I don't like to give negative reviews but I really think this game should be patched since connection to Master Server is now offline. The 2 best options for this case would be changing the Multiplayer to be a Peer to Peer connection or develop at least some simple bots for single player and removing the menus that try to connect to Master Server (My game was "locked" trying to connect to a Master Server and I needed to Alt-F4). None of the 2 options I mentioned are the best but is at least something better than just abandoning the community. I was starting to like this game when I purchased it and hope one day a developer may read this and solve this issue.
Product no longer works as you cannot contact the master server. Single player still requires to contact the server. Game needs a patch to remove this requirement. Until then it is unplayable.
I believe you can still play with couch co-op in single player, but there are better ways to program this for a shutdown.
Unplayable as couch-coop on two controlers. Inputs are mixed between them. Also menu is uncontrolable and unpredictable on controler.
I got this game exclusively for co-op. However co-op barely functions. Constant desync means over half the time you and your partner are on completely different maps. I'll be staring at a wall as they walk off into the abyss and they will witness me doing the same. The level is just so fundamentally broken at that point you can't continue. This happens constantly. Do not get only for co-op.
I'm recommending this game because on the base level, the game is playable and easy to pick up and play, however the game has been left in a bit of a broken state and is no longer supported by the dev team according to their discord , so any glitches, bugs or texture issues you may come across while playing the game may not be fixed or patched in the future.
That said, the game is a simple twin-stick shooter where you play as a Robotic soldier called a "Sentinel" tasked with clearing out the "Trident", a type of "ark" that holds human embryos and Humanity's last hope for survival amidst an alien invasion. you can play solo or with a group of 4 to fight through and take back control of 4 different sectors on the ship before moving on to the final "Strike Back" phase where you activate the Trident's defense turrets and fight off the alien attackers.
The game offers 6 different Sentinels you can control, each with their own stats, and abilities, 11 different weapons you can equip and 5 different deployable equipment packs you can take with you on your missions. the game also has "mission modifiers" that can increase your sector control amount whenever you complete a mission, increase your EXP gained, double the amount of "Matheria" you get from scavenging and doubles the amount of weapon parts you find after each mission, all at the cost of either increasing map size, removing the ability to respawn, enabling friendly fire or making enemies more difficult respectively.
the game is a bit "grindy" as you need EXP to unlock new Sentinels, Weapons and Equipment, and you need to fill up your "zone control" meter by completing successful missions in each zone so you can unlock additional weapons and equipment while getting one step closer to the end goal, and you need Matheria and Weapon Parts to upgrade your weapons. To keep the game interesting so that the player doesn't bore too quickly zones offer randomly generated levels so no play through of each sector is exactly the same. you still have to complete a total of 3-4 objectives per mission before exfiltrating on the end-stage elevator however, and the enemies you fight are all the same with no variation between zones. another feature that tries to keep the game interesting is the ability to upgrade or re-role your weapons through the "recalibration" menu where you can spend Matheria and Weapon parts to re-role damage, ammo capacity, rate of fire, accuracy and effective range or upgrade the weapon to a higher tier level so you can re-role even higher stats. it all offers a bit more risk and reward with your weapons and can help with taking on stronger enemies in the future.
Most weapons, equipment and Sentinel abilities are improved through gaining EXP and unlocking their additional perks and traits through standard EXP Progression. at the time of writing this i have put in over 20 hours of gameplay and have reached Rank 24 and i've still got a bit of a ways to go before i unlock every additional trait and ability for all my weapons, equipment and Sentinels.
Once you've gained control of all 4 sectors you then can move on to the final phase, the "strike back" phase. this is a single mission where you must run a gauntlet of never ending waves of enemies as you try to get the "Trident's" defense turrets back online. Once you complete this task and complete the mission you get the ending cutscene (which was bugged for me unfortunately and crashed the game) and then you start over from square one where you have to work your way back up the sector control grind before you can play the "Strike Back" mission again.
all in all, a simply fun shooter game, but sadly with the issue's i've experienced with it, while not game breaking kinda ruins the fun and i can see it turning a lot of people away, which is why i'm still recommending it, but with the warning that it might be a bit defective.
Well, it's OK.
Sort of boring and lack luster. Controls feel odd and the world seems interesting, but my PC loads this game too fast to see.
I'm leaving it in the middle, but paying 4 bucks for this was worth it. Anything more is a total rip off.
Do you like Alien Breed? How about Alien Swarm? Shadow Grounds?
Do you, like myself, when a developer remains totally loyal to the ethos of a gaming genre without tipping an arcade-esque playability in to a key-fluttering clunge-puddle like DOTA, etc? Still love the couch gaming co-op?
Then Trident's Wake is that quality itch-scratcher.
Best and easiest played with mates - randoms are less frequent, shall we say... :D
HellDivers is way better.
More content, better maps and objetive system. This one is just good if it's really on a sale to fool arround.
But in many ways it lacks content or innovation. The concept is good, but now how it's made
I used to play Alien Syndrome, and Alien Breed series and I like this well thought Indie gem, it has it's own twists and original ideas applied over that gameplay. Players can be unlocked and evolve with experience, abilities can be unlocked, weapons can be unlocked and improved to provide different tactics, difficulty provides a good challenge to apply good characters builds.
Argentinians developers created a good game with it's own identity on the gameplay.
Here is a video with the second sentinel: https://youtu.be/PNMaaN9Y2-8
The game is rough around the edges and I could let it slide since it looks like its got potential...
But, the big nope for me was that my controller would not work in certain part of the game:
- Tutorial wasn't working at all. Couldn't even press Start to quit
- Menu works if your mouse's cursor isn't on any selection object
- No menu option to enable/disable controller or mouse
- Some options aren't highlighted when you move around with the controller (difficulty/skulls/mutators things?)
