Generation zero is a game I would not recommend buying unless it fits your interests and you are willing to deal with gameplay disrupting bugs that will break immersion and cause frustration due to the fact that these bugs SHOULD NOT exist by now.
Additionally, the gameplay has a LOT of issues since their last update for this game: the reworked how enemies drop certain resources which killed the resource economy and now the fun of using different ammo types that you would farm these resources for is gone. No sane person wants to spend 5 hours farming one singular enemy to get a fraction of its resources refined, and then only get a relatively small amount of ammunition to have fun with. This issue is made even worse for people playing Solo as one of the bosses will end up giving worse loot all because you couldn't kill it quick enough due to a lack of DPS. Is it possible to do? yes, but it requires very specific strategy to do and the payout is NOT worth the pain of trying to get that strategy to work out to begin with.
I will also state that this game is quite varying with its quality control due to the developers never polishing up older parts of the game so that they are experienced as well as the later places. road textures will be floating, doors or crate doors will clip through terrain, the map will lie about collectables or missions being somewhere, or having buildings not indicated on the map/indicated on the map when they don't exist. I genuinely believe that this game could be fixed if mods were easier to implement, but I doubt that will happen sadly.
as for the gameplay loop: the boss fights can be fun but sometimes they will bug out and just ruin the enjoyment. you could die to an attack, respawn in a safehouse 30 metres away and suddenly that boss no longer exists there but your tracking marker shows you are standing right next to them. On top of this, if you restart the game, die too many times, or just stop fighting an enemy or boss for a while, when you fight them later they may have all of their components working again, whilst simultaneously they no longer can be shot to do extra damage because they are visually destroyed. That is a problem when a big part of this game is about tearing the enemies apart so you can deal with them easier.
Lastly, the story. The story is decent but nothing overly special, with the voice acting being decent too. the in game conversations feel dry and inhumane sadly, with only 2 or 3 people feeling alive, including the robot you're killing (the irony).
I do genuinely love this game, but its flaws genuinely bring this game a lot due to the frustration they cause, ESPECIALLY when you realise that this game has been in development WITH community feedback for numerous years. Whoever was calling the shots when it came to Generation Zero's development needed to listen to the community more because this game is far from what it could have been.
Generation Zero is a great game full of missed opportunities and a decent community.
I have about 1000 hours playing this game, and I've purchased all the DLC with the exception of skins/outfits. Overall, it's been a big chunk of change. But after the devs announcing support for the game is over and they're moving on, I feel like I've been cheated. I can't even play the game now. After a brief hiatus due to a move, I've tried getting on over and over again and I can get as far as the cassette in the lower right corner of the black screen and waiting... waiting... waiting... at one point overnight and the game loads no further than that. I bought a couple of friends the game and all the DLC, same as I have. They can still play, I cannot. I verified the installation, its all good and.... nothing.
Its a great game. I enjoyed it much more than most. But like I said before, I feel cheated by Systemic Reaction and Avalanche Studios,
Do I recommend the game? Absolutely not. Don't waste your money.
considering its meant to be a survival-ish game, i feel like it more loot orienting. you basicly go from house to house location, kill bots every ranging from 2-5 bots, spent 10 mins time looting the area, move on to next area and repeat the steps.
feel like the story is barely there. friend and i spent 5 hours exploring first island and quickly agreed that the game needs a bit more meat on its bones to keep ones interest.
Game has several game breaking bugs that have existed from the beginning that the devs ignored complaints about and never fixed, and now they have declared mission complete leaving players with a buggy game and no modding support to even fix it. Oh, and of course they released a massive amount of nickle and dime DLCs that should have existed in the base game while still not fixing longstanding issues. Really too bad, the concept is amazing, but the execution is worse than lacking.
