It was fun when it wasn't frustrating.
Good parts are, the whole atmosphere is well done, visuals, music, ambients set the mood nicely. But that's where good ends.
The story makes no sense, neither during the play, nor when you finish it. It has three parts which mix worse than water and oil slapped together.
Puzzles are more annoying than fun. There are four kinds of them.
1) Flip the rectangular board of different size from one state to another by clicking every cell which flips all adjacent ones. It's annoying because it's used repeatedly (10 times or so), most of them are HUGE (we're talking even 10x10 huge), and they flip SLOWLY.
2) Puzzles which rely on seemingly intentionally vague audio/visual clues (repeat a sequence of 10 notes of almost identical pitch which you could only figure out with a perfect ear or a spectrum analyzer on an audio capture, or a looped sequence of lines where you are not shown where the start is).
3) Puzzles which look so out of place you are just flabbergasted.
4) A handful of puzzles which fit the setting, but are still rather funky.
And on top of that, you have to walk, walk, walk, walk, walk, between two furthest points on the map, then retrace your steps back all the way, and then... Go to the furthest point and back once more. And that's just in one of the quests. (Yes, you literally have to go to point A, then are told you need to go to the point B which is the furthest from it to do stuff, then return to A to report, only to learn you need to go to B again to be given a key to do more stuff at B and return to A to report once more.) All the others are little better.
Oh boy.. where to start with this one..
Lake Ridden is a puzzle game in a walking sim. As for story, it's very basic and nothing is really explained. Seems more of a mixup of two completely irrelevant story lines.
Graphics are dull. The first few area's are ok, but most of the game takes place in a very thick fog. Therefore, it's hard to see where you are going. On top of that, mouse movement is extremely erratic, making you do unexpected quick turns. This makes navigating even more confusing.
Puzzles are a mixed bag as well. Some are pretty good, while most are copy-paste with little variation. Sadly enough, the in-story hints also contained red herrings. This turned some of the more logical puzzles into pure guesswork, at least for me.
The best puzzle in the game was the graphics setup in the main menu. What the hell is going on over there? It just refused to remeber the frequency. And I had to enable 'resolution downscaling' to get rid of enormous fps drops.. on an RTX 3090.. for a six year old game with dated graphics... like what??
I was hoping the story would get more interesting and at least drag me along, but even that didn't happen.
For puzzle die-hards, there are certainly a few good ones inside. For me, it was borderline positive. But since there's plenty more better games out there, I have to give it a thumbs down.
This is a Dear Esther and Myst type first-person walking simulator and exploration game with some repetitive trial-and-error and memory-based puzzle boxes, slider locked door mini games, and some other old-school obtuse puzzles. Unfortunately, controls are really clunky and navigation is problematic, and it seems like there is an optimization issue because the game runs on my laptop at low FPS, which gave me nausea. Just like Dear Esther, this game has a vague and all-over-the-place story with a disjointed narrative, and all I understand is that you are a woman searching for your lost sister, and after a while you realized your sister is not the only lost one, and there are some other people who disappeared as well. The game's environments are quite empty, and you're simply walking through them. At one point, I went into an empty house and opened too many doors, empty drawers and empty cupboards for no reason. It's not like that I give a negative review because it's a really bad game, but it's an actually mediocre indie one, and it's just not simply my cup of tea. positive side graphics, voiceovers, background musics and atmosphere are decent, but I think I should stick more to point-and-click puzzle games.

I've been trying to play through this game for years. Every time I pick it up, I get bored or frustrated and put it down again for a few months. It's now been 3 years since I last played, so I've given up and am writing this review.
From what I can remember, the environments are beautiful. The puzzles are not as terrible as everyone is making them out to be, but there was a lot of backtracking and wandering to figure out where to go next. I also remember the story being extremely confusing - I don't think I ever really understood what's going on in this game.
Overall, it's an okay walking simulator. I would give it a neutral if possible, but since I can't, I feel like it needs to be a negative since I couldn't bring myself to finish it.
It's good looking and has some fun puzzles, the story is unfortunately quite poor in its structure and execution, but if you like atmospheric environments it's good for that
One of the first games I played when I got a PC
