Best Multiplayer Horror Game best machanics Best tools Perfection :)
After years playing this game.. Is the game fun? Yeah. But it has so many issues.. each patch feels a brand new issue comes up causing players to crash their game if not their entire PC and it becomes really frustrating. The Christmas event for 2024 feels LAZY! It's just a re-plastered Halloween 2024 but even more annoying. Crash when playing Campsite. Crash when playing Lighthouse. Crash when closing the game. Game goes into not responding when opening the game. I'm not playing Life is Strange, INDIKA or Horizon Zero Dawn graphics.. why does this game chug and eat so much CPU but i can run other games fine. Yes it'll probably be fixed in a few patches.. but this year for events has been disappointing.
Campsite has been giving people issues for the longest time especially with Snow. Lighthouse is newer and there's a few places your character can get stuck still if you make it in the truck without crashing. They'll fix it temporarily a few patches later but then it'll break again when they add alterations to it.
TLDR Version:
- Maps are bugged and cause crashing frequently
- Opening and closing the game causes non responding or crashing
- Limited time events are the lazy work. After 4 years it feels dissapointing.
How to get the ''Doom Slayed'' badge quick and easy:
1) Put the difficulty on Custom and chose ''Apocalypse 3''
2) Go to 6 Tanglewood Drive, have 0 items equipped (except the base ones you can't get rid of) and start the game.
3) Enter the house immediately and wait for it to hunt, and just hope you have a Demon. If you don't, repeat these steps until you have a Demon.
Hope this helped you get the rarest achievement in Phasmophobia. Happy hunting!
As someone who's put in the hours and tried to adapt to Phasmophobia's quirks, I can't help but feel let down by the game's overall design and polish. Mastering the game is rewarding, but precisely after digging deeper, you'll find an ultimately unrefined and often frustrating title that fails to live up to anything worthwhile.
Phasmophobia feels like a prototype that never fully matured, or a demo stretched too thin. Many ghosts share similar patterns, and when they do try something unique—like the Wraith's teleportation or other specialized behaviors—most these mechanics end up feeling unfair or inconsistent rather than challenging. There's no satisfying sense of discovery, and the mechanical puzzle-solving is too shallow; it's mostly waiting, trial and error, with a lot of inconsistencies along the way if you're not using evidences.
[hr][/hr]
The game's evidence system itself quickly feels shallow. Collecting clues is a mechanical routine rather than an engaging and dynamic process. You're essentially rotating through the same handful of tools — EMF readers, UV lights, spirit boxes — just waiting for something to happen, with very minor variations between them, such as switching to UV if you hear a door. Despite having numerous ghost types, most of them feel interchangeable in this regard, relying on the same handful of generic evidence items. There's little in the way of interesting traits or unique behavior patterns that would truly differentiate one ghost from another, even if you're playing no evidence contracts. All this leaves the game with a lack of gameplay depth or variety.
Here's a concise example of poor design in Phasmophobia: every ghost has traits that can help identify them. This is particularly important in "no evidence" contracts, where (with one specific exception) evidence tools cannot be used to determine the ghost type. This is great! However, other than some traits being simply inconsistent or cumbersome to test, there are ghost traits that depend directly on timers, which the game doesn't provide you with at all. There is simply no in-game way to tell the passage of time, so you have to rely on external tools to keep track of ghost behavior: LiveSplit, a phone you can quickly juggle between, etc. This not only breaks immersion but also throws a challenge that the player has no in-game tools to deal with, unless you're good at counting up to 300 seconds in your head while multitasking 2-3 other things. You also can't customize the pool of ghosts, and neither the game nor its developers support or encourage modding. This could be solved by adding a stopwatch item to the game.
I assure you, there are many more examples of bad design in Phasmophobia, such as limiting the number of photos you can take (also the tier 2 camera delay after taking them), but I'll leave it at that.
Basic quality-of-life features are missing or badly implemented. There's no proper hotbar, so you're forced to juggle items with the scroll wheel, which is awful. Sprinting mechanics are clunky; 'toggle sprint' remains active even after your character depletes its extremely short stamina. Until very recently, joining private lobbies was needlessly complicated, using 6-digit codes (that's 1 million CONCURRENT lobbies — up to 4 million players connected in multiplayer!) rather than taking advantage of Steam's API. It's baffling that a game so engaged with multiplayer makes such simple tasks feel so wearisome, with microphone levels resetting every time you enter a new lobby, etc.
Phasmophobia's older maps, which constitute the majority, show very little effort in environmental storytelling. Sound design is mechanically poor, with transitions between exteriors and different floors being extremely noticeable. These shortcomings undermine what should be a core strength of a horror game: atmosphere.
