Описание
The Hong Kong Massacre,

This was a lot of fun!! It's a lot like Hotline Miami, just less 'refined' but with more style and flair.
It has problems, sure: the story sucks ass (still have no idea what it was all about even after finishing the game; some kind of gang revenge story), the boss fights are identical and uninteresting (shameless reskins of a corridor shootout with minor changes), some jank can ruin good runs, the soundtrack is just OK, and the game can be trivialized a bit by 'abusing' the slow motion once you get into the flow of things.
However, when it's good, it's real fucking good! To pull off the perfect level - precisely timed slides and dodges, near misses in slomo, bursting into a room and taking out 5+ enemies each with a single perfectly placed shot - all just feels so damn good!! It also looks amazing! Art design, lighting, particle effects. All of it! Same as with Hotline Miami before, the one-hit-kill for both you and the enemy really adds to the tension and excitement; you really need to learn (and even master) the layout and flow of a level to get that perfect run. The game also doesn't overstay its welcome. Took me about 10h to 100% the game. Can probably be finished in 3h or so without focusing on achievements.
HOWEVER, I would strongly suggest focusing on the achievements, as I think it adds to overall experience. I would not have enjoyed the game half as much without it. Or rather, focus on one achievement in particular: "A master at my skill", which requires all challenges to be completed. Each level has three identical challenges: (1) complete the level within a given time limit, (2) complete the level without using slow motion, and (3) complete the level by only hitting enemies (no missed shots; perfect accuracy). Each of these challenges require a completely different approach and skill set. The first requires speed; finding the prefect route though each level (however, of the three, this is by far the easiest). The second requires reflexes. The feeling of clearing some of the later (more difficult) levels without using slowmo is exhilarating, and really requires mastery of the game's mechanics and flow. This is where the style and flair really shows! The third requires precision. Not a single bullet may be wasted, so mapping each level - enemy placement, patrol routes, locations of windows and doors, when to dodge and strategically use slomo to avoid incoming fire - is vital to pulling this off. It's like a puzzle really, and requires some planning to pull it off. For me, the sense of satisfaction and achievement from completing those second and third challenges far exceeded that from just completing each level using whatever means necessary.
Had a lot of fun with this, and can definitely recommend!
PS: The 'Hard Boiled' (complete the first day without dying) and 'Just Another Day' (complete the first and second day without dying) achievements are also a lot of fun! Very anxiety inducing, but oh so satisfying once you pull it off (TIP: it doesn't matter in what order you do the levels, as long as you complete all of them in succession without dying. Start with the second day, and work your way backwards)
PPS: Something that made quite an impression on me - and is also unique to this game (and sets it apart from its contemporaries) - is the dodge mechanic. The game is not designed in a way that allows you to 'prevent' all incoming fire, which means it's imperative to master this mechanic. Not only does it add to the style and flair, but it also adds another layer to the puzzle. It requires you to keep track of two things: (1) when to start the dodge to avoid incoming fire, but also (2) predict when / where the dodge will end to avoid being hit when becoming vulnerable again. After starting the dodge (animation), you can't affect the movement path until the dodge in completed, so if you "come out of" the dodge at the same moment that a bullet reaches the that position, you're dead. Really liked this mechanic. Requires some awareness and planning.
Hotline Miami by way of John Woo. A little janky but it's tough, fun, and very stylish.
The short version
Performance: No crashes, ran well, music sometimes cut off and there were a few bugs
Price: very overpriced, buy on DEEP sale, or don't bother
Gameplay: 6/10
Story: 5/10
Lore: 5/10
Level Design: 6/10
Overall visuals: 7/10
Music and Sound: 6/10
My rating: 5/10
This game is MEDUIM, just like the difficulty in the menu.
It is also (unintentionally?) funny with its ragdoll physics. It has style and nice effects and a neverending slew of bad game design decisions..
I have a lot of hours in the game, because I decided to 100% for some strange reason.. Don't be like me in that regard...
Pros
- Yes, the effects are nice, especially in slow motion
- Going for "perfect aim" level achievements made me feel like "hunting" the enemies, which was nice... until the armored enemies showed up.
- The main menu, story cutscenes and the game overall has a nice style
- Ragdolls are very funny and can go crazy
- Animations can be funny, the protagonist can just visually aim behind himself at times, which looks super wonky
- Lightly desctructible environment - you can shoot through doors and even destroy them
Cons
- Lots of typos, just like "MEDUIM" difficulty..
