・A New Open World Warriors Game
For the first time in the series, the expansive land of China is shown on a single map with the introduction of an open world format for diverse progression through the game. The 'one vs. thousands' exhilarating action of the Warriors series and the beloved characters from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms tale are carried over, but the freedom through an open world stage provides a brand new Warriors experience.

Key Missions unfold and progress the story of the player character, and are supplemented by numerous missions from various regions such as Regular Missions that affect the Key Missions and requests from other characters. The situation will be ever changing depending on what missions are selected. In the many battles that occur on the map, players will find a variety of strategies and tactics open to them such as "attacking head on," "launching a surprise attack from an elevated position" or "infiltrating at night", for numerous ways to enjoy the expansive world of the Three Kingdoms.

The map is displayed with beautiful graphics and features many different regions of China such as snow plains, jungles and deserts which reflect the passage of time and changing climate. Key cities and checkpoints, such as Luoyang and Hulao Gate, and landmarks such as the Yellow River and Mt. Song, are replicated, allowing for deeper immersion into the game world.

・A Redefined Action System
The new State Combo System reacts and responds to the surrounding conditions, building up on the base Warriors action system. The three core elements are: "Flow Attacks" that change depending on an enemy's state; "Reactive Attacks" that optimally adapt to situations; and "Trigger Attacks" that change an enemy's state.

The addition of Interactive Action allows players to take advantage of the surrounding terrain and environment. In addition to climbing mountains and swimming across rivers, using grappling hooks to climb walls and launching fire arrows into oil barrels to induce explosions are among the new actions for broader strategic gameplay.

・The epic tales from the Three Kingdoms through the eyes of new and returning officers
Experience the Three Kingdoms story woven through a vast roster of characters. Seven new officers (Cao Xiu, Man Chong, Xun You, Cheng Pu, Xu Sheng, Zhou Cang, Xin Xianying) have been added for a total of 90 playable characters; all 83 officers from the Dynasty Warriors series return, with new costumes.

Barely polished, that's my biggest problem with this.... The franchise's all about endorsing characters so poor open world design could be redeemed, but almost none of the aspects were polished enough to charge a full price. At best it feels like open beta or something. And yeah, I'm beta for 100%ing this shit
gud
its an awesome renovation of DW i love it
I cannot in good faith leave a good review for this game. While I'm sure the graphics and optimization has improved, the game can no longer be played with a controller. This game is extremely difficult to play on keyboard, and now no controller works anymore for the game. Dev's MUST fix this issue!
Changed review to positive from negative.
I have added a control configuration for XBOX controllers which seems to fix the control issues I was having with the game. There IS a good game under all the jank. I also recommend changing the language in the main menu to Chinese.
The english sounds like a bad dub and should be avoided.
With these two things in place it's actually quite an enjoyable Dynasty Warriors, if not a lot different from the others.
If you picked this up on sale, don't give up on it just yet, try the fixes above.
very idiotic game ( 2 hours trying to solve the issues of the controller or even the keyboard it is not playable)
Graphic setting can't be changed
No solve working tried everything and still community says it is player issue the game is not wrong
they even say xbox controller is cheap controller you have to buy logitic controller
community trying to attack anyone say a negative thing about the game even if it was true most of the time
I love dynasty Warriors. I played it all my childhood, but this is a letdown
0/10 not worth it
Not bad
Game got way over hated imo, it was the first time (& now only time) KT did a open world like this for DW & what they did with what they had is good, all i can say is play it for yourself & think yourself bc i didn't get DW9 for years bc of what others said & i regret it.
Very boring
It's terrible in so many ways, and I knew that before I bought the game. It has the hack and slash action that I was craving, so $40 for the complete package was fine for me. If I didn't already play DW8 to death on both PC and Switch then this would not have been a good purchase - I just wanted something new.
The worst part about the game has to be the inscrutable pricing scheme. I hope Origins improves that situation. I'd like to just buy a game without having to worry about packages and what's going to be released later.
The combat works about as well as any DW game. The open world was neat, though poorly implemented. The material gathering and crafting seemed to exist only to justify the open world. The voice acting was awful, especially compared to DW8. The cutscenes were lackluster. It was a very disjointed experience overall. You almost certainly shouldn't buy this.