[hr][/hr]
In the end, Kinetic Games has failed in coming up with dynamic systems or combining the existing pieces into an orthogonal design, which would have made the game more engaging and replayable. The game's core loop is repetitive and lacks depth, and the game's design often contradicts itself, leading to a frustrating and unpolished experience.
Phasmophobia is a game that can be fun to learn and play with friends, but that's generally despite its design, not because of it.
Entered nightmare mode with a buddy for the first time. Ghost hunts immediately, my friend dies faster than we could scream like lil girls. I dive into a closet to hide, almost sharting myself from fear. Brother snores next to me IRL. Ghost comes after me faster than puff daddy itself, Closet doors fly open. Dead.
Highly realistic ghost game. 10/10, would let my brother's snoring get me killed again.
Was a really simple and honest good game but no longer as enjoyable. I wish the original was still available as a classic version. To have everything reset is upsetting especially when you don't see the updates as improvements. Could still be a good game if someone hasn't played the original state of it.
I have withdrawals every time I turn the game off.
Definitely not as fun without friends though, the more the merrier. I'd suggest getting the game at the same time as a friend or two and learning the ropes together.
With over 65+ hours in Phasmophobia, the game evolves from a simple ghost-hunting experience into a test of strategy, communication, and nerves.
For seasoned players, the initial fear of the unknown transitions into a thrilling challenge of mastering ghost behaviors and perfecting hunts. The unpredictable AI ensures no two investigations are alike, keeping the tension alive. You develop a deeper understanding of the tools, from the EMF reader to the spirit box, and learn how to adapt your strategies based on ghost type and map layout.
The cooperative multiplayer aspect remains a highlight, as it fosters teamwork and often leads to hilarious or terrifying moments. The gradual addition of new maps, ghost types, and mechanics ensures the experience stays fresh, even for veteran players.
However, familiarity can sometimes lessen the fear factor, especially once you’ve memorized common patterns or optimal strategies. But the dynamic scares, atmospheric sound design, and the thrill of high-stakes hunts continue to provide plenty of adrenaline-filled moments.
Phasmophobia is a deeply engaging horror multiplayer game that remains rewarding and fun even after dozens of hours. It’s perfect for those who love a blend of strategic gameplay and supernatural suspense.
Very good game to scare friends. Ghost hunt me so i put Arab music on to annoy it before it kills me! Good game I recommend getting it for how cheap it is.
I love this game. very entertaining and fun-scary. If you're looking for a scary game to play with friends, this is it.
I really thought that panic-smudging simple ghost events twice only to be hunted two seconds later (now out of smudge sticks) and die in the middle of edgefield livingroom where you´re crouching, lights off and hiding in brain malfuntioning terror (and plain sight) would be a thing of the past with 139h in the game but no. Apparently it's not.
Although! I've actually have made it out alive once or twice lately so yay me!
Being as abysmal as I am at Phasmophobia and STILL enjoying it this immensely truly says something about the game.
game is so fun, and so funny to play with other Friends. Its funny that we all scream like we are todlers :)
I used to love this game but atp it is WAY too difficult even on the easiest difficulty, and only rewards sweats , sorry
[Gameplay]
It's fun (rather creepy) to play, better with friends in Multiplayer mode. There are many options to set the game how you want to play it.
It's creepy enough to feel the fear or just getting scare for moments. I wish we could expel the ghost, not only identify it. It has a little 'addictive effect'.
[Story]
The situation is always the same: You go into a house with an evil ghost and you have to find out what is the type of the ghost.
But it doesn't have any special story, you just go in and do your tasks.
[Characters]
Though it has characters which you can play as, but you don't get any information about them. Actually they're just for the players to have appearance in the game.
[Graphics]
At the first look, it looks good, but to be honest it feels poor work. The environment is not bad, but the characters, the reflections, the photos of animals from the reality.... The animation is also low category, holding the item always with straight arms and the broken spine position when you're looking up...
[Music]
It doesn't have music (except the musicbox) but the sound effects are great, make the mood more creepy. It'd be better if there were more, various.
[Difficulty]
It's easy to learn how the game works.
The difficulty depends on the settings. It has basic setting levels and custom mode, where you can customize the players', the ghost's and the other settings about the contract.
Shortly it has more difficult, easy and harder too.
[Technical Performance]
I think it runs well enough, had some bugs before, but fixed now.
Loading screens can be longer if you have lower-end PC.
[Value for Money and Updates]
It's a little bit expensive at full price, I'd recommend waiting for sales.