- Mafia enemies have reaction time and aim of special forces.. Game is built around using bullet time
- There are like 4 music tracks, that loop in levels and that is it. 2 of them are nice.
- Weapon upgrades require stars, which are earned by finishing a level within a given time limit, "perfect aim" which can be messed up by enemies dodging out of the way and.. finishing a level without going into bullet time, that the gameplay loop was literally designed around... "Leveling" would have worked way better in this game..
- Shortcuts in the menu mostly don't work..
- Main menu can bug out... To the point where starting the game will lock you in the options menu... and the only way to fix it is to restart the game..
- Really bad achievements.. particularly finishing perfect aim in every level, bosses don't count.. and the 10k kills grindfest.. 10 BLOODY THOUSAND ENEMIES, IN A GAME, WHERE THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF ENEMIES IN THE BIGGEST LEVEL IS LIKE 30 AT BEST!
- There are bosses in this game.. in a game, where you can "mostly" one shot and kill and vice versa... bosses have a healthbar and you are tasked to run in a straight line, avoiding their fire, while also killing their goons.. now here is the kicker.. if you hit them.. THEY DODGE OUT OF THE WAY AND KEEP GOING! Meaning they break the rule of the "hardcore" game, by effectively having multiple lives! At the end of the straight line, there is an arena with an extra weapon.
- There are also "mercenaries" that have "body armor"... which in this game means, that they get a free "get hit and dodge".. aka they have 2 lives. There is a way to insta kill them by pointing a gun at their head, from point blank range and even invalidate their "dodge out" by being literally next to them, but it's just BS either way. These enemies are the worst for "perfect aim" level stars...
- The protagonist cannot get body armor himself..
- Ragdolls are very funny, in a game that is trying to be serious...
- Game doesn't have a custom mouse cursor, which ruins how cool the main menu looks...
- Animations can go whack, the protagonist can just aim behind himself at times and it looks goofy, enemies can do the same. Again, the game is going for a serious tone here.
- Shotguns can hit you even from the next rooftop... stupid range.
- Controls are wonky.. I got stuck in a corner a lot, without even realizing until a laser perfect special forces goon shot me across the room. Too bad I wasn't a boss, could have just dodged the bullet out of my system. And like 10 more too.
- Enemies react when you see them on screen and are in their line of sight. Dead bodies, gunshot sounds, blood, bullet holes.. all of that doesn't matter to them, unless you are in their line of sight. Or shoot in a room where they are in. They also have eyes in the back.
- Game also messes with the steam overlay... Sound stops sometimes too.
- Enemy dodging animations can sometimes reset, mid dodging.
- Also, dodging has a delay and won't activate at times after a dodge, or during bullet time...
- Enemy dodging animations can sometimes reset, mid dodging. So they sometimes shoot, dodge, dodge cancel, shoot again and dodge again...
- There is no friendly fire here... which really sucks, considering some dudes have shotguns... Shooting also doesn't work sometimes...
[*]... there are red barrels and clear explosives... that never trigger...
I played over half of the game on MEDUIM difficulty, without using the bullet time.. in order to get the level stars, to upgrade the 4 weapon types.. made the experience mostly worse, than what it would be if I just specialized on one weapon and focused on having a good time and get through the game..
It felt more enjoyable to play at night, when the events take place.
In Conclusion
It can have it's moments, both nice and hella funny, but overall it's just not worth it.
If you still decide to buy this game (on a deep sale I hope), then here are my recommendations to at least somewhat enjoy the 2 or 3h of the games' length.
-Focus on 1 weapon for upgrades, or lower level upgrades for all guns
-play the game at night
-use the bullet time ability and enjoy the effects
-DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, DECIDE TO 100% THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for reading!
FOR 2 DOLLARS ITS A MUST BUY. UNLOCKING ALL THE UPGRADES FOR THE GUNS MAKES THE GAME EASIER. ACHIEVEMENTS WERE FUN TO DO, GAMEPLAY IS SOLID, DURATION IS ABOUT 4 HOURS TO COMPLETE THE GAME AND 12 HOURS TO UPGRADE EVERYTHING, AND 15 HOURS TO 100% ACHIEVEMENTS. ITS TOP DOWN MAX PAYNE!
