The truth is that game is not for everyone. It takes a lot from souls-like games, builds over it with faith system. The RPG system does not involve leveling, just couple perks that can be bought with 'souls' and gear. Combat is more forgiving than in souls titles (mainly because of instant dodge-roll and animation cancel, no damage block). Nontherless it is quite more difficult than ds3, with brutal and unforgiving enemies, bosses and levels.
It is also rewarding because of it's difficulty. Game can be really steep in the begining, but it gets better with every beaten boss (maybe with exception to Jezebel). It is also not very linear, can easily get lost in labyrinth of rooms.
I really suggest this game for every souls-like fan, that can invest a bit of a patience in starting levels.
No in-game volume control. Big no every time when simple game design is ignored.
"Losing your items when you die gives the game a unique taste. Change my mind."
Overall experience:
Game is turn out great than I think. a lot of thing to do and to unlock, include secret here and there to be discover.
Fan of metroidvania game with a bit of roguelite element should not miss this gem.
Good Part:
control are tight enough (Play with M+KB).
didn't experience any bug yet (30+ hr playtime).
try to solve secret kinda fun tbh.
a lot variety of items that useful along the journey.
Downside:
a bit hard to go for 100 % achievements due to some RNG element.
can't backtracking at all you have to start a new run only.
can't jump... nothing more to say here. :(
I play lots of games like this, but never with *these* default controls. This game does not let me change them in game so I will not be playing it.
refund / 10
Dark Devotion is an unconventional souls game that’s somewhat hamstrung by some questionable rogue-like mechanics. But it’s definitely well made and interesting enough to appeal to a certain style of souls player.
Some reviewers claim that this is a roguelike which is a genre a lot of people are sick of in the indie space. But this is not really true in that the levels are not procedurally generated. The game does have a roguelike structure in that you need to do more runs in order to unlock better abilities and better weapons.
The game starts out extremely punishing with your character being very weak as well. So you have to be patient to progress further to get more powerful.
The dreary atmosphere and the focus on traditional dungeoneering with traps and shadows is excellent.
Also if your like me and wants souls games to go back to more deliberate and strategic combat, this game will be for you bc it really is about patience and using the right windows to attack decisively.
Really like the style, concept and just how the gameplay - feels, heavy, grim and knightly. Kind of a mix between Souls, Salt&Sanctuary, Blasphemous, etc. Very much of my type. Great job.
I like soulslikes but don't like roguelikes.
The game is ok, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone like me.
I come to a point where I have a teleport right next to the boss, but I have no chances of beating him without a long run around to collect gear and power ups.
Trying a lot of hopeless fights or run around for 20 minutes to potentially still die in a boss fight - that is exactly why I don't like roguelikes.
And killing you on game exit (you can't save your current run progress) is just plain bad game design.
THIS GAME IS TUFF AS BALLZ!!!!! It's very souls like from the way you levels to stamina management.... Probably more brutal because it takes a hot minute to get a check point.. It's a weird take on a Roguevania/metroidvania type.. I'd compare it more to Vagante but with bigger sprites?!? Not bad for $5... Should be more tbh
Controls are kinda janky, and the fact you cant remap them really sucks. No audio settings is crazy.
A nice game, you just need to get into it
It had me wishing that I had better controls and the ability to jump. Unworthy pulled that off but then that game was a metroidvania unlike this one. This game had me wishing I was playing a metroidvania instead like the aforementioned or The Last Faith, Elderand etc. It's not a whole lot of fun without that additional element to the gameplay.
Also, go into the tags and put a flag next to the metroidvania one, as it is not accurate.
I didn't even think that the game can be worse than the hentai souls like game. Sad. You can try it out ,but only take on sales.
No jump, not a Metroidvania.
Also, seriously Game Devs?! you can't remap controls?!
I have only two complaints about this 2d Souls-Like game, and neither are about the game itself.
One: Saves don't stick around if you switch computers (say, if your desktop gets old and you need a new one). This can be a bit annoying, it makes it hard to get back into the game after an accidental absence.
Two: There are no controls to reduce the game's volume, in the game. For Windows, you need to open Settings and manually adjust the volume from the System>Sounds>Advanced Sound Options menu.
Other than that, the graphics drip with atmosphere, the sound design is glorious, and the tidbits of story you get along the way keep you interested in learning more. So you're damn right I recommend this game.
It's stupid difficult, yes, but after the first few failures, you start to get the feel of it, and you're more in control of your own wins and losses. And that, from what I know, is the point of the genre.
Nice environments, nice mood, but the gameplay itself is a bit loose and particular. Trying a bit too hard to be dark souls difficult, but doesn't really hit the mark enough. I don't dislike it, but I couldn't recommend it and don't really feel like it's going to reward a lot of time investment.
I know it's not a helpful or fair review but how can a Game be released without Audio Settings
Dark Devotion is a 2D action RPG that blends souls-like, roguelite, and metroidvania elements into a unique experience. The dark, atmospheric pixel art perfectly complements the game’s moody, oppressive world, drawing players into its foreboding depths.
Like the Dark Souls franchise, Dark Devotion foregoes a traditional narrative in favor of environmental storytelling. The lore is revealed through scattered pages, diaries, and subtle environmental details, leaving much to player interpretation and discovery.
Combat is straightforward. You have a basic attack, dodge roll, and stamina management, simple, yet effective. For health, the game borrows a heart-based system reminiscent of classic Zelda games, which keeps things familiar yet refreshing.
After completing the tutorial, you’re thrust into the dungeon without any starting gear. You must scavenge weapons, armor, and items as you progress. If you die you respawn back at the hub, stripped of all gear but retaining the experience points gained during your run. These can be spent on permanent traits, giving you a sense of progression even in failure. As you explore, you’ll also uncover blueprints for new equipment, allowing you to start each run with a better arsenal.
The dungeon itself is labyrinthine, full of secret passages, hidden doors, and routes that will take time to memorize. Once you go through a door or drop down, there’s no going back, which adds a layer of strategy to exploration. Mastering the layout is key to success, as certain areas can only be accessed through specific paths, and secret rooms are plentiful for those willing to search.
Enemy variety is another highlight, with each area offering its own unique challenges. Boss battles, in particular, are a standout, offering well-designed encounters that are both challenging and fair. The overall difficulty feels balanced, never overwhelming but always keeping you on your toes.
In conclusion, Dark Devotion is a game I highly recommend to fans of the Soulsborne genre or anyone looking for a challenging, atmospheric dungeon crawler. It captures the essence of what makes these types of games rewarding, while offering its own unique twists on the formula.
metroidvania + darksouls + roguelite. Can be tuff to navigate and remember the routes at times but I had a good time and would do it all over again. Very hard but never unfair.
