Puzzle games are by far my favorite genre, and this one? Is one of the best I have ever seen. Despite the somewhat short game-play (if you speed through it) it is very much worth its cost. You can instantly see a lot of effort went into this game, with its mechanics and visual design. I honestly wish I never finished this game because it was so fascinating and fun to play. I am eternally grateful to all the people who made this game possible, it provided me with a VERY pleasant evening <3, hopefully the game devs don't ever stop doing such a wonderful job, since clearly they all have inexplicable talents.
A short but very interesting game. It reminds me of monument valley, only more complex. The puzzles range from easy to challenging, which keeps you entertained. The game is cohesive, and everything is put together really well.
very beautiful artwork and very creative gameplay
Beautiful, thought provoking, and unique puzzle game! Really enjoyed connecting shapes/concepts/stories.
Cons - maybe too short, could have a bit more variety.
This is one of my favorite games. It is visually stunning, and the immersive music and sound effects really help you feel like you're inside the game's world. For me the length of play-time and puzzle difficulty level was exactly right. I have not yet set any records for shortest time to solve the game, in part because I enjoy exploring all the visuals along the way. I don't want to spoil things for anyone, so in the vaguest possible terms: it is a puzzle game, but it is also telling a story. We follow our character through the various happenings and places, and I find the story aspect interesting as well. The story feels like an award-winning fantasy novel told only in evocative images without words.
If money is an object (isn't it always?), you can see if it goes on sale, but I would pay $15 again to own this game knowing now how much I enjoy it, and to support the creators for making something so perfect.
In case it matters to anyone, I played on a Mac, no issues using it for this game.
A beautiful hour of gameplay. Very short, very sweet. Would highly recommend grabbing on a sale. Left a real impression.
I never saw a "fractal" (not really) puzzle game like this. Dreamy, beautiful art, with a nebular narrative style that allows your own interpretations.
I want more of this, i would love to play a part 2.
really liked this game! makes you sit in awe about how perfectly out of box the solutions are. good concept and ambient background music. worth it if youre looking for something quick and stimulating in one evening.
Beautiful art, interesting mechanics. The only complaint to short. I would play another game like this in a heartbeat. It was as enjoyable as it was fun to navigate the world and watch the story unfold. Hope they make more like it. Recommend if you're looking for a relaxing time using your brain to solve things.
unique, beautiful and magical game. it's short but I finished it in 100, but kept coming back for more of it's magic!
Even though much shorter than a lot of other games I have played recently it was a genuinely refreshing and nice experience. Its beautiful, creative and tries new things with every chapter. Honestly, I am really happy with this game, worth its money.
What to consider when approaching this game for another opinion
Personally, I did not enjoy the game. However, briefly watch the gameplay to determine if you enjoy these genres of games. Also, please only purchase the game on discount.
Why I dislike the game
The game length is also quite short. I played while very sleep deprived and finished sub 100 minutes. If you are aiming for a long game consider another one. I have played many puzzle games. The puzzles throughout the game were quite easy. The only puzzles I found a bit interesting were from chapters 4 and 5. However, they didn't boast a huge difficulty. Mostly just finding out whichever parts fit. Despite the lack of puzzle difficulty. Let's explore the other factors that this game provides. Story and artistic values always elevate games. Unfortunately, Gorogoa does not really have a plot. If there is plot, it's portrayed in a way that is not easy to understand at all. Thinking back on my clear, I can not understand the plot whatsoever. The most that I can conclude is a boy wants to capture the wonder of colours; however, the plot does not make me fond of the continuation of the story or the characters themselves. While clearing, you don't really think of these aspects either. It's mostly just a game of yeah, this exists so it should be. Moving onto art, it was not very pleasing. When some scenes connected into a video it was satisfying a bit. Unlike the game Gris, I was never inspired to stop and enjoy the art in Gorogoa. There never was a big point where I thought it was very beautiful. The dragon simply felt kaleidoscopic without anything else really. (Note: I am talking about the dragon because it can be seen in the trailer of the game, thus I will not put a spoiler tag around this). When I play games with the genre of Gorogoa and Gris. I view them more for their visuals and story richness because of the lack of mechanics. The lack of mechanics is not bad because it allows for a larger focus on these aspects. I enjoy playing these games as interactive art pieces. Unfortunately, the art did not really stand out to me. As stated above, consider watching someone else play to determine that the game suits you. I hope this review has helped you! Have a nice day.
The games ambiguity
Many players enjoy the game and artwork. Which is why I strongly advise briefly watching someone play the game before taking my opinion to heart. The games uses geometry colourfully to create puzzles (Eurogamer). The simple touches of the game alters it's reality, while the puzzle is logical to solve (Gamespot). Most importantly, I agree: "the games absorbing fleeting story is ambiguous(IGN). After reading the other reviews. I can whole heartily say: the game will vary based on how you think and perceive the game. In addition, one thing Gorogoa does beautifully is the world building. The world is very complex, but lacking in the aspects stated above. I hope this review has helped you! Have a nice day.
