Unfortunately, it 'lost' my save file again. After replaying the first portion twice now, a third time seems less appealing if this could happen later on.

Aggelos is a 16-bit metroidvania powerhouse of game that is heavily inspired by the oldest entries in its genre. It's unique design mixes nostalgic level design and gameplay with legitimately complex and unique combat. The game, while very flawed, is an easy recommend for people who want to be challenged.

Overall Rating: 7.6/10

Pros:
- Top tier, nostalgic audio and visual design
- Very unique combat flow that allows for creative use of the various moves provided to you
- Exceptionally, difficult bosses that feel very rewarding to beat
- Although heavily inspired by the progenitors of the genre, it successfully carves its own spot in the genre for hardcore metroidvania fans

Cons:
- Laughably lackluster story, there is not a single story beat that one needs to pay attention to or care about.
- Does not seem very prone to casual gameplay as dying is punished extremely harshly (losing XP and, in the case of boss fights, being sent back multiple loading screens away)
- Lack of customizable settings, no audio settings whatsoever
- Music, although technically very good, is poorly mixed and spikes often
- Various bugs, none game breaking, like any indie game

ADVICE:
I completed my first run of the game on 'Hard' mode. Although I have no regrets in doing so, I will say that this game is exceptionally hard and the final boss almost beat my resolve. If you are not looking for a stressful experience, I recommend staying on Easy.

Short - sweet - worth your time.

Aggelos is true to form for a metroidvania. It doesn't do anything particularly unique but, the high amount of polish and familiar tropes make it instantly enjoyable.

-Tight controls, great music, excellent level design makes backtracking a joy.

-The art style is easily digestible and clearly displays enemy indications.

-Story is mercifully sparse and doesn't waste time with lengthy dialogue.

-The real focus is clean movement and combat. Both mechanics are intuitive to pickup and
reward skillful players.

Power ups are satisfying, secrets feel good to find and. enemies are fun to kill. Everything you expect in a solid metroidvania is here... except a functional map.

A fun throwback Zelda-like/Metroidvania, with a lot of heart, that unfortunately gets held back by some agonizing difficulty spikes and gamepad woes.

The bosses and temples towards the end, call on you to either grind to build experience, or figure out some way to survive without tearing your hair out. Basically the balance feels off in this game. I'm at the last boss with the best armor and most of the heart containers and fighting him feels like a chore.

That, in and of itself, isn't SO much of an issue, but sometimes the controller feels like it's not responsive in the way it should be. I know that's a lame complaint, but honestly, it feels like I'm hitting the same inputs and getting different results (I'm adding an edit here, because I've now read a few negative reviews and apparently I'm not alone on this). The most aggravating moment is during a platforming challenge to get a scroll, where it calls on Celeste like platforming and pogoing. Again, not so much an issue, except the gamepad seem incredibly wonky for said pogoing--making it a near impossible challenge. I ended up not completing this, because in the end, this is all just a game, but it really underlined for me:

If you're going to have me going through hurdles, then get me mad at the challenge presented--not angry at the controller itself.

Hard for me to recommend, but if you're looking for a fun platforming adventure game, then I'd say give this a shot.

★★☆☆☆

I really enjoyed my initial few hours with Aggelos, it is a charming 16-bit 2D adventure game with old-school level and sound designs. I liked exploring the distinct environments and discovering new enemy types and solving the various puzzles. However, I feel that the combat and metroidvania aspects of this game are painfully outdated. I enjoyed the challenge of the first few bosses, but the levels and bosses towards the end are obnoxiously unfair or at best, unforgiving.

The map is practically useless, the fast-travel system is decent but still requires you to travel distances before getting to the boss room (this makes it really tedious for certain bosses), it's a nice respite to have a one-time revival and carry one potion, but I wish an upgrade to allow players to carry more health items would improve the experience for the more casual players.

I managed to complete 100%, and although it is immensely satisfying to finally beat a difficult boss and unlock all the achievements, the rage I felt while doing so is simply unacceptable. I'll admit that I might have the wrong motivation or insufficient skill to enjoy this game; I was really impressed by it's visuals and sound design, but the gameplay is not for the weak.

In conclusion, I'm disappointed with how Aggelos handled it's difficulty. Consider getting this game only if you're prepared to endure that.

This might be just a run of the mill skill issue, but the game gets has some annoying elements that you tolerate at first but eventually become overwhelming. I am seriously considering to ragequit at the third dungeon.