Developers still take care about the game and make patches.
[Overall and Personal Opinion]
I love this game, the experience of the gameplay compensates the low quality graphics. The idea of the identify of the ghost and the various types of them are great.
One of the best multiplayer experience, I recommend it!
I've played many horror games in my life and almost none scares me or gives me jump scares. But holy shoots... this game has it. I don't know why and how the devs managed to pull it of, but this game is actually fricking scary and I sh*t my pants all the time.
I love it and playing with friends makes it way more fun (and a bit less scary).
Mad probs, actually a very good and immersive horror game. *shaking* Thumbs up! *shaking*
If you love scary games that keep you nervous the whole time, is definitely worth playing. This game doesn’t just rely on sudden scares—it builds a creepy atmosphere that makes you feel uneasy from beginning to end.
The game’s settings are really well done. Whether you're in an old haunted house, a creepy hospital, or a dark forest, the places you explore feel real and scary. The sound of footsteps, creaky doors, or a strange whisper all add to the feeling that something's about to happen.
In terms of gameplay,Phasmophobia mixes solving puzzles with surviving. You have to manage your resources carefully while trying to figure out what’s going on. But what makes it even scarier is that you’re never sure what’s real and what’s in your head. The game messes with your mind, keeping you on edge.
The sound design is another thing that stands out. Every sound, like footsteps or creepy noises, makes you jump. The quiet moments are just as terrifying, making you feel like danger is waiting around every corner.
There are a couple of downsides. Sometimes the game can feel slow, especially if you’re someone who likes more action. And the puzzles can be tricky, which might frustrate players who want a simpler experience. But for fans of horror, the slow build-up just adds to the fear.
Overall,Phasmophobia is a great game for anyone who loves to be scared. It’s not just about monsters—it’s about making you feel tense and worried the whole time. You’ll keep thinking about it long after you’re done playing.
I wasn't sold on this game at first, but I think I wasn't playing it with the right people. I found a great group of friends to enjoy it with and now I even enjoying playing it alone. It balances supernatural horror and logical puzzles well and has enough opportunities for variance in gameplay (challenges, custom, etc.) that it's really your own fault if you can't stay entertained with it. Truly a game that I've come to love
This game is simply amazing. I think the only thing it’s truly missing are more fluid animations coming from the players and ghosts (ie when the ghosts appear and disappear, the death animations, players walking and interacting). But besides this the concept and gameplay immersion is fantastic. Adding an additional phase to the missions that require an exorcism on the spirits could be great too, just like how you might see a traditional ghost hunter do on television or in the movies!
The best ghost-hunting game i've played. Maybe graphics and optimization are not that good, but the gameplay is awesome
Phasmophobia is a unique and exciting ghost hunter game. It was one of the first games to let you and your friends team up to find and identify ghosts, and it has inspired many other similar games. Since it first came out, the game has changed a lot—and all for the better!
Now, there’s a new leveling system, lots of cool tools, and many new types of ghosts. These additions make the game even more fun and interesting. It can still give you a good scare, especially when you play alone!
One of the coolest features is that the game can recognize your voice, so you can actually "talk" to the ghosts. This makes the game feel very real and adds to the spooky atmosphere.
Playing with friends makes it even better. You can work together, share clues, and experience all the scary moments as a team. While there are still some areas that could be improved, like adding more maps or fixing small glitches, Phasmophobia is a great game for anyone who enjoys a good scare and likes to have fun with friends.
In short, Phasmophobia combines teamwork with spooky thrills, making it a fantastic and accessible experience for players of all ages.
Lots of jank and small issues, but the amount of fun it provides overrides those fully.
It constantly gets updated and expanded upon, so it gets even better with time, albeit a bit slowly.
A perfect game to boot up with your friends for a chill, but the same time, spooky and thrilling experience from time to time. Multitude of unique mechanics make it fun for prolonged periods of time. It's also suitable for solo-play, which usually makes the experience significantly more scary.
Can't help but recommend it.
A bit expensive for an early access indie game, but has more soul and thought put into it than any AAA ubi-slop. Definitely worth the asking price.
Still scares the crap out of me when I'm least expecting it. Love it. 10/10
I would highly encourage this game, as it is exquisite. I recommend playing with fellow foes first to get used to the video game. You acquire knowledge and gain higher rankings (levels) throughout your journey. You could play single-player, or you still have the option to play with friends. In summary, I highly recommend this video game to people who've friends who are into paranormal activities.
