In Unforgiving: A Northern Hymn, I couldn’t help but question the initial setup as it didn’t really make sense story-wise, but moving past that I was drawn into the protagonist’s trek through the woods. There were Swedish folklore-inspired monsters to either run from or sneak around; very much the typical indie horror stuff, including a limited light source and simple puzzles that required finding and using objects.
It was linear by all accounts, yet it was possible to explore some areas. The thing that stood out the most was the harp, which was used to play notes that opened the way forward. I might not sound too enthusiastic overall, but while it didn't push boundaries or anything, it was a decent enough indie.
If creepy babies/toddlers creep you out, then this game is unexpectidaly for you.
Short but sweet and dedicated to Swedish folklore. Much too dark in terms of lighting though, I could hardly see a thing even with matches. A bit confusing and rough but for a first-time studio it's a good brief romp. Get it on sale.
Unforgiving - A Northern Hymn - A Chilling Journey Through Nordic Folklore
“A haunting exploration of Swedish mythology wrapped in atmospheric horror.”
Unforgiving - A Northern Hymn, developed by Angry Demon Studio, is a 2017 horror game that immerses players in a world steeped in Nordic mythology. This debut title from a small Swedish indie team has its rough edges but presents a solid foundation for an engaging horror experience.
Atmosphere and Immersion
From the moment you step into the dark, expansive Swedish forests, the atmosphere captivates. The first half of the game delivers a horror player's dream: long periods of tension build-up, subtle exposure to the unknown, and an unnerving sense of anticipation that culminates in impactful moments of action. The combination of traditional Swedish environments and folklore adds an authentic touch to the chilling experience.
Voice Acting and Soundtrack
As a Swedish player, hearing the native language was initially jarring but ultimately charming. The voice acting ranges from excellent to adequate, showcasing the talents of likely amateur actors. While English voice options are available, my experience was enriched by the original Swedish voices. Complementing the sound design, the soundtrack—crafted by William Sahl—merges cozy and creepy elements, drawing on Swedish folk music to enhance the overall atmosphere.
Gameplay and Pacing
The game is relatively short, clocking in at around three hours for a leisurely exploration. Unfortunately, it lacks significant replayability, as alternative endings seem nonexistent. The pacing falters in the second half, relying on common horror tropes like hiding from monsters and puzzle-solving, which can feel tedious compared to the initial suspenseful buildup.
Visuals and Design
Despite being a debut title, the visuals and animations are impressive for an indie game. You can sense the hard work poured into the project. The detailed environments effectively capture the eerie beauty of the Swedish wilderness, while the narrative draws you into the dark lore that has haunted generations.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Unforgiving - A Northern Hymn is not the scariest horror game out there, nor is it perfect, but it offers a unique journey through Swedish folklore that is both enjoyable and atmospheric. It’s a refreshing take on horror that caters to players interested in story and atmosphere rather than relentless scares.
Recommendation: Yes. I suggest picking it up, especially during sales, to support the passionate developers behind it. The game has charm, quality, and an intriguing premise that makes it worth experiencing.

OKAY, SO I *LOVED* THIS GAME BUT LISTEN... IF IT WAS ON SWITCH IT WOULD'VE BEEN PERFECT 😩
Graphics: SCARY GOOD... BUT NOT ENOUGH PIXEL CHARM LIKE THE OLD NINTENDO GAMES, YA KNOW?
Controls: NO JOY-CON SUPPORT AGAIN?! C'MON IT'S 2024, PEOPLE, GIVE ME THAT MOTION CONTROL FEAR! 🎮
Atmosphere: YEAH IT'S SPOOKY, BUT WHERE'S THAT NINTENDO MAGIC™ TO MAKE IT REALLY *CHILLING*?
Portability: CAN'T PLAY THIS ON THE BUS, SO WHAT'S THE POINT?! 🚍
Honestly, it's like the devs *tried* to make this a spooky Nordic adventure but forgot to include the real Nintendo secret sauce. It’s dark, it’s creepy, but could you *imagine* playing this with motion controls on Switch? 🛑
Hours played: 25 (ALL FOR RESEARCH, OKAY?!)
Rating: 3/10 (Would be 13/10 with Ninty magic) 😒
P.S. PORT IT TO SWITCH, I NEED TO BE SCARED ON THE GO!
Great ambience and enjoyable gameplay
too dark, but somehow fun 7,5/10
I've always loved Nordic mythology and see this game turning a simple a hymn (a poem/song) into a horror project. story is simple to follow along, but some chase scenes are a little buggy. other than that, really good game.