I want more!!! This game is amazing. the art, the genius of the puzzles... highly recomended
This is a beautiful game. The illustrations, the flow, the creativity of the way images are related in the puzzle. I didn't expect this but I also found it helpful in processing some of my own pain and sadness around ongoing war and the experience of ordinary people stuck in those situations
Highly recommend for puzzle lovers. Challenging enough but not overwhelming, and utterly, utterly beautiful.
You can finish this game in 20 minutes, if you know what to do. (If you don't, it takes about 5 hours.) But why would you do that, when the art and story is worth so much more?
This game is beautiful. Its central mechanic is so, so incredibly creative. The puzzles, all built around this, really get you thinking about things in new ways. Solving them isn't all that difficult once you understand the environments, but makes you feel clever. Everything is about that moment of insight, when you find a new connection you hadn't considered before.
Everything is hand-drawn, and it's clear an incredible amount of care was put into all of it. There's an in-game language which I bet is transliterable, and I'll probably sit down sometime to look into it-- but so much of the world and the storytelling is visual that it probably doesn't even matter much. The world feels like it has so much history and mythology that you can just barely glimpse. The story is nonlinearly told, which is appropriate in a game like this. My interpretation (debatably a spoiler; it doesn't reveal any puzzles, and it's only an opinion anyway): [spoiler] The game is about reinterpreting your memories, and at the same time it's about acknowledging your previous interpretations. What it means to you now, together with what it meant to you then. [\spoiler]
The way time, memory, and the dragon work in this game is altogether fascinating. I'd really love to do a deeper analysis sometime.
If you want a quick puzzle game, this is good. If you want a complex art piece begging for analysis, this is really, really good.
Amazing atmospheric puzzle game. Sadly very short.
A beautiful game that covers a parallel story of how someone's past and future weave together to make a complete story. An answer you easily found might fail you, but keep trying and eventually your experience and effort will yield the truth.
Beautiful and creative little experience! Very neat puzzle designs and the whole flow of the game feels wonderful.
really enjoyed this short but very creative game. highly recommended.
Beautiful indie game with great sound design. Playing the game feels like having a really nice dream. The mechanics are super interesting and I hope there will be more games like this in the future from Buried Signal! :) 10/10
Beautiful game with one of the most thought trough puzzle systems I have ever seen. Amazing - will recommend to all of my friends.
Delightful, creative, and beautiful puzzles. Love it
Nothing quite like it. Clever, mind-bending and charming all at once. A sheer delight.
Engaging, albeit short-lived. Wonderful puzzle walkthrough. No regrets. Got it on discount. Worth the time. Can be just a little bit challenging but not enough to be completely stuck. Great for an older game. There aren't that many levels.
Beautiful artwork, great visual storytelling, and a lot of fun puzzles. Some solutions are figured out through small visual details, so don't be afraid to just take in the scene.
This was the most visually stunning, well-thought out, magical game I've ever played. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for both an engaging game that has a good blend of ease and challenge, and who wants to be amazed by the designers who made it. 10/10.
The game is so amazing, love the puzzle and the story, to bad its so short thooo
A beautiful game, but not for me. You might like it?
It's rarely clear how many (admittedly good-looking) tiles you have access to at any point. I finished the game by brute forcing my way through most of the puzzles. Most people didn't seem to mind this, but I prefer for puzzles to have clear goals, parts, and predictable consequences to actions.
+ Gorgeous artwork and smooth animations
+ Wonderful sound design
+ Cool transitions and layering effects when moving tiles around
~ Anti-war themed story; good but ambiguous enough to not offend
~ Game must be played with mouse, no keyboard/controller support
~ Sound design is minimalist and music is soft, fits the slower pace of puzzles well
- Tiles will have items within them you can zoom in on. It's rarely clear what you can zoom in on, making it unintuitive to figure out what options you really have to solve each puzzle. Maybe they could add a feature to make it clear if you can zoom in on something?
- It's rarely obvious what you need to do in order to progress to the next puzzle. You need to arrange for certain events to happen, but without prior knowledge you might just brute force solutions like me.
Award me the fool if you want; I know many people love this game, and that love is deserved - Gorogoa is gorgeous and a meditative experience. It just wasn't for me.
Wonderful game and an inspiring testament to the endless potential of games for innovative storytelling.
Absolutely incredible game, super creative puzzles that consistently surprised me in really fun ways. It's pretty short so I'd recommend getting it on sale, but it is a must-play for puzzle game fans and is an unforgettable experience.
It's been a long time since I’ve played a game with such a strong opening. Right from the start, the player isn't overwhelmed by tutorials or hints—just four squares on the screen, and from there, the mystery begins to unfold.