Wonderful game for a horror genre and nice work for hunting ghost. Beware of mimic tho. Just watch out when they mimic a Deogen to a Revenant.
a GREAT game to play with friends, always laughs and jump scares. It does tend to get a bit boring as you get to know the ghosts. I think a change in ghosts would be great.

After following Phasmophobia's development and watching some gameplay videos since the start in 2020, and buying it two years later in 2022, I finally started my personal ghost hunting journey in the fall of 2024. :D
Phasmophobia is a very impressive experience considering it's humble origins as a one-man project. Its instant success and role in shaping the whole genre is a bit of a Cinderella story.
Phasmophobia brings you the definitive, authentic ghost hunting experience that you've always craved. Bring a couple of buddies to share the spooks and to make it a bit more Scooby-Doo-esque. I was also a bit surprised about how well it worked solo – and how much more unsettling being alone in a silent house with a murderous ghost is.
The start was a bit rough, as you have to conduct the investigations with minimal gear and minimal knowledge of what's going on. Though to be frank, me and my pardner in crime did skip the tutorial (which I do recommend you partake in). After a dozen hours you slowly start to grasp how everything works and what some of the ghosts' different quirks are. Depending on the amount of mystique you want to maintain, the wiki can lift the veil a bit on some mechanics, potentially improving your efficiency and survival rate markedly.
After forty hours it feels like I've gained a bit of a grasp on ghost huntin' and have seen the majority of what Phasmophobia has to offer. Though I have yet to unlock most of the higher tier equipment, which I am looking forward to doing. The map pool is also of a decent size, with some maps being huge enough to really benefit from having some co-investigators.
I'm looking forward to seeing Phasmophobia develop and maybe eventually even leave early access(?!). But in its current state it is already a solid, spooky, fun and innovative co-op gaming experience.
8,5 / 10
While not having played as much or as early as most, Phamophobia has caught my intrigue with its astounding gameplay mechanics and tactical usage of the tools that you are presented with. Moreover, I have thoroughly enjoyed playing this game with my friends. Therefore
Phasmophobia is way too scary for me. But it's commendable that the developers continue to provide free updates which showcase their love for the game.
Easily my favorite game to turn to after any work day. Single Player, Multi-Player, even jumping in to watch seasoned streamers become hesitant van squatters. Phasmophobia has been a delight since it's inception in 2020, and to its credit, continues to actively improve and challenge its participants in hunting an all star cast of ghosts in an ever growing list of haunted houses, and inhabited establishments.
I love it! This game is scary and funny St the same time. Constant Patch Updates, events and other fun stuff like Easter eggs added to the game are making it very interesting and you don't really get bored from playing it. Another cool addition to it is that you can play it in VR. But the best moments can be captured if you're playing with friends. Then this game is 10000/10!
mfw i only listen to the part of my playerbase that sweats the game and completely ignore the casual playerbase that feels like the game is next to impossible to progress in because the free equipment is dogwater and you have to memorize how each of the like 28 ghosts act during a hunt to survive it
not even playing with friends can make this bearable, it was such a good game until the overhaul update like 2 years ago that completely ruined it by making it way too hard for casual players. you shouldn't need to be carried by advanced-level players or spend like 8 hours looking at guides just to get started in a game and not immediately fail. if this is the experience for so many casual players, you don't have a case of a few players being bad, you have a game where it's just unenjoyable to be a new player so nobody wants to start your game. incredible game design honestly
Wonderful game...Scary at the start w/ lots of small details to learn & master as you progress.
Always look forward to playing w/ new people & glad the console launch has positively brought attention to the game again

Pretty complex, you have a lot to learn about all of the entities and how they manifest, their weaknesses and stuff
The jumpscares are really good and well made, not those lazy ones that just jump in your face
I found the shop and layout menus a bit tricky, but I can be a moron sometimes so that might be on me
Pretty intense atmosphere at times, which is great

It was bad enough losing all my levels and achievements, but the worst part is how broken this game has become. I used to love it, and I had so many hours in with friends. Now the ghosts don't correlate with the evidence they leave, the load out system is completely incomprehensible to use, and I can go 20+ minutes without any kind of evidence at all--or get so much contradictory evidence I can't even advance in the game. I would love to reach out, but it's impossible to talk to development, and the discord server and forums just ignore or play down the issue that the game is broken. I won't ask for my money back because I have some great memories, but for now, I think I'm going to have to uninstall. Thank you for the good times! Let me know if things every get better :)
Pretty good game with updates coming every now and then. Massively improved since first release.
It is kinda repetitive if you're playing alone. Investigate, avoid being killed, guess correct ghost. Repeat.