its really good but the downside is theres so many bugs rivels not spawning where there loction is machins under the ground machins in the air thats not a firebird
1. game 10/10
2 story 8/10
3 bugs (a lot) 0/10
dlcs 4/10 theres only around like 5 good dlcs and do not buy fnix rising unless u have a good pc and meet the specs
overall 8/10
nice, but no longer supporet by the devs
A very buggy experience, with little enjoyment
Wasnt good in 2022 and isnt good now either
A shame
FUN, so much to do, and a big open world with some-what realistic survival mechanics. There are a few glitches that aren't patched, but still a great game.
nearing 20 hours of game play here, gonna say that critics for this game kind of suck. they complain about movement animation, but the only real one that is weird is the runner animation. even then it doesn't take away from the experience of the game. single player is all I've done so far, leveling is difficult, games a bit more of a grind then most like(at least that's what they say, personally I have had no issue looting a backpack and then getting wood from a scrapping station), these aren't necessarily negative things because if you aren't getting enough resources just fight a Rival, or a house sized robots and it'll have a lot of what you need and scrap some fireworks for wood. so far I've enjoyed playing like I'm snake in his box going around with makeshift handyman skills and evolving into a being that can start shooting rockets from 30 feet away and not get detected due to my stealth upgrades, and so long as I one shot whatever I'm fighting their friends ain't gonna detect shit. 8/10 would fight house sized robots in 1989 again. Please fix the runner animation though, It makes the companion kinda weird feeling, and the teleport scares the shit out of me. This thing just teleport behind you and barks because it got more than 20 feet away from you. its sudden and unsettling. That is why its an 8/10.
I am not a FPS guy. I only play if there is some hook. The hook here is the unique game play with a quasi RPG element. And a robust weapons system. It is great fun. Totally recommend playing.
DLCs simulator the game.
In my opinion, this game is kinda meh. The reasons:
1. The "Story" is basically go here and go there with barely any NPC to interact with.
2. The environmental storytelling is lifeless and repetitive. Okay everyone here is dead or there was a combat.
3. Bullet sponge enemies.
4. Generic and weak weapons unless you bought the DLCs.
5. Overpriced DLCs.
There are probably more than that but I already forgotten most of them.
First Person Open World Shooter and you fight against robots
+ nice and beautiful landscape and graphics
= weapon modification is okay with different quality grades
= abundance of skills to improve gameplay
- boring storyline, only transfered via recordings or tapes there are no NPC (empty world)
- robots are bullet sponges
- too little robot variety, they only distinguish in coloring between normal and military grade which have even higher durability
- might be great in coop with other players.
I would not recommend to buy this game unless its on a deep sale. Boring, repetitive and empty world.
+ Nice atmosphere, stunning graphics (credible looking weather, except these sea - like waves on small ponds), variety of random generated enemies, open world with lots of opportunities for various ways of combat, excellent enemy animations (with few exceptions), top sound design, great feeling/looking guns, immersive storyline;
- immense amount of game breaking bugs. Idk how this could pass any quality control. Sometimes the game won't start at all, sometimes it will just hang after trying to respawn. The enemies can just disappear right before your eyes. Pistols seem op while gl does weirdly low damage, esp. to soviet made drones. Top tier guns cannot be augmented. NPCs are extremely poorly animated, like they've been thrown into the game in hurry. Very poor driving animations.
Overall an excellent looking/feeling game with A LOT of potential, that was wasted through underworking. I understand the support for this has been dropped, so the bugs will not be fixed, but mb you will be lucky enough not to run in any of them and the game will love your system. Then you are in for a dose of great fun.
They really released a final update saying "Hi! thank you guys so much! this is our final update, no more updates to this game, we're working on new stuff! baiii!" in the description, meanwhile they changed all the crafting requirements for first aid kits and adrenaline shots (VERY basic consumables) to need an UNHINGED amount of crafting materials, not to mention weapon augments. You guys just made crafting/upgrading anything take at least 5 hours, and you dont even touch broken things that your community has been yelling about for YEARS at this point. You killed your game for no good reason, Id suggest that nobody purchase a game from these people in the future.
Game is super fun, one of the few I 100%'d. Not super grindy. Combat is rewarding.
