Super cute and engaging. I wish it was longer because I loved it so much but it was a good length for the price.
I'm drawn to witchy games like a moth to a flame and this game checked all the boxes.
• Beautiful atmospheric maps
• Fun and intuitive crafting system
• Humorous dialogue and banter
• Unique and enjoyable soundtrack
I'd say it is worth one play through and can't see myself playing it again for a while, but I'd recommend it to anybody who wants a relaxing spooky game to unwind with.
This got so boring so quickly. It is just constant fetch quests that treats players like they're dumb. The game also lacks polish in some areas that makes it feel unfinished, and seeing that it hasn't been updated in a few years, its seems like this game was rushed out and abandoned. To give it credit, the art style, some NPCs, some plot points, and the music is really charming.
-- Constant Backtracking --
To progress, you have to either talk to an NPC or interact with something in the environment that will prompt you to input a craftable or collectable item. If you've collected it/the materials to craft it, great! If not, you have to backtrack to collect everything. You often end up in rabbit holes of "I need to craft A for this quest, but B is an ingredient in A, but I can't craft B without C which I ran out of, etc". The problem is that for the 12 main quests, there are around 10 steps within them, and those 10 steps ask for 1-3 items. So at almost EVERY point, you have to backtrack to collect materials which constantly interrupts any momentum you feel in the plot. "Sorry NPC, I know we're on a mountain and you're scared right now, but I need to backtrack to 3 different locations because I need to craft this item because I need to craft that item because I need to craft this item. Sorry again NPC, this will happen 3 more times on our walk and totally break the immersion"
And no, you can't just grind for materials upfront to avoid the constant interruption to the plot. Some items are used very often, and some are used once or twice. It's hard to gauge what items are worth going through the time and effort to stock up on. And even when you play this way, you inevitably miss something and have to backtrack anyways.
-- Too many items --
Wytchwood suffers from having too many craftable items. A lot of them are redundant and should've been condensed. This would remedy the issue of constantly having to craft weird one-off items with a lot of prerequisite materials. This would also solve another issue where the game treats the player like a child and spells out answers for them. Instead of encouraging the player to think for themselves and say "hey I need feathers, I think I can get it by using a trap near a bird", the game has a button where you can hover over each mob/interactable to see what item is needed to harvest its material. I tried to play without this, but the amount of, and redundancy of the items, makes it difficult and a waste of materials if you guess wrong.
--Brain off lol--
There is a section with a riddle where instead of reading the dialogue and interpreting it correctly to progress, the HUD just tells you exactly what to do. This happens all throughout the game, leaving the player no chance to think about anything that's happening. You could just skip all the dialogue, follow the quest checklist in the HUD and finish the game just fine.
And before you think I'm being picky about wanting the game to demand more brain power and not just mindlessly collect materials for "puzzles" that are spelled out for you, the Steam description literally says "Use your wit and guile to solve puzzles and best the strange monsters of the forest".
-- Small things that make the game seem unpolished: --
- The control settings menu seems like a default Unity UI? It doesn't match the game at all and its overly complicated.
- While trying to press Esc I accidentally pressed tilde which brings up a debug console that displays errors and allows you to input commands. The commands you can input seem like developer debugging tools like changing scenes, displaying certain game info, etc. The debug also displays errors like how the barrels (like chests) are missing meshes or something and won't be highlighted. Barrels can be viewed with the 'hover over to display info' button^, but you can't actually open them as they aren't highlighted in normal gameplay. I'm guessing that like chests, there is just optional loot within them, but its still disappointing. The console displays other errors about invalid meshes and vertices, null references, etc. Besides the barrels. I don't think the gameplay is affected, but it seems like a mistake that this made it into the final game. I've never seen another game have an easily accessible debug log.
- The main menu has an out of place box in the corner displaying the build date. I had to go back and check if this was early access but it isn't. Like the debug log, I rarely see finished games with dodgy looking build dates on the main menu. There's even a (default Unity looking) feedback option in the settings? Why would a finished game need this?? It doesn't even work! The images are also compressed on the main menu and look bad when playing on high resolution.
- Excessive chromatic aberration, it becomes an eyesore after a while and doesn't fit the storybook vibe.
