After a series of tragic events, our hero Xero and his best friends are thrown from their homes into the middle of a war between nations. A general on one side of the conflict obtains an incredible power and then goes rogue, threatening humanity's very existence. The future of the planet is in danger and the only way to save it may involve killing your best friend.
Forever Home is a retro RPG developed over 13 years that takes inspiration from SNES and PS1 classics. The battle system is influenced from Squaresoft style action turn-based systems such as Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger. It uses a skill learning system similar to Grandia II and the Final Fantasy VII Materia system. Forever Home includes item and weapon crafting, monster catching, a rank based Colosseum, and numerous side quests.
The 30+ hour character driven narrative contains a deeply emotional and adult-oriented story mixing tragedy and heartache with overcoming personal adversities and lighthearted humor. The theme focuses on the meaning of survival and finding a place you can call home. A powerful original soundtrack mixing classical instruments with alternative drums and guitar helps push the mood.
Key Features:
- 30+ hour main story
- 30+ hours of sidequests
- Weapon / Armor / Item crafting
- Turn-based combat with a modern take on action-time systems
- Challenging boss battles requiring well-thought-out strategies
- No missables, meaningful sidequests, and player-influenced design
- Retro style world map with ship and airship travel
- Powerful original soundtrack
Cons:
- You might cry a lot

I rarely do full review. But! BEST HIDDEN GEM ON STEAM!! THIS GAME IS EPIC!!! GREAT STORY, VERY EMOTIONAL, GREAT GAMEPLAY and great world building, it was like playing a great anime , I played on hard and finally found a hard game. I completed it full, unlocking every item. Its just that good of a game, like a drug . This is very underpriced game!!, and more people should known about its existence. I accidentally found this game. Other jrpg RPG Maker games dont even come close to the quality of this game and shear amount of content. What can I say but highly recommend the game!!. So much content, and every character has interesting backstory, world is fleshed out really good. I cant believe one guy made this game. Huge respect to the developer, it was obviously made with passion. As a jrpg game in memory of a gba, nintendo and early playstation era, (chrono cross, ff) this game scored 10/10 for me. Beautiful, epic game. I played on steam deck and it works great , only issue is that when you swap a and b buttons and next time you start the game they are reset back, but only on main screen until you load the game, in the game they are swapped correctly. Other then that if anyone sees my review, I recommend this game alot , one of the best hidden gems here on steam, and game is hard just the way it needs to be.
Great RPG. Ignore my playtime - I've run it overnight a couple of times. It is quite long though. It has some cool and original ideas, but also the classic no-nonsense type of gameplay that brought you here.
I'm playing this right after I beat the entire Final Fantasy Pixel Remake Collection and I have to say I'm actually pretty impressed. It's easily one of the most fun indie JRPG's I've ever played and, despite the humble RPG Maker visuals and game mechanics, it tells a pretty detailed and compelling story which addresses some surprisingly complex and mature themes, not shying away from heavy stuff, while staying true to the genre's more lighthearted conventions.
The vibe reminded me of classic games I've loved, such as the aforementioned old school FF games, but also of stuff like Lunar Silver Star Story and even some of the better modern indie retro games like Shadows of Adam.
The level of detail in the story and the character interactions quickly brought to mind the first Trails game, Trails in the Sky, since Xero and Enda are reminiscent of Estelle and Joshua Bright as much as they're reminiscent of Alex and Luna from Lunar Silver Star Story, while still remaining their own persons.
The fact that this game is currently on sale for less than a buck boggles my mind, as does the fact that it costs just a couple of bucks at full price. If you like JRPG's but you look down on indies and/or RPG Maker games, give this one a try and keep an open mind. If you still hate it because you are dead inside, you'd only be down two bucks at worst.
My only nitpicks, and I'm reaching here for something to criticize, are that a minority of the character portraits (like Sandra, Slash's wife, and especially Throg) kind of clash with the rest because they seem to be made in a slightly but noticeably different style; and I would've liked to be able to quicksave at any point, which is a common modern QoL feature. Having said that, the lack of that option is not really a problem since the game does allow you to save at inns, anywhere in the over-world, and also at checkpoints in dungeons, one of which is always located right before the boss.
Other than that, the game does a good job of implementing familiar and interesting game mechanics, such as purchasing new skills and spells, crafting gear and items, upgrading equipment, managing a party of several characters that come and go while the core duo remain available for most of the game, and so on. I'm sure I've played a fair amount of recent big name JRPG's that are nowhere near as good as this hidden gem I only found by random happenstance through word of mouth.
It's RPG Maker. It's got the usual RPG Maker graphics, music, janky staircases, etc.
But there's a surprisingly powerful story behind that, and even the gameplay feels fresh - the bosses have a lot of interesting gimmicks.