Fun but too boring to finish every character story line.
This Game Fun As F**K, Just Play It Haters Will Hate.
I Can't Wait To Put A Ton Of Hrs Into Dynasty Warrior's Origin When That Drops.
So For Now I'll Play DW9 Till Then. STOP HATEN!
Recommend only at or below $20.
An honest review from a fan who tried to like this (summary at the bottom/end):
Having played Dynasty Warriors (DW) since 2 or 3 (I forget which) and having DW 4 be my favorite until I played Dynasty Warrior 8-XL, I looked forward to this release. However, as the reviews were so far below my threshold, I hesitated for a while. Here we are almost 7 years later and these are my thoughts for anyone interested in this after 2024.
The best of this edition lies in its maps and visuals. If you have ever wanted to explore any of the maps from previous Dynasty Warriors (or China ~2000 years ago) then you will enjoy this game. The ability to casually approach battles and not have to rush everywhere is great. The scale is sufficient to reflect the actual distances between locations/events, however this can also be a weakness if you enjoy the play style of previous iterations. Heck, you can even cross the rivers by horse instead of the ferry to get an idea of the massive size of the Yangtze and Yellow rivers. Or explore the borders of the Chinese territory, left mostly unexplored and full of wildlife.
That said, with this vast space comes opportunities for optional missions (side quests) and ingredient farming. Imagine Assassins Creeds ability to explore the maps, including the watchtower map reveals, combined with aspects (that I have disliked) from previous editions that were at one point exclusive to the Empire versions; relationship building, housing, ingredient/reagent gathering, crafting, etc.
I do need to stress SIDE QUESTS, because by ignoring these optional missions, this game becomes closer in similarity to its predecessors. If you max out your horse speed, skip side quests (they don't have a scroll symbol attached to the main objective), and don't bother detouring for animal hides, minerals, gems, herbs, and lumber, this is basically DW ... 7?
The battles do not feel as intense as what DW 8-XL managed to do. The showcased scale is greatly held back by BUGS THAT HAVE EXISTED SINCE LAUNCH . During most "sieges" you are better off finding a way to scale the wall and opening the gate yourself from inside as: 1) your allies will 50% not do anything, 2) the siege equipment will bug out, OR 3) the AI will endlessly spawn. Better yet, give yourself a challenge and take the city by defeating the officers without said allies. I am pretty sure you could, in 1 mission, ignore the objectives and defeat every single enemy outside of the main conflict, and have it not matter later on.
Speaking of allies, in some other editions, they actually helped or gave reasons for holding defensive positions. Here they mostly just sit around until you show up, at which point they don't always help as for some reason they refuse to advance even if you eliminate all minor officers (assault captains) in-between the major ones.
Back to the battles/missions. What I DO like is that if you enjoyed saving or completing every minor objective in previous editions (I am talking to those of you who actually try to unlock the secret missions or alternative timelines), you know have an objective tracker which you can follow. Completing these sub-missions (different from side quests) you can weaken the main mission objective (think a level 20 Cao Cao instead of a level 50 Cao Cao). This is because instead of the giant red/blue morale bar in other editions that shifts in either direction (which does not have an impact on your allies in most editions anyhow), completing each sub-mission instead prompts you with an enemy main camp morale drop, reflected by a drop in their level.
The combat system is different from DW 8-XL. There is no Musou Rage (sadly), but the combat flows better and chains are vastly easier to continue. The ability to deal finishing blows is great, and makes what would otherwise be a 3 minute beat-down of an closer to >2 minutes. That is my favorite improvement of this edition, though I do miss the Musou Rage, and feel that the Musous' themselves have been greatly weakened. Speaking of Musou, they are lack luster in this edition; or maybe the enemy reactions and feedback system make it feel that way. Either way, they severely lack that punch I expect a Musou to have and feel much more generic between characters. Also, good luck completing a synergistic Musou with another officer. Finally, my biggest gripe here is that the old combo system is gone, and you basically just smash one button all day. No more light attack (x 3) followed by a heavy attack (x 1) for a flaming whirlwind of death combo.
