Age of Grit is an immersive steam punk simulator. It includes unique storyline in Wild West setting. I enjoyed missions, mini quests, battles and cities. Thank you to developers and looking forward to more games from the vendor!
I got this game on sale and I'm having lots of fun with it I would call it a simple laidback kind of game.
You fly around in your skyship fighting other skyships and earning money by doing different jobs for people or trading with towns.
To keep moving around the map you will have to spend money to buy cool upgrades for your ship Because some enemies are very powerful.
There are some bugs in the game that might make you restart at the last town you were at but if you can buy this game at half off or more then do it.
An enjoyable weird west-steampunk rpg, a lot of text but it is well written and story interesting but not one for those who don't like reading. Combat is a bit simple but enjoyable with lots of upgrades to fit to your ship. Nice art style and music is good.
A really interesting concept and solid game that is held back from being a real indie gem by a few glaring problems:
- The dialogue really needs editing. There are spelling and grammar issues all over the place, which really breaks the immersion
- The game plays really slow due to some quality of life issues. There is no ability to expand your ships range or speed up the world map, so you end up spending a lot of time watching your ship crawl around the map. This makes the mid-game in particular somewhat tedious as there really aren't 20 hours of content there
- The near end-game is very thin and could use some fleshing out. There are a lot of missed opportunities to flesh it out without much effort that would have added a lot to the game
That all said, the art is excellent, the overall gameplay and upgrade system is fun, and its definitely worth a look on sale if steampunk, old west, or CRPGs are your thing.
P.S. The preview video has virtually nothing to do with the gameplay, so don't go by that.
I LOVED this game.
Now don't get me wrong, it isn't for everyone. It's nothing ground-breaking, fairly basic mechanics. More-or-less a fairly flexible point-and-click adventure with modified card-battler combat. No fancy animation or twitch battles here. Fairly linear plot with a pretty good story.
However, if you want to play a steampunk flying-ship pilot, do missions, trade and survive, this might be the game for you, too!
-Kle.
Cons:
Extremely slow travel, as well as 2 second delays where they aren't needed.
Fonts and conversation text location makes reading a lot harder than it should be.
Quite cheesy conversations and interactions at times.
Inability to compare equipped items to those in shops.
Some bugs with buying/selling.
Low ship range turns map into a railroad where you have to stop at nearly every "station".
Still a really enjoyable, chilled, story-driven RPG despite the cons.
Works smoothly on Linux(Pop).
As others have said, it feels like an ode to the Firefly series.
6.5/10 Worth it on sale.
TLDR at the bottom.
I wanted to like this game, but after completing the game I can honestly say that I would not recommend it to anyone. I love Steampunk and I've played many text based games over the years. (Check out Choice Of games if you enjoy Text Based games)
This is a mostly text based game that is supposed to be rich in story and lore. Unfortunately the lore is lackluster and the characters are simple archetypes. The story feels pieced together, full of plot holes and things that don't really make much sense. The dialog seems alright at first, but by the end of them game you'll have seen the empty dialog dozens of times. Not to mention the fact that there appears to be no proofreader for the project.... Or even one person to look over the text and double check it. I would wager there are hundreds of typos in this mostly text based game.
The UI is clunky, slow, and unresponsive. It looks really fancy and nice, but overall it just doesn't function very well.
The game design as a whole leaves much to be desired. The combat is pretty basic, what you would generally see in this kind of text game. It involves an energy system and either boosting the output of your engine or communications system, or firing weapons at the enemy. I would say there is nothing spectacular about it but it works just fine as a break between long dialog and slowly flying around the map. You'll find that by about half way through the game, most of your time will just be spent flying back and forth across the map very slowly, all the while being accosted by random enemies that are kind of like cockroaches. The side stories are mostly just transporting something from one place to another in an attempt to earn more money to buy better equipment. But once you've found the build you like, you will probably end up with tons of extra cash with nothing to spent it on, thereby making side quests irrelevant.
Another reason I wouldn't recommend this game is that there are pretty much no options. You can adjust the music and sound effects but that is all. The UI can often be hard to read and the text is frequently in cursive which may be hard for many people to read. People colour vision deficiency will probably have a hard time reading the text.
TLDR:
No accessibility options, lackluster writing, clunky UI, and awful game design.
