Clearly written by an American with next to no understanding of Scottish village life, this includes the shocking way they have shown the "accent" in text which doesn't match up with where the story is set
As others have said: good story, but destroyed by lousy writing. Luckily I got it on special! Its the sort of game you play when the only other thing you can do is bath the cat!
Great game. Both story and the investigation/deduction mechanic are very enjoyable. Will definetly play a couple more times at a later date to see the other endings. It's a shame there's no save feauture 'cause it will make playing the game again to get other achivos/endings a bit of a chore. However I know that's not the fault of the developers, merely a standart for this kind of games. Oh well. Still very much worth checking out.
A small seaside town in Scotland. A mysterious murder. A desperate man seeking justice.
With every page, the plot gets denser and denser and soon it seems that the madmen may be the most sane ones.
If you like horror/mystery novels, you can find this one entertaining. An atmospheric game inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's works.
Where to start? Lovecraftian horror story in the hills of Scotland? Two stories in fact. You start off as one character and then you end up a second character. It is very long, took more than five hours to do my first play-through. Kind of dark and both my characters went a little cray-cray. A few spelling and grammar mistakes but nothing to derail the story.
Only problem is that afterwards you feel kind of tired and don't plan to replay for a long time.
This is some creepy shit. I loved it.
Do yourself a favour and play through the prologue. Keep a brief note on each named person you come across. It starts slow, but ramps up faster and faster.
Quite honestly one of the best, if not, the best Choice of game I've ever played. Hosted or otherwise. You make two characters and control both at different intervals. You'll actually be gathering evidence and looking back at it a lot. Shit fucking HAPPENS. Like crazy shit. It plays with the program used to make these games to an amazing degree, fucking around with visuals depending on how low your sanity stat is. I'll never forget one particular scene where saw the weird ass baby thing the cult was raising that just fucking flashed on my screen before disappearing. In my opinion, it's a must play on it's technical merit alone, the great writing only further cements that opinion.
Couldn't get through this one. I found it to be a very slow game. The people you talk to won't say much or give mundane answers. Some of the locations you go to you find nothing. I just got bored with it, and decided to play something else.
Easily one of the most brilliant stories I've seen come from Choice of Games. The writing and general plot easily make you think of H.P Lovecraft. This story also has so many different ways that it can diverge. My only honest complaint is that the money you can earn really seemed to be nearly useless. Overall though, I would seriously have to give this a 10/10.
For the Lovers of H.P. Lovecrafts 's Books this text game will be a fitting choice to play. This story take place in Scotland in a little old fishing town and lapse between two time periods the middle of the 2000s and the 2016 following a private investigation: The man who hired you think there is more behind the murder of his sister and ask you to find the truth behind her death as the police already closed the case, The player could choose between 3 distinct background: A true Private Investigator (start with a Gun) , Criminal (more able in lockpicking some doors you will otherwise have to avoid) , Scholar (have more knowledge on occult subjects). Each role give some perks and I noticed will lock you on some route of investigation: You will visit more than one place and meet different people who you could talk to but there just so much you could do (after enough choices picked you will have to go back your hotel) and this will prevent you to get all the informations you need to understand what truly is going on. You could have a "Buddy" or informant you could call who is specialized in a different "class" than yours (I didn't really used much this help as is aviable only when you are at the hotel but I think will allow you to reach information otherwise unaviable in the role you picked). I have to give credits to the author as his writing is really good and make you really feel like you have a investigation going on (To the player is given a case folder where you could review the stats (Sanity of course is an important factor and will be determined by the facts you will uncover and how much paranoid you will act, in some cases in the story is good to be it ;-), you will have autopsy reports, diagram of the house, newspaper clips on the accident and plenty of ways to solve the case and there will be times where your "deductions" are called on by the game asking you for the right answers and the answer you gives will determine on how much credibility you have by the end (or even if you can survive, in the prologue you're given a easy time but later you will not know if you given the right answer until you die or go mad) also you will be given the choice to call the man who hired you and give him reports on your findings (Or you could keep what you uncover all for yourself). In the End aside the cover who made me refrain from playing it early this is really a good immersive dark-horror story and extremely enjoyable to play (If you are into lovecraft horror of course =). would rate it 10/10 as one of the best in the Hosted games library I played so far.