Abandonware
I like the game but it is full of issues, many of which were introduced in the so called "final" update as the devs have stated that they are not going to issue any additional fixes, period.
For instance, the daily assignment reward system was broken in that "final" update. The system is supposed to reward one point for easy, two points for medium and three points for completing hard daily assignments, respectively. At this time, all assignments, regardless of assigned difficulty level, reward only one point, making it impossible to score five star reward packages and extremely difficult to score even four star reward packages without completing every single daily assignment every single day. So why even bother?
That is an obvious example of the many things broken since the "final" update, and this particular issue would likely be very easy to fix. But there is a running list of issues. Some of which can be found here:

What kind of devs just abandon a game in this obviously utterly broken state? You're telling me that they cannot spare ANY dev time to fixing this otherwise good game they have been working on for so many years now? How pathetic is that? Are they proud of this ridiculous stance?
The devs/publishers should be forced to disclaim on the Gen Zero Steam store page that the game is broken and that they don't intend to fix it.
Don't say you weren't warned.
TLDR-The game was left in a broken state and the devs don't intend to issue any more fixes. It is abandonware.
Can someone tell me why (Generation Zero® - Rivals & Experimental Weapons) comes up as N/A, i'd like to have it as part of my DLC, yet it won't allow me to include it for some reason.
Aside from this issue as noted above, I am enjoying to over all play style and content the game has to offer, and look forward to many more hours of enjoyment in the future with this game.
This games fun but has a lot of bugs
This game ticks all the boxes for me, it is action packed, and the grind to get things isn't very long if you are truly enjoying the game and the environment isn't slopped together either. If you want an exciting, semi-grindey long-term survival/story game this would be in my top 5 for sure,
the only downside is that the game has been deemed "finished" by the publishers so don't expect any large additions to content in the future. DONT take that the wrong way there is still tons to do in this game and just because there isn't anything huge coming (to my knowledge) that shouldn't deter you from playing.
this game is truly amazing :)
Honestly kind of clunky. The game feels very samey and boring real fast. Like I played twice in the span of 2 years and both times I just got repeats of the same exact gear, facing the same five enemies, in copy and pasted structures in completely different parts of the map at different player levels.
I love what the game is going for, I can see the clear inspiration in Simon Stalenhag's work, but after like the first hour it gets extremely repetitive.
6/10
This game has certainly come a long way from its early development.
I will never get tired of dropping to the floor over a hill crest, taking out the .50 cal and harrassing Swedish and Sovjet robots while they're fighting each other in a flashy laser lightshow, or ducking from one tree to the next while spraying down enemies with an assault rifle.
Every once in a while I enjoy getting in and just shooting some robots while grazing off the map for story fragments and collectibles. There's not too much going on, but the world never really feels empty, due to the amount of enemies. Especially since once you leave the starting area, there's two factions that are fighting each other regularly.
The only feature that feels a little tedious is the base attack and defense. Enemy bases take a lot of time and ammo to take down if you're alone and you need to take them down again and again and wait for them to build up again, in order to farm enough outpost points to lock down the bases yourself. On the other hand it feels like this aspect of the game can be comfortably skipped, but I don't know if it has any effect on the main story.
Overall the game is easy eye candy that runs on any modern PC without trouble, and even though buildings tend to be a little repetitive, it doesn't make the game tedious because if anything, the buildings that you can enter become easier to navigate. There's a lot attention to detail, lots of environmental storytelling and lots of ammo to boot. The start of the game is slow and it remains so as long as you have low level guns because you really need to pick your fights, but once you learn to look out for loot spots, you'll actually find guns that enable you to fight larger enemies without sinking two thousand bullets into them before they die.
My longest fight in which I almost ran out of ammo was against a rival harvester that I accidentally leveled up to lvl 4.
The design of the map is nice, it really feels lived in and naturally grown and even though I've never been to Sweden, it feels like I'd expect it to be. The guns are a nice departure from the usual America vs Russia recipe and they fit what you'd expect to see in this sort of setting.