I purchased the game for 50% off (~9$ CDN) but probably I wouldn't recommend playing it even if it was free.
10hrs in one day and still have and just finished the first part. The game keeps you interested for sure in the story line. Does have some open world world to it, rogue like style play,
This was a pleasant surprise...well-built world, a story with both humour and dramatic revelations and an uncomplicated but tense battle system. Sure it has a few flaws, but so do many games at twice or three times the price. Will be looking out for the devs' next game.
Not for everyone, but the Far-West/Steampunk mix with a great story made it a very enjoyable playthrough for me.
2.7/5 Problematic, stupidly-hamstrung adventure, with randomish turn based combat. Cute-ish graphics. Not awesome, but not terrible. But the mechanics of the UI seem designed to annoy and slow down anyone who has ever played a game like this before.
The UI is distracting. All of the story text scrolls from the bottom upwards yet your responses pop down from the top (slowly). The story "options" are a series of tedious on-rails responses at the top of the UI, constantly jiggling around. It is very annoying, but the biggest problem is just how designed-to-be slow it is. We wondered if they designed the UI to be slow to make the game seem longer.
If you're looking for a steam-punk genre, olde weste game with occasional combat that seems to be tuned so you can't play it very quickly, this is definitely for you.
Overall, I have to give it a thumbs up because there are a bunch of amusing elements, but the problems designed into this thing are pretty awful. Nothing about production values or costs. The people who made this game want you to wait for 2 seconds between each of four clicks to visit a vendor and you can't view your inventory or compare your items without exiting the vendor. So slow.
I can not believe this game took 10 years to make, if you like to read for 80% of the game and click for the other 20% this is a game for you!. I don't recommend even at $10. I only made it 30 minutes and was completely bored with this game.
This is a very enjoyable game where you can take your time when playing it. There are missions you need to do, you also need to upgrade your ship, when travelling you will need to defend yourself against other ships attacks and you will need to interact with many NPC to make progressions in the story. To enjoy this game, you have to keep in mind that this is not an action game but rather an adventure game with a big focus on the story (many dialogues that make it an immersive game if you read them all). There are a lot of things to do in the game (and a big map) and you can do them without being stressed, so buy this game if you want to be able to relax while playing a game, want to explore a big worldmap and its towns and make good progression.
OK, being a one-man show has it's perks and it's quirks!
Perk and quirk 1:
This game throws you headfirst into the shoes of Jeb Rockwell, exmilitary, deserter and traitor turned smuggler, bountyhunter and trader on his very own transport airship. Before you even have had time to remove the shoes you were thrown into from your head, you find an enemy navalfleet in a place it shouldn't be! Time suddenly seems to have caught up with Jeb as he now has to struggle to solve this mystery while his own past unravels and comes to haunt him.
Perk and quirk 2:
You're stuck in what is basically a freighter! You can add armor/hulls but its main function is still the same. A transport, against warships and sky-pirates, bounty hunters and strange unknown automatons.
But a lot can be improved, your steamengine is used to power your weapons, sensors and much else. A direct hit on your engine can prove fatal, as can using it too much as it is liable to overheat and blow up! Weapons include cannons, machineguns, flamethrowers, long sniperlike rifles and whatnots, all with their own advantages. Sensors can be focused on accuracy, piercing armor, dodging etc, all can be powered just so far before they fizzle and become useless. Improve your wings to generally improve your odds!
Perk and quirk 3:
Trade, bountyhunt, run errands or solve mysteries! Quests can see you hauling ancient technology one day and a kids favourite chicken the next! A steady stream of wierd and wonderful requests will keep you busy, at least at first. Later on quests will force you to return to the country you betrayed, sneak into enemy territory and even explore a land filled with the ghosts of the past.
Perk and quirk 4:
The Wild Wild West, meets steampunk, meets Pirates of the Caribbean and a LOT of airships. Mechanic arms, huge cannons, flying fortresses and cities covered in smoke from coal and smog, all add up to a world that feel very thought through, and feel logical (well, as far as steampunk feels logical).
Perk and quirk 5:
The one man show (?).
As a captain you need stand alone while still be caring about your crewmates. A bit like the developer of the game. It has some spelling errors here and there in dialogues, and a few bugs, but the overall experience is that it is a stable game with a dedicated developer behind it, who is fully into improving it as well as open about suggestions/fixing anything that seem off/buggy.
