Despite some visual glitches and the sadly ever-present bad localization that the series has, the games are still gems. In particular the visual glitches tend to be related to switching windows, so simply saving and a good old close and reopen fixes them. For the localization if you understand a bit of Japanese you can get a grasp of the original dialogue via patching the voices, though many lines are not voiced.
Anyhow... definitely play FC first, regarding the series as a whole, take the first game of whatever arc gets your attention the most.
A sequel that enhances everything that made the first chapter special, perfectly developing its characters and story.
Incredible follow-up to the first game. The pacing was really great this time around, kept me engaged the entire time. Really solid JRPG. These games have inspired so many other games in and out of the JRPG genre.

the main dish from trails sky. i cleared on hard difficulty, it really one of my worst decision. through it hard i do enjoy it, the zing backstory is good, it really pay off the grind, except schera its kinda bad. through the journey are good still tho the main villain are too comical and stereotypical. but still i do enjoy the journey, i like how orbment system really gives you freedom to set a chara in a role you want, that most of jrpg doesnt do. like A is should be buffer/debuffer but in trails you can do as you like but it just limited on how orbment, how estelle and joshua are grown up as a characther, etc.
picking up from the big twist ending of TRAILS IN THE SKY 1, local she/her himbo estelle bright sets her jaw and embarks upon a journey to RECLAIM HER BOYWIFE, come hell or high water. choose your senpai and gather the gang cos it's time to GET DOWN TO BUSINESS to DEFEAT THE CULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just make sure that you have played the previous game and have its clear data on hand to reap the rewards of the first 50 hours of so in this Game That Had So Much Game In The Game They Had To Split It Into Two Whole Games.
ok, so, i mentioned in my review of sky first chapter that it's a pretty okay game that sits at somewhere above what the kids today call "mid" i guess with a few dips into serious teeth-grinding territory in terms of agate's character arc. i am happy to report that SC suffers from NONE of these problems. sky 1/FC had an extremely strong ending and the scenario quality just keeps getting better from there, particularly in terms of estelle's character writing and the way characters like joshua and renne's psychology is handled. delicious stuff, 100/10, a+ gold star, extra accolades go to the loc team not just because trails games are a nightmare to translate but because the loc choices wrt character voice are great too.
one of the most enjoyable things about sky 2/sc is how you can really tell that the devs have way more confidence in their presentation. sky 1/fc is like 50smth hours of setup, and now in the second game the devs are going ham. this is especially noticeable with the huge jump in cinematic presentation for cutscenes, the tuning done to the battle system in between games, and so on. it is good stuff.
if i have to voice one single point of complaint with the entire package it's that falcom is doing that evangelion thing of "we're throwing abrahamic mysticism in here for flavor cos its exotic & therefore chuunibyou bait regardless of its original context" thats Really tiresome if youre from a non-christian abrahamic tradition such as judaism, islam, zoroastrianism etc. just like dude... put that down... im dying of secondhand embarrassment lol. personally i find it extra annoying given how falcom managed to simultaneously matrix dodge some narly real world implications w/schera and luciola. like cmon man you can CLEARLY do real good when you try water you doing lol..........
however, even with the pet peevage taken into account, sc is overall a game that rules ass. if you have the requisite free time and cashola to allocate, it is worth your consideration.

Amazing game. You need to play the first chapter before this, and the buildup is incredibly slow, but the end point is way worth it!!

I'm really glad I continued with this game. It picks up exactly where it left off in FC. This one really felt like a cinema experience and really sets the pace for the rest of the series. I enjoyed this game thoroughly.

After finishing the first Trails in the Sky, I couldn’t wait to dive straight into the second chapter. The story, the world, and the characters are absolutely captivating, and the narrative is simply phenomenal. While the combat isn’t groundbreaking, it does its job well—and hey, this is just the beginning of an epic series, so it only gets better from here.
I’m thrilled to have discovered this incredible saga and won’t stop until I’ve experienced every chapter of this masterpiece.