Looking at the story, I greatly appreciated that it better reflected the actual events they are based on. Although, some of the cut-scenes are entirely unnecessary and were honestly better told via the old text based method (which is still mostly there). This however may be a reflection of the character models feeling very stiff (in-game/real time cut-scenes are reflective of playable character movements). The animation of the models feel the same across the board; Xiahou Dun feels like Guan Yu, who feels like Zhou Tai, who feels like Gan Ning; all stiff.
Now for the WORST aspect of this game. This is micro-transaction HELL and if Origins does the same shit, I am out. Do NOT buy this game at full price. They took all the money, invested it into selling you more bullshit, and left all the bugs as they were from day 1.
In summary, I couldn't get into this game as much as DW 8-XL. However, if you have always wanted a Dynasty Warriors game with a more casual, slower paced style, and a more accurate story telling, this is the edition for you.
If you STILL want to play this game, do these 2 things:
- Get the anime horse and max out the speed. Otherwise, expect to spend 50% of your game time traveling.
[*] Don't spend more than $20 on this. This includes the price of the base game with 1 of the "special" editions.
Great game! The open world is well done. As an officer you choose whether you want to "simulate" additional battle fields within a campaign (doing optional campaign quests, or even side quests) to reduce the difficulty of the main campaign quest. You may as well just do the main one. It's up to the player to decide the amount of side battle fields and hence this choice combined with an open world give a nice feeling of "simulating" this era in a musou style! And I rly can't complain about weapon variety. It's great to be able to decide your weapon of choice. Sticking to your officers main weapon is for nostalgia is not forbidden ;) The story is splendidly written and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is amazingly delivered! Also: Chinese Voiceover!!!
My verdict: 9/10, buy it on sale. Not sure if I would pay full price, but everything under 30€? Gladly! :)
I think these games are a blast and always have.
I don't understand the hate, but the game is actually pretty good. I invested 300+ hours on this game without using Fast Travel and I find the open world very relaxing. I do agree a little bit on the Open World setting to be empty, but I don't find it bad. If you want to give this game a shot, I recommend you to play your favorite Officer from the start to the end. Here's my full review below:
Combat
- Obviously, DW9 combat is WAY better than the awful Rembu System in DW6. I've experimented a lot with various items, but I find the Fine Bag of Wind, Gold Crown, Mirror of Transformation and Pike of Judgement to be the best. The combat is fast paced, intense and fun. However, I find Hard difficulty easy, so I crank it to Ultimate after leveling my characters 10 levels above the enemy, and equipped with EX Weapons.
- The Flow and Reactive attack system is so engaging, it compensates the cloned move sets. I never expected how much fun playing as Sun Ce and Wen Yang with the bad weapon choices Koei Tecmo gave them.
Open World Traversal
- In my perspective, the main goal of the Open World system is to relax, relieve the stress of the fighting, and travel as you see fit. The game is NOT forcing you to manually travel every time you need to reach the next objective. All you need to do is to travel and discover the location, I don't get the hate. It's not that bad.
- Most of my play time was travelling by manually or auto-run with a horse, it was relaxing.
- Too bad there are not enough Towns and Peasants in this game to explore or discover, and that's my only complain about the Open World map.
- The Open World causes the Battle of Chibi to be slightly broken. Ready your Exploding Arrows and prepare on defeating Cao Cao in the water lmao
Content
- In Story Mode, you play as the Officer beginning with their service to the Kingdom up until to the end when they died or retire. That means for example, you play as Liu Bei from Battle of Yellow Turbans to the Battle of Yi Ling, that's long.
- Side Missions' battle for some reason, are fixated in 2-3 different locations outside the City, I find it annoying but it kinda works.
- Officers level up so fast on higher difficulties, it becomes easier when you get the hang of it.
- Hunting is fun, but the Bow camera sensitivity is a bit broken.
- Music Playlist is a bit broken, when I tried to reset the playlist to default, it plays the playlist again.
- Needs more Side Missions, but its alright I guess.
- It lacks Legacy costumes, too bad.
Graphics
- I don't care much about the graphics, I find the game beautiful.
Verdict:
To be honest, this is now my 2nd favorite Dynasty Warriors game, 1st place was DW8 and 3rd was DW5. As a hardcore Dynasty Warriors fan, I recommend everyone to play this game and invest your time with your favorite character, ignore the bad reviews saying the game is boring.
I give this game a 8.5/10. I gave DW6 a 7/10, and that means this game is way more fun.