As a whole, if you're into westerns you might want to try it, if you like airships you might to as well, if you want to experience some steampunk look no further and if you have a lively imagination you might become obsessed with Age of Grit.
Fun story driven game and very active developer.
As of 1.0 all major bugs I ran into on my play through have been addressed and the game can be played all the way through.
Really nice looking game and well worth the price :)
It's buggy and frustrating. There's potential here, but it needs an overhaul.
Refunded this game.
The game is not really in a playable position at the moment.
Spent 40 min trying to get to a town only to be shot down every time.
If you don't play it on ultra graphics the frame rate is horrible.
Way to much dialog to go through and you cant skip it.
the game is still broken, no new fixes, and still lots and lots, and i meat lots and lots of bugs.
Here is a couple the breaks the game;
-Cant open the vendor store sometimes without restarting the game, which caused by somekind of trading bugs, where you cant sell to certain stores that buy the products the need for higher than purchase price of it somewhere else. This makes it really hard to make money in the game, and if you have very few ways to make money in a game it becomes 'game breaking'
-Battles are bugged, especially scenario battles. In normal battles, your ship stops completely sometimes, and you can move only 3 clicks, b4 you have to repeatedly click the range and then engage button when world map traveling. And when you encounter the story battles, and you destroy the ship your battling, and it still has 1 hp left while its on fire of debuffed when you destroy it, the ship is destroyed but the 1 hp remaining still shows, which leaves you stuck in the battle... another 'game breaking' bug.
Im sure there are a ton more that i havent encountered, but those are the ones that i encountered in the first 2 hours of the game, and have restarted, deleted and redownloaded the game 8 times now b4 i got fed up with the bugs.
This game has good premise, and has great game play ideas, and would probably keep it in my library, but looking at the slow update, it may take a while for the game to finish, so ill just not recommend it until many of those game breaking bugs are fixed.
Great price on sale! I'd say game is good at full price for what you get as well
I really appreciate the fact that it has many options for resolutions and lower graphic settings. Was able to play this game on a very old computer with basically no graphics card and it ran just fine.
As far as game play goes I had fun trading goods in the game to make money.
I will say some dialog was long winded, especially during the main quest I encountered. Might be nice to shorten it some.
The beginning of the game was pretty difficult to figure out what to do. I eventually did after exploring different options using trial and error, pressing various buttons. Once I figured out what to do, it was pretty easy to continue along in the game.
Weapons during combat could use more explanation as to what to press. I struggled to figure out how steam points work and how to apply them to the weapons system. I eventually did figure it out though but it's challenging in the early stages of the game.
Couldn't what place in time this game is. Is it on Earth? Or some other planet in the universe. I'm not sure. Has a strong steampunk Western feel to it but still can't figure out the time period it's supposed to represent.
I really like the crew members you have on your ship but would really love to know more about their backstory. Am sure if I keep playing more, I might find out more information. However, it would just be nice to have it right off the bat so I can build a connection with them.
This game reminds me a lot of the old CRPG's I've played like Wasteland 1 &2 and Fallout 1 & 2. Dev's are moving in the right direction and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. So far it's pretty good.
The artwork is amazing for a 2D game. It's super immersive with all the dials, gauges and levers. It's quite different from other games similar and I love it.
Overall it's a great game and I am enjoying my time with it.
It's on sale right now and is a good time to buy but honestly, the price of $20 isn't all that bad for what you get here. I see that they update the game constantly. In fact I reported a couple bugs I found on Thanksgiving eve and they fixed them that very night, patching the game the next morning which I really appreciate and goes to show how invested they are with this game. I wish the dev's good luck and am eager to see what the future brings for AOG.
Didn't enjoy this much unfortunately. A lot of long winded text to plod through. The combat is quite simple. The events aren't that interesting. The UI is unweidly and just didn't really engage me, asked for a refund.
I'm used to play western rpgs, but haven't played one for a while. I played Morrowind, diablo, Deus EX, fallout, etc.Age of grit is definitely different but not in a bad way.It has fictional steam punk wild west theme, flying steam ships, and mechanical limbs! It's a really interesting world to explore. The graphics is 2D but its gorgeous and the quality is superior given that the game is an indie early access game. The music theme is definitely well thought out and really adds to the atmosphere.I definitely like it and looking forward to play through it