For some reason it's not fun.
Shows how difficult it is to be John Wick and appreciate more what he does for our entertainment.
Slow
After every level I yelled "that was awesome"
hotline miami wishes it was this good
If you like games like (PartyHard-HotlineMiami-Hatred) you going to like this one, wasnt dissapointed recomend
Quite interesting mechanics and quests. Pretty brutal
*flying-kicks down the door and shoots 3 guys in slomo*
Its like playing through a Hong Kong action thriller. Its looks really good and the music is fantastic (srsly let me buy the soundtrack). Its challenging like Hotline Miami. Takes a little getting used to but after a couple levels its feels great. Some stuff can be a bit dodgy and the interface has its quirks but it doesn't get in the way. Melee would be nice but the gunplay is good enough I don't need it. The gameplay could be tighter but it still sets up some great moments. The cutscenes are weirdly good.
You can pick up a weapon mid-dodge roll like you're Neo in the Matrix. Destruction looks great, just like an action film, and is satisfying to use to your advantage. Muzzle flashes look amazing, especially the shotty; its like expelling a tube of fire. Its the closest thing to a John Wick game out there.
All these neg reviews are mad cuz bad or are hating on it for being a Hotline Miami clone despite it being the best one so far.
Good gameplay, good music, no story, just enjoy the killing
This game just needs more. More enemy variety, more interesting upgrades, more development time. it simply needs more. 4/10 What it does well it does really well but the missing potential killed this game for me.
If you are persistent and enjoy dying hundreds of times per minute then go for it
The game is a series of short action-puzzles in style of "Hotline Miami" crossbred with "Max Payne" (has bullet time & dive shooting). Could benefit from higher contrast & less visual bloom, but still rather satisfying to play (that's when you win of course). Simple yet effective.
It is alright the most fun I got was comparing my fastest time on a level with other peoples time, but other than that its is a simple run and gun game.
If you loved the gameplay of Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2, please get this game. The gameplay is authentic, the story is good, the plot is good and the guns are hella sick to play with. I wish there was more guns and a longer story and levels or even a workshop but even without those, this game is a banger. 9/10!
Fun!
functionally the game is really not good. shots really often go through enemies and some of the level design is just bad. had potential
Hotline Hong Kong
Can't really say this is a bad HM game because it's fun.
Though it has it's own issues such as that
- you have upgrade your guns to increase fire-rate (rifle for example is slow without fire rate upgrade, but after upgrading it's actually fun to use)
- you can't hit enemies out of your field of view, even though there're arrows pointing their locations
- if you didn't like windows in HM2 - welp here's a lot of them, and you'll be in dive mode more than you think
But even with these issues it's still fun (except doing perfect aim challenges cause they suck and fighting bosses, but they could be cheesed)
However it's lacking good solid music and throughout 30 levels you'll be hearing at least 4 same tracks in first 4 days and only a couple of new tracks are added on 5th day
Story is simply boring, so I didn't bother watching cutscenes
If you like Hotline Miami and Max Payne 3, then buy this game. It's that simple. Hong Kong Massacre blends the arcade feel of Hotline Miami, and the brutal slow motion gunplay of Max Payne 3 and Stranglehold. Sure, it is pretty barebones in terms of weapon selection, and level variety, but don't let that or the unnecessarily negative comments prevent you from having a good time. The flailing bodies flying through windows and shattered doors in the midst of a shower of bullets while the music attempts to sedate you into a state of focus is all the satisfaction you'll need from THKM. A sequel would be wishful thinking, but it definitely has a solid foundation to build from.
P.S. I own this on PC, Switch, and PS.
John Wick meets Max Payne. Fun game. Can be hard but enjoyable
complete the new game already
if u want to kill urself go ahead and play this stupid ass game
Its random shite
Cheap Temu knockoff of Hotline Miami.
fun and rewarding game, i would recommend this game if you are a fan of hotline Miami or top down shooters in general. great score, solid graphics, very few weapons is a negative,
the mechanics of the game are great, im enjoying learning to master the john woo style dive.
Game captures the hong kong action movie scene of the 90's - you can roll, drive, slowmo etc. Game is quite hard even on easy mode. You can die in one hit but also one shot kills.
If i could use steam ratings i would give it a 75%. Game can be picked up quite cheap on sale.