If you're looking for a game where you can kill robots and explore the remains of a former population, this is the game for you. Just don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.
It's a good game, give it a chance or wait for a sale if you're so inclined.
Fun Single Player first person shooter. Good story line to keep you involved. Also there is within the multiplayer options to invite friends to help play the story line. Very open world. Lots to explore. LOTS LOTS of nick-nack collectibles to be found for those who are achievement hunters. Even after the story has been completed, there is still plenty to grind out in the way of upgrades, achievements, missions, and just plain maxing out your character.
The game is pretty good, I like the feel and the robots scare the piss out of me sometimes. I kinda understand the whole gripe of having no NPCs around the map. But, I feel like that wouldn't fit very well if you had military or other groups running around fighting robots, it would take a lot of the atmosphere away. I wish the game had gotten more love so the devs would be able to have the resources to update the game with more big ass robots. I recommend it. Hopefully, they'll release something in the future where modders can make their mods more accessible/better or the devs will make a sequel.
Most mechanics are not unique and present in other games, but Systemic Reaction nailed the atmosphere so that even in co-op this game feels immersive and fun. And 5 stars for adding co-op by the way. Difficulty scales along the map, so it is never "too easy" or "too hard" unless you choose it to be (if you don't count the first island). For me, this game did not keep me playing for long, but left a good impression. Just keep in mind that it is somewhere in the middle between "story-based action-adventure" and "grinding for survival and progression". Also great faction warfare system, that, albeit simple, does allow for fun gameplay even in locations far beyond player power level. Also I really like the effort they put into graphics and lighting.
This game is awesome, but I would like to see more story expansions. Plus more inventory capacity for carrying more ammo and weapons.
I really liked this games with intense game play and amazing graphics. However i feel that the game needs more work due to broken robot spawning, no collisions on certain structures and bunkers losing texture which causes reflective surfaces to appear which makes the flashlight useless.
TL;DR – The game is fun, but the devs are super greedy and it hurts the game. Read on if you want some explanations.
It’s a fun game with amazing sound design. However, I really don’t like the fact that so much content is locked behind DLC. It constantly feels like you’re missing something while playing, especially in the base-building part. And of course, all the DLCs that actually give you good guns cost more money (6 euros vs 1.5 euros for a "bad" DLC). Even if one player owns the DLC that gives access to a new part of the map, and you're playing in their world, the other player can’t go to that island. We tried, and there’s no way — the devs made sure that everyone has to pay if they want even a little bit of fun. That DLC is 8 euros, while the base game costs 25.
I don’t mind a bit of grinding, but the game is full of design choices that make me ask: “Do the developers even play their own game?” For example, a lot of “special” ammo is so expensive that it’s not even worth crafting. Some of the materials — uranium in particular — are just ridiculously expancive. You get 5 uranium per level, and after level 30 it becomes a pain to level up. You get a few scraps from rivals and base assaults, and you need 100 just to start refining it. On the highest difficulty (and medium settings, because the hardest mode is just dumb — your furnace can get one-shotted and you basically lose everything, it is not fun at all), you get less than 20 uranium back. For reference, a serious upgrade needs around 15, for every gun. How are you supposed to get another 100? I don’t know, I guess you're expected to farm rivals for another 20+ hours. Sounds like fun, right?
There are more examples — like the fact that adrenaline (used for revives) is insanely expensive to craft. If you’re not a pro at the game, you’ll die three times before you even farm enough materials to make one. And this is just the tip of the iceberg — there are dozens more examples of bad game design.
The game has some bugs, mostly minor, except for the fact that multiplayer is not synced properly. I don’t even know how to explain it — let’s just say that my friend and I often don’t see the same things, and sometimes we’re not even in the same place on each other’s screens (I’ll be crafting at a table, but he sees me standing 5 meters away from it). My guess is that they had to design the system this way to prevent players without DLC from glitching into areas they shouldn’t have access to.
