Warning: Asset Flip!
Zomborg is a Digital Homicide style asset flip, or what Valve calls a "Fake Game". The "developer" paid for/pirated a few Unity asset store assets, dumped them all in a blender, and submitted it to Valve as if they're real game developers.
Two notable criteria for what makes an asset flip instead of legitimate use of stock assets are whether those assets comprise the majority of the game, and whether the "developer" properly credited the people who created most of the assets in the game. This game fails both of those tests. The "developers" here didn't credit any of the artists and real, actual game developers who created the assets here, so this is plagiarism, as well as cash grab shovelware.
In this case, the asset flipper took a bunch of Synty assets and dumped them lazily onto a top down twin stick shooter Unity template, with very little additional work put in. If you're a keen asset flip afficionado, you'll recognise popular Synty packs like Simple Apocalypse and Polygon Heist, to name a couple. Which I can do, but apparently the developers behind this would rather scam and mislead gamers into thinking that they were they ones who created the assets used in this flip. Dishonesty and plagiarism. It has no value or merit as a real game.
Zomborg is a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience, so I guess kudos to the "developer" behind this asset flip for slipping it through Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft QA, usually they're better at stopping this kind of intellectual and moral bankruptcy. Valve of course has no QA, so here we are with yet another asset flip review.
Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
The mismatched game assets are fairly mediocre/low quality, it's a wonder why they couldn't be bothered "borrowing" higher quality assets for this asset flip. This is a lot like going on a shoplifting spree but only stealing the cut price store brand goods. Regardless, the poor quality assets alone should be enough to deter gamers from bothering with this.
The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with.
Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 7 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
This kind of asset flipping isn't harmless. It makes it harder for gamers to find genuinely made games from ethical developers. It makes it harder for genuine indie developers, who put hard work into trying to make real games, to find an audience for their products. It gives indie developers a bad name.
So, should you buy this asset flip? Is this better than any of the 100,000+ genuinely made games on Steam? Of course not!
Zomborg has the far too high price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Just Cause 3", "Warhammer: Vermintide 2" or "Far Cry 3". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Well, the name says it all. Zombies and cyborgs (and robots too) are posing a threat in this post-apocalyptic world. It is your job to stop those behind these threats.
Gear up from an arsenal of weapons, and a potential buddy (AI teammate) or go in alone and wreak havoc against the hordes in this top-down third-person (ish) shooter.
Can you complete all 12 missions and save the day?
Fun game. Loved playing through this! If you are unable to get some of the gun achievements, just start again and buy them again, then it should pop.
You reload ur shotgun with 8 bullets even if u shot only once...
When you buy a weapon in the shop you get... the same sound that we get when make screenshot via Steam...
Also we have in this game incredibly bad AI that fits only for zombies, but not for your bodyguards..
No, it rly feels like a lazy project
Near the end of the game it's kind of annoying because you have to watch out for everything or get 2 shotted immediately and you can't buy armour or anything to counter that and plus there's no checkpoints so if you die anytime you have to restart the whole lvl, other than that it was a fun game.
Not a bad game, but the ESL syntax errors/akwardness of sentences makes me want to take a red pen to my screen to correct them.
I need joystick controller.
Your game good.
But it's PERFECT GAME.
If you add joystick controller.
GOD I HATE THIS GAME!
'buddy' ai is useless
sniper shotgun cyborgs with 99% cover from your broken guns 'only way to kill them is a hand grenade'
1 health pack and one ammo box for each map
The story is written by a 3 year old
no checkpoints on long maps
DO NOT BUY
Pros:
- Zombie Robots! (I wish they were from SPACE as well)
- Perfect usage for 5€
- Shooting zombies with guns
- Perfect waste for one extra hour if you have one
Cons:
- Horrible aiming system
- For basic survival set the option for transparency on (requires FAST computer(!(oh noes(how fast of a computer are we talking here, dunno)))....!). This option can be accessed only from main menu, so i could not try it out.
- Ingame money can be used for totally useless buddies whomst'don't'td understand basic concept of retreat, they just go straight to the mass horde of zombies. Yes, in the middle.
- No replayability
- No multiplayer
I played less than an hour but I already have enough clarity about this game's gameplay loop.
It is an isometric twin-stick shooter in which you play a soldier of your own creation, there's not much of a story, and the one that there is relatively compelling, without being nor too bad, nor something special, or unique.
The gameplay consists of going around open levels finding objectives scattered across them and interacting with them.
for the most part this objectives are the same and there's a specific number that you must complete in order to finish the mission.
For example, examine three tanks.