Made by a small dev and the small cutscenes didnt really add much to the story plus dieing 30 times while trying to kill 10 guys early on can get a bit annoying. Using the slomo function helped the game click for me.

hotline miami 3D
its a movie
it has more of a movie feel then a fast-pace game like Hotline or OTXO(on the topic of movies, one of the John wick movies did a scene inspired by this game).
- the game is painful sluggish in comparison to Hotline Miami and OTXO (i'm a big fan of those games), most of my deaths are from slow bullets, the bullet is sooooo slow slower then a Ghast fireball from Minecraft ,to avoid dying from bullet (except shotguns) walk in a straight line or dive (you can't move mid dive/slide) if you dare and zigzag for 1 second you'er dead(because of the slow bullets).
- dumb 3 star system , star 1- complete in under required time, star 2- don't use bullet-time/slow-mo ,star 3- perfect aim soo no shotguns or any auto weapon, so you can't have fun unless you want to play with weak weapons.
- some enemies can prefire and dodge-roll ,windows are shit because you need to break them first to shot through'em, no melee at all if you run out of bullets and can't find a gun you're cooked.
if they remove the star system then it will be WAY BETTER
i kind of wish i can refund the game but i got it in a discounted bundle long ago so i can't, i may change my mind once a complete the game, so ill edit this later.
until then its a 5.5/10 game at best
sorgy i'm not first England .
update 1:
the game is an RNG fest the painful kind,
in a mission you will have to jump(dive) from building to building and 3 enemies spawn on it in a random formation between 5 or 4 forms,
they have a
- shotgun (shots are almost instant hits and big spread),
- smg(has fast bullets and high rpm)
- and pistol (has slow bullets not a big deal),
every time i jump the building i get shot at in like 5 frames of seeing half of their body in the middle of the jump so i can't really move as soon as i land the i-frames from the dive are gone and i'm at the mercy of the RNG of:
- the spawn formation (you can't see all them from the first roof, you NEED to jump to the other),
- the shotgun fucker missing or shooting late/or early,
[*] the bullet spread is soo fucked (the shotgun can quite often miss at around 5 meters! ) even pistol can miss!.
the cooldown on the dive is really long you can't dive as soon as you land on the other roof, so you better hope the i-frames don't end while you are in the middle of shotgun blast, sometimes they can ignore the i-frames and shoot you mid-air!
It's not bad at all, could use some balancing on some levels, but it's manageable. I rarely got shoot out of screen, which is pretty rare for this type of game. Good job there.
Chaotic scenario destruction, MUZZLE FLASHES™, split second decisions, lots of slowmo and buckets of blood, John Woo would be proud.
Can't wait for Vreski's next FPS game.
Double A game for simplicity, graphics, and movement within the structure of the game.
It's core aspect of bullet time hell is amazingly well done. The only cons to the game is that every scene almost feels the same. You come out alive somehow or absorbed a shot so fast you died.
Yet, every time you sense an enemy NPC not paying attention. You're ready to go all Boon Dock Saints on him
It must feel like the rush of a Dark Souls game player feels or people had when playing Max Payne.
Oh, and on medium, I'm having a blast. I haven't upgraded a weapon yet because it's fun to challenge yourself, because why not. It's hard.
Great concept. Great direction for such a simple game. These are the titles that hook you on Steam.
Far too difficult to be fun.
Fun game, challenging too but with good graphics. Seriously though, no cloud saves! That kind of absurd and I don't want to have different progress when switching between machines
A mix of hot line miami and sleeping dogs. combat is pretty challenging, although i feel a bit unfair on some maps due to the camera, unlike hot line miami the camera is fixed and cannot be panned to see the enemies that are a bit further away, this makes it so that the enemies that are outside of the visible area cant be seen or killed until its too close, adding to that the enemy markers sometimes disappear making you think that they are dead when its not the case. Other that the issue with the camera the game is great, is challenging, fast and fun
THE GOOD
While you have the guns akimbo, just blasting through the level, the game is amazing. Honestly, slow-mo halts the pace too much. Luckily, you don't have to use it! Except...