I really wanted to like this, but I can't recommend this game at all. I can't even say its good to play with your brain off and watch a video at the same time because its just that frustrating.
TLDR: boring but cute fetch quest
LOVED it, very fun cozy game! You gather materials to make more complex items, meet cute characters, and there are many different stories throughout the game.
Short game but fun! Tons of crafting and exploring.
Cozy chill-out game with a dark fairy tale vibe. Pretty simple to figure out and not too grindy on the resource collection. Good story, lovely art. Took me 18 relaxed hours to complete - you could do it faster but this is not a race, it's a ramble. It's not really re-playable, the story and quest is the same, but if there was a Wytchwood 2, I would play it.
Casual story and game-play. Good style drawing in the designs.
I love a lot about this game, and I super enjoy it. I've seen some people complain about backtracking (valid, there is a lot) but my solution was to just grind as much materials in an area as possible before moving on. Makes things go a little slower, but saves time in the future! Also, for people complaining about having to go all the way to the other side of the map, are they not aware of the portal system?? All in all, a fantastic game and I highly recommend it if you are a fan of this kind.
Very relaxing and fun game. Love the reusing of crafting items and that even though you move forward everything is still used in this game, even items from the start.
Oh my god that was amazing. I served justice and revenge, both hot and cold, just as deserved, without unnecessary forgiveness or by others´ hands. All by me, fair and square.
About gameplay:
- you have 4 simultaneous independent quests and you can go on one location for collecting/ interacting for two of them, which is very convenient.
- you dont have to manage the space in inventory. Just collect as much as you want and craft on the spot
[*]the game is pretty omg
Also, better not let your cat on the keyboard during the game. I had to restart the game bc somehow she broke navigation, and damaged the save.
short, but very well designed - art looks amazing and every character profile in this game looks different to the last one. i did encounter one game breaking bug but found a fix for it online so i can't really complain. def recommend!
Beautiful and unique artstyle. interesting storyline, and a much longer game than I was expecting it to be - I'm 3 hours in at the point of writing this and only a third of the way through the game. Can be a bit of a fetch quest at times having to run around getting ingredients, but once I got into the habit of stocking up on everything as I moved around it made it a lot more likely I'd have most of the ingredients required for the next recipe.
This game is weirdly relaxing, if somewhat repetitive, and amusingly irreverant. The quests are convaluted and require travel to multiple regions, so there is no such thing as a linear approach.
A charming, spooky adventure with a LOT of grinding!
Wytchwood has a great storyline with a hint of spookiness and I absolutely love it! The gameplay is all about helping townsfolk by solving mysteries and puzzles, which makes for a really fun and engaging experience.
That being said, BE PREPARED FOR A LOT OF GRINDING. You’ll be going back and forth between areas to gather ingredients for crafting, and sometimes it can feel like a pain. But if you enjoy collecting materials and unlocking new recipes, you’ll probably love that part.
The art style is gorgeous, and the atmosphere really pulls you in. Highly recommend playing with a controller—it just feels smoother to play. If you don’t mind the grind, this is definitely worth checking out!!!!!
A nice combination of problem solving, story telling, crafting. Relaxing to play
What a wonderful experience. Calming and triumphant. Yes, fetch quest galore, but the story and the art are beautiful, and make this far more than that one game mechanic.
The most precious little story game. A lovely balance between calming and engaging. Even knowing the ending, I think I will play it again :)
Loved this game! The graphics are lovely and I really liked how the story went. Would recommend, it's nice and spooky and I enjoyed the crafting element of it.
LOVED it. I would recommend but understand it is a gathering game with a lot of good stories and lessons. Try to gather more than you need because you WILL need more later. I really tried to gather as much as I could and still would get sent somewhere really far away because I hadn't grabbed enough. Even the really big hard to craft items, you will need more than one.
Loved it, played casually and I read every text box/ talked to every npc I could. Took me around 15h for 100% with all the reading and extra collecting. Did not rush. 10/10 loved it,
Just completed this game, and I really enjoyed it! Some things I really loved about it:
1. The art style - it's a beautiful game with a lot of really cute/fun characters
2. The sound design - every area has such a unique soundscape that really adds to the feel of the game
3. The story - it's a really well thought out and complete story! each individual section has such a thorough and detailed storyline, and it's really fun to see how it plays out
I don't really have any dislikes, it's far from the most complicated game I've played and that's one of the things that makes it great. it's not super long, it's well thought out, it's pretty, and it's very relaxing - I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a nice escapist game to play over a weekend or two!
