Pembrey is a narrative, horror, mystery game set in the United Kingdom.
Two young film makers travel out deep into the Pembrey Forest in search for footage for their documentary. Record and document your findings and unravel the truth behind the famous "Pembrey Forest".
Navigate through the large forest and pray not to get lost along the way. Don't wander too far from camp however, you may see something you'll regret... The winding forest is easy to get lost in however. During the game, you will experience being lost in the middle of the woods. You will feel like you're going in circles, but are you really? That is the fear this game strives to achieve.
Record unique things in the environment to improve your film. Document horrific, beautiful, or interesting things. Will you have enough proof to convince everyone else of what actually lies in the woods?

RPG Maker strikes again!
Pembrey is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction.
As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development.
Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers.
Notably the developer here couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make an RPG... and that's the only thing RPG Maker can do properly... except it's not even very good for making RPGs. Instead, we have an incredibly lame "mystery" top down adventure game that plays out more like a visual novel than a real game. There's a mystery/horror theme that goes nowhere and really just makes RPG Maker somehow worse than it already was. It certainly makes all of gaming slightly worse just by existing.
Pembrey has the cash grab price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger.
A Glimpse into the Pixelated Horror Realm
If you're not the type of person who enjoys full-on horror games, then you will likely find Pembery enjoyable. While there isn't a lot of gameplay, the story more than makes up for it, along with the decent sound and visual effects that contribute to a good horror story/game experience.
It's definitely not for everyone, but a 2D pixel art game featuring a horror story like Pembery is not something you come across every day.
Additionally, I appreciate the correlation between Pembery and a specific movie released in 1999, which I also happened to enjoy.

I only picked up this game because I had a coupon and got it for less than a buck. Good thing because it certainly wasn't worth full price. The story was seriously disjointed and boring, and seemed like a badly made knockoff of Blair Witch Project, and a couple plot points are just thrown up in the air. Also there's very little to do in the game and the "Documented" parts really don't seem to add much or provide anything with the story. Also none of the decision-making parts have any impact on the game. Very boring, would not recommend.

Final (my score, my rules - these is not math, punk) - 4
It's OK (7/10)
It has signs that there were planed multiple story branches and endings while you can get probably just one but considering price which is in many cases further decreased by coupons even single regular story is ok.
Lets hope it will get finished one day
Only played for seven minutes and I already had to much of the game, even for .99 cents it was to much for me.
Has a lot of promise but falls flat. The game has you 'document' unique items/locations and tries to give you the impression that this matters, but it does not. Same with the interviews. You don't learn enough about any of the characters to care what happens to them. The most exciting part of the game was realizing the Shift key allows you to move faster.
Extremely boring.
I really liked the thought of needing to search around for clues and having that save your game, but it went to waste because it wasn't really used in the story. I did like the art and some of the music, but a lot of times there was just silence, not even white noise or footsteps. I wasn't even scared either, and I scare quite easily- the only time I ever jumped or got anxiety was those loud screaming noises because I was wearing headphones. One of the things that really pissed me off was when there was a choice- hide or keep climbing. Spoiler alert: the same thing happens regardless of your choice.
As for the plot, basically watered down Blair Witch, and the ending is rushed in my opinion.
Just don't buy this game, it's basically a walking simulator. I thought there might be puzzles or choices or somewhat interesting gameplay or a cool story but I was kinda disappointed. I'm glad it was only a dollar though.
Unfortunately, this is not a finished game - there is more story missing. The story has utterly long setup comparing to short confrontation and resolution. I expected more.
Ended up getting this game for .33 cents with a coupon and honestly, I couldn't ask for much more from a game like this. Although it played more like a movie (and the only part where you were really playing was in the Factory), it still kept me on the edge of my seat with an interesting story line. I didn't stop playing until I finished. Well done.
I completely fell in love with this, so pretty and creepy. I haven't seen the Blair witch project though so that might be why this is so special to me, since according to a lot of others this is a copy of that.
Absolutely insignificant! Simply, but other i can´t rate that.
After boring first ten minutes i think "Give them a chance" now after a hour i know that was wasting time. In this hour you only moved the figuer from a to b. It is like a bad movie with RPG graphic where you must push enter that he dialogue get continued.
German:
Absolut unbedeutend !
Nice short game with an interesting story, but ending happens suddenly so it feels a bit unfinished. Still enjoyed it.
If you're into spooky old school rpgs and don't mind the sudden ending then go on, not much can go wrong for 1.-
This had some good reviews and seemed pretty interesting - but man, was this ever disappointing.
PROS
- Systems for documenting/interviewing people/things to help(?) flesh out the world lore
CONS
- Any sort of progression system has no impact on the game or the ending (no point in documenting/interviewing 'cause you'll come to the same conclusion regardless.
- The ending was incredibly abrupt and really added no sense of completion or satisfaction to the game.
[*]The maps are generally clunky or make very little sense.

