Saloon Showdown VR is an arcade shooter that has been in early access for almost 5 years now.
Check out my gunslinging action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LbzDyGhyMI
In the game you will have to cover a route with points where you have to defend yourself from cowboys who attack you from all directions,
at these points you will also be able to hide behind objects or buildings.
the game is quite simple, shoot everyone and survive till the end because when you die you start all over again.
For this price it's still entertaining, and a pleasant shooting game for VR newcomers, although there are better ones out there anyway.
Wow what a lot of fun! My god for just a few bucks! A perfect action / shooter game for introducing your friends to VR! And it uses the medium so well!
You think: OK, I got this. No problem - just point and shoot. Pick off the bad guys one by one. But no way! You are going to have to duck and dodge, huddle behind cover, keep your eyes peeled and fearfully twist and turn at every opportunity. You will have to choose carefully when to reload. You will have to have the courage to step out of cover and re-enter the fight! Try not to crack under pressure - not until the blue teleport symbol appears, letting you know you can finally relax as you have killed the last baddy in this position!
A wonderful feature of this game is that enemy appearances are randomised. There is simply no way to get familiar and relax.
There are lots of little touches in this game that are done so well - the rag doll animations, the placement of enemies, how cover works, the little sound cues that add to gameplay in classic ways. Some enemies are stationary, some moving, some will charge you! Your lives are counting down, the pressure is mounting, there is no respawn . . . only a glorious death in the West!
+Cheap
+Okay
+Different Wave shooter style
-Very unfinished
-Needs a lot of polish
-Gun feels weak
-I wish the 2nd gun was a left handed gun/mirrored instead of copied so that reloading didn't feel so awkward.
3/5
So far good attempt, and the Dev has said in december he was still working on it (I think he is?) Overall, it's a wave shooter, kind of a lazy one at that with how some of the motion is, and how the guns work. I would get it for it's current price ($.50) Not much more at the moment though.

Better than the price would suggest, seriously worth it. Ought to hold me till rdr2 vr :)
Unplayable: can't reload on the Index controllers : /
Only one level, and only one type of gun...
But with 4 ways to wield that gun and 3 difficulty levels, that really transform the way you play, that's 12 ways to finish that level.
Just finishing that level with the different gun options on easy difficulty will give you more then your money's worth, and if they added a second level they'd have to double the price to make it fair.
If my purchase was cancelled, I'd have to buy it right back. Totally recommended.
Some of the most fun I've had for $5.
Just a simply-made arcade shooter with very satisfying guns and plenty of bandits to use them on.
I would love it if the developer added a new area or new guns, but even as it is it is well worth the price.
Just say when.
The aiming is something you can actually master in this game. If only the controller would have a proper pistol grip..... This game is fun for less then 1$. It`s something that is pritty much in development, but I enjoyed playing it, and I could see this as a widely popular title with time and a lot of added content and weapon.
What I write for this review is the experience I had with the game, everybody will experience things differently. This is my honest review if you don't like it well tough. Also no game is safe from a review whether its early access or full release. Now onto the review.
Saloon Showdown VR is a game where you are trying to restore law into a lawless town. All you have is your trusty 6 shooter. The game came out October 10 2017, so 10 months it's been out on STEAM. Developed & Published by Matthew Peacock using Unreal. The game is more or less an on rail shooter. You clear a section, move forward, clear a section ect ect you get the point. You have unlimited ammo but only 4 heart health. If you reach zero you restart the whole thing over. However I was able to lose no health until the end when the "final" boss area. I got killed in one hit by the boss'es "hidden" riflemen & died instantly regardless of having all heart health.
The graphics are okay, nothing outstanding or anything.
The gun sounds were average at best.
The Music does seem to fit the western theme.
ADSing (Aiming Down Sights) was accurate with how a revolver should be aimed.
There were 2 types of reloading. 1. Where you hold a button & flick the controller to the left side for the revolver to spit out the used bullets, new bullets get added automatically & just flick the gun to the right to close the chamber. 2nd way is push the reload button & Everything is automatic reload. This should have had more realistic reload mechanic for realism.
There is only one stage (one level) of the game.
There is Easy, Medium & Had mode.
So is Saloon Showdown VR worth your time. I would say right now yes since it's on sale for 99 cents until July 23rd then it's going back to its $4.99 asking price. I found only 2 updates to the game. 1st was Oct 12th 2017 for changing the gun position & the 2nd was Oct 25th 2017 was adding twin pistols + easy reload (auto reload). That's it nothing else for updates. No idea if the Matthew Peacock abandon the game or something. From what I can find Matthew Peacock has no other game developed, only Saloon Showdown VR.
So with how the game is now, it gets 3/10 making it a poor game. What hurts it is that it's been out for 10 months & it has nothing new since October 25th 2017.
That's the Pony review for Saloon Showdown VR
This game is not bad. Pretty satisfying with decent death animations. I need to put more time into it but as far as VR experiences go it's not bad.
I felt like Billy the Kyd in Young Guns. Would be nice to have a single-action option to have to pull the hammer back by sliding your thumb down the vivemote's thumbpad. It's short but worth the price and I will replay it often. I hope development continues on it.
Not sure how many updates since those negative reviews, but this is one of the most realistic western shooters out there... and I've played many a video game!
