomb raider in general go ahead, but if you want a game to play that has a good story and doesn't feel boring then i suggest you go play Rise of the Tomb Raider, or Tomb Raider
Different yet similar to Rise of Tomb Raider with great new story and a few new game mechanics.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition - The Darkest Journey Yet
Overall Rating: ★★★★☆
Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, developed by Eidos-Montréal, brings a satisfying conclusion to Lara Croft’s origin story, wrapping up the trilogy with an adventure that is darker, more introspective, and more challenging. This game pushes Lara to her limits as she confronts both external dangers and internal struggles, adding layers to her character.
Story: ★★★★☆
This entry sees Lara racing against the shadowy Trinity organization through Central American jungles to stop a Mayan apocalypse she inadvertently triggered. The narrative dives into Lara’s motivations and vulnerabilities, highlighting her growth as she learns to understand the consequences of her actions. The darker themes provide a fresh perspective, though the pacing can feel uneven at times. The ending offers a thoughtful close to her journey.
Gameplay: ★★★★☆
Gameplay focuses on three main aspects: exploration, combat, and puzzles. In this installment, there’s a noticeable emphasis on stealth, with Lara able to camouflage herself with mud and use the dense jungle to her advantage. This shift to stealth is refreshing and suits the survivalist tone. The combat itself can sometimes feel repetitive, but the added mechanics like swimming and climbing open up new strategies and pathways.
Visuals: ★★★★★
The game’s visuals are breathtaking. The lush, dense jungles, underwater caverns, and detailed Mayan and Incan ruins are all brought to life with stunning realism. Dynamic weather effects, lighting, and shadows create a beautifully immersive atmosphere. The Definitive Edition also includes enhanced graphics, making it one of the most visually appealing entries in the series.
Soundtrack & Audio: ★★★★☆
The soundtrack, composed by Brian D’Oliveira, captures the haunting, suspenseful tone of the jungle environment. The music is a mix of traditional instruments and ambient soundscapes, adding depth to the atmosphere. Camilla Luddington once again delivers a strong performance as Lara, bringing emotional intensity to the role. The ambient sounds of the jungle—the chirping of birds, distant animal calls, and the sound of water—enrich the immersive experience.
Exploration & Puzzle-Solving: ★★★★★
This game emphasizes puzzle-solving more than its predecessors, with complex tombs and crypts that require creative thinking and exploration. Tombs are intricately designed, reflecting ancient Mayan and Incan cultures, with puzzles that are more challenging than ever. The game’s commitment to exploration rewards players with rich lore and useful upgrades, encouraging thorough investigation.
Definitive Edition Content: ★★★★☆
The Definitive Edition includes all previously released DLC, adding additional tombs, outfits, and side missions. These extras provide extended playtime and deeper insight into the world. The new tombs are inventive and enhance the already impressive lineup of exploration challenges.
Conclusion:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is a thrilling conclusion to Lara Croft’s origin story, blending intense stealth combat, intricate puzzles, and a richly atmospheric setting. The game leans into Lara’s internal journey, showcasing her evolution into the Tomb Raider she is destined to become. While the story pacing may feel uneven, the enhanced visuals and challenging tombs make this entry a worthy finale. Perfect for fans of exploration and those who appreciate a more mature, reflective take on the series.
Worth the price, best archaeology game, a lot of secrets and hidden messages, a lot of places to explore with beautiful landscape.
Parkour & Movement are worst, a game without jump feels better at movement than this.
6/10.
Great game even if it's a few years old now. Puzzles are fun just difficult enough without being crazy hard. Great visuals AND will run on older systems. AKA I don't need a $6k laptop to run the game. Love the TR series. Like nothing else. Classic game. Love it!
The game is an eye candy and delightful, to play, especially to play on an oled screen of steam deck and any other platform. the fires just pops out on the darkness
far worse than previous two installments. Story is boring and there is a ton of unnecessary dialog that cannot be skipped.
There are arcade style mini games during natural disasters that are simply horrible.
Great graphics and a really fun experience. I just wish that if you finished the game, it would allow you to play on a more difficult setting if you previously played on an easier one.
*update*
After getting the game fixed and running smoothly. It totally locks up on game load. Same error not enough resources. After doing file validation, reinstall of drivers and build 241 Beta... It just refuses to work. Windows, system drivers, video drivers (total fresh install), whole 9 yards. Even setting my resolution to 1080p on low settings, still crashes...
So Simply my review is now, just dont buy unless you want to take a roll of the dice and hope the game will work and that you can get 100% play through. Once it starts error-ing.... its over.
When it did work, I was mid 50s to about 100fps, avg was around 75fps with all high/ultra with Ray tracing on high settings at 2k resolution. My rig is a AMD 3700x (8 core 4.4ghz 16 thread), 16gig ram (3000mhz), NVME drive(3gbs transfer speeds), AMD 6700xt video card(12gb vram), with a 1000 watt psu.