When I buy a game that says "Full Controller Support" (and especially a Twin Stick Shooter), I expect to be able to not use my mouse to navigate around. I don't go ballistic if the game requires a bit of "mousework", but this is too unreliable to be worth the hassle.
Oh, and also, when I checked the servers, there was only one person playing so, that's not looking good either :(
As the game stands now, i cant honestly advise playign it and asked for a refund.
does it have potential? hell yes!
but the devs should take some classes on usabillity and game design first. the online lobby needs a lot of work, the controlls need work. the UI needs work. the entire flow of the game needs work. the graphics are fine as is. the "flow of the game" needs LOADS of work (as in when do you unlock what)
everything needs to be 300% more logically placed on the screen. check back on this game after about a year and a half of constant updates, it might be a "late bloomer" gem.
I purchased this game knowing it was in early access due to this line : ''Trident’s Wake is ready to play''
This is a lie. The game is barely functional as a game. The animations are not complete, lighting is not complete, server code is not complete, enemy ai is not complete. I barely managed to complete 1 level in a giggle fit over just how bad this was.
Play Alien Swarm instead, same game (and considering the age difference its amusingly better looking as well)
Wonderful cooperative action game, I have had many hours of fun frying aliens with friends, customizing my sentinels, unlocking special abilities and improving my weapons.
The game is in early access and I assumed that it could have many bugs, but after play it on a friend's PC, I saw that it is perfectly playable and I loved it. I bought it last week and I have played around 30 hours (be careful guys, it's really powerful).
The sounds of the shots are wonderfully well done and the lighting is well enough adapted to generate some suspense and mystery but allowing fluid combats.
When I detected a bug I contacted Bacus Studios through the Discord that offers the game in its main menu and they instantly answered my report and took action on the matter. I am a gamer who appreciates fast and fluent communication with the developers, and I have often been disappointed by the vague explanations of great well-known studios. I do not know if Bacus is so kind and helpful because the game is very new or because these people know what a gamer really appreciate. In any way, I hope that in the future they will continue to offer as good feedback as they are offering now.
Trident's wake is not Helldivers... but... if these guys... continue improving the game with the feedback from players as they have done so far... this game will be better.
If you want to have fun and try something different from the popular "Prosperity, liberty and democracy", this game is for you.
Bye and hope see you in serever to fry some aliens and big robots machineguns!
I refunded this buggy mess. I could barely get a game started because the menus didn't seem to be setup for a controller. Not good considering this is a twin stick shooter. Once, I got that figured out I found the gameplay to be rather uninspired and dull.
Cool game with interesting ideas, but bad execution so far. The game needs A LOT more content (more than 2 levels please, more interesting enemies,) to fix a lot of bugs (ps4 controller doesn't work well), and more people to play with.

TLDR: Do not buy, unless your intent is to try out something new in coop similar to Helldivers. Otherwise, play them or Alien swarm, Magicka, Running with rifles, Livelock.
This game is too EA, too grindy, too boring and badly balanced in solo.

This is my first refund. Bought this because of one of the negative reviews, that recommended to buy Helldivers (that I already have) instead and complained about game's difficulty in solo.
I played it for about an hour and must say that it is not that hard: the missions are very short (it took me half an hour to complete first mission solo after some tinkering with settings and two failed attempts, and then I had something like 4-5 successful runs and one failed), but the game itself is just not fun. It is not well paced - completion of first two available missions won't grant you access to other two, you can see on mission select screen. These two will either require reaching some higher rank or reaching mission score of 10000 points on one of two first available missions (which will also unlock one skill and one weapon), but I didn't want to stick for that long to find out, as one run results in something like 350 points (there's a modifier, that makes maps bigger, but you get 50% bonus to these points), which means - something like 30 runs to unlock rocket barrage or minigun-like weapon. Which brings us to another problem - the gameplay itself is not fun. Weapons' design seems to be influenced (ripped off) by Helldivers, but you only get two weapons in the begining (rifle and shotgun), so imagine you're playing helldivers, but without stratagems, with only two weapons, no sidearms, no grenades, in tight corridors and rather small rooms of a space station. Or if you will compare it with Alien Swarm (which is much older and also free) - similar gameplay but with greatly limited arsenal, no tactical depth (turrets, door welding, mines), poor sound effects.
for 10 bucks (was on sale) this game is def worth it. It's EA so it's not completed, but what's there is already pretty fun. Just wish it had better matchmaking as I haven't convinced any of my friends to pick this game up yet, though I've tried.
Love the game, it's simple and fast paced, excellent for a quick match with some friends. I hope the developers keeps up the good work seeing this is their first game and they have done a very good job, hope to see more of this company in the future.
Here are some of the things I enjoyed while playing this game:
-Good customization of Sentinels
-Variety of weapons as you lvl up
-Fast paced scenarios with clear objectives
-Fun to play with friends
-Friendly fire! :D
There were some "bad" things as well as some glitches and minor bugs like trespassing the wall (this was the most frecuent) or seeing your friend trespass a wall cause on his map there was a path and not on yours but i hope they fix it rather quickly as the game is on early access.
Aside from that it was a nice experience and i totally recomend it!
Definitely a fun twin stick shooter, but some day one glaring glitches keep us from fully enjoying the experience. Some refinement of the UI, bugsmashing, and party system will go a long way
Love the vibe of the game, this is what I needed for a friends get-together or a crash on the couch.
Would love to see more customizability (weaponry, skills, et cetera and such) for local-based gameplay with friends right out of the box without having to invest too much time into the game to unlock such features. I get it's the part of the game, but it's still rather time consuming.
Certainly quite a few bugs - this is expected for an early access, and there are definitely no complaints in that department, I am sure this will get taken care of in due time.