The story is really captivating and immersive from the start but not quite satisfying in the latter chapters. And in the end, I'm still at loss about what happened to a certain character in the prelude. But it is overally good and worth the price. I'm a Lovecraft fan myself, so it has been a really exciting experience to have a lovecraftian investigation adventure!
Really enjoyed this one! It's different from the other Choice-titles I've read, telling a much darker and more sinister story. The writing is good, atmosphere dark and foreboding with the general sense of Lovecraftian terror. Enjoyable read, but definitely a different type of experience.
One of the best CYOA games I have played. If you like Lovecraftian horror you'll love this, and it has insane value for the price tag.
pretty decent, mentioned keanu reeves.
did my best to re enact john wick in the most minimalistic of actions.
curious story, i liked it.
though i guess its more because of how a friend introduced me to lovecraftian fiction.
Can't really recommend this one. The typos are killing me and the grammar is absolutely atrocious at times. Considering the fact that this game is purely based on text, this is very annoying and very prominent.
I usually love these games but I didn't love this one. The story was exciting at times, I'll give the authors that much. It definitely has potential to be something great, but in its current state it is sadly not.
Pros:
Original story
Case solving
Class system
Cons:
Less than stellar writing
Typos and grammar mistakes galore
Class system never really affected the story
Sexual orientation means absolutely nothing considering no romance options really presented themselves
Story gets really boring in certain places
The game is a bit overprized considering the overall quality
Better luck next time, guys.
Very well-written choose-your-own adventure game! Creepy atmosphere, fully-fleshed out world that feels like every character you meet has their own unique personality and backstory. Some genuine shocks, unanticipated twists, and page-turning adventure.
My only criticism is that there are no save mechanism, so you have to play through from beginning to get different outcomes.
Well worth your time and money!
Pure Lovecraft and True Detective. A real joy, one of the best, if not the best, of Choice of Games.
This is a great game with a lot of details, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I would like.
the story is very interesting, and overall this game is great if you are looking to solve a mystery.
but one con that really drags this experience down is how easy it is for you die, you are keep playing with another new character in the next storyline but that's not an option for people like me.
it is acceptable if this actually have a save system, but to play the whole game again? it gets old really fast really quick, at the end of the day this game is too hard for me, with heavy emphasis on trail and error.
I've played many games like this but wow, this was deep and really impressive, have really enjoyed playing it and will restart again to see where else this great story can lead me, would recommend Highlands, Deep Water for anyone thati s a fan of these type of games as it is definately one of the best I've played.
Can't recommend it .
Pros :
-mostly interesting story
-lots of files on crimes
cons:
-the classes .I chose the criminal for an evil playthrough . With a stat for sanity that sounded like fun ! Beeing a criminal is supposed to make me a better fighter and better at intimidating than the others . Still intimidation basically always fails if the option doesn't say that you draw a gun on someone and that's just stupid . Anyone can intimidate people like THAT ! If you try intimidating people any other way it just ends the conversation . So playing as a bad guy is really boring and gets you nowhere .
-stats .Don't exist so you have no idea what you're good at or how good since the archetype discription doesn't seem to have any meaning during the game .
-fighting .As i said you have no stats so you can't see how tough you are . Again as an experienced criminal armed with a gun and knife i thought i could fight a guy with beer bottle . Nope ,died . I even got a trophy for figuring out he's in the next room ,drew my gun BEFORE entering and STILL he "surprise"-attacked and disarmed me when i entered ! Tried to fight using my hidden knife then and got killed with the bottle...yeah great...good thing i chose the charackter with the best fighting skills...
-cases .Lots of effort put into them but if you actually read everything and investigate it's barely possible to come to a wrong conclusion . Much too easy .
-safe games . There are none so if you rely on your charackter beeing able to fight anyone you have to start ALL OVER again wich is extremely boring in a game where you already know the solutions to all cases from your last playthrough so there's nothing to do differently except for not trying to threaten people .
-gets less and less interesting .
In conclusion : Good idea ,one cool twist early but extremely disappointing all the rest of the way .
