I bought this game before I knew it had a VR mode and finally got around to playing it today and I'm loving it so far. I'm only about an hour or so in and I'm glad I bought it when I did.
Fantastic 3rd person VR. Amazing graphics, good combat, dank af subject matter (see Sea Of Corpses battle area, made living by Senua's psychosis.) I'm buying Senua2 asap.
Cuộc Phiêu Lưu Kỳ Ảo Của Senua
Wow! What a pleasant surprise to find this game in VR! I thought it was a recent release but then realised it came out in 2018. Wish I found it sooner. Almost 2 hrs into it but can say this is right up there in the top 3 vr games I have played. I wish more games would port over to VR in the same format. Game play, graphics, sound are all amazing. Well done Ninja Theory!
To all the people complaining about controls just use an xbox controller. Store page says that is what is supported.
This game is a ethereal experience all through out. Masterful story telling with vast beautiful yet lonely settings. This is not an all out action game. This is a psychological slow burn in which all conflicts carry a weight of importance. Truly one of the most well balanced and powerful games I have ever played. I can't recommend it enough especially on VR taking you deeper into the darkness of this Celtic nightmare.
This is unplayable for me with a Meta Quest 3S. Controllers don't work. Have to use the keyboard, and the mouse doesn't work to look around.
Good :)
Awesome game. Steam moderators are fucking retards.
love it <3 if you're into story telling, this is your game!
nice VR adaptation. All good, recommended
Just play the flat version of the game. Or don't because that is a terrible game too.
I only played the VR version. Be advised that it does not support actual VR controllers and is best played with a gamepad. It's an over-the-shoulder 3rd person experience like so many games, but with a VR window into the world. Personally, I enjoyed that quite a bit.
That said, although I can heartily recommend it as a VR cinematic spectacle, as a game (which is, of course, what it is) it leaves a fair bit to be desired: Its largely on-rails design compromises its psychological horror aspect, and its unnecessary perma-death mechanic (where you can die up to X amount of times before losing all progress) does nothing to mitigate that and only magnified what would have otherwise been minor irritations in the gameplay design.
You move in linear fashion from one section to another, engage in a bit of combat in specific small arenas, and solve some light puzzles along the way. My main annoyance with the gameplay is that the combat forces a frustrating auto-lock system which takes control away from you and gets in the way as often as not. Beyond that, it's playable and functions well, there's not just enough game here for me to recommend as such.
I enjoyed the immersive narrative aspects of it enough to play it through and look forward to the sequel, but overall I decided against recommending it as a game.
Great good
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice VR Edition : By Triple F
"Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice VR Edition" is an immersive adaptation of the critically acclaimed action-adventure game by Ninja Theory, originally released in 2017. The VR edition, which launched in 2018, takes the haunting psychological journey of the protagonist, Senua, and amplifies the intensity through virtual reality. This version is more than just a port; it enhances the emotional and atmospheric depth of the experience, making it one of the most unique offerings in VR gaming to date.
At the heart of "Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice" is its story—a dark, personal odyssey through the mind of Senua, a Pict warrior struggling with psychosis. The game draws players into her journey to Helheim to recover the soul of her deceased lover, and it deftly blurs the lines between reality, myth, and Senua’s delusions. The VR edition takes the core experience and places players directly into her world, enhancing the sense of isolation and vulnerability that pervades the game. Through virtual reality, the game becomes an even more personal exploration of trauma, mental illness, and Norse mythology, pushing the limits of what storytelling in video games can achieve.
The game's standout feature is its audiovisual design, which has been painstakingly reimagined for VR. "Hellblade’s" signature use of binaural audio—where voices seem to whisper directly into the player's ears from all directions—is even more potent in VR, as the player is fully enveloped in Senua’s auditory hallucinations. The whispers, taunts, and unsettling soundscape create a constant tension, making it feel as though the voices in Senua’s head are directly addressing the player. The environments, from fog-laden forests to nightmarish underworlds, are rendered in stunning detail and feel oppressively close in VR, adding to the game’s eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere.
Mechanically, the game transitions smoothly to VR, despite being third-person. While most VR games focus on first-person perspectives to maximize immersion, "Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice" uses third-person view to great effect. It allows players to feel like an omnipresent companion to Senua, watching her every move while still being engulfed in the world. Combat, although sparse, is more intense when experienced in VR. The visceral sword fights, with parries and brutal strikes, feel more immediate, and Senua's physical presence on screen adds weight to her movements. The level of detail in her animations, combined with VR’s depth of field, brings a new level of realism to her emotional expressions and body language.
However, the VR edition does come with its set of limitations. The game's controls, designed originally for a standard console and PC setup, can feel slightly cumbersome when adapted to VR. Movement can be disorienting, especially during more chaotic moments of combat or platforming. While the third-person perspective prevents the usual VR motion sickness associated with fast-paced first-person games, some players may still find extended play sessions uncomfortable. Moreover, the cinematic nature of Hellblade means that certain camera transitions and cutscenes can be jarring in VR, though Ninja Theory has made efforts to smooth out these elements where possible.
Performance-wise, the game runs well on higher-end VR setups but can struggle on less powerful systems. Visuals in VR can be slightly downgraded compared to the original version, particularly in texture quality and draw distance. However, this is a necessary compromise to ensure a smooth experience. Despite these minor setbacks, the game remains visually stunning, with many scenes taking full advantage of VR’s immersive potential, particularly in its environmental storytelling and surreal visuals that blend reality with Senua’s psychotic episodes.
In conclusion, "Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice VR Edition" is a masterclass in how virtual reality can elevate narrative-driven games. Its focus on mental health, enhanced by the immersive qualities of VR, makes it not only a compelling game but also a powerful emotional experience. While there are a few technical hiccups and the transition to VR might not be flawless, the game’s atmospheric design, binaural soundscapes, and emotional storytelling more than make up for it. For those with a VR setup, this is a must-play, offering one of the most intimate and harrowing journeys in gaming.
Honestly, unsure how this doesn't fall within overwhelmingly positive. This is one of the most memorable games I have played, let alone VR ports. If you enjoy rich stories, horror, heart break and Norse Mythology then you are in the right place. A video game has no right to make me feel this way.
Didn't really like the non VR version. The VR version is more intense and made me realize why so many like this game.
doesnt work i have a valve index on a 4080 its the game
I was a big fan of the regular Hellblade but this VR version just exists for no reason, This is just the game but your headset is your monitor and you use a gamepad (VR controls aren't even supported)
Feels like a beginners first VR mod but at least it comes with the base game so you don't have to pay any extra
This is just the normal game, except instead of using your monitor you use your VR headset. Doesn't use VR controllers, you have to play with a normal controller. No particular VR features. It's really JUST the normal game. Also means you'll get nauseous since there's no motion sickness reducing feature of any kind.
There's literally no reason to play this version.
A game made with a real purpose and meaning. One that every gamer should try at least once with an open mind. It offers a glimpse into the stigma and suffering of those unfortunate enough to suffer from severe mental illnesses. As a game, it is engaging enough in terms of the core combat and puzzle solving based gameplay and the 3rd person perspective works pretty well in VR too (although the graphics aren't quite as stunning as the flatscreen version).
I STRONGLY recommend watching the Hellblade Feature in the main menu after you complete the game. It's about 20mins long and it shows you the research, craftsmanship and genuine compassion that went into making this groundbreaking game.
Storytelling & Graphics are amazing, even more so in VR.
Worth it.
"VR" you still need a controller to play, so not really VR
One of the best games I ever played. Heavy subjects, some existential questions. Not a typical super hero stuff. Too bad studio got bought by big M... R.I.P.