As for your enemies, you get zombies for the most part, zombies that run after you that you can shoot with weapons that you select prior to starting each mission, these weapons have fixated stats but the vast majority of them don't really feel any different from one and another, this is mostly because every enemy has the same death animation, in which the enemies just drop like rag dolls only leaving massive stains of blood behind that both disappear with the corpses almost immediately right after.
You also get grenades that you can use that send your enemies flying away, but you don't get to have that much control over when this grenades will blow up, you can't "cook" them, nor can you really aim them, you can only hope that the movement that preluded the throw will be accurate enough to impulse the grenade to land exactly where you wanted it.
However, given how fast the enemies are, the vast majority of times the grenade will explode after the enemies have started to give chase to the player even if the grenade landed in the exact place you wanted it to land in the first place.
Beyond that there's not much to say.
The character doesn't have different stats to upgrade, and it moves fairly slow, there's no sprinting in this game, nor there is any jumping.
The game also gets fairly repetitive given the issues that I've already stated above.
This game could've been so much better had it been given more freedom to explore the open maps, instead of creating blockades to prevent the player from reaching certain parts of these maps, the devs should have focused on giving the player a bit more freedom of movement, allow me to jump, run, and if not, at the very least add stats that increase my speed.
Also the weapons get old fairly quick after using them, either give me the option to keep the enemy corpses and blood on the ground for a while, whilst also increasing the spawn rate of the enemies, or alternatively give me power ups, or upgrades for my weapons that are either temporary, or permanent, in order to keep the game fresh, and fun.
I also would've really like if the game didn't ask me to go back and forward between certain parts of the map, given how slow the character moves.
After a while the boredom sinks in and I was just left with wonder as to why I even thought it was a good idea to have purchased this game, I understand it was an attempt from the developers at creating something good, but it shouldn't have been as limited of a game as it is.
devs have to know this sucks come on lucky i got for 50 cents ive made zombie games on lbp 2 better than this
- Quick little game
- Shooting mechanics are good
- The AI partner option is nice to have
- AI is okay not too smart
- The game itself isn't very interesting, it would be if it had some tactics to it
one of the first things i noticed was the buy sound is the f12 steam screenshot sound
but so far good game
Pros:
-Interesting/fun graphics
Cons:
-Plot is boring
-Objectives are repetitive
-Night levels are far too dark
-Aiming above ground level is broken
-Need to buy weapons in order to trigger arsenal achievement
i alt+f4ed instand when i got oneshoted from these shotgun cyborgs in the second mission
screen just says mission failed oneshot mission failed you know
you play a game wich comes to you like the zombie action shooter with infinite ammo a bit to slow movement
and then from one second to the other there are 3 cyborgs with oneshot guns sending you to the mission failed screen
i played a lot of games in my 20 years of gaming but this was just disappointing
Pretty dire, tbh. Guns are toss, partner AI's awful and has a habit of running into groups of zombies, and the third level's unfinishable as four shotgun robots will slaughter you before you can reach the exit. Don't bother.
Severely disgusting and awful little Top Down Shooter game. Graphics are cool, but even that have a issue: needs at least a I5 processor to run or will crash to desktop soon or later; an exagerate requirement for things shown, like flat colors with simple grey shadows. A lot of older products recreate much more with less hardware.
The mechanics is basic: player can carry 2 fireguns and 3 grenades, and thats all. Character haven't any skills, only can move, get mission objects and shot. Simple rules imply that a game is fast to learn, nothing more. But in this one have been implemented in the most restrictive and worst possible way. Indeed, looks like even an unfinished product.
There are weapons to buy, all with unlimited ammo, but reload is very slow, takes about 3 seconds, and it is too much ingame. The entire reload system is an illogical nonsense, because to recharge one shotgun cartridge require same time that a full reload, but sniper rilfes are more quicly to fire and reload that any other gun. The main, essential and most usefull weapon ingame is the sniper rifle; the others are expendable and decorative. There aren't hand weapons, neither any enhances or upgrades for equipment, like armour or grenades, and the worst, cannot buy and carry medkits. Player could have a lot of money by half of the campaign, but nothing to buy or do.
There are 3 companions to hire, with a different weapon each. Player can take with him one per mission, but are useless because are uncapable to defend themselves, so they just will die quickly if player dont care of them by giving orders like wait there or came here. As they are annoying and offers little help, is better go alone; so the companions system is a big bluff from developers. Would be better a coop system, but should requires redesign the entire product, by example adding more foes.