The story continues... The characters in 'Trails in the Sky' have such individuality, and it's so good to see them reappear in the Second Chapter. I only started the first game 3 months ago, but it's already one of my favourite RPGs. Characters, story, gameplay - all are so much fun!
An amazing game with graphics that have aged like a fine wine (mostly)
Easily one the best RPG series out there. While the graphics are poor by todays standards, the gameplay loop is fun and engaging, the story is hands down among the best in gaming (I've been gaming for 37 years), and the world building is incredible. Each game builds on the previous in a compelling way not found in most "trilogies" and "direct sequels" we are accustomed to. The characters are complex and engaging, and each has personal motivations, feelings, and grows over the course of the games/series.
As a warning: the game tends to start very slowly and feels very run of the mill and anime-like. This is a poor representation of the compelling nature of the games though. It took me three attempts to get through the first game, each time feeling it was sort of boring. I'll admit the buildup and payoff does not come until close to the end of the first game, but after that you will be hooked on the series and never look back. Each game in the series has a similar style of starting pretty slow to introduce the world, characters, and overarching narrative, making it feel a bit like a creature of the week sort of presentation, if you can remember Buffy the Vampire Slayer for example, but the story really ramps up and literally everything is connected in a meaningful way.
Another thing I love is the portrait work as it conveys a lot of emotion and feeling. You get very attached to the cast in a way few games can do. This is honestly the pinnacle of RPG games and story telling in my opinion. Check out the other Nihon Falcom games as well, as they are all incredibly good in their own way. While the developer may have a middling budeget for special effects and modern graphics, there is absolutely nothing middling about this series.
As someone that struggled to get into the series over many years: ignoring this series will leaving you missing out on one of the most compelling narratives in gaming.
The perfect sequel is when the first part is a lamp adventure and penetration into the world, the second part begins to accelerate and gain such momentum that you just sit with your mouth open.
Peak romance
outstanding, one of the best rpgs i've ever played
The last two chapters are a bit of a slog to get through, but it’s a great continuation of the story started in the first game of the series, while appropriately upping the ante even more for the next entry.
Will take a much needed break and I’ll dive into the third of the trilogy.

JRPG Masterclass
Trails in the Sky returns with yet another amazing entry that should serve as an example for any studio aiming to create a great JRPG. Let's dive into the good and the bad.
The Good
- Excellent characters: I can't emphasize enough how special each character feels. Trails in the Sky SC does its best to give all of them equal spotlight, making each a potential fan favorite.
- Compelling storyline: The narrative has its fair share of twists and turns. While it can feel a bit slow at times, the buildup consistently leads to something so engaging that it pays off in the end.
- Fun gameplay: The gameplay offers decent depth, especially considering the time of its release. While it’s not groundbreaking, it has plenty of charm.
- Great music: The soundtrack is excellent, though I wish there was more variety. Most of the OST is carried over directly from FC.
The Neutral
- Reused assets: About 80% of the game takes place on the FC map, and most enemies are palette swaps of older ones. Personally, I didn’t mind, but I know some players care about this kind of repetition.
- Abundance of dialogue: There’s a lot of dialogue. I’m listing this as neutral because it’s a matter of personal preference. Personally, I enjoyed it, but I understand it could be off-putting for some.
- Side quests: These are hit or miss. Some are genuinely fun, featuring witty dialogue and interactions, while others feel like filler, boring fetch quests that can also be hard to locate.
The Bad
- Underwhelming villains: While their motives are valid, they all follow the same pattern of saying, “Oh wow, you might be decent, too bad I wasn’t even at full power,” before retreating. This undermines the power scaling and makes it feel odd when you eventually beat them.
- Lack of guidance: The game NEVER helps you. It's unforgiving when it comes to earning BP through hidden quests and choices, and rarely guides you to your next destination. However, I guess this is to be expected for a game from 2006.
- Missables and collectibles: There are a LOT of missable items and collectibles, some of which are extremely hard to find. Achieving 100% completion without a guide is nearly impossible. In fact, I strongly recommend playing with a guide, it enhances the experience significantly.
Conclusion and Personal Thoughts
In my opinion, the positives heavily outweigh the negatives in this game. It isn’t perfect by any means, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. If you enjoy a good story and turn-based combat, this game is for you. Otherwise, you might find something more suited to your tastes elsewhere.

The Second Chapter of Trails in the Sky provides a complete story and some spectacular views.
I came into this game without knowing much about it and I had heard about it somewhere. And I'm glad I did get it. It was one of the kinds of games I enjoy. Long games, and world building and good dialogue - not to mention that turn based RPG games are my style.
It's meant to be one long, long game (Trails in the Sky) but was broken up into two for that same reason.
It's a little older, yes, but it still works well because the dialogue is good. It's followed by several games in the same franchise (I think 10+ games and counting). Its immediate successor is worth playing, I think - but slightly different than the first two.
Recommended if you like turn based JRPGs.
I'm an old timer thats played hundreds of rpgs over the years and I find this game way to hard , Even on easy mode some of the main battles took too long and very frustrating. Some bosses never run out of healing power and just drag on until you run of healing and one of your party member is dead. Graphics were great but not game that i will play again.