Despite the complexity of its puzzles, the sheer simplicity of the gameplay ensures that the player never feels overwhelmed. Instead, each challenge feels intuitive, drawing you deeper into its intricately woven narrative—one told in such a unique way that it keeps you motivated until the very end.
I just finished Gorogoa, and it was such a beautiful experience. The hand-drawn art is stunning, and the puzzles are incredibly clever and unique. It really made me think in a different way, but it always felt intuitive and rewarding. It’s not a long game, but every moment is crafted with so much care that it feels really special. For me, it was absolutely worth it—such a great example of how games can be both art and engaging puzzles at the same time.
A fantastic puzzle of contexts, shapes, and intertwined stories. Solid mind-bending entertainment I can only wish for more of.
I've beat this both on EGS and Steam now. I really enjoy the overall atmosphere of the game. It does a great job of delivering a vibe and story without any words being used at all (spoken OR read). It's a feat much easier said than done, and this does it better than any other title that comes to mind I've played. The puzzles aren't overly complicated but are done well enough that they aren't always mind numbingly simple either. It has great balance all the way through. Personally I feel the purchase price is justified and wouldn't be dissapointed to pay it.
visually interesting. fascinating game mechanic. doesn't explain anything, which I love. 10/10 has public transit.
Gorogoa definitely changed the way for a puzzle game. It's immersive and a challenge to the players to explore and overcome the game's environment limited by four square/pics. And the story line is vague and might not be understandable for the majority but it was an adventure and the foreshadowing of the ending left me speechless. Although the game can be finished by an hour it contains a lot to unpack and an enjoyable process when finishing a chapter. Overall this was worth the purchase!
Best puzzle game I've played in a while.
Truly stunning art style, always left me challenged but rewards clicking around and trying stuff out - I never felt overly frustrated by any of the chapters.
I didn't read too much into the story but I could organically feel emotions and thoughts when playing through each chapter and can tell a lot of meaning can be taken from the game if the player wants.
It felt natural to find the answers and solutions and overall the 2x2 grid is an incredible, unique and effective mechanic.
Definitely a hidden gem!
The art direction? Beautiful.
The rest of the game? Not so great.
Quite lacking for a puzzle game. The gameplay is just sliding pieces around or backtracking until something works. Levels felt either too easy or too tedious. It also immediately throws you into level one with no tutorial, it just assumes you'll know what you're doing.
There's an overarching story to it, but it's so cryptic and drawn out that it makes it hard to follow.
Feels very pretentious for a game that's pretty underwhelming.
If you do decide to give it a shot, grab it when it's on sale. It's very short for a $15 game.
what a good game! I played with my girlfriend and we enjoyed it a lot. We didn-t understand the story, does anyone know what it means? Thanks guys, good night.
This is a beautiful little puzzle game all about continuity and detail. This game exemplifies that satisfying feeling when things click together through its complex puzzles that arise through its seemingly simplistic and intuitive mechanics. This game needs no words, literally, and the level of effort that went into it shows for itself. I only wish it were longer, but everything here is still well worth playing.
Gorogoa is a lovely puzzle game with plenty of "wow's" and "whoa's." The way the story panels connect and flow will make you wonder how it was possible to hand draw this. Fun to play, didn't want it to end. When I completed it, I went back for more. Highly recommend!
I got this game on a discount, but I regret I did. The game isn't expensive anyway, and it's worth every penny.
It's an incredibly refreshing and creative take on the puzzle genre. Without a single word, but with great attention to visual detail, we glimpse a story of great beauty and tragedy set within a strange, yet familiar world. The complete experience is nothing short of ephemeral.
From the gameplay perspective, the puzzles employ some innovative and unique mechanics while still operating within extremely reasonable logical framework. It's not a difficult game, and it doesn't take long to complete. If you have only a few hours, and are in the mood for some cozy puzzle time, this one is definitely for you.
The game is good for a puzzle game. It has one or 2 moon logic but is overall very easy. The game story wise let the player come to his own conclusion on what happens. This game is refreshing in a way. It's very short so the gimmick of the game does not wear on a player. Overall a great buy during a sale. Solid 10/10
Very creative and the music was great. A little melancholy but definitely adds character to this work of art. I think what drives me to play these games is to discover who the creator is by the story they tell or the imagery they choose to display. A great game to play after a busy day, very soothing.
Really enjoyable calm puzzle game that challenges your mind with ever more intricate and deep puzzles. Took about an hour and a half to beat and was fun all the way through!
Very short but incredibly unique with very nice artwork.
A fairly short game but a very clever puzzle. It also have a deep story although it is a bit abstract. Super recommended for puzzle lovers, and a must buy.
The art is pretty and the puzzles are clever. Gives off rusty lake vibes where the puzzles are abstract and there's a story line.
An incredibly unique puzzle game unlike anything I've played before. It's a shame it's so short, though I bet it took ages to develop.