--------OLD / ORIGINAL REVIEW--------
If your having issues with this game crashing with "low system resources" error. Try these.
1. Try running this game under Compatibility Windows 8 (game menus may stall at first but will clear up)
2. Try a totaly fresh install of your video card drivers
3. Try running it under the 241 Beta build (not recommended but for a Last Ditch Effort)
----Now the review.
+ Beautiful graphics
+ So far it seems like a good story to it
- Bugs, Major Bugs... I spent 3 hours, about 7 different beta builds (downloading and testing), Just to get past the opening in the game. Come on, this should have been fixed by now ! Its almost 2025 !!! Eventualy found that just setting compatibility mode to Windows 8 worked.
- Lara character model is lower quality than the previous Tomb Raider games. Cut Scenes seem to be better but the actual character model while playing seems to be softer textures.
- When collecting items (field notes, pottery, ect..) , Lara doesnt explain what it was. You have to hit the TAB key at the right time or go back to the inventory menu and find what ever it was. Just have her say something, not.... nothing at all. Like, Ah 2000 bc gold coin, or This pottery is Aztec and good shape...
AMD 3700x, 16gb ram @ 3000, Windows 10, NVME 2tb drive, and Radeon/AMD 6700xt video card. I am able to run this game under a mix of Ultra and High settings with good smooth fps.
A Dissapointing Follow-Up to Rise Of
I was hoping I'd get more of the same but bigger and better. Unfortunately however this is a much more linear game compared to Rise of the Tomb Raider. There are still some open-zone areas with side activities and collectibles but it's a far more scaled back experience compared to the previous title in that regard.
Now I don't mind linearity in games but Shadow of the Tomb Raider constantly interrupts the action with cutscenes or other segments that take away player agency. It pretty much has all of the hallmarks of typical western design that I've come to dislike: Long segments of 'walking-and-talking' where your only option is to press forward, unskippable cutscenes (that drag on and on), platforming that's visually impressive but mechanically bland, constant repeats of the same 'near death' sequences that cheapen the experience, sudden camera changes that have you mess up jumps, etc etc. It's all very annoying really and quickly soured my time with the game.
Thematically it's a bit of a mess as well. It takes itself far too serious and at one point we see Lara break down in tears?!; yes, the main character having an existential crisis is exactly what I want from a globe trotting relic hunting adventure! And we're three games into this trilogy and we're doing kid flash backs still? I know these games owe a ton to Uncharted (the irony isn't lost on me as that series itself was inspired partly by Tomb Raider) but that scene in particular felt like a badly copypasted bit from that franchise.
Of course Lara's past is, evidently, also filled with more heavy handed subject matter (suicide!) so along with the game's muddy visuals you can expect a nice dour ride through the jungle. Pass.
After playing this for a 2nd time I honestly think this is the best in the trilogy. Feels the most like a classic Tomb Raider experience less emphasis on combat and more on the actual puzzles and exploration. The midway point does slog a little bit once you get to the one hub area that is my only real complaint. Overall great experience with great performance.
Probably the best game in the survivor trilogy. The setting feels fresh, and the combat and stealth are better than they were in the previous title. I also enjoyed the story the most out of the 3 games. The One With The Jungle difficulty was also a welcome departure from the game being too easy in previous titles. Overall, I would recommend getting the trilogy on sale.
this game is that buggy that it put me off completely and now i don't even feel like continuing. the grapple bug, oil/fire puzzle infinitely spinning me around in circles unable to stop and other visual glitches ruined it. had to reload checkpoints too many times
story was decent in the beginning, good graphics, but the others are 10x better. maybe i'll give it another chance sometime but for now i don't recommend
SOTTR was a visual masterpiece, the game's world is so immersive and vibrant, filled with beautiful small details that make it all better. the lush environments had me screenshotting everywhere i go lol 💞
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the final installment in the "Survivor" or "Origin"-trilogy.
The gameplay is pretty close to the prequels; you can hunt, craft and discover secrets in a semi-open-world while playing through the main story line. There is an insane amount of secrets, tombs, caves and puzzles to explore and the game rewards you highly for doing so! Added up the gameplay is great and it feels rewarding but over all i feel like it's not as polished as its prequels. I think half a year more in the oven would have made this game even better.
The graphics are the best in the whole franchise yet there are also unpolished parts. The quite long story is really great! The best one in the trilogy; you really can't anticipate what happens next! We met a new, really brutal Lara and also say goodbye to her (for now).
The DLCs are alright and the sidequest are interesting but nothing outstanding.
Sadly it sometimes still suffers from poor performance. I had random crashes which could only be fixed by playing parts of the game in DX11. As i said, a bit more polishing would have made this an outstanding game!
8/10