Its peak... The Sky arc became one of my favorite RPGs :)
More of the 1st game with slightly better combat. Some sidequests were a bit of a chore but otherwise its really good.
The crown jewel of the wonderful and special Trails in the Sky trilogy. The centerpiece, the payoff, the "it was all worth it" part. FC and the 3rd can still stand shoulder to shoulder with SC thanks to their individual strengths, but this is indeed the game where most people come to stay impressed, making it the safest recommendation with the widest possible appeal.
The most important thing to be aware of is that it starts slow; much slower than FC, arguably, since you make another round around the same locations. Dozens of hours are spent on building up the antagonists and their mysterious plan, interspersed with more side quests about routine bracer work. They’re great, memorable, badass antagonists that gain a lot from their gradual introductions, yet it still might fall short of your story-focused expectations, especially if you already have glowing reviews like this one on your mind.
However, those who persist through the 1st half will be rewarded with possibly the most thorough and impressive 2nd half in the genre’s history; a total masterclass on how to resolve plot threads, conclude character arcs and deliver on foreshadowed promises. Adventure, romance, drama, tension, twists, tragic backstories, scheming masterminds, convoluted politics, epic confrontations, satisfying conclusions and perfect sequel hooks – this story has it all, and it does it all beautifully.
The endgame is particularly spectacular, starting with a multilayered political face-off where conversations feel more dangerous than any battles, then delivering on the key mystery with bold and thought-provoking sci-fi themes while also giving a perfect closure to every single participant’s personal story.
The final chapter is also where the combat peaks (not that it was bad before, just more limited) as you finally get the full party and access to all magic. The only weird thing is that due to some balancing mishap the cheapest spells still remain more useful than most high-tier spells, but regardless, every key boss battle feels just as epic and thorough as the stories surrounding them.
The cast is varied, likeable and utilized to its fullest potential. Everyone is given their time to shine, no one is forgotten, yet nobody turns into a "me too!" parrot like it often happens in more recent Falcom games. Estelle is an incredible protagonist, and it’s a true pleasure to watch her gradual yet unmistakable growth. The Big Bad deserves a special mention too, neither a cackling JPRG madman nor an oh-so-sympathetic victim of the circumstances but a chilling, intelligent, sadistic schemer who can put the party on the brink of defeat without personally lifting a finger.
Even if you’ve already been burned before by "it gets better later" recommendations, I’d highly encourage you to give the Sky trilogy and SC a chance. It really is a gold standard of how to deliver on your own story’s promises and turn an unassuming start into something truly special.
Honestly if you made it through the first game with the absolute bombshell of an ending and it still didn't made you want to immediately jump onto this game then this is not for you. I had the ending of the first linger in my mind constantly while I was on a 6 month hiatus until I couldn't handle it anymore and went ahead on continuing the series. All I can say about this game is that its peak character writing and the absolutely highs of this game blows everything out of the water compare to any other JRPG in terms of use of music and writing. Listening to the OST months later has only made me get magically transported back into its world again, something only the original FF7 has achieved. In a year where Persona 3 Reload, SMTV Vengeance, Metaphor Refantazio, FF7 Rebirth, Infinite Wealth and the return of many older JRPGS like Suikoden/Eiyuden, Romancing SaGa and the many that is too much to list. This game was my favourite that I played this year. It is a masterclass in terms of world building.
What a truly special game. If you are reading this there's a very high chance you have played through the first game of the series, and if you did, I'm sure you don't need a review to know you need to carry on with the second chapter. Everything I loved from FC dialed up to 11. More of the great world building, characters, fun battles and great music creates a full package when taking the first game into account, and what an epic this tale has been.
I did EVERYTHING in this play through. Spoke to every NPC upon every dialogue change, collected every item, got every achievement. My total time was about 144 hours playing on hard mode, so even if you take out the side content you don't really need to do (I highly recommend you do to get the most out of the game), you are probably looking at 70+ hours of pure story.
Please give this a go if you have the chance and this sort of game interests you, even if FC left you wanting a bit more I can ASSURE you this game will blow you away. Onto the third!

One of my favorite games of all time!
Trails in the Sky is one of the greatest games ever made and this is literally just a continuation of that game right where it left off in the story. You cannot skip Trails FC to play this.
This second chapter is significantly longer and more difficult than the first. The chapter may seem impossibly hard at first for those playing on hard difficulty, but that is only because the prologue of this chapter is basically filling the role of a difficult skillcheck. Beat that and it will feel like playing hard on the first chapter again.
A worthy sequel to the original
Rolled straight in from FC, Loving the world and the characters so much. This game is now my new happy place.
I do not cry easily. This game, with its wonderful world and characters brought me to tears. It has cemented itself as one of my favorite games (and stories) of all time. How could I not encourage others to dive into the incredible world of Zemuria and in particular the kingdom of Liberl?