The damage system is evil. Character has a life bar, but it only can be seen when receives injuries, then dessapears. Seems unbeliveable but is truth: player has no way to know how much life his character have if not suffer damage. There are 2 kinds of enemies, common Zombies and other called "Zomborgs", that use hand weapons and fireguns or can explode. The first ones causes a bit damage, but the others are really dangerous: can kill player just with 2 shots, maybe 3 by finding the lone medkit that lays in all maps. Difficulty is based on this mixed with fact that cannot be save any progress at will, just automatically saves after finish a screen. A well knowed old dirty trick to enlarge playtimes by forcing to repeat full scenaries.
Gameplay degenerates into shootings between snipers from screen sides and corners to gain advantage, because armed enemies fires with remarkable precision from very far. And, as has been said, they can kill player easily, thats is the only way to prevent a premature dying. By half of campaign, player discover himself paying more atention to corners and borders of the screen than the zone around his character. This is opposite to the traditional fight zombie concept, not works, and ruin the experience. Common zombies loss their protagonism, reducing their role to roam in little numbers as easy targets or disturbing the player with attacks from their hiddings, likes barraks, tents or trucks. But only first time there are suprises, because always come out from same places, and are too few as to consider them a challenge or menace.
Lines of shot and move are constantly disturbed by obstacles that seems not to be so, even for the foes, that commonly shoot to solid objects or get stuck by everywhere, and the same happens to the player. By this reason, the grenades are very dangerous for the own player: can bounce everywhere cause the trajectories over objects are unpredictable, so them can use safely just in open places. Camera can be rotated, but the view angle is fixed, so tryng to discover the foes is uncomfortable in scenaries with high buildings and by night. There is a zoom option, but must be adjust at minimun to detect the snipers, player must force his view continously to see diminute targets, a pain for the eyes in night scenes. Move, shot and see ingame turns disgusting quite often.
An important parts of maps are shamely empty, as if they were left unfinished. There are 2 money bundles and 1 granades cache in each map, but aren't hidden: there is not reason for explore. First maps are linear, if player go out of routes, not found nothing, neither foes. The buildings are closed, like a cardboard set; player only can move in open field.
Players will die easily after half campaign, because just can make 2 o 3 mistakes against enemy snipers. To repeat scenaries is the only way to finish with this frustrating product; obviously the majority players dont do it. The evidence that all said here is truth: less of 3,5% of players complete the 12 maps. Why this piece of garbage have many good reviews? Surely they came from children that buyed it cheap, get free, or from developers with false profiles or from their family and friends, there isn't other logic explanations. The only sensate advice is avoid this. Or give away it to a really hatefull person.
Game that I would call pleasant in overall.
Not bad graphics, fun gameplay, story not too elaborate but interesting in its own way.
I recommend to be careful in "reading the story" because if you don't pay enough attention, you may be confused about who is who.
Some grammatical errors in the narration (at least in Italian) but I think we can "fly over" certain things.
Some imprecations here and there when you die randomly but I think this is normal too.
Game completed with all the achievements without particular difficulty and with tranquility in 5 hours.
The price is quite reasonable (€5), I would say a must for €2-3 if you want to have some "chill".
Pros
- Graphix are beautiful
- You get a companion
- Easy controls
- Teaches you how to play and easy to pick up
- Has its fun moments
Cons
- Too easy of a game
- No Coop what so ever
- Little choices on weapons
- No real challenge value
- Not controller enabled
- No vehicles we can ride in
- No Level generation so level stays the same and gets boring
- The game lacks character (other words this is pretty much the same as other zombie games and isnt really unique)
- No character social interactions.
- AI lacks intelligence
Would be great to see the characters interact with each other with some dialog. Maybe something dealing with the mission or something funny with a wise ass remark?
ill recommend the game, however, id like to see actual improvements to the game if you as the dev want more of a fan base instead of a quick buck. The better the game the bigger the fan base. remember that.
I enjoy with this game so much. It's a simple shooting game but very fun , beautiful graphic , I love small detail when you shoot something. Game is smoothy not lack for me.
Zomborg is a title that sadly lacks any kind of inspiration or creativity. https://youtu.be/dhD9COIQ2qA The atheistic is pleasing to look at but has been done much better by Running With Rifles before it. The weapon and character customization are mostly pointless due to boring combat and slow movement. The missions are very dull and lack any sense of tension or urgency. My weapon sound cut out regularly, and the reloads are painfully slow. Overall there is really just nothing here to keep someone engaged or from switching to a title that offers some real fun. The levels are some what inspired, and again I do like the art style, but even that is wasted with how far back the camera is zoomed.