Good game and story telling
Didn't expect that ending
Fun little game
The art was eye what drew me in in the first place
cute and very succinct, great art style and very easy to follow while also not feeling like its forcing you in a specific direction at a specific time.
I had a lot of fun playing Wytchwood! It was calm and cozy. I was able to turn my brain off after a long day. Based on the way the game and story are built, I won't be picking this up again in the future. This was a one time play through type of game for me.
This game is a really short collectathon style game. You go grind out items to make larger items for progress. That is the whole idea of the game. The story is interesting and the art style is so unique. I enjoyed it as a turn-brain-off style game.
Short and sweet. A good cozy game with a touch of eerieness and dark rituals that set it apart from the rest. I also liked the metaphors and character allegories incorporated into the story which added a good depth to it. All in all, I highly recommend.
There is a game breaking glitch that remains present about an hour after steam will honor refunds for the game. If you want to play, it's fun until you end up in an infinite objective loop.
This game was very fun, but it felt short. I loved the music and the graphics, but it wasn't really too challenging to complete. In a way I don't mind as some games i just get stuck on certain parts and cannot complete but I did not have that problem here....at the same time i could have had a few more challenges then what were presented. It was mostly just finding the right ingredients for the right spells to move the plot along. I could never get the map to work at all because the game would freeze up when I opened it...however I didn't really need it that much and was able to complete the game without it fine. I was kind of hoping for more plot once it was over however, the ending felt a bit abrupt and i guessing i was hoping there would be more of a twist or the story would continue somehow. Still it was quite visually appealing and enjoyable to play.
Great time killer if you're travelling or if you have nothing to do at home, but as a standalone game it's not very enjoyable. It's all about walking with little to no mechanics to keep the game interesting. There's LOTS of backtracking, and there are too little QoL to make it a bit easier. Yes, there's a market later in the game where you can spend money to aquire a few items like vases for example. Yet the assortment of these items is too little and it's still a bother to buy them (you an only buy 1 and need to click 3-4 times in order to get said 1 piece). If you like 'checklist' gaming then this is a game for you, but not me.
The game is artistically phenomenal and the world is very well made, yet as a game i can not recommend it personally. It felt kind of mind-numbing to walk around and collect stuff for around 20 hours. It would've been better to play this game in smaller sessions on my phone rather than at home on pc. Halfway through the game I found myself just forcing through the game in order to get it done with and that's not a sign of an enjoyable game. This type of game is for a certain kind of gamer which I do fit the description of.
A cute and cozy little puzzle solving game with a nice twist. Love it.
Absolutely recommend if you like collect-a-thons, constant crafting, and fetch quests. The story is good, putting abusers in their place, but I wish there was less crafting or that the crafting was simplified. It's just exhausting backtracking and crafting 15 items for the one item you need to forward the current quest.
Great game with beautiful art. Great cozy vibes. My only dislike was some of the running back and forth to get ingredients, making it tedious. Still, great game and I recommend!
beautiful game,, tho it can be repetitive and the amount of backtracking gets old
It's a cute little indie crafting game.
Very pretty visuals. The gameplay isn't very innovative though, and the story is very simple.
It's a nice game to get when on sale and if you have a weekend to spare.
To me, this is the perfect definition of a 'Casual Game'. There are interesting and funny story lines driving the quests. It doesn't make you pass skill checks or some timing based battles against bosses. It's a great game to relax to and unwind with, while still providing interesting and eventful game play.
Mmmmm pretty and good. Feels like you're running through a pop up story book :3
Such beautiful stories intertwined with incredible character designs and art styles. By far my favourite crafting game - there is a lot of backtracking through previous levels/areas to get materials for new recipes which I found annoying purely because I'm impatient but I eventually was able to predict what materials and spells to stock up on to make future quests easier.
It's such a gorgeous game with a bittersweet ending, I highly recommend it!!!