WOW!!!
Nice Game. Interesting. Liking the story so far.
May be put in steam achievements?! Just a friendly suggestion..
If I could describe Pembrey in one word, that word would be "Atmospheric".
The atmosphere that is presented to the player is truly well-manufactured.
Fantastically done.
In Short: A hidden gem in the rough. Buggy and short, but has a lot of heart and interesting story that keeps you playing.

I originally purchased and played Pembrey when it first came out, but mistakenly early. It was only partially done, and I hadn’t even gotten to the good part yet! I could tell there was a decent game there, and eagerly awaited when it would be released in full.
That day has come.
I streamed it, and now that I was able to experience the story in full, I can say I still enjoyed the heart of the game, and found it fun as well as intriguing. Enough to make me want more of the story and more games from this dev.
That isn’t to say this was perfect; in fact, it was a bit far from it. There were several bugs and typos during my playthrough, but the dev is one of those who is attentive and tries their best to fix any issues they notice. In fact, they credited me with helping find and point out several issues when I first played and streamed the game, and told me the second time I did the exact same thing.
There’s no combat; you can’t even really defend yourself as you run from the enemy. A few hits (in some areas it is a one hit kill) and you’re dead. The maps are also maze-like on purpose, with minimal lighting, but thankfully the killed moves slow enough to dodge and fake out.
Even though this is a shorter game (I honestly was able to ‘beat’ it in a little over 2 hours) it takes a bit long to get to the good stuff, then it feels slightly rushed. Whether or not this was the story as it was originally intended, or due to the fact it was accidentially released unfinished early, I can’t say. I will say that even though it felt rushed, I still enjoyed the story quite a bit. Intriguing characters and a decent mystery that kept me playing.
+Interesting horror story, with a mix of supernatural and regular (killer in the woods)
+Investigating items actually provided some good jump scares, in an unintentional way
+Uses the incredibly well done and good-looking POP! Horror City tile/character sets
+Has a New Game+ mode (in a way) but as of my writing this is was heavily bugged and I was unable to fully enjoy it.
=A bit predictable, but still was worth playing
=Multiple choices in the game, but didn’t feel like they affected the game at all. IE: you were given the choice of hiding in a building or running. I chose to run...which led me right into the killer, forcing me into the building anyway :P
=Relies a lot on subtle visual cues, and because I was streaming it both times I played, I actually missed a few things as I spoke with my chat which helped explain the story a bit
=There is a mechanic about interviews and documented items that you find/do each day...but you only end up doing two days worth of these, and it didn’t feel (thanks to the bug I mention below) like they mattered
=I felt the price was fair, but again, the game IS on the short side
=Some actions on screen were confusing. When one character is killed, it isn’t apparent that it happened from the dialog alone, and their sprite on the screen remained unchanged. More a limitation of the engine and the character set used.
-Even though it was officially ‘released’ there are still several bugs and issues with the game. It’s playable all the way to the end, but they are very noticeable. However, the dev is aware of many issues, and is currently fixing them as they are made aware
-Takes too long to ‘get started’ and then doesn’t stick around very long once it does.
-Things are ‘explained’ as you play, but it can be very subtle. Also, there is a bug the dev is working on with the engine and one of the scripts he used, causing him to disable the inventory. UNFORTUNATELY, a lot of information is tied to items and documents you find and read from there.
Even with its faults, there is a fun, solid story here, and I would gladly play more in this series or from this dev, without question. If you aren’t a fan of bugs and issues, even though they are being addressed, then I’d say give it a pass, or wait for a sale.
Kinda boring to be honest, it has potential with the story tho...
Wish I could interact with more things in the map, also I was sometimes bothered with some sounds.
Im not sure if I want to finish it when its done...
Ps: spotted one error while gameplay, I selected the items option in the menu and it showed me an error, like its not active in the script or something, maybe the developer can check that later cus I didnt save and the error forced me to close the game.
