About the Game
OverviewDRAGON QUEST® XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age™ tells a captivating tale of a hunted hero and is the long-awaited role-playing game from series creator Yuji Horii, character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. While it is the eleventh mainline entry in the critically acclaimed series, DRAGON QUEST XI is a completely standalone experience that features entirely new characters, a beautifully detailed world, finely tuned turn-based combat, and an immersive story that will appeal to longtime fans and franchise newcomers alike. After its release in Japan, DRAGON QUEST XI won multiple gaming awards and received critical praise, including PlayStation’s Platinum Prize and a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu (an influential video game publication in Japan).
Story
A young man, about to participate in his village’s coming of age ceremony, travels to a Sacred Stone alongside his childhood friend. After a series of unexpected events, this intrepid adventurer learns he is the reincarnation of a legendary hero from a forgotten age.
The young hero sets forth into an unknown world on a journey to unravel the mystery of his past… but the welcome he receives is far from warm. Upon revealing his identity to the King, the hero is branded as “The Darkspawn” and hunted by a relentless army.
Fleeing from his pursuers, the hero assembles a band of endearing adventurers who believe he is actually The Luminary reborn. The hero and his newfound companions embark on a quest that will take them across continents and over vast oceans as they learn of an ominous threat facing the world.
KEY FEATURES
- Unravel an Epic Mystery in a Riveting Tale – DRAGON QUEST XI tells the tale of a hunted hero: denigrated as a demon and pursued by a malicious monarch, you must embark on a quest to unravel the mystery of your fate and save a doomed world. At the heart of the game is an immersive story with twists and turns that pull you in and keep you craving more – from the opening cutscene to the final credits!
- Assemble a Colorful Cast of Loyal Companions – Accompanying the hero on his quest is an endearing band of adventurers with their own rich backstories and personalities as diverse as their designs. Once again, famed manga artist Akira Toriyama brings the characters of DRAGON QUEST to life with his delightful, one-of-a-kind style.
- Explore a Beautiful, Living World – DRAGON QUEST XI brings a massive, gorgeous world to life in a style that blends stylistic cel-shading with photorealistic detail. Excitement lurks around every corner as players explore populous cities, quaint villages, magnificent castles, and dark dungeons. NPC’s attend to their daily schedules, monsters change behaviors to fit their environments, and players can access new areas with the use of monstrous vehicles.
- Engage in Classic Battles with a Modern Twist – DRAGON QUEST XI’s turn-based battle system eases players into combat with an accessible experience that features mechanics simple enough for the novice but with enough depth to satisfy hardcore fans.
- Have Some Fun & Save the World – In addition to its captivating narrative, DRAGON QUEST XI features tons of side-quests and addicting mini-games that provide enough content to keep you playing for well over 100 hours. You will face insurmountable odds and an evil force of unimaginable power… but while the stakes are high, there are many fun distractions to find if you know where to look.

Absolutely loved it. It's everything you'd expect from a DQ game and more, tons of content to get through.
So I bought this and then they released the new version shortly after. Game is great so far but annoyed that those of us that purchased this version didn't get the upgrade for free or even a discount. If somehow you come across this one somehow do not purchase this version and make sure to get the definitive edition instead. Here is the link