O.k, barring bullet penetrattion of rotting wood, and the like (just pretend the coach is armored with iron) , it really makes your senses alive, scanning for the next 'bad dude' gunning for you, while avoiding civilians (human and horse civilians. Animals are people too :) ). There is no player controlled motion movement (only predetermined locations, and horse driven coach), but you can move around, taking cover around corners or objects, or set it to easy, and just sit and relax on a chair. The difficulty levels are as they state, Easy is very easy. Medium is a bit of a challenge, and Hard is... Difficult! Oh, yeah, as the other reviews have stated, reloading is probably one of the best in VR... for a six shooter. Enjoy! :)
This game is a joke. Beat it in about 15 min. Its you in a western town killing enemies, and thats it. There is no story, no progression, score system, there is no game. Not worth my $1.19 i got it on sale for. Only reason im not refunding it is because it was a fdollar and its not worth refunding on my credit card. If this is what constitutes as a Valid VR game then I need to download Unity and start making games. Waste of time, not sure why this has any good reviews.
I played this on the Oculus Rift with Touch controllers. It works, but you do have to do a Windows 7 compatability fix. And to reload you have to press Y or B and then flick the gun to the appropriate side.
This game is so much fun. Absolutely one of the best wave cover shooters out there. The graphics are not the best, but the gameplay is fast, strategic, and exciting. You basically have to figure out where the bad guys are coming out off while trying to get the best cover shooting area. Sometimes you are just playing hide and seek, peeking out of one area then waiting for them to shoot while you peek out of another area to get the kill shot. Bad guys come from all different directions and with different strategies, guns, and even on horseback. Avoid killing civilians if you want to be the good guy I suppose.
You teleport by shooting the target avatar. Each area of the level is well-done. I can't believe this game is on sale for $1.19. This game is easily worth the full retail price of $11.99.
Sale Price Rating 9/10. One of the best deals in the Winter Steam sale 2017.
What a game! Takes me back to the old days playing time crisis at the arcade. I especially love having to turn around and shoot around corners etc., makes the game very immersive.
Pros
Immersive and satisfying when you one shot 3 or 4 bad guys in a row
Cool boss stage
Cool bar scene – I would actually like to have a drink there after the shooting’s done
Addictive!
Cons
Too short (hopefully the next level comes out soon)
Voice acting a little inconsistent
This game is what VR is for. Looking forward to the final release.
I have been waiting for a shooting game that I would look forward to play daily and I found it. The gun mechanics work great including reloading once you get the hang of it. Battling while being pulled by a horse while standing on a wagon is a lot of fun. For improvements here are some suggestions,
- Provide Save Points or more lives. It is a little frustrating getting close to the end of a stage, dying and having to start again. Maybe provide the choice that if you die you can continue or start at the beginning
- How about dual pistols
- Provide more items to shoot as you wait to start your game
Saloon Showdown has potential, but it's plagued by the same problems that all early access games have.
I'm marking this as not recommended for now. The game currently has a single level that plays like a demo. It's a fun demo, but I wouldn't consider anything in the game (besides the basic mechanics) to be worthy of release.
I do have fun playing it, but it's going to take a lot of polish on all areas (graphics, audio & gameplay) for me to change this to a recommend.
Very very cool game, Feeling is right there in the perfect corny spagethi western style where you shoot from your hips and duck behind barrels, I feel like a kid playing High noon again with C64! So much fun!
Only down side is that is it really so short? i get to end of town, meet the bad dood, kill the bad dood in duel and two henchment and thats it? it goes no further from there? Nothing to do but eventually to shoot your self and start over?
This game is awesome.
Played for several hours today, even called mates up and told them to get over here and have a crack. Everyone loved it and once we all worked out the reload technique we couldn't image doing it any other way now!
Game get's harder as you progress through the town, a few of us made it up to the saloon a couple of times but the pressure of reloading, ducking behind crates and barrels etc builds up and makes it kinda scary!
It seems to run a lot smoother than any other VR game I've tried too; no FPS issues at all on my i5-6600K with a GTX970 and 8G-RAM. Got a little warm after a couple of hours, but not any worse than 30 mins on PUBG...
All in all, this is my new "go to" game when mates come over and want to experience VR for the first time, or just for me when I feel like popping some caps in a few cowboys ;)
UPDATED: Ever since the Vive came out I have been hoping for a simple straight up six shooter experience with a revolver that looks and feels good in my hand. This is the case with Saloon Showdown. The gameplay is simple, shoot waves of foes from designated postions then shoot to the next spot and continue the battle. At the end of the stage, face off against the main bad guy in a classic duel.
Pros:
Graphics are crisp and very AAA.
Gun looks great in my hand and sounds are realistic.
Re-loading your revolver is smart and nice (once you figure it out)
Varied enemy types and positions
Good immersive feel.
Riding on the wagon (while slow) and shooting and getting shot at is fun.
Hiding behind corners and shootouts are fun. I feel like a real pistolero!
Devs are very responsive to feedback and constantly looking to improve.
Gun angle in controler feels natural.
Cons/Suggestions:
The lack of checkpoints can be a little frustrating. Having to redo everything from the beginning every time you die.
Really want to dual weild six shooters!
Could eventually have different characters to play: Native American (bow and arrow), Rifleman, Quick shooter (dual weild).
If this game evolved to eventually include a story line and locomotion it has the potential to become one of the best games ever. Imagine something along the lines of the Call of Juarez games.
I recommend supporting this title.
