I have been developing games and creating pixel art full time for a little over three years now. I have spent a lot of time studying and trying to perfect "game feel" principles. Gunlock is the first installment in what I have dubbed the "mini series." Gunlock is a small but very polished score chasing game with retro gameboy palette pixelart.
- Stomp on enemies in order to increase combo multiplier and reload ammo.
- Pick up ammo supplies to fully reload and swap to a random gun.
- Gun them enemies down with over a dozen different guns!
- Collect coins to purchase more guns and sexy color palettes!
- Compete against other players across the Steam leaderboards on 3 different stages!
- Defeat 3 Giant bosses!
- One hit and you're dead... so don't get hit.
Gunlock was developed by two people:
- Aleksandar Kuzmanovic [MrAmlice] - Coding / Design / Art / SFX
- Brian Havey [zminusone] - Music / Additional SFX

no internet? got a few mins to spare while waiting for your online class to start? got an annoying kid lacking culture who you want annoyed and leave because pixel graphics are old? well gunlock is the game for you
wish i had this in a arcade cabinet or something in a fancy box for people to play when over
Its an hardcore platformer, i kinda like it but its really hard..
Quite a challenging game which will make you play a level over and over in order to complete it, definitely not a game suitable for everyone, specially if you get triggered easily by boss fights (me included)
Got this for $1.19 and for the fun I had I felt like I stole something from the devs.
Good job on this game and I am looking forward for your next game
Click Here. To see Unworthy on steam.
its a very casual game, if you ever played "Super Crate Box" which is a free game on steam, you'd be familiar with this game because it has the same concept.
The game has 4 levels, 15 weapons, 10 color palletes to choose from.
Every time you pickup ammo it fills and changes your weapon to another one from the ones you bought.
You shoot the enemies and can jump on them to damage them and refill some of your ammo.
Every level has a bar to fill once filled you'll fight the boss, once defeated you'll go back to filling the bar, basically all
levels are endless since this is a "how far can you " score game, the next level unlocks once you beat the current level's boss.
You die in pretty much one hit from anything.
Very good selection of weapons, shotguns , lasers , energy rifles , missiles and more they're very cool.
Love the retro style of the game, the soundtrack and SFX are perfect.
Want a casual retro feeling game to play for 2-3 hours ? This babe is for you.
It’s a short and engaging arcade-styled game that’ll only cost you a few quarters.
Graphically, Gunlock also does a good job of appealing to my pixelated interests. Levels have great motifs that match the great sprites and the backgrounds. The stylish 2 color (with shades) pallets distinguish point of interest from the background. Firing and hitting a target with a weapon is easy to measure. Also the pixel-cursive font used in the logo and menus is fantastic.
I’m a big fan of the jammin’ chiptunes that Gunlock has (props to zminusone). However, I chose to pick my own audio for the most part as each level’s track can amuse for so long. Plus, the game makes a good ‘thumb twiddler’ so it’s great to use as something to do while also catching up on music/youtube/podcasts.
Enemy and stage variety is diverse across the few boards Gunlock contains and both work nicely together. The snowy area had a good idea going with horizontal layers that complemented the snowballs and snowmen while the jungle level had enemies that got up in your face in the small safe zone.
There are a few inconsistencies with enemy spawns and boss spawn timing (once had one show up over and over, which was convenient for gold collection) but these moments weren’t common.
Weapons also have variety and the unlockable ones are awesome. They’ve all got distant sound effects which gives them character and can help you quickly identify them when they swap out. Having to get to an ammo pack to swap and refill a weapon is a good way to keep things moving and engaging. You’ve got to considered how to get there safely and then how to change your playstyle to accommodate for the new weapon.
However, once I had saw the option to only choose 3+ weapons for battle, levels became a little more streamlined with unfavorable weapons gone and more predictability weapon drops. I’m not sure if this made things more entertaining since it did replaced variety and quick adapting with consistency that helped me advance to the end. Balancing random elements in a tougher game can be risky. Perhaps that variety could be promoted with weapon-specific levels/challenges to motivate the player to get out of their comfort zone.
Overall, if you’re familiar with games of a similar control scheme it’s an easy recommendation.
I’m not sure if Gunlock is designed to be a longer term project (it has been updated in the past) but it feels like there’s a few empty slots for loads of potential for different modes/power ups/weapons/secrets/levels/challenges.
Regardless, it’s a great little gem the way it is now.
The major reason I bring that up is because of lack of acknowledgement of beating the ‘finale boss’. Although, that one mysterious achievement makes me think there might be more to that last area….
Not much to say here, which is a good thing! While I technically beat all 4 levels in my 2 hours playtime (probably took me a bit longer as I was drinking some beer), this is a score attack game and I will be back to get a couple of the score achievements. Gameplay is a lot like towerfall: there is jumping on heads, going through one side to another, etc. except that rather than bow and arrows you have a variety of deadly weapons. And there are bosses too. I highly recommend
A much more dynamic variation on the theme of Super Crate Box with a pretty rad soundtrack.