This game had a demo where it made a battle more epic than ever. now i have looooong commutes back and forth between mostly minor battles.
This game is horrible.
Fuck this game. The only thing it has going for it is that it tells the 3K story with the most detail but the price is that most cutscenes consists of people just standing around talking like fucking dolls. Skip this mess and see ya in Origins instead.
Not their best work, but still fun to play if you utilize the fast travel.
i decided to give Dynasty Warriors 9 another shot after trying out Dynasty Warriors Origins demo... and yeah, it's legit trash. the game barely runs at 40 FPS on high-max settings, sometimes dropping to 23 FPS even after all that patch, not surprised at all that this game is Koei Tecmo's biggest flop. also the controls in this game are straight up garbage and if you don’t have an Xbox controller or any controller and try playing on a keyboard, good luck because the keyboard controls are total trash, Origins handles this issue way better.
I've wasted 300 thousand rupiah for this shit.
gamenya masih oke lah cuman open worldnya masih banyak yg tempat sepi trs kosong gitu
I have played every dynasty warriors and as a romance of the three kingdoms fan I have to say its not a bad game, it tells the story pretty good. I like the open world but i like mmos and big maps to explore.
Dynasty Warriors 9 is underrated. As you will hear from other reviews, Dynasty Warriors 9 strays too far from the franchise roots that many fans were massively disappointing. I agree and prefer previous games (especially Dynasty Warriors 8), but I still like Dynasty Warriors 9 too.
The best way to describe DW9 is you take what worked in past games and toss them out the window for some unknown reason. Open world just don't work. I understand that the Romance saga from Koei probably play some role to how they want this game to be but musou is not a strategy game and will never be that. They wanted a map with a bunch of active battle, problem is story is downgraded. It also don't help that for an open world game the world look super bland. For years fans has complain for no clone movesets yet it returned. The saving grace for this game is the characters design. To me it is their best looking version. The new characters is also a welcome edition. Of all the new era DW games meaning anything from the PS3 era and so on, this has got to be one of the worse.
DW9 brings Musou game to next graphical level. Very realism. I am not sure about previous comment regarding the fps issue. However for me the game runs smoothly locked at 60fps. The fighting very fluid and the whole experience during fighting very entertaining.
Tried so hard to like the game. But there's some questionable designs or bugs example like Wei from the beginning when starting to assault the Hulao gate. Archers and Engineers are spawning endless in the moat where you can't hurt them while engineers magically appear to built bowmen towers with bowman in it. That stops your NPC ramming structure from moving towards the gate. Remember the archers in the water(moat)? They endless shower you with AOE arrow showers. Of course you can grapple over the wall like a shinobi, but why? There's the movesets that are downgrades from all previous recent warriors games. The open world concept is pretty bad, you get fetch quests, attack this enemies here and there and most of the time you can't find the means to finish the side quests. There's a lot to Hate, so be warned. The trailer actually shows the best/better English voice acting in the game... do yourself a favor turn on your preferred subs and Japanese voice if you really ended up with this game. It's a 2 out of 10 for me. Even if it's free, don't waste your time on it.
Bland as fuck when it comes to game design. Insanely unpolished and runs poorly on the deck at best. Obviously the combat is the focus here - and the combat itself is actually quite fun and satisfying, but I do miss the XY combo strings. I think a real step forward was adding assault attacks as well. That all being said, the combat is like if someone removed the complexity and depth of Shadow of War and that's really disappointing. There's no free or other game play modes either which they trade for an infinitely playable story mode full of a lot of faceless quests and fluff. Since it is not steam deck compatible you have to kill a lot of the graphical upscaling in order to get anywhere near 30 fps and even then, often times I would crawl through battles. I did one play through with Ziahou Dun and then uninstalled it. I would play ANY available warriors game on Steam before even thinking about purchasing this and even then, I would only do so if it was on sale.
This game is absolutely amazing! First of all, the graphics are stunning, with beautifully detailed environments and vibrant colors that create an immersive visual experience. The gameplay is engaging and full of variety, whether it's solving puzzles or battling enemies, it offers a great challenge and keeps you hooked. The character development is also impressive, with each character having a unique backstory and abilities, adding depth to the overall experience. Plus, the sound design and soundtrack are excellent, perfectly complementing the atmosphere. Overall, this is a must-play game for both casual and hardcore gamers alike!