In no particular order:

  • There's no key rebinding.
  • Pausing and unpausing is strangely slow.
  • Even when equipped with the best possible equipment (most of which requires farming), there's plenty of tanky enemies, some with ridiculous damage outputs.
  • While enemies can drop hearts, the rate at which they do so is super low.
  • Enemies always respawn upon reentering a room.
  • Plenty of spots where damage knockback can screw you over.
  • Dungeons have no save spot inside of them, so while they're technically small, you can very easily find yourself having to redo a lot if you get cocky.
  • This third dungeon in particular has some rather annoying enemies, several of which are practically guaranteed damage.
  • There's technically a pogo mechanic, but it's super finnicky and thus not reliable. Chaining it with the uppercut is extra annoying.
  • [*] There's an optional (I assume) puzzle dungeon where some of the solutions are rather precise. If you exit the dungeon, all the progress resets.

This game reminds me a lot of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. The music is really reminiscent of it and gets stuck in my head all the time.

You can gain different sword techniques like downward stab and rising slash. It also made me think of Crystalis in the capacity that you gain different techniques with the acquisition of the four elements.

After 18 hours I got all achievements but I'm still tempted to play it again.

Nice and polished NES-type game. It's quite simplistic, but has its own charm. It gets more challenging (and little frustrating) after some time, yet nothing that can't be beaten with some practice.

Pros:
- feel of exploration
- upgrades / new weapons
- responsive controls
- game guides you a little towards next task
- secrets and rewards

Cons:
- castlevania style of jumping back when taken damage (easy to fall from a ledge and you will feel it)
- some bosses are massive and flood the screen with their attacks so you don't know how to approach them (little button mashing at the end)

Good retro platformer with metroidvania elements for its price.

If you are looking into something similar, but somehow better - look into Cathedral.

The main issue of the game is its poor support of controllers

the game pixel art its gorgeous, the retro music is really good, controls are responsive, the gameplay is good, the story is the classic path of the hero, i thought the game was easy, played the first mission, the forest, the cave, but then i stomp over the earth temple, that shit its hard because i couldnt find any save and had to fight the boss with all the damage received over the temple, daam :/ i had to rage quit, maybe in future ill come back to continue the heroes journey -___-

This is a very good pixel-art 2D platformer!
Be ready to butthurts, because this game is hard enough (as I like).
I can recommend it for people who like Celeste or Bzzzt.

Also, this game has some disadvantages (some of them may be fixed in the future):
- cannot mute sounds
Yes, you can't play and listen to something you like. Be ready listen to game music only. This music is beautiful, but the obvious option "mute" is unavailable. Pls, fix it.
- too tough bosses (at least on hard, as I play)
Sometimes they are very-very strong and have a lot of HP. But maybe you like boss-fights, who knows.
- to save the game you need to find one of the special places
You can't leave the game anytime and save your progress, and save points are pretty rare.

Anyway, Aggelos was done pretty well, one of the best new pixel-art games.

8/10, but can be improved with updates :)

This was a lot better than I expected from what I paid for, it really feels like an old SNES tittle along with the weird obscure ways to keep progressing (talk to the NPCs people).

This is a great metroidvania, the story is very simple but excellent, the traversal gets quite deep, there are a lot of secrets that are fun to find, and I liked the combat but the pogo move is REALLY awkward to use and while the magic spells were amazing for plataforming I never wrapped my head around using them in combat (they are extremely usefull for that).

Also a heads up, there are some very hard challenges (SCREW THAT FUCKING WOOD PECKER) and as an achievement whore I did a low level hard mode run to "optimise" time... never try that, go for 3 play throughs for all achievements believe me.

Great Retro Adventure Style Game

Aggelos is a wonderful 2D action adventure game that feels very much in tune with the older Wonder Boy games and excels in what it does. It's the simple tale of a hero going on a quest to save a kingdom and sometimes that is all you need for a good game.

Pros:

  • The pacing of the game is excellent. Never does the game get bogged down in terms of progression and the difficulty curve is very reasonable.
  • There are lots of powerups, upgrades, and equipment to get that keep the gameplay feeling interesting as you progress.
  • Exploring is rewarding as you will always find quest related items or things like health upgrades that will help you out.
  • The controls are simple and feel pretty good to use barring one issue which I will touch upon
  • The spritework is all around pretty good with some very nice character and enemy designs.