In short, a message to all the game devs: GRINDING IS NOT CONTENT
Padding your game with repetitive chores doesn't make it deeper it just makes it exhausting.
It’s a shame. I really, really want to like this game — the concept, the atmosphere, the gunplay, the sound — it’s all amazing. But the more I play, the more I dislike it, because I see what they’ve done with it. They turned it into a cash cow, and once the hype died down and they didn’t want to invest anything back into it, they just said “screw it” and stopped developing. There’s a reason there are still 4–5 islands left with no content.
gunplay is awful, game feels clunky, overall its not enjoyable to play
beautiful game with epic pve fight in my opinion the open world exploration is pretty cool with the modern apocalyptic setting would highly recommend for players looking for a fun multiplayer open world shooter
Game keeps crashing cant play it. This game has so much potential but it keeps fucking crashing. This game is a load of sheit
I'd 100% get it. It's beautiful and pretty fun to open car doors and collect some med-kits, and as a bonus I haven't had any game-breaking bugs (or pretty much any bugs) the only bug I've experienced is the bike physics goofing out.
Game is buggier than ever with the new update, guns feel weak and inaccurate and the last update told players to get fucked and told modders to also get fucked.
Well. I have completed Generation Zero. It ticks a special box for urban survival and scavenging that I enjoyed, but it is awash in problems, so unless you bear my special kind of autism, I cannot at all recommend this game. The concept carried it for me, but good lord it was worth more than a few snarled curses at the gameplay
>Low-feedback bullet sponge enemies with terrible animations, too much mobility, and incredible accuracy at extremely long distances
>Unsatisfying gunplay with weapons that feel incredibly unimpactful until you hit the very highest tiers of quality.
>Miserably broken crafting system that forces you to play a multiplayer-tuned base defense mode and yields rewards balanced for just the one player.
>A miserly skill and gear system which has such small bonuses to be almost completely ineffectual in gameplay and explains almost nothing to the player
>A multiplayer system that requires you to use up wildly expensive self-rez items in order to pick up teammates
>Unremarkable missions that often end with your character walking in a room, getting 'quest complete' and no further explanation or depth.
All in all, can't recommend for more than single-digit price purchase. I really REALLY wanted to like this one, but I can recognize my own copium too.
I used to love this game, I completed it on PS4 some months after release, and thoroughly enjoyed it despite its buggy state back then. After revisiting it on PC now that development is complete, I yearn for those early months where you would have environmental story telling nudge you around the map. Where you'd explore, recon, plan, execute and improvise. The player was empowered by progressing and being smart or balls-y about it.
Now, it's been refactored and polished up. There's hand holding by condescending NPCs, there's nudging for a plethora of collectables which may eventually lead to so small of an advantage that it is not likely you'll notice it. The daunting but inviting map got half reworked into a frustrating mess and took away some of the best spots to farm enemies and turned it into a mud pit. More loot was added to accommodate base building, which I personally don't care for, where carry capacity was already a huge challenge.
Every choice made since release was another step away of what I loved the first months when I played this. A beautiful, atmospheric world to conquer. A feeling of dread every time you push the boundary of what is unknown. Countless memories of plans well executed, or plans gone sideways and challenges overcome. You could feel this game was a labor of love on release, now it's a labor of committee, one trying to bolt things on to try and appeal to base builders and defenders which I doubt will be convinced by it.
In the end, aside from fixing progress blocking bugs and some handy signs in the bunker to give some sense of direction in them, every other choice made since release chipped away at the rough gem Generation Zero was on release and turned it into a frustrating, player hostile turd that I cannot in good conscience recommend. Maybe with a huge discount, but even then I'd still harp on how much better it could have been.
There are mods that may remedy some frustrations, expand storage capacity, spawn experimental weapons etc. But much as chasing the next safe house, the next 5 crown loot, the full vision module in this game... I'm just chasing for that experience in the first year of Generation Zero. And not being talked down to by an NPCs I don't care about.