Playing with friends brings a bit more chaos and fun into the game, especially if they are scared-
7/10 Spookies, you'll still be able to sleep at night. Chases can be intense since the ghost can hear you and sense your flashlight. During chases you essentially have no team communication without the cost of getting the ghost closer.
Super fun detective game with strong horror elements,Best enjoyed with plenty of friends in a dark room.
Once I learned everything needed to play, phasmo is a lot of fun. By far my favorite non-shooter game. There are glitches but they are within what can be expected from an early access game.
It does have major downsides:
The biggest problem is the game does not completely explain how to play. You need to go to third parties to get information needed to play anything less than full evidence. A lot of the base items for finding evidence themselves are not properly described anywhere ingame. Many ghost types are described badly or flat out wrong. The progression is strange but the developers have said they're going to fix that.
None of this will matter if you just want to occasionally run around a haunted house with your friends getting spooked. Anything more than that, You will need to do research.
I rarely give out reviews, but here i think it's a must.
I understand the concept behind the grind, and it's fine, but for a casual player - one that jumps to this game once in a while it's just not fun. All the items that made the game more interesting (like incense) are locked behind a grind wall.
I wish there was a 'party mode' where you can actually just jump in and play whatever you want, without countless hours of grinding.
I understand my review won't change much, but i just needed to get it out there.
I loved the game before the grind update, but with my limited time it's hard for me to fully go back
I can't come up with anything clever for this review, but this game is as hilarious as it is terrifying. Poop your pants and cry-laugh about it. Bring your friends.
Phasmophobia is the perfect game if you’ve ever wanted to scream like a toddler. The graphics and scares are great, and your friends will absolutely abandon you in your moment of need (and you’ll do the same to them, it’s fine) It’s like playing Ghostbusters but with less science and more running for your life. Highly recommend if you enjoy panic attacks, dark hallways, and a complete lack of teamwork.
Clunky control system and generally just...not fun? Like it has some great jumpscares on the rare occasion, don't get me wrong, but most of the time is just...like the worst detective game ever. Ghosts will spawn in but not leave any of the clues that tell you which one it is so you're on a map for like 45 minutes going "is it this? ok but it didn't do this so it might be this? but what about this?" until you get bored, guess, leave, get it wrong, and go "what the fuck". Not one I recommend, even with a good group of co-op buddies.
very fun game, def a learning curve to it but once you understand it. It's great.
This is what happens when an indie dev doesn't listen to the community and applies favoritism
I started playing this game a few months after the release and i really loved it. But after hiring new staff it slowly became worse with each update, i'll list what are, in my opinion, the main issues with this game:
Balancement and grinding : More than an year ago the game got reset because of an update featuring tiered items, the problem with that was that you needed dozens of hours to basically go back to what you where already using before the update, and each update after that made the grinding for these items slower and slower, basically making the new player experience unbearable. At the same time it became a lot more difficult because they made the ghost abilities much more confusing and pushing for looping the ghost around tables instead of finding hiding spots or anyway trying to stay away from the ghost.
Community and content creators : Because of the grind most of the casual players were pushed away from the game, and the remaining part of the community became an elitist mess who discarded every type of criticism and just told to new players to "get gud" when they said something against the confusing gameplay loop or about the ghost abilities that did not praise the developers or the game. Meanwhile thanks to some youtubers and QA testers it was discovered that the developers themselves only listened to their close friends instead of the community as whole, they allowed some official content creators to abuse game bugs to have an advantage and reacted poorly to the criticism of each one who wasn't their friend.
Lack of updates and shortage of staff : The game sold a lot of copies but the main developer never hired more than 3-4 people because he said i wanted to keep his "vision"of the game, the game though suffered a lot as a result because of the extremely long time between each content update, at the moment between the two newest content updates has passed more than 1 year and recently we only got a poor Halloween event and the console release that if they don't hire more stuff, will mean an even slower development of new content, as is said though, the main developer is too stubborn to hire new stuff and to listen to the part of the community that criticizes the game.
All things considered this game is on a collision course with a really sad ending, that it could only be prevented by developers and community listening to each other, but i don't have much hope that it will happen.
I want to thank you if you read my review and i hope i helped you in deciding if you want to buy the game or not, i'll write a small TL:DR on the bottom.
TL:DR: The game is not user friendly, requires a lot of grinding to get the best items and the developer don't listen to the community and make blatant favoritism.
So in the early access the game was fun with all the equipment and playing with your friends without these level up your items bullshit and now its feels too stupid to grind this type of game where you just came to enjoy with your friends and i don't know why or how the dev thought like putting up the idea of leveling up to get better gears would be an awesome idea. So yeah its just ruined now.