One of my first games ever was Dragon Warrior on NES. Seeing what it has become has been an amazing experience. It is one of my favorite comfort games.
banger.
:)
First off, do not buy this verison, buy the definitive edition. But that edition does not solve the biggest problems which is how bad the game is in the second act:
First act has a great story that is developed at a good pace mixing in dungeons, world exploration, and battles.
Second act the game goes completely downhill and it is an annoying filler in which your party is set back in every possible way. You spend the entire act to get back to almost where you were at the end of act one. The story is filler made up of excessively long-winded cutscenes that are as logical and poorly written as an episode of Dragonball Z. There are almost no dungeons so you just alternate between traveling to locations you've already been to, cutscenes, and boss battles. You have to rediscover every location you went to in the previous act and they never explain why you cannot just Zoom back to the locations you previously discovered. Clearly they wanted to add more time to the game without actually adding new locations to the world.
They have different costumes for characters but only if you equip specific armor sets so you get to enjoy your favorite costume for a few hours of play until its no longer up to par.
The only saving grace is you can mod the game to fix a lot of these problems.
One of the best JRPGs I played
Everything is awesome
Love the game, played it on and off over the year's; such a classic!
One of the greatest JRPG's of all time
ez
Very cool nostalgic game
Yes.
Nothing could be more classic. Well optimized, well for this version. It's a pity though that S-E makes you believe it's a definitive edition, when there's a relevant graphics downgrade. Personally, I didn't play the 'S' version.
In terms of j-rpg gameplay, very good!
*Puff* *Puff* 10/10
This game is incredible. The art style and animations are brilliant, and the characters are well developed and intriguing. If you have any interest in RPG's, this game should be near the top of your list to play.
One of my favorite games, would absolutely recommend the definitive edition.
It's a classic JRPG. Play it, unless you have the updated edition, then play that instead. I do miss the ability to change characters' jobs from some of the other games but the characters do shine with their unique personalities in this game!
A truly great JRPG. Why can't we have more games like this? The JRPG formula is simple: it's made by a Japanese developer, and it has turn-based combat. DQXI shows exactly how good it can be. There is nothing innovative about swapping out turn-based for action. And if the developer isn't Japanese, its NOT a J-RPG. It might be very much like a JRPG, but its not J.
Right now you can only buy the Definitive edition. It has worse graphics, better music, its still one of the best JRPGs ever made. If you like JRPGs, you need to play it!
I was pleasantly suprised by how good this game is. I never played a Dragon Quest befor and I didn't really have any expectations going into this one but it was great. It is rare that a game takes 100 hrs for one playthrough and it is much rarer that it never got boring or tedious during that time.

Developer/Publisher gave into woke nonsense (Even though they didn't actually want to, but felt forced to).
Therefore, since I already bought it a while back, the only right thing to do, is to show them with a review.
I would not have bought this game if I had known about their hatred towards straight men and women, as well as hatred towards white people and Asian people.
Unacceptable behaviour, do not recommend the game or anything from this publisher & developer.
This game is a masterpiece but steam reloads my corrupted saves from 2020.
I played the whole day and my saves disappeared from the folder. The game crashes at startup because of the downloaded corrupt saves downloaded from the steam cloud (it automatically does this, even after i disabed steam cloud for this game being aware of this problem).
Saves your parties into different slots in the game and manually copy the saves folder into your drive just in case !
h
was pretty great traditional-ish jRpg, Blings like Jade ;)
Pretty good
Amazing Story, smooth gameplay
kino
Fuck Square Enix for releasing a definitive edition with nothing new except worse graphics than the base game and a 2d mode they expect players to pay $40 for the game a second time to access
Really stupid choice just a complete middle finger to the consumer, I'll never buy another SE title within 3 years of launch especially not a standalone title like this
One of the greatest RPG's ever made
RIP Akira Toriyama
The ending of the main story is one of the best I have ever seen in a game. 10/10 would cry again
Probably the best DQ game in my humble opinion
An excellent addition to the Dragon Quest series. I don't think there's anything to dislike, nothing that would stop you from playing the game.
Word of caution, don't activate all of the challenges at the same time.
1. No Fleeing from Battle (Dead meat if you can't win)
2. No Shopping (Cannot purchase anything from shops, even quest related items)
3. No armour (Can change weapons, means you'll take a ton of damage)
4. Reduced Experience from Easy Fights (Enemies that are too weak give 0 EXP, items still drop)
5. All Enemies Are Super Strong (All Enemies have higher Stat, if you don't want a breeze)
6. Shypox (The main character is cursed, randomly losing turn in battle, aswell as freezing up random NPC Interactions)
I got completely stuck at Octavia because I couldn't buy good weapons or even wear armorur. Level grinding in this situation was such a slog, I put myself in such a hard situation 'XD