Good graphics, nice bicycle riding and cool robot concept but a bit repetitive, bad inventory management and nothing that grips you to the story, you get bored easily ... It's fun only for a bit.
Fun game. I've been playing solo, but it would be even more fun if my buddy was playing as well.
crashes every hour, 9/10 times it even fails to send the crash report
I had to come here because you shut down all the comments on your s h i t dino game that you got people to buy and never released. I'll never buy another game from you again. Ain't my fault you mismanaged a game, got caught up in feature creep and failed to ultimately deliver a 1.0. Tossers.
Want a skyrim game that isn't? Here ya go. There's a story that's there, a large world, a somewhat decent skill tree, and lots of fun when not trying to tickle a tank with a pistol. The world has lots of things to find or places to explore and the gameplay is exciting imo. Won't say it's perfect, but I've almost got 100 hours in it and don't plan on stopping yet.
There is a larger amount of good here. But also a lot of meh...
Without mod support its a thumb down. Still going to play, and try to enjoy.
Loot boring, locations boring, story meh, no hunger thirst. I recommend turning off some of the QOL to even enjoy. I find myself forced to do the 5 min rule. Play for 5 min no matter what hopefully play longer. varying success.
I made it a full hour tonight. 3.4 hours i feel like i played it for 23 hours already =/
Maybe i just dont get it but i tried, cool mechanics but honestly that beginning section is really boring.
Great game if you have a good computer, sadly my donut laptop that occasionally bluescreens can't run it that well so Ive only played a little bit of it. Its a fun experience with friends
DO NOT BUY THIS DLC
Now to tell you why. So I bought this last week and enjoy the content however the content is mostly useless due to a bug. On certain terrian or areas of the map when you deploy the companion it just disappears. Gone until you go back to the bench and mess with the CONFIGURE option.
Well in their closing message they mention any bug reports can be made and supplied a link. Well I went there I told them of this bug. I was told by Adam that many players have been reporting this since the last hotfix. I was also told that I am out of luck as they have no intentions of fixing this bug. I was told to learn to deal with the bug.
I wish I was making this up too but sadly I am not. I am using 0 mods for the game not even looked for any. I am running a
i7 11th Gen
3070 GPU
48GB RAM
Loaded on an SSD fresh install fresh save.
There is zero reason on my end why this does not work. This is just developers pulling out now that the cash has dried up. So spread the word to everyone that we do not buy from this company anymore. Let them feel our distrust and aggervation over this clear money grab move they have made.
This game is a underrated masterpiece! This game is just amazing, the concept, the story, and the gameplay! Although this game at first may not seem like much, as you get deeper into the game, it gets so fun you can’t stop playing, but the animations of the NPCs I don’t like, their just qwerky and in weird, generally the game is a gem!
Fun game lots of story and stuff to do, some of the dlc are worth it but none are necesery for the main story :) big robot go boom boom bang bang
Fallout + Terminator in Sweden
Pros:
+ Smooth performance for an open-world crafting survival game
+ visually beautiful apocalyptic world
+ lots of customization options
+ building bases is easy and not very grindy since you have resources everywhere
Cons:
- very tough to run away from combat, robots won't stop until you shoot them all down or reach a safe house
- loot is very same-y everywhere. rare to find something new
Note: if you have Windows anti-ransomware feature enabled, the game won't be able to save your game. make sure to add the game to the allow list.
Its got its flaws, but its got a flavor i dig and that scratches and itch i did not know was there
its such a great game, in the beginning is hard but later its so much fun i`d rate it a 10/10. Such a great game
very nice game the game playing it is better than the trailor
I like this game, unique robotic enemies, the combat, interesting story, and I love the atmosphere and aesthetic of the game.
But I feel like the story and mission design would need re-tweeking, they are very; go here + shoot things or press a button = end. Though the devs have ceased development of this game, it still feels unfinished. There's unused parts of the map and the prestige points still do nothing.
But, I still had a blast playing it and this game has beautiful graphics, though the lighting could need an upgrade in certain firefights.