Lovely game. Beautiful graphics, in a stylized way. Cozy feel to it, with lots of small stories that have familiar hints from fairy tales. There's just enough puzzling to it that it is not too easy, but also not difficult enough to really have to strain the logical parts of your brain.
You do need to like gathering though. The game relies on you gathering materials for every step of the story you go through, and will use materials from an ever growing number of areas to complete things. That said though, if you just gather things you come across while moving through areas and through the story, instead of rushing from point A to point B, it's really not all that grindy.
My only regret is that the game is only some 15 hours long, and that there's no real immediate replayability. It's a gaming version of a Disney animated movie, as a grown up you probably don't watch it again immediately, but it is fun to re-watch at some point in the future. And I know I will pick up this game for a play through again at some point!
so beautifully crafted, a game of love :`) I`m geniunely sad that it`s over. loved every pixel and every word. wonderful.
I managed to complete this game in about half a day and I really enjoyed it. The artwork was beautiful and the story was interesting enough to make the constant back and forth of collecting ingredients not as annoying as it could be. Collecting everything you possibly can as you come across it is very helpful when it comes to lessening the back and forth. There were a few times I got stuck because I forgot to inspect things with my witches eye, but otherwise it was a fun game to play. My only issue, if you can call it that, is that there's not a ton of replay value to me since the story is very straightforward and would always be the same but I definitely think the cost to hours played was worth it.
It's really repetitive and annoyingly so. The story is fun in a way, but it gets overshadowed by going back and forward to get items. The whole game is entirely a fetch quest over and over again. I personally didn't like the ending. i asked myself "what was this all for?" when I reached the end. At first I thought that the ending was a bit clever, but it's not really. It wasn't this big bang where everything came together in a satisfying way, just a luke warm way.
Beautiful graphics and interesting storyline. Not everyone likes fetching ingredients to craft necessary items but I do, so that was a mechanic I enjoyed. Not a long game, you could play it over a weekend.
It was a nice and fairly short game. Almost completely story driven with almost no grind.
Be aware, this is a fetchquest game. Running errands and crafting items to hex and kill twisted creatures is the meat and potatoes of this game, and man does it scratch the little itch in my brain that makes me run around in other games and looting and doing all the sidequests. Lovely art, great game!
A really nice crafty game. I love side quest so this game was really good to me. I think maybe some would felt it's a little repetitive, at least in the finale phase, but I found it pretty nice over all.
Great art style, relaxing gameplay, and cozy atmosphere.
Game is beautiful with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It has certainly well-written in-game characters and quests.
I would consider it very easy item crafting experience - perfect for those who enjoy gathering ingredients.
Item hoarders will especially love it, as even items from the starting areas remain useful for the final soul-seeking mission.
For some players, the gameplay loop might feel a bit repetitive, but for others, the focus on crafting and exploration will be enjoyable. All achievements are story-driven, not misable, which makes 100% completion straightforward. It took me about 15 hours to fully complete the game, including reading all the dialogues.
I picked it up during a big sale (about 75% off) & it was absolutely worth it!
It's cute. It's got a cute story line about an old wytch that owes something to a purple goat.
Highly recommend if you like good stories that forge for stuff to make potions and crafts to finish quests.
Beautiful artwork, soundtrack, and storyline. It is very grindy for those who love that! Despite the linear storyline, I would absolutely play this again.
I had fun with this game for the first 1-2 hours. The graphics are nice, the sound pleasant, and the narrative interesting. Seemed like a perfect cozy, relaxing game. Unfortunately, it is very repetitive and quickly became chore-like, tedious, and boring for me, so I gave up halfway through.
I loved the characters, the art and the music of this game. The small details, like the sound effects, really help bring this game to life. I played it on the Steam Deck and the game looks and plays amazing.
I echo what others have mentioned, having to pick up items repeatedly in different areas to craft things can become a frustrating loop, especially when you get to the final set of spirits. I recommend picking up things as you go and working on quests in parallel to avoid having to go back to areas over and over again (it's still bound to happen though). Definitely don't do what I did, playing several hours at a time; smaller play sessions help the game feel less repetitive.
The end was totally worth it!
beautiful artwork, great ambiance. I found it quite cozy as well, there isn't a time pressure, you can go out and about in the world. I guess some can find the running around a bit tedious, I didn't mind it.