I kind of goofed and spent the first 10 minutes of the game thinking you can't aim your gun (didn't even bother trying the right stick), kind of like that was supposed to be one of the gimmicks? Yet I still had lots of fun stomping on enemies. If that's not a mark of a good game, I don't know what is.
Always love how every color palette in this game is made up of only 4 colors at a time. Really amazes me, because all of the levels look really nice. There's a wide variety of colors to choose from, and each one changes the feel of the game to me. Very nice feature, I'm a fan.
Game moves very fast. After you die, new game starts right up, no having to press a button or anything. Decent weapon variety, leaderboards are fun to go after, and game just received a fourth stage! New content!
Gunlock is a simple single screen arcade style scoreathon, featuring an en vogue Game Boy™ pixel art style and pallet.
Evocative of arcade and home console video games of the 80s, the action takes place in a arena that wraps at the edges with the goal to either kill or be killed. Your performance in Gunlock is measured by combo multipliers and total score. Progression is made by defeating bosses to unlock further arenas and by collecting dropped nuggets. Nuggets are then spent on further weapons and colour pallets. I did not enjoy all of the guns available and found myself selecting my favorite 3, but this does give you the option choosing how you want to play and is a welcome option.
The mechanics of the game are explained well enough in a brief tutorial level and can be expressed with a keyboard and mouse or controller. Having tried both control options I found that unsurprisingly I was more accurate with a mouse than a analog stick or steam controller touch pad. The action felt tangible enough through the controls that any failure felt like it was my fault rather than any fault of my controls.
The enemies come at you in waves, getting progressively trickier but also fair as you advance. I felt like each enemy was teaching me something about the game and its mechanics or at least reminding me. Once you have dispatched with enough foes the arena boss makes an appearance to give you a final exam, and can take a few tries to master.
The art style is very well realised but distracting at times. I found myself not noticing enemies due to the colour pallet on occasion. However once I had locked in a zen state with the game this ceased to be an issue. I can appreciate why the game has the art style it has, and if had one thing I could say to the developer it would be to carry on with the pixel art style because you clearly have developed a talent for it, but I would like to see more colour in future titles.
The sound design and music is fitting for the aesthetic, featuring 8bit tones and noise layered with the odd wild west whistle. I enjoyed the sound and music, it feels appropriate for the action happening on screen. There is a lack of sound from the enemies (unless I just didn’t notice) but I feel this may have been overkill, as the game strikes a nice balance between gunfire and music.
I really enjoy Gunlock, it's a great game to easily spend a few rounds or an hour on. It requires no investment from the player other than the development of your ability to improve and reach higher scores. While there are a few minor things that nagged me about the game overall I would recommend this game and say that it is worth your time and money, especially if you enjoy polished retro style arcade games.
Fun score-chasing game at a budget cost. Fast-paced, works well, nothing bad to say.
Video Review: https://youtu.be/kBW4pB1MqZ4
I'm having a great time playing Gunlock. It has a good amount of enemy variety and even though the game has only three levels none of the enemies are recycled. That means each level is completely different. I think a lot of games take the easy route and reuse enemies to "expand" a game but it gets old. In Gunlock there are no worries about that and plenty of reasons to keep playing to get the high score.
Other review saying 18min, are you joking!? I put over four hours into this game and I could still keep playing. New guns and color pallets are purchasable with found gold. Some of these guns completely change how you play.
It's a distillation of arena combat in their own style. It's pure arcade fun with none of the extras.
Fun little time waster! Excellent for just picking up for a couple minutes at a time, just as the description states!
Little arcadey gem with a fantastic soundtrack and a nice look.
The gameplay's fun, quick, and fluid with Meat Boy-esque fast restarts for the many deaths you'll probably have across the three endless levels. Definitely a game to pick up and easily lose track of time trying to top your own score.
It's literally the price of a candybar.
Addictive gameplay. Cool art. Badass soundtrack. This game offers a lot of replayability and fun at a great price. Give Gunlock a shot!
Got it for a buck and change. Pretty fun and challenging. Control scheme is a little wonky and the controls are a bit floaty but it's pretty fun to be honest. Has that "one more run" kinda feel to it. Plus the musiic is pretty rad. Gotta love them bleep-bloops!
Addictive gameplay and great music! Didn't realize a game for this little can have so much content and amusement... also things to unlock! Everytime I thought I was going to quit, I kept deciding to play another round and try to get a higher score, or unlock another level.
It's a blast!
This game is super addictive, I can see myself sinking a lot of time into it. Great cost per enjoyment ratio on this little gem.
Great solid fun arcade game from the genius mind behind Unworthy.
Engaging gameplay, great art, lots of content and more for only the price of a beer.
A really fun and addicting game for the price! I still haven't killed the first boss... Must try again!
I'm a little biased; I wrote the music for Gunlock and I also playtested it quite a bit! Still, after all that, booting it up on release day I find the game to be surprisingly addictive and loads of fun! Plus there's a couple big game changing secrets that mix it up quite a bit if you keep playing! Have fun!