Cons:

  • The one big one is the seeming lack of d-pad/analog support for controllers. Given movement isn't too complex I don't think it hinders the gameplay a lot but it is still a big issue that the developer doesn't seem to have fixed. I personally used a keyboard for movement and controller for everything else and found it worked fine but to be able to just use a controller would have been nice.
  • [*]During the last 3rd of the game or so enemies really start hounding after you. It's manageable but a little annoying when it is nearly every screen.

I am giving this a thumbs up but it would be more 50/50 actually

positives
- tight controls
- interesting abilities

neutral
- music is nice but get's old a bit fast
- enemies damage on touch. I personally really don't like this but YMMV

negative
- The primary way of increasing difficulty between areas seems to be for the enemies to have a lot more health which becomes a grind fest really quick.
- some of the normal enemies make it near impossible to get past them without killing them or taking
damage. Combined with the first point this get's old fast.
- respawn at the beginning of dungeons after death. This wouldn't be a problem if there were shortcuts but often it means backtracking through enemies and difficult jumping passages and losing health in the process.

All in all a good game with a few flaws. Get it on discount if you want a nice Metroidvania snack.

The game has zero respect for your time. Long walks between save points and boss fights, losing experience on death, and a complete lack of any sort of useful map completely ruin the game. Some hitboxes feel really off. The down stab attack only chooses to work around half the time, causing tons of unfair damage.

If you are looking for a retro style metroidvania, consider Alwa's Awakening or Cathedral instead.

This game is actually good, sort of, but it has some massive issues that just make you hate it by the end. First off, controllers didn't work for me. The only thing I could do was use a community layout to remap my controller to kb/mouse, and that worked. However, once I got the element ability that stopped working and I had to swap layouts AGAIN to keep going. Basically, if you aren't willing to remap the controller you probably won't be getting a controller to actually work.

Second issue is really the fact that this game at some point just starts punishing you over and over to where you don't want to play anymore. Mostly, this happened for me at the fire area but it starts before that a little. When you die you lose exp, and there's basically no save point before bosses. This was annoying but sort of manageable for the first two dungeons I did. However... the fire dungeon it's almost like the creator just had this sadistic streak, like he was getting enjoyment out of seeing how miserable he could make the player. The controls don't work well and because you die you end up doing the same annoying puzzles(which require specific key presses at the exact time) over and over and over. That's mostly just terrible. Like actually getting to the fire temple boss is SO bad, the way the skill they give you is so badly implemented that it just makes you want to stop trying.

Idk, I did sort of enjoy probably 4-5 hours of this game and I paid like 99 cents, so I guess it was sort of worth it? I mostly don't want to recommend it because people need to realize what this game is and how exhausting it is after a few hours.

This is a game I will come back to every 5-10 years to satisfy that nostalgic itch of retro gaming of the days long past, where I was a young kid playing playing video games for the first time. That's a special feeling for me now as an grown up, and this game reproduces that sensation exceptionally well!

This game is a time capsule that embodies the essence of 2D action platforming of those days but without the frustrations of hardcore difficulty, lack of save, and poor quality of life. The pixel graphics, basic story, and chip tunes perfectly match the now retro games of those days.

You are the the silent protagonist on a hero quest to save the world from evil. Each area you explore such as the volcano area, sky area, underwater area, and etc... has an associated dungeon/temple where there's a final boss protecting an an elemental orb of power. Collect the orbs, get new cool abilities, and eventually unlock the final area where you fight the ultimate boss at the end. Simple enough, but executed PERFECTLY to capture what it really felt like to play the embodiment of these types of game for the very first time way back when. Every line of text within the game is short and simple and to the point to advance the game.

The game can be hard, but you can always brute force your way if you spend time leveling up to be more powerful or purchasing upgraded sword/armor to make progression easier. You can spend some time searching for extra health too. You can also hold a potion in your inventory to essentially have 2 lives. Additionally you also get an "oopsie" herb which will activate automatically when you lose all your health.

Basically, if I ever want to re-visit retro 2D action platforming gaming of days long past (duck tails, batman, wonderboy, Zelda, Ninja gadien etc..), I can just load this gem of a game to achieve the combined satisfaction of what I "remember" of playing those games. I say remember because if one replays those games, they are not really good anymore. This game shines by making one feel like they're playing those old school games and having a great time because there are no control frustrations, lack of save, or hardcore difficulties those retro games actually had. There are maybe 1-2 challenges that are a pain, but totally optional.

Nice and short too. I think 6 hours for me for 97% completion.