THE BAD
The game has a very simplistic challenge system for each level. You get a star for each challenge you complete and you don't need to do all the challenges in a single run. You use the stars to unlock and upgrade weapons. The challenges:
* time limit,
* no slow-mo,
and the bane of enjoyment,
* perfect aim (literally no shots that don't hit an enemy)
Time limit is fun. No slow-mo is actually my preferred mode of play. Perfect Aim, though? It takes away all the action from the game, prevents you from making a single mistake, and basically forces you to use slow-mo because without it the enemies are indeed too fast for you to deal and I mean that not as a challenge--you have to be able to headshot three people across your whole screen with 10k DPI or something (unless you want to play extremely lame and spend 10m per mission). On top of the already-unfun premise of the challenge, some enemies just randomly do a roll and become invincible. Imagine going through a level, everything going perfectly, and then some asshole just rolls the exact moment you shoot. You can't bait them to roll either because there is no consistency to it. So, yeah, Perfect Aim sucks big time.
NOT UGLY!
But that's only for completionists and achievement hunters, isn't it. If you can just, not care about those, then the game is genuinely, incredibly fun. Does it get repetitive? Yes, because the gameplay loop is simple. Does it get boring, though? No, because simple it may be, it never gets dull with the difficulty ramping up at an enjoyable rate.
I Wish we get a third person game..this graphic is insane!!!!! Very recommended!!! its like John Wick Hong Kong Version!!!
.
I'mma just assume this game was inspired by Hotline Miami. And I really hope there was never a "Hong Kong Massacre" irl.
The Hong Kong Massacre is a great game with a nice spin to the Hotline formula. However, I wish the game had more variety, as most mission objectives are getting to point A to B, with B being where you kill the final boss. Alls I'm saying is some variety wouldn't hurt. A mission designed like the game police stories would be neat! Something where you don't know what's behind doors and only your line of sight is visible or a slow-mo event would be neat. Unfortunately, none of this is possible, as the basic consensus I got from the community is that the devs have abandoned this game due to the lack of updates —And I gotta agree because them Blue Lock Season 2 cut scenes, aren't it!
The game clearly needs some polishing, and if it had some voice line and extra sound design, I'd honestly play it more and not exclusively on my Steam Deck.
*For the record, this game's like $5, and I'm pretty early on in the game rn
John woo + hotline miami = hard difficulty castration, Chow yun fat must have played on easy
fun. environments could be more destructible (doors and windows only, it seems...despite the over abundance of wooden creates and canisters, that in any other game would be explosive....none of these in-game objects are interactable). Boss A.I. are identical and painfully predictable and all boss-fights are identical.
If you're good at top-down shooters and only require one-two playthoughs (on medium or hard) to master levels like these, then you're looking at 1-2 hours of gameplay. If i could compare the gameplay to anything, it would be Hatred with better graphics, non-destructible environments, a slightly more complicated (if not overtly generic) narrative (as opposed to Hatred's "kill everyone and destroy everything"), and less fun. I didn't really "feel" anything when i killed any of the henchman or the big bosses...as opposed to other games (Miami Hotline or Hatred) in a similar genre in which there seemed to be actual emotional weight (whether it be pleasure or remorse) when taking the life of an NPC, let alone a boss character...one would expect that to be more the case with tale of vengeance such as this one...but unfortunately no.
despite all of these grips, i will still give this game a positive review because i played it from start to finish (an unfortunately rare occasion these days) and enjoyed myself while playing it. that being said, had the game been any longer - i would have found it too repetitive. For those gamers who don't necessarily excel in this genre but still enjoy playing, you can probably squeezer 5-10 hours of gameplay. Honestly, skipping the cutscenes will not detract (and perhaps even add to) the experience.
If i could rate this game out of 100, it would be a 65=worth playing if you love the genre but overall and unmemorable experience. Furthermore, i would wait for sale or purchase the key from 3rd party as this game is surely not worth more than $9.99 (i.e. i randomly purchased it as part of a bundle in order fulfill the minimum game quote and to get another game cheaper)
I like the fast pace, quick restart and shooting stuff
mid hotline miami , better graphics but worse gameplay AND ''lore''
Great combination of John Woo movies and a top-down perspective, excellent bullet effects, please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD fix the fact that it says "meduim" as one of the difficulties.
dog shite
fun
PEWPEWPEWPEW!!!!!!!
Mix of Hotline Miami and Max Payne
Pretty fun! beat medium, and thought it was plenty hard enough. Got the game as a 30 for $30 deal, so definitely worth the money then! I enjoyed playing it between work calls or while waiting for some other event to happen