This is the greatest game in the whole main series of Dynasty Warriors. It goes back to the roots of flexibility from the first game, DW3. By that I mean you can go anywhere, ignore events and character fights, and explore or pursue alternate paths to victory. In DW3, the management of your armies by supporting their struggles and goals was critical. And those struggles were not always scripted missions, just fighting against the next enemy on the front lines. That is where you forge your own legend in dynasty warriors: saving friendly generals and taking out enemy generals as you see fit. This game goes so much further for the series by scaling difficulty of enemies by completing quests. So if going straight for the leader is too hard for you, you can chip away at defenses to directly affect the difficulty and indirectly through supporting your forces advancing. There are many side activities, but you are not forced to do them. They include stealth missions, puzzles, exploration, hunting/fishing, and character bonding. Fast travel makes the huge open map less daunting if you don’t want to walk or ride through in real time. The game has some bugs, like all the others. The combat system is the best in the series with multiple layers of elemental, counter, and special attacks. Highly recommend to fans. 10/10

Nostalgia for the game series kept me going mostly, buy on BIG sale otherwise don't.
This game as under went many updates and changes since the launch and is much better.
If you've played this game before then give this another try. If you haven't played this before then this will be very similar the previous games but all open world so no load screens except new chapters or cut scenes.
Major change from launch version:
Many many more enemies on the map. Before it was very empty and the major fights took place in a different load zone. Now there are groups of enemies all over the place and plenty of animals and bandits off the road to fight and even some smaller base checkpoints you can take over similar to the Empire games. And the major battles aren't in different zones so you don't transition to take part instead everything is already loaded in like an open world should be but the battles don't start until the player gets near the battle.
I love it, and I feel that the game has been unfairly judged by many reviewers in the past. Yes, there were initial complaints about frame rate drops, slow-loading textures, and a supposedly bland open world. However, many of these issues have been addressed with patches, and in my experience, they’re no longer problems at all.
The game was impacted by those negative reviews, which seemed to focus on minor imperfections more than the game's overall. It feels like some reviewers were nitpicking every small detail rather than appreciating the core of what makes Dynasty Warriors so enjoyable. Personally, I’ve had a smooth and enjoyable experience throughout, without encountering the technical problems that were originally highlighted.
I’m not even a huge fan of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, but I am a geek when it comes to Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I’ve read it more than twice, and I can confidently say that this game delivers a decent experience. While the hack-and-slash combat is as satisfying as ever, the game does a good job of giving players a sense of the warfare, and legendary characters of that era.
It’s sad to see how much sway these negative opinions have, Back in the day, we played video games because we loved the experience not because we judged them based on someone else’s opinion or technical minutiae. I wish more players would give it a chance.
KOEI TECMO took a shot at an open world DW game. While most of the open world is bare and barren the places where the battles take place are quite well done and every major battle has a unique area to explore. Honestly i give props to KOEI for trying something new, it is lackluster but still enjoyable.
The new voice actors well....... some do really well most others not so much i found myself putting on chinese dialogue and it made it more immersive. Every interaction is just them standing in one place and talking, no emotion no expressions.
Every character has a gimmic, some are old, some are unconfidant, some are over confidant, some a fast, some are stupid, benevolance this ambition that and it does get tiresome.
No character has a unique weapon as most weapon style are shared across at least 5 characters each, any character can equip any weapon, i ended up finding one i liked and just stuck with it.
Theres no real challenge to this game, soldiers are just mindless, offer no threat but it is enjoyable to watch your KO count skyrocket. Officers...... once you find out how to counter they are just a joke.
Most castles are copy pasted and with the grappling hook you can just blitz from objective to objective and have a stage done in less than 2 mins.
With all the flaws and barreness to the game, I still found it very enjoyable, having played through multiple officers, the collecting of resources to make yourself and absolute powerhouse, some cut scenes are quite well done. i went from place to place collecting ended up fighting bosses to summon, explored the Great Wall of China and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
I wouldnt recommend this game at full price even if youre an advid DW fan, grab it on special for sure though.
KOEI tried something new, it didnt work out, but hey give it a chance, you might find yourself sinking quite a few hours into it.
